    Hey all,

I have a little DT humor here for you all. Actually, it's not my own.
It's adapted from a joke which appeared in the last GFTPM. :-) So here we go
    :-)

A guitarist dies and goes to heaven. There he is greeted at the pearly
gates by St. Peter, who says, "Oh you're going to love it here. We have
Marshal stcks in all the practice rooms, every guitar you can imagine, and we
have jam sessions every night until 4am. Everybody's here: Jimi, Stevie Ray,
Duane... You'll love it!!!" The guitarist replies, "That sounds great. But
    tell me, is Petrucci here?"
St. Peter hesitates, and reluctently answers, "No, I'm afraid Petrucci
didn't make it up here. But you must be tired, so check into your practice
room and I'll see you later."
So the guitarist finds his way to the practice room and begins
unpacking. From the next room he hears the familar neoclassical/progressive
strains of a heavy metal shedder. As he listens more closely, he realizes
that it sounds exactly like Petrucci. He walks back to St. Peter at the gate
and says, "I thought you said Petrucci wasn't here?" St. Peter replies,
    "That's correct, he isn't."
The guitarist shrugs and returns to his room. Again he hears the clean
picked harmonic minor scales and the tight-voiced 3rds whizzing by at a 32nd
note clip. He even hears the melody line to "Bombay Vindaloo." Bewildered, he
goes back yet again to St. Peter. "Look, I know I heard Petrucci in the next
room," he insists. "If that's not Petrucci in the next room, then who is it?"
St. Peter glances around, making sure no one else is listening, then
pulls the guitarist close and says under his breath, "The guy in the next
room? That's God. He thinks he's John Petrucci."

I got a kick out of it... hope you do to :-)

                                                    Later all,
                                                           Brian

Read the liner notes for WD&DU. You've been visited by the dustpan

Couldn't agree with Mark Scudder more than this. (Hope I spelled his
name right. If not: Sorry !!)
People have been butchering the original WDADU for along time, putting
the blame (mostly) on Dominici. What the f... is wrong with his
vocals ?? Compared to LaBrie I personally prefer Dominici, mainly
because of LaBrie's girlie "screaming just to scream" voice. Another
thing that has annoyed me for a long time is LaBrie's breathing into
the mike. (Not Portnoy !!) The vocals on songs like surrounded and
others on I&W have this panting on it, sounding like the words don't
come out of his mouth, just the air. The weakest point of DT is
LaBrie. And the guy posting something about looking like Fabio is
absolutely right. He was, is , and always will be a poser.

Well, enough said about LaBrie. The production of WDADU is not at all
as great as on I&W and on Awake, but it's not bad. Like Mr. Scudder
said, it is likely that this helps to put WDADU into the light it has.
The bass sound Myung has on that album is the best he has put to tape.

So, listen to it again. (And again, and again, and again etc.....)
and let Awake have a little rest. WDADU deserve more credits than it
has recieved from this list. My views could have something to do with
that this was the first DT album I heard. Not so strange though,
because in 1990 there wasn't much else avaliable from them. At least
not in Europe.(No demos or such....)
Hopefully more than two persons on this list have this album as their
    fave DT album !

This is my opinion, if you don't like it...............
        ...........bollocks !

    Hello all,
I just bought my tickets for the Houston Show (11/18) on Satuday
night (I had to wait until I saved the money). Apparantly, the ticket sales
are not very good. I bought ticket #'s 111-113; I think the place they're
playing has a capacity of 600.
They might sell better if they would ADVERTISE the concert. They are
up against Danzig/Type-O Negative who are playing the same night. All I hear
on the radio are Danzig ads. I haven't heard or seen a single ad for the
    Dream Theater concert.

Oops. Sorry to spam you guys with my request (I keep forgetting
that this list replies back to the list and not the author).

Anyways...if you get a chance, check out my DT Home Page,
"When Dream And Web Unite". It can be found at
    http://nextsrv.cas.muohio.edu/~mgjones/music/dt/dt.html (or from the
DT card on the Ultimate Band List). I finally got some album covers
in the discographies. Use NetScape if possible...Mosaic does some
    wierd things sometimes....:(

I agree with what a few people have post I really like WDADU. Besides
it's obivous short comings in production I see no problems. Dominici
is pretty decent on the recording I think. And it is a good change
from James once in awhile. I believe that Charlie had a difficult
            time singing live.

