I personally don't think Petrucci sounds like Vai and it looks like he
wasn't fasting before creating this album! The only link I see is the
7-string guitar.
To the person who commented about cd problems: I'm having problems
playing Awake on my cd player. I get "no disk" and when it does play
there is a lot of noise. The weird thing is that it plays sometimes.
I'm going to get a new one and see what happens. Has anyone else had
problems with the disk?

When you're talking about the part "Death is Sex" it could have a historical
background. In historical lyrics and poems, when somebody refers to death,
they may be referring to sex. I believe it's in Carmina Burana, but it refers
to someone dying, meaning that they reached an orgasm... It was a very common
parallel in old poetry and epics....

Has anyone noticed that the melody from SDV is blatently obvoius is The Mirror?
It seems like throughout the album, Kevin replays segments of his more
prominant parts in the background of other songs. I've heard in in a least
four songs on the album...

sounds like it should have been on Vai's Sex and Religion album.

Hi!
Here goes my contribution to the 4 top songs on Awake:
1. Scarred
2. The Silent Man
3. Space-Dye Vest
4. 6:00
I also have a question about the fan club, which you guys who already are members should be able to answer:
How much money should I send to the fan club address mentioned in the Awake
booklet?
One final question for the people who've now (I think) gotten the Japanese
version of Awake:
Can you please describe what the booklet looks like (not the cover art, more
like what's in there - the lyrics, liner notes, pictores etc.) so that we'll
know how it differs from the "original" booklet?
Well, I guess that's all for now. Keep on rockin' to Awake!

Hello
About 1 Week ago, I heard my AWAKE!!
Eve is my favorite song. But Eve and SDV remind me of Kevin.....
(I hope Kevin come back DT!)
Well, Eve is lyrical. When I hear this song, I remember seeing very beautiful
evening -- In the twilight, western sky dye colors.
I thought sounds of Eve is a close resemblance I&W rather than Awake.
Of course I'm pleased with Awake too.
Thank you.

I think that by far the best QR album is "Operation: MindCrime". This
album is great! What';s unique about it too is that it tells a story in
the music. After Mindcrime, I think Empire is next, then The Warning, then
Rage for Order (only because their original is a rip-off; 4 songs for like
15 bucks or whatever)

My friend Jim was complaining to me about this.
It seems that his CD player skips and does other weird things to CD's
which have a lot of artwork on them. The thicker the "paint job," the
more the player freaks out.
His CD player gets pretty warm after it's been on for awhile, so the
theory is that the paint silkscreened on the disc is expanding and causing
it to warp ever so slightly, but enough to create tracking problems.
This might explain some peoples' problems. Or not.

I agree pretty much. If a sample is the right length, the right tone, etc,
essentially if it fits into the song seamlessly (no example being better than
the clip from _Cinema Paradiso_ in "Take the Time") it adds a lot to the total
quality. If it is forced into place, if it is repeated, if it otherwise
disrupts the natural flow of the song, it should not be there.
In _Awake_, I think samples are definitely overused. I disagree about "Space
Dye Vest" -- I believe it makes the best use of samples. In "6:00" I think
the clips detract from the musicality of the song.

In all the cds released in my area (mid Wisconsin), there was a reply card
asking for various information from DT listeners (how long have you liked the
band, did you buy Images and Words, did you buy the Live in Tokyo video, etc.).
The picture on back of the card was the same as the small photo of the band in
the liner.

What do you think the odds are that fans will be able to stay afterwards and
meet the guys in the band? I'm seeing the show November 4 in Milwaukee, and my
friends and I would sell our souls for a chance to talk to them.

I agree that it's cool. I don't think there are many bands out there that
would dare do things like that. Dream Theater uses bits of music that could be
devoleped into full pieces, and instead they play them for 20 seconds in an 8
minute song. The fact that they are CREATIVE enough not to fear running out of
ideas . . . it's impressive. Heck, listen to Metropolis again.

Believe it or not, I had the same problem. It reached the point that I had to
give up listening to DT when walking (a couple of miles to high school). If
it's so hard to LISTEN to their music, imagine PLAYING it!

