Well...never having seen the German version, all I can say is that the Japenese version has an insert in it that has all the lyrics on one side and a bunch of stuff in Japenese on the other (with band names sprinkled through out it like RUSH and Galactic Cowboys and a bunch of others. Anyone fluent in Japenese know what all that is saying?).

I'm just annoyed that I had to pay $17 for the German one because my US one (which I bought when it came out) got ripped off (along with 90 other CD's and a CD player *sigh*). ______________________________________________________________________ Michael G. People in the UK: hi, I currently waffle from Japan but I'm losing this privilege at the end of the month. I will be back in the UK from December, without internet access. I would be more than happy to attend concerts/get togethers etc in the London area (or not too far away). Give me a ring from the beginning of Dec on 081-567-2927. This has an answering machine (currently) with a message from my sister on it. Thanks,

I think the only difference (besides price) between the German and Japanese versions of LatM is that the German has Surrounded where the Japanese has Another Day.

I've been thinking about the instrumental portion of this song since the first time that I heard it and after listening to it again tonight I've come to the conclusion that this portion of the album just sounds BIG! Big in the sense that everything is well balanced and that it doesn't sound like 4 instruments playing, and the keyboards just have this HUGE bouyant "I'm really holding all of this together" kind of feel. IMHO this is about the best part of the album. Really well written with nothing sounding like it's out of place or unneeded.

Also, is it just me, or does the last chord in IF sound as if it could be held over to the beginning of Erotomania?

It's not my first post, but it's been awhile. I decided I coulddn't stand just lurking anymore. Now that I've listened to Awake for six weeks, I think I've chosen my favorites: 1. SDV (and Kevin is still my hero!) 2. 6:00 3. Voices/Silent Man 4. Lifting Shadows

While I've learned much from each of you regarding the technical aspect of Dream Theater's music (your comments make me go back and listen to pieces of songs and pick up bass lines, guitar riffs, etc) my initial reaction to DT's music is from a purely emotional level!

Having recieved the advance tape of Awake just after hearing of Kevin's departure, I spent the first few listens in tears - feeling the obvious sadness and pain expressed in songs like SDV. I &W was the same for me - reaching inside and pulling emotions to the surface. It is this aspect of DT's music that sets them apart (for me) from ALL other bands. Togethr, these five musicians have created pure magic.

Thanks to all of you on the list for continuing to enlighten me with your own opinions and musical insights :) You're the best!

Not to turn this into a QR list, but I never realized how much I love AWAKE until I heard Promised Land. I should reserve judgement until I've heard it some more, but my first impression was, "This is what I waited four years for?" Most of these songs are so moody, they make Della Brown sound like a peppy pop tune. A lot of people loved Empire (myself included), but they also take a lot of shit for it. I don't think this album will help in that respect.

To salvage a little DT content, the two John's are interviewed in the November issue of Guitar World (and they chose to put THE ARTIST FORMERLY KNOWN AS PRINCE on the cover - ARRRGGHHH!!!!!). Anyway, Myung does a fair amout of the talking and had some interesting things to say, but the real jem was when the interviewer asked Petrucci about being slammed by the Blind Melon idiots. Petrucci handled it with class (what would you expect) by saying, "I think most musicians who are really into music and studying and expanding are probably way more open-minded than people who are defensive and unwilling to accept other kinds of music." And that was it. Just thought that might be of interest.

Impressive. :) I was quite overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and *many* thanks again to all who responded. If there were some of you that missed this "write to Kevin" thing the first time around for whatever reason, the offer still stands. I'll keep compiling the letters & sending them to him as long as they keep coming. :)

I sent it off as scheduled (after binding all of the notes together in a nice folder w/title page & everything, of course :) and will be sure to let everyone here know when I hear from him again. In my own personal letter that I sent w/the package, I made a point of letting him know that if he had any sort of message for YJ in response to the letters, or leaving the band, his future plans, etc., that I would be more than glad to relay it for him to this list. Well, we finally got DT in Canada... Two weeks later!! I hate it when they do that, I don't know why it's the same date. And of course, I come from a small city so when I ask record stores for DT, they say, "Who??". Oh well, at least now I've got it too. I knew practically everything about it before I got it...

I really like Awake, but it's hard to compare with I&W because it's different. The technicality is the same, but James' voice and melodies (mostly keyboard playing) are not the same. The keyboard sound is more of that like an organ or something (especially in 6:00). But overall, it's a great album and I love it. They never cease to amaze me.

    My fave 4 are:

    1. Caught In A Web 2. Scarred 3. Space-Dye Vest 4. The Mirror/Lie

Voices came close to getting the 4 spot. That's a really good song. The only song I don't really enjoy on the album is The Silent Man. My favorite moments are the extended solo at the end of Lie, the chorus of CiaW and the part where he says "Blood heal me, Fear change me' in Scarred. That's the coolest sig change!!!!!!! BTW, someone here said he didn't know if he liked SDV better than QR's Someone Else???? Well, they are not comparable. Granted, Someone Else? is nice, but is not in the same league as SDV!!! I bought the QR CD yesterday, and it's pretty good, but I'll have to give it a few more listens, because I fail to see what's so great about it yet.

Oh, in one more non-DT related note, did anyone post the location for the Jim Matheos (FW) IRC conference yet?? Could someone please let me know?? Thankx!

In regards to the "Conan O'Brien" sample in SDV, I did something neat last night. I'm getting new main channel speakers for my stereo soon, so I took one of my old ones and hooked it up through my "center channel" outputs (it's a Dolby Pro Logic surround system) and I played SDV through only the center channel.

