    Subject: New Dream Theater bootlegs

    Hi,

My name is Stephane Auzilleau and I am a new recipient. I manage a kind of
French Fan Club of Dream Theater, named "Your Majesty", supported by the
band and their management. I publish a quaterly 12 pages newsletter about
the band. It is written in French. Anyone interested can contact me.

I discovered the band in 1987, when I received their first demo in my
letterbox. When I listened to it, I was totally amazed and since I am a
    huge Dream Theater fan.

I would like to add some titles to the bootleg listing because I own 7
bootlegs CD that are not listed. I would also like to give some
informations about the list of bootlegs.

It exists other audience videos: Utrecht 4/10/94, Arnsberg 4/14/93,
    Copenhagen 4/2/93, Milano 11/15/93,...

Dream Theater never played in Paris in October 1992. They did only 2 shows
in France: Paris, La Locomotive, April 13, 1993 and Paris, Elysee
    Montmartre, November 17, 1993.

The "lost in the sky" bootleg is a radio broadcast, mixed with a DAT
audience recordings for 2 tracks: "Under a glass moon" and "March of the
tyrant" (at the end of "Only a matter of time").

Addition to the CD bootleg listing:

    - Split Cd Jag Panzer / Majesty, 1993, CD (Luxumburgh)
    Reborn Classics 1001
::23,24,25,26,28 + tracks from Jag Panzer

Live and alive, vol I and II, 1993, 2CD (Germany)
    PR Records, Imm 40.90205 & 206
It is a copy of "Consciously unreal", except for the 2 last tracks that are
a guitar solo and a version of "Only a matter of time" with James La Brie
on vocals (probably from the 1992 Us tour).
    ::13,1,14,12,3,10,39,4,9,11 ::15,16,13,6,17,8,49

Dance of eternity, 1994, CD (Luxumburgh)
    Rocks 92111
1 CD recorded in Buffalo, May 18, 1993. This is a radio broadcast.
It is a little different of "Dream out loud" because it features the full
version of "Learning to live" (cut off on DOL) and "Eve"!
    ::13,14,2,15,17,50,46,10,9,18,16.

"Puppies on acid", 1994, CD (???)
    1 CD Bondage Music 009
    Audience recording, Milwaukee, June 29,1993
Great cover, with shots from the members of the band.
    ::13,14,1,15,12,21,11,17,46,2,10

    "Excellent", 1993, CD (Japan)
    1 CD Nova 09
Recorded in New York, July 22, 1993.
    ::14, 12,21,11,17,45,2,10,9,16.

    "Milan 93", 1994, 2CD (Italy)
    2CD Live Storm 52593
Radio recording, Mila, Italy, November 15, 1993.
This is the same as "Lost in the sky".

    "Live Images", 1994, 1CD (Germany)
    1 CD Living Legend 246
    Recorded in New York, 1993?
Nice cover with Dream Theater stamped into the coloured. Good sound. It
doesn't sound like the Limelight show.
    ::13,1,14,12,11,18,9,10,4,15.

That's all for now. Iam collecting bootlegs (CD, audio, video,...) and I
would like to get in touch with people that do too. Does anyone own a copy
of the US bootlegs "A fortune pulled under", "Images and tour!" and
    "Runes"?

    Cheers,

    Stephane.

I would definatly agree there.... using myself as the perfect
example... I don't play any instrument, yet I completly and totally
appreciate the complexity of DT's songs... (although this probably at
least partially comes from the fact that over half of my friends at
    home are musicians...)

I just read a post on the DT message board on AOL from the Metal Blade person, and she said that it is possible that Fates will be going over to Europe with DT...

Also, she said that when they return to the US, both will probably doing a much larger tour, but not together...

Finally, for those of you on AOL, if you don';t read the DT and prog metal folders, I think that it is time to start an attack on the eMpTyV folders asking for DT and FW videos. Goto keyword MTV, choose the thing aout tv shows (II forget exact name) in the message center, then look for the folder on bands that should be played... start follow-ups to current messages and posts new ones...