That's strange--my copy of Rage for Order has 11 songs on it :) (I
would rank it right up there with Mindcrime, it's better than Empire,
plus it has one of Lisa Dalbello's great tunes on it!)
I think you've confused it with the original Queen of the Ryche EP
(which has some cool songs on it--I bought it when it first came out).
For more information, please contact shag and get on Screaming in Digital

this, especially since they're all married or getting married. Can you
comment?

Yes YES!! That part reaches out and grabs me!! I get chills just
thinking about it.

The "O.J." sample where the announcer says "This is his greatest
challenge ever, he's going to have to face it". Brrr. :-)

It includes additionally:
- CD single
- Japanese booklet
- Japanese liner notes(don't ask me to translate
what it says :-)
- Comments from DT members including Kevin,
and its Japanese translation
- The lyrics, translated into Japanese.
(Of course, mis-translated the "Martens on angel" :-)
Well, I'd like to repost Ikeda's message, quoting all the comments
from DT members. I'm afraid some of you may not have received
since it had some error in his mail header. (The damn mailer system
of Niftyserve!!)

Hi, to everybody on this list.
I've got the AWAKE Japanese edition and it features the members' message
for Japanese fans. I'll quote it just for your interests.
John Petrucci:
Being prepared was a key element that contributed to the successful
recording of AWAKE. Unlike our previous studio releases, this one had the
benefit of hundreds of live performances shaping sounds and developing new
ideas for equipment and instrumentation. This, coupled with a trusting
relationship with our producers, resulted in a truer expression of creative
vision. We are very pleased with this recording and excited about playing it
live.
James LaBrie:
I had a great time recording, and working with John and Duane was a pleasure
because not only do they get amazing sounds, but they truly understand the
music.
John Myung:
With the recording of this album, sonically I think we've all made
individual improvements. Each of us has a distinct sound, you can hear each
instrument by itself and also hear how they all work together.
Mike Portnoy:
Upon finishing the never-ending world tour for I & W , the five of us found
ourselves bursting with creative excitement ready to explode.
The shrapnel of these ideas is what you are now listening to. I feel that
AWAKE is our most diverse and complete work to date, and I hope it is as
enjoyable for you to listen to as it was for us to create.
Kevin Moore:
I had fun experimenting with keyboard sounds with John & Duane. I'm very
happy with the raw quality we came up with.
Well, that's all of their messages. It seems that Kevin was not much into
this album from his words, don't you think?
BTW, Eve is great.... It always makes me wanna cry. Something beautiful
touches to my mind. Of course, the rest of AWAKE is very good music, I
think.

Hmm. Well, is the first part with Julian Sands, I believe, taken from 'A

Well, I finally decided to ask my sysop about making a home page, and
he said that I just have to make one, and he would work on putting the
links in the correct place (file system links, not page links) so I am
making one. I am calling it "Caught In A Wide World Web" (I forget
who came up with the title... someone in Maryland... hope you don't
mind me using it... (email me and I'll give you credit for the name
if you would like:)). Anyway, I am putting alot of links there, such
as both DT WWW pages (so I won't have too much DT stuff besides links
and text files), but if anyone else has some cool home pages, let me
know and I'll attach your pages also.

I was just wondering how you are hearing the "new from the womb" part in
CIaW. I hear the whole chorus, even the alternate verse at the end of the
song. The "Re-moved from the wo-rld" is sort of silent in the first
syllable and the last one. It is an interesting interpretation, but I
still see it as far fetched. Also, how could a 'baby' have so many
problems (ie: entangled in the reality of life or barely making the ends
come together in a manageable way.)??
Oh, to the guy who has the quote from CIaW in his sig... Michael Burstin I
believe it is. Are you misquoting the original lyrics, or is there a line
in the middle of the song that says, "Numb from the world". I think it
says that sometimes, but am just wondering if I am hearing things or not.
The lyrics printed in the CD cover never mention the phrase, "Numb from
the world", but THAT really seems to be what is slipped in the middle
chorus. Is is just me...or what?!
Thanks,