Hey I still would like a compilation of James doing the WDADU
            material.

Hardly. Maybe in the past, but now he is quite impressive, especially
his stage presence. I don't know about the I&W tour, but in B-more on
this tour, he OWNED the stage, except during solos and instrumental
sections of course. He has a very commanding stage presence. The
"weakest point of DT" ???? I really don't think they have a weak point.
And the breathing into the mic in Surrounded et al is a great way of
making the vocals softer and more tender. Given, it is slightly overdone
at times, but it creates a nice mood, and makes a strong contrast to the
    rest of the song.

REVIEW OF FATES WARNING/DREAM THEATER 11/12/94 OKLAHOMA CITY

    *********************Excessive spoilage*********************

i didn't have time to write this yesterday, and i am leaving for the
san antonio show soon, so i have to make this brief. fates came on
right at 9:30 as promised, played a 45 minute set that blew the crowd
away, consisting of stuff from the last three albums (maybe just the
    last two)

    here is the set list:

    FATES WARNING:

    Instrumental intro
    Life in Still Water
    Outside Looking In
    Pale Fire
    The Eleventh Hour
    Point of View
    Face the Fear
    Eye to Eye
    Monument

    DREAM THEATER:

    Pull Me Under
    6:00
Take the Time (instrumental interlude/JP solo)
Caught in a Web (MP solo)
    Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
    Jam 1
    Jam 2 (Derek/JP)
    Mirror (with new intro)
    Lie
    Another Day
    A Mind Beside Itself
            Erotomania
            Voices
            Silent Man
    Encore:
    Metropolis
    (Eve)

    Notes:

Jam 1 is entire band, sounds like bombay vindaloo, but different, with a
little of rush's "xanadu" thrown in. (not quoted, but the feel of the
atmospheric intro, with volume swells from JP and chimes by MP). Jam 2
is just Derek and JP, sort of a JP solo accompanied by DS. The new
intro to the mirror kicks major ass, and is heavy on keys. (real metallic
keyboard sound, it is awesome...) the sound man they have for this tour
must really suck, because the sound was incredibly compressed, (no dynamics
whatsoever) for those of you with recorders, this means average and peak
are the same, no deviation. there was a noticable resonance in the low
bass freqs, which distorted the bass drum beyond belief. also, the keys
were almost nonexistent in the mix. sure could here the bass, though, that
    was a major plus.

also, this night was the very best i have ever heard james sound, and i saw
them like six times on the I&W tour...

fates warning really impressed the crowd, it seemed even in oklahoma city
(i didn't realize there were such shitty towns) there were quite a few
    fates warning fans...

we met the band before and after the show, of course. mike portnoy did not
ride in the dt tour bus, which i thought was strange. he came in on the
fates tour bus, and hanged with them the whole time. the dt tour bus didn't
get there til like 5:30, after everything was set up. we saw mike playing
on a simple little drum kit, set up right inside the door. looked like a
practice set. he came out, talked to us. he was cool. labrie came out
before the show with i guess the tour manager (fat, pantera shirt) and really
pissed me off. we asked him how the tour was going, and he said "well,
perfect til we got here". i asked him why, and he said only 200 tix had been
sold. seemed like all he was concerned with was how many tickets were sold,
and how much money they would be getting. really annoyed me. he was
a lot nicer after the show, i guess becuase there ended up being over 1000
    people there, i am guessing.

after the show, about 30 minutes after, the first guy came out.. we were
hanging around the fence by the tour bus, and john p and his wife (guess it
was his wife: blonde, hot) he came out, and was really funny and nice.
he signed my vinyl copy of wdadu and then he was signing a guys shirt, and
told him to flex. the guy said "flex what" and john p started making fun
of him in a dana carvey voice, like "what a girly man, wants me to sign his
girly heart shirt" it was pretty funny.

next out was labrie. like i said, he was much nicer. he signed my promo
    copy of awake.