    Hello out there,

finally I got my copy of the japanese version of 'Awake' and as I searched the second-hand segment of the Record-Store I found a promotiomal CD called 'Wach Auf' (Awake), which features two tracks from Dream Theater (6:00 and Lie), two tracks of Testament and two tracks of Sick Of It All (what a neightbourhood for D.T.). No question that I bought it at once.

Chris Collins, although listenable (barely) absolutely destroyed some of the melodies and feeling on the demos. Listen to the part, "... where magic passion soars." off of the first song (I think). Sure, cheesy lyrics, but he makes it 10 times worse with his over-emphatic/dramatic tone. It's too bad I don't have the disc with me at the moment, but I remember he sounded real bad on 'A Vision' for instance. His screaming notes are in tune, but anything else is just awful. Why do you think he's better than Dominici?

I think we found out that AFPU is actually a re-arranged version of another existing bootleg, which one was it again...? Sparks '92? Not positive about that.

Runes was one of the first ones submitted to the bootleg listing back when I was handling it instead of Mike Burstin. I did see a few of the CD's when I was at a record show last year, but I had my hands full with Lost in the Sky and Dance of Eternity and could not buy one... now I wish I did! It turned out to be another copy of HSH/LILI.

I have the CD Images & Tour (no !) and a copy of a recording from a CD supposedly called Images And Tour!. They are both patchwork bootlegs compiled from the better sounding shows out there. The one I have on CD actually includes some of the Tokyo video live soundtrack on it. The other one has bits of Lords of Sound and LITS in it... The I&T CD is unimpressive, it looks even cheezier than the Dream Out Loud CD.

Do you really respect Bon Jovi? I mean,I like 'em, but I have very little respect for them. Then again you may have just been generalizing. Anyway...just my 2 sense. SLAY

Sicne I wrote what SLAY repsonded to, I feel it necessary to respond to the response... (whatever I just said) Thanks BTW for the thoguhtful response....

But I guess when you say I should give the average radio listener more credit, you cite friends who appreciate DT's complexity though not musicians. OK, what makes a musician? I would say some folks who are not "trained" as musicians still have the ear for musicianship. These friends of yours have a musician's ear, which is great. But many others hear polyrhtyhms and think there are mistakes going on. That was my point. I wasn;t trying to set up some kind of disdain for non-musicians who like simplistic music. (not that simplicity is any less inherently musical)

As far as respecting a band that deviates from 4/4 you and I seem to have totally opposite perspectives on this, but maybe we're really saying the same thing. You say you like Bon Jovi but don't respect them as musicians. Well it comes down to taste. No matter how much we analyze music for musicianship, some things we just like because we like it - pure aesthetics that groove with something in us. But I was saying that there are musicians whose sound and style I may not like enough to listen to them alot, but I respect their musicianship from an analytical perspective. My example - I am into the HORDE scene, and I tried really hard to get into Phish. I just can't do it - BUT as musicians, I really respect their abilities to fuse jazz and rock and whatever else they do. And I consider them amazing musicians.

So do musicians need to be more artists or entertainers? I think both. I enjoy lyrics from some groups on paper, but can't listen to the delivery. The beauty of DT (and Rush and Yes and many others ) is that they combine the best of both. So for musicians who love to hear good musicality expressed while still rocking inside, Dream Theater is it. That's why all of us are writing andfreading this net, right?

Did that clarify anything from my original post?

Hi, [Mark D. Scudder - regarding JL and CD.] I have to agree with Mark - it's largely a personal preference issue. It's like discussing the tone of a musical instrument. I have gone to a harp store with a friend, where we tried out the same set of instruments and come away with diametricly opposed opinions. ("This one has such a clear top end" - "It's too harsh". "That one feels like it's strung with rubberbands" - "It's easy to play". "That one has a good strong set of bass wires" - "It sounds muddy." Still baffles me. But then, his playing style *works* on the harps I don't like.) Personally, I find WDADU a more compelling album than I&W. (Though, with songs like Metropolis it's a tough call...) OTOH, my friends prefer I&W and find it more accessible - probably for exactly the same reasons I like WDADU. Subject change: Anyone on the list going to the Dec 8 show? -- Tim (tbyrd@microsim.com)

New Stuff --------- 0.1 Is Kevin Moore really out of Dream Theater?

