How many times has this been covered on the list? 20? I'm kinda slow and Mom has me back on my medication. Well, here goes... Who sings on SDV? I just assumed that it was Kevin James L., but now I remember someone mentioning Mike. Am I even close? Should I have my CD (and Net account) repossessed for asking? Pleeze give some consideration for the memory-impaired Ytsejammers!

While I'm at it, I have a new comment about Awake. I'm not real fond of the bass guitar sound/mix. As a bass player, I really listen for and enjoy the lines of my favorite players. Now, I know that they can't feature John's bass like they do for Steve in Maiden, but geez... I can barely hear John unless they make a conscious effort to feature him. I think he has too much low end in his sound and not enough color. The sound does do a great job of carrying the music, though. I guess what I'm kinda talking about is the bass sound of recent Megadeth (even though Ellefson plays with a pick - barbarism!) and stuff like is on FW's No Exit. Stuff that lends a rich sound to the music while keeping some individual color. I don't know if this sound has a place in DT, but it's got me wondering. Lemme know what you guys think. I was hoping for a better sound than on IAW, where his sound sometimes sounded like a well executed fart. In other places, it fit beautifully. Then again, he was playing a damn Specter! :)

On another down side, I always had fun playing Harris's parts, but I listen to John and end up gape-mouthed and drooling. Duh... Good Lord, the tapping on Metroplolis! Oh well.

Pretty long, but I hope you respond anyway.

    Toodles! Glenn

To all Baltimore people going to the show Oct 27, if you are interested at meeting before the show email me and we can set up a list.

Looks like Queensryche will have to wait until after the DT concert before I even think about buying it. I probably will just wait until I go get the new Megadeth on Halloween (or day after).

I will be listening to only Awake until at least the concert. I didn't even play a tribute for Danny Gatton (a great guitarist from the DC area) who died a week or so ago.

Has anyone else noticed the Wheel of Fortune riff in Scarred? For those of you who don't know, Wheel of Fortune is a US TV game show.

It occurs right at 5:30 and last for a little while. It's on a clean guitar tone. Actually I don't know if the show still uses that theme, I haven't watched it in a while.

BTW - that part that starts at 5:30 and last until about 6:25 is just the best! It keeps building and building the the music gets really tense and I feel like I wanna explode then the songs bursts into the chorus. The is probably the only chorus that I like on the whole album. I really don't like the chorus in Voices, the part about like a scream but sort of silent, plus I can't stand to hear him when he actually says the words "voices" is just sounds awful.

While I got the disc in and I picking times, I thought that I would point probably my favorite part on the disc which I think (IMHO) shows what Dream Theater is all about. It's in Erotomania from 2:10 - 2:51. Especially the part that starts right at 2:24. That is my favorite Dream Theater. Since Dream Theater can be so many different things, I think everone likes a certain one of there styles or personalities if you will. For some they like the Dream Theater at the begining of Mirror, but that just not the Dream Theater style that I like. I could get that from Pantera.

Anyone agree? Maybe I'm just Kevin fleeting....

Well, I really don't have a review of Awake in the normal fashion, but just some general thoughts. Do the samples bother anyone else? One of the things I liked about DT was that they didn't have many samples, and the ones they did fit right in with the music almost invisibly (like in Take the Time). Unfortunately, I find the current samples extremely annoying. My favorite song is Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, but that solo in the middle sounds like "Oh, we need to make the song longer" rather than "This is a natural progression of the music." I thought Awake was okay until I listened to I&W today. Unfortunately, the chord progression and jazziness which filled I&W in songs like Take the Time (the instrumental section), Learning to Live (the instrumental section again) and Under a Glass Moon are just not present in Awake, or not very often at all. SDV is very good, but also a depressing note on which to end the album (which is not a major complaint because the song is good). The trilogy is good as well, but the other songs just don't feel right. Most are decent songs in their own right, but they're the quality I expect from a less-refined band, unfortunately. If I didn't know the chronological order of the DT albums, I might guess that Awake came out first, then When Dream and Day Unite, and then Images and Words. To truly appreciate Images and Words, I recommend listening to it now that you have listened to Awake, and the differences should scream out.

    To all ytsejamers from Japan.

At last I got Awake Japanese edition today ! Many people gave their comments of every tune from Awake. So I'm going to tell you about Eve---As you know Japanese bonus truck.

Eve is a independant single CD ,which is included in normal jacket. In Japan single CD is about half size of full album. If your CD player isn't adaptable for it, you need adapter to play. But it isn't so expensive. :-)

Eve is about 5 minutes long. Begining with a synthesizer calmly, then after about 30 second piano part steals into it. Afterwards he continues to play beautiful bracing melody..... The first half John Petrucci plays with clear tone, then halfway through the tune he changes his timbre for distorted one and plays composed solo. Eve is a slow tempo ballad. SDV is also piano oriented song. On the one hand I got dark impression from SDV the other hand I felt hope from Eve.

Kevin takes the initiative in Eve. Although now he isn't a member of DT, he left magnificent work for us. Good bye Kevin. Thanks.

Nope, it's not Mike. Listening to it just to be sure, it is definitely James. It's not John P. either, as I've heard him sing, and it ain't his voice either.

    Hey,

Finally got hold of 'Awake' here, and although good, I was missing the real hot Petrucci & Moore stuff. It also seemed that Labrie had a cold on some of the songs -- to rough.

I guess it probably explains a lot that they didn't have to bust their own asses with the producers this time. Hmm.

When can I get 'To Live Forever' and 'A Change of Season' ??

I was listening to Silent Man a few minutes ago, and I noticed how much John P. (who I'm assuming does backup, as he did on a video I have from a Christmas show) sounds like Ray Alder from Fates Warning (esp. on Inside Out, with the sort of lispy sound) Did anyone else notice this?

If it is the OJ quote in SDV, I would think the person talking (NFL commentator) was Al Michaels, of Monday Night Football......

Just thought I 'd throw that in there......:)

When you talk about the girl on the IAW cover holding the mirror that's on the AWAKE cover, I can see the similarity between the two. I think that it's just the same frame. In Wait For Sleep, which I figure has to do with the girl on the cover, it says: God give me the power to take breath from a breeze And call life from a cold metal frame

I had always thought that she was holding a picture frame containing the picture of someone she loved who had died. This is my interpretation. What do you thing?

Also I was always curious about this. In QR's song Anybody Listening? There is a line which stood out for me.

Is there anyone who smiles without a mask? What's behind the word - images they know will please us?

Empire was released in 1990 and IAW was recorded in 1991. Did DT get the idea of Images and Words from this bit from QR? I've always been curious about that. If anyone has thoughts on this please let me know what you think....

OK, You guys might think i'm crazy but I think one possible interpretation of "The Mirror" concerns casual sex! Perhaps Mike P. feels like he has betrayed himself as well as a trusting girl friend. I know a couple of girls that DT invited to their hotel after a show in Orange Park, FL. When these girls told me this, I said: "Oh wow! Where are they staying? Are they having an after show party or something?" The girl replied: "Well, they (DT) said 'not to tell any guys'."

"The Mirror" might have been inspired by months of groupie patronizing while on Images & Tour! Perhaps Mike P. started to feel guilty and decided to look the problem right in the eye (himself in the mirror).

What do you guys think??? Who knows??? Later, Jay Peele (INFERNO) jpeele@unf6.cis.unf.edu

Hey... I was just listening to the CD and I think I MIGHT have found a repeated theme... is the part of Scarred that goes "And how come you don't understand me" the same melody at the start of LSoaD?

Has anyone found any others besides the Eroto/SM and Mirror/SDV repeats?