next was myung. very quiet, and had two security guards around him.
    signed my vinyl wdadu.

next out was derek s. he was really cool, and spent the most time with the
    crowd.

portnoy took forever to come out. after signing my stuff, i talked to him
a little bit, and he said the reason they dropped ...set the sun was lack
of crowd response. said it seemed no one knew it. he said it might cmoe
back some time. i asked if light fuse would get added, and he said he
doubted it. i didn't ask him about the cd thing, i forgot. i asked him
if he like ozric tentacles, since i just filmed them at a few shows in
texas last month. his eyes absolutely lit up, and made it a point to tell
me he just got some really nice, *live*, stuff of theirs. his emphasis on
the live part. you could really tell he is way into bootlegs, and he wants
to trade me for the ozrics shows. i told him i would bring them to the
show in houston, so we will see how it goes. i can almost guarantee he won't
be giving out any dt stuff.

    man, this is getting long.

the intro tapes are not DAT, which surprised me. they are just normal
maxell tapes. there are two of them. one is labelled "dream tape/pull
me under intro" and the other "metropolis intro". there was a DAT deck
taping the show from the board, but they did not tape the fates warning
    set, which surprised me.

the version of eve played after the show sounded the same as the japanese
version to me. i couldn't really tell, everyone was talking and making
    noise.

i guess that is all, i am going to four more shows in a row, starting
tonight in san antonio, so i will report back on those shows.

oh yeay, james said if you can, catch one of teh shows in an old theater.
(like the one in SA tonight) he said they only use half of their light
show in clubs, and the whole thing at a few select shows in theaters. he
says the full light show is amazing.

    later...

Yes, I did -- the bonus CD is only in the Japanese release, so most of us here in the U.S. don't have it...

well... I don't know bout how many people were actually there, but the limit in the place *IS* 200. and its pretty small. I can see why they were pissed off. as was I. and you're right about OKC, its SHITTY. Tulsa is much better. :)

hopefully they'll play here at the Brady (a theater) and we'll be able to see the full light show.x

Rush is definetely not going on it's 20th tour because Geddy just had a kid and wants to familize himself for a bit, and the band doesn't want to portray a going away tour, so they will record either a studio album next, or do a movie soundtrack or something. Dt's best options for an arena opening act lie with Queensryche in winter of '95 I think. I heard somewhere that they were possible option for opening act. I think a few others here on the net heard it, too.

like was said here, I think that this so-called panting brings a bit of emotion into the song and fits quite well, even though it may be annoying to some.

    > > LaBrie. And the guy posting something about looking like Fabio is > > absolutely right.

Just cuz the guy looks like a Fabio-type doesn't necessarily mean he's a poser - it's not like he's wearing any make-up or anything. And the scary thing is, in person he looks exactly the same as in the photos. In a way, he almost doesn't look like a real person...hard to explain, but really friggin' weird.... and not for nothin', but he's a pretty big guy too, in the built sense...nothin' like a Danzig, but I bet he'd kick my ass somethin' fierce! :)

    > He was, is , and always will be a poser. >

now, now, let's not be harsh....

And on another note, not to take anything from Dominici, but if I heard the Dominici version of Metropolis that I have before the I & W version, I don't think I would have nearly been as impressed with DT (that was their first song I heard) in fact, I think it might have turned me off to them, not because of the musicianship, but just the fact that the vocals by Dominici in Metropolis were horrendous.

BTW, this is not meant to start a flame war, but it is my opinion - though I'm sure many people who know what I am talking about will agree.....

    > Hardly. Maybe in the past, but now he is quite impressive, especially > his stage presence. I don't know about the I&W tour, but in B-more on > this tour, he OWNED the stage, except during solos and instrumental > sections of course. He has a very commanding stage presence.

i agree. The screaming stuff and LaBrie's enunciation of lyrics is the weakest part of his singing, but the range and feelings he puts into the songs makes up for it. I haven't listened to WDADU that much, but my first couple of impressions of Dominici was that he just didn't sing *most* of the songs with emotion - just sounded like he was reading the lyrics in tune.....