Yes. He left over musical differences, and the split was amicable, so there is no bad blood brewing. Good luck to Kevin in his future efforts. Derek Sheranian (Kiss, Alice Cooper) is taking Kevin's place on the keys. This might or might not change after the Awake tour.

0.2 What can you tell me about the Awake tour?

    * They have already played much of the USA and will wrap up this leg of the tour on December 9 in Los Angeles.

    * They will play Japan and Europe in the winter and spring of 1995. They will be back to the US afterward for a full tour.

    * Members of the Ytsejam list have had excellent luck meeting the band after the shows and the band is very much into this tour and into their own zone. They have been freely autographing and allowing pics to be taken, pretty cool of them. Some Ytsejammers were given backstage passes as a gift through the net and it's been quite an experience. When DT is huge and has 15 studio albums under their belt, such as the likes of Rush, we humble netters can say we met them on their third tour. Not bad!

    * Talk to Portnoy, not Petrucci, about bootlegs. Talk to Petrucci, not Portnoy, about Kevin's departure. Other than that, topics are fair game.

    1. A Brief History of Dream Theater -----------------------------------

Dream Theater first came to be in September 1985 when Berklee friends John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy got together and decided there was some music to be played. They drafted in old school friend Kevin Moore for the keys, and "Majesty" came to exist.

Their first efforts at getting material down on tape were called the Majesty Demos. Ineffective singer Chris Collins did the vocals on eight very progressive-sounding tracks. In March 1986 the Majesty demos were finished. 1000 copies sold within six months. Bootleg CDs of the Majesty demos continue to sell even today.

That November, Chris left the band, as he was a mismatch all along. A year went by without a singer and without a record deal, and more demos were cut. Instrumental versions of the songs we now know as Afterlife, Ytse Jam, and The Killing Hand were among them.

In November of 1987 vocalist Charlie Dominici joined the band and a record was finally cut on the Mechanic label. This is when the issue of the name nearly stopped Dream Theater before they started. A Las Vegas band called Majesty forced a name change, and DT considered several different possibilities. Glasser, Mi and Magus, and the like were tossed about and rejected. Mike Portnoy's father Howard suggested they use the name of a California cinema complex, and the name Dream Theater was chosen.

DT quickly found out that Mechanic could not effectively promote their record or finance the tour they needed in order to promote it on their own, so they left the label. Charlie was fired because he didn't have DT's progressive plans on his agenda, and he had always been weak in a live setting. Time went by... a LOT of time.

Finally, in late 1991, Kevin James LaBrie of Winter Rose beat out fellow throats John Arch, Steve Stone, Chris Cintron, and John Hendricks for the vocalist spot. His audition was fantastic, and an apt indicator of the future potential of DT, as he sang his way through an acoustic To Live Forever, and demo tapes of Learning to Live and Take The Time.

EastWest records, then ATCO Atlantic, signed DT and they cut the record Images And Words. Radio picked up on the opening track, Pull Me Under, and IAW slowly started accumulating sales. DT began to field a fan base that was obsessive and musically inclined, a fan base that had been disappointed by late-80's and early-90's glam and grunge and had held onto their Rush, Yes, and Floyd records, hoping for the day when another such band would come about. They cut a video for Pull Me Under and it actually got rotation on MTV... a small miracle in itself. Two more videos were cut, Another Day and Take The Time, and the former got marginal airplay.

By halfway through the Music In Progress Tour '93, IAW had gone gold and several cuts from it were gaining heavy airplay, as well as kindling a deep-seeded fan interest in unreleased recordings and bootlegs. Import shipments of When Dream And Day Unite sold quickly. Dream Theater cut a live EP in April 1993 called Live at the Marquee. Later that year, a live video called Live in Tokyo was released. Still, the fans of DT needed more. Through all of the spring and summer of 1994, there was a veritable explosion of available bootlegs and rarities.

DT took their own time, so to speak, in writing and recording Awake, their third studio album. By June it was finished and would begin production, and was set for an October 4 release date. It was then that the sky itself fell on Dream Theater.

Kevin Moore decided to leave the band to pursue his own musical interests. On August 8th, the split was made final. Several possible replacements were tossed about, and none has yet been finalized. Jordan Rudess played a gig with them but then left to go back to his own band. Derek Sheranian, formerly of Kiss and Alice Cooper, is currently playing for the band on the Awake tour. Things seem to be working out fairly well. Whether it will be final or not is as yet unknown.

DT cut a video for Lie, and it was given the same attention on MTV that all non-rap acts get, but Awake still sold heavily. The tour has moved into high gear, and 1995 is right around the corner.

    2. Questions about the members of DT ------------------------------------ 2.1 Who are the current members of Dream Theater? They are Kevin James LaBrie (vocals), John Petrucci (guitar), Michael Portnoy (drums), and John Myung (bass).

2.2 Why did Charlie Dominici leave DT?

According to Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci, he was released because of several things, but most importantly because he didn't fit in with the band in a few important ways. He was far older than the rest of them, had a different idea of what DT should be, and lacked ability as a frontman when performing live. There were apparently a few personality conflicts at work. The band and Dominici are not currently in contact with each other.

2.3 What was James LaBrie doing before he joined the band?

Kevin James LaBrie (they dropped the Kevin because they would have otherwise confused him with Kevin Moore, and two Johns are already hard enough to deal with, says Petrucci) sang for a Canadian glam band called Winter Rose. He was selected from among 20 auditions and over 200 tapes by DT during the making of IAW. This sentence is censored. ;) 2.4 Who inspired the band members the most? In an interview, Mike Portnoy cited Neil Peart of Rush as his greatest influence and favourite drummer. His other influences include Terry Bozzio and Vinnie Calauata, but Portnoy says Peart is his drum "God". And since I've been mailed no less than 4 different "correct" spellings of Vinnie's last name, don't mail me with a correction please!

Petrucci has two groups of influences, he said in an interview. The Steves and the Als. The Steves are Steve Morse, Steve Howe, Steve Vai, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. The Als are Alex Lifeson, Al Dimeola, and Alan Holdsworth.

John Myung's bass idols are Steve Harris and Geddy Lee.

As a band, they are influenced most (according to Portnoy) by Rush, Queensryche, Yes, Marillion, Genesis, and Kansas. Those groups make a few appearances here in this FAQ forasmuch as they relate to DT.

Petrucci individually likes Pantera. The whole band got on very well with the Galactic Cowboys. Much like their listeners, they have very broad and varied tastes. Portnoy is a regular concertgoer, and has been met at Rush and King's X concerts by people on the Ytsejam list. 2.5 Andrea Held Leone and Ralph R. Dominici Sr. are mentioned in the liner notes to WDADU as the dedicants. What relation to the band are they? Andrea is Portnoy's sister. Ralph is Charlie's father. 2.6 Marillion is thanked in the liners in IAW, whats the relation? Dream Theater opened for Marillion in New York (anyone have the exact date?). Mike Portnoy also said, "We're all really big fans. I really dig 'Misplaced Childhood'." Whether Dream Theater and Phish are familiar with each other is not certain. 2.7 What musical instrument sponsorships does DT have?

Mike Portnoy--Mapex Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Drum Workshop Pedals & Hi-hats, Latin Percussion, Remo Heads and Hot Sticks. Mike used to play Tama but changed his kit between IAW and Awake. John Petrucci--Ibanez guitars, Mesa Boogie Amps, Dimarzio Pick-ups, Dunlop Picks, Wah Pedals.

John Myung--Tung Bases, Mesa Boogie Amps, D'Addario Strings

2.8 Is there a Dream Theater fan club?

Yes. Send S.A.S.E or I.R.C to: Dream Theater International Fan Club Midtown Station PO Box 1188 New York, NY 10018

2.9 Who thought up the name for the band?

Mike Portnoy's father Howard thought they should name it after the moviehouse near where they grew up. It was called The Dream Theater. Initially, they recorded a demo by that name, then named the band after it.

2.10 Where did DT go to school?

The Johns and Portnoy went to the Berklee (sic) school of music in Boston, MA, not Berkeley as has been erroneously mentioned on rec.music.progressive. Berklee is a music-dedicated school that has produced the likes of Steve Vai and Chris DeGarmo. Kevin Moore went to SUNY-Fredonia, as has been confirmed. Anyone know if Labrie did college? For that matter, how about Johanssen?

2.11 Now that Kevin Moore left, and the whole reason LaBrie used "James" was to sidestep the confusion, will he go back to "Kevin LaBrie"?

Good question. :) 3. Questions about DT performances/appearances/miscellany --------------------------------------------------------- 3.1 What are the Majesty demos? Before they were Dream Theater, they were Majesty. However, there was already a band called Majesty, so they could not release the demos. They wound up on bootlegs and evaluation tapes. Between singers, Dream Theater did still more demos. These are referred to as the Dream Theater Demos due to the timeframe. Some of the songs DT has demoed include:

Another Won Your Majesty A Vision Two Far Vital Star March of the Tyrant A Late Summer Rain Schizophrenia Afterlife The Death of Spark Resurrection of Ernie Cry for Freedom Gates of Babylon Ytsejam The Killing Hand Mission: Impossible Golden Slumbers * O Holy Night Don't Look Past Me To Live Forever Metropolis A Change of Season Grab That Feel $ Creep With Tonality % Wanted Dead or Alive (sort of a joke) Caught In a Web

    * Also called The Golden Weight $ Later renamed Take The Time % Later renamed Learning to Live

3.2 What does the "symbol" DT uses mean?

The "symbol" can be seen on the IAW disc, on the IAW cover on top of the bed, on the WDADU cover, etc. It is the letter "M" of "MAJESTY" in a stylized font, says Portnoy. It was once used by Mary Queen of Scots.

3.3 What does the burning heart symbolize?

According to Portnoy, it was original keyboardist Kevin Moore's idea and essentially a copy of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The barbed wire represented obstacles and difficulties, the heart endurance and strength, and the fire their energy and passion.

3.4 Who has toured with Dream Theater? Psychotic Waltz, the Galactic Cowboys, Saigon Kick, Damn The Machine, Meanstreak (with guitarist Rena Sands, Petrucci's wife), I Mother Earth, Fates Warning, Pushmonkey, and others among a slew of local acts the band likes to use for openers. 3.5 What producers has Dream Theater worked with? Terry Date produced WDADU. Terry Brown (Broon), the producer who took Rush through their first eleven albums, produced the promotional discs from WDADU. David Prater produced IAW. Prater was the ex-drummer/producer of Santana. Doug Oeberkircher produced and mixed Live At The Marquee. Duane Barron and John Purdell produced Awake.

3.6 What songs has Dream Theater made videos for?

Pull Me Under Take The Time Another Day Lie Caught In a Web Another Day did not make MTV's playlist, even though DT felt it had the most MTV potential. Pull Me Under was shot live and has received the most airplay. Take The Time was shot as a video production, however the song had to be shortened a lot and many unexpected jumps in the song throw the video off pace. Lie got regular rotation. Caught In a Web is new. 3.7 What songs has Dream Theater played live? A better question would probably be which ones have they NOT played live, since they play just about all of them. Here are the songs that either don't get played live, or have never been recorded live at any known show. A Vision Too Far Scarred Space Dye Vest

Here are a few songs that have ONLY been performed live, and never recorded in any studio or demo (yet): Bombay Vindaloo Moon Bubbles Barfbag That "mystery jam" from Milano

3.8 Who plays the saxophone on "Another Day"? Jay Beckenstein of Spiro Gyra, who owned the studio where IAW was put to tape (Bear Trax).

3.9 Will DT ever release production versions of the old Majesty demos?

In some cases, they did just that (see the discog). Mike Portnoy was asked about this, and said that while they might be fun to play live, it really wouldn't get the band anywhere to release new recordings of them. Since DT is concerned with moving forward, he said, it will likely not happen any more than it already has. Half the first album was production from the demos, but the remaining demos are "just too old." They did play an instrumental "March of the Tyrant" at Palasesto in Milano, Italy in November 1993. 4. Questions about the songs themselves --------------------------------------- 4.1 Who sings on the satiric "Wanted Dead or Alive" demo?