Here's the logic. Center channel speakers are meant to take only the *monaurally mixed* signals, and leave the rest to the main and surround speakers. This naturally makes vocals -- and *samples* -- a helluva lot clearer.

I've been listening to the 180/Houston sample, and it seems like after he says, "it's a *dry* heat," I could have sworn I heard a studio audience *laugh*! It's probably impossible to hear without a center channel, but somebody asked for confirmation that the sample was Conan. It very well could be.

[Keast Michael Said ] >>P.S. I am interested in hearing Fates Warning. Can I get some >>suggestions about which is their best album? <<

I personally think that *No Exit* is their best album, but I love them *ALL*...Here is a little capslized review of each (sorry for the Non-DT-Topic guys):

NIGHT ON BROCKEN/SPECTRE WITHIN/AWAKEN THE GUARDIAN - I put these first three albums together because they are all very similar in style...All feature original lead vocalist John Arch and all are in the early Iron Maiden vain ("Killers"/Paul Dianno era)...There are some true FW classics on these records including "Damnation", "The Apparition", "Fata Morgana" etc. - If you like early Metal (with lots of wizards and warlocks type lyrics ala Ronnie James Dio) mixed with a technical/progressive edge then these albums are for you....

NO EXIT - The debut of current lead singer Ray Alder and last album with drummer Steve Zimmerman, this record runs the gamut from all out crunch on "Anarchy Divine" to the beautiful Epic "The Ivory Gate Of Dreams" which clocks a whopping 21:25....This is not their most *accessible* album (for non-ProgMetal fans) except for "Silent Cries" which recieved *some* airplay, but this is the epitome of all things Metal <g>

PERFECT SYMMETRY - This album marks the debut of current drummer Mark Zonder (of Warlord fame), he adds an amazingly technical touch to their music. Symmetry also marked an end of the real "heavy" Fates Warning sound and a move to a more orchestrated (lots of clean guitar and even some Keys [courtesy of Kev Moore <sigh>] and Violin) and progressive songrwriting ala Rush...This album features their first semi-Commercial hit with "Through Different Eyes", and perhaps the greatest FW song ever recorded "At Fates Hands"....

PARALLELS - Without question the most commercially accessible FW album to date, if you like *big* hooks/choruses and lotsa memorable melodies then this one is for you...The production (by Terry Brown of Rush fame) is crystal clear, and there really isn't a bad track (IMHO) on the whole album..."Life In Still Water" is of particular note to DT fans because James sings Back-up on it....."Eye To Eye" should have been a "hit", but their label "flaked out" and provided ZERO support....

INSIDE OUT - Their latest release, a terrific combination of PS/Parallels era Fates with Brocken/Spectre/Guardian era Fates, due in part to the return of Bill Metoyer (who worked on their early albums) as Producer...There are some also some *great* hooks on this record ("Oustide Looking In", "Shelter Me") as well as some really progressive stuff ("Monument")...Since I've only had for about 3 weeks (less) I can't go into real detail, but I love it <g>

The server might not accept the stats one, b/c it does takes processor time, but I think the other one should work at any time (I tried the stats one a few days ago, and got a message that it could not complete my request at the time)

    Hi everyone!

It just hit me, why not ask you over there (the US) and for that matter you other guys in other parts of the world how Awake has charted in your respective countries, ok it's not that important but quite interesting. Got the idea just after I found out that Awake is in the 5th position in the Swedish album-chart. The other top-5 are like REM and some Swedish artists and compilations (that's like really popular stuff), but DT at #5!!! That's pretty damn good! (Awake entered last week at #16.)

On the subject of themes on the album: I know that we've discussed that bits of 'Silent Man' can be heard in Erotomania, but I don't know if anyone has noticed that right before the SM part in Erotomania it sounds almost like the part in 'Scarred' where it goes '...how come you don't understand me', it's at least 'the same' chord-progression and has quite the same feel to it. Go check it out!!!

I'm fixing some personal WWW-pages, they're quite boring actually, but I have got some sound samples. They're just .au 8 khz but that was my only choice. The songs are (1-2 min each): Learning To Live, La Villa Strangiato and Starless, (my favourite songs of all time). I've also got the entire track (oh this one's a killer) BURN by Deep Purple.

    the address is: http://www.nada.kth.se/~d94-mry

look for sound samples or something like that! If anyone else has got some cool songs please tell me!

    Take care!

    /Mats

Hey- Am I the only one who likes Voices? It is far and away my favorite song on the album, being at once progressive, interesting, moving, and powerful. It might even end up being my fave DT song.

    Just my $.02.

Someone mentioned that their friend said the static was poor sampling. I don't agree with that, and on my headphones I noticed that the static plays on the right side and then the left side and alternates. But I don't know why they put it there along with that annoying high pitch. I've learned to ignore it.

I like the sample with the guy talking about loving a woman, etc, but the 180 degrees, dry heat, etc is a bit much during the beautiful piano playing, in my opinion.

If I remember correctly the Japan and Germany versions are identical except for one song. The German version has Surrounded while the Japanese version replaces Surrounded with Another Day. I think that's it.

Mike P - I agree 100%. My first listen to Promised Land left me feeling pretty disappointed - AND made me realize that Dream Theater is well on the way to becoming the standard by which all other prgressive bands are measured (at least IMHO). Deb H hansond@mail.firn.edu

I have LatM and mine says Made in England. Are there any bonus tracks on the other ones? What are the tracks? The list on the England cd are as follows: 1. Metropolis 2. A Fortune in Lies 3. Bombay Vindaloo 4. Surrounded 5. Another Hand - The Killing Hand 6. Pull Me Under

I've also seen another import cd from DT. I don't remember the name but there was one song that I haven't heard of on it. i didn't get it because they were selling it for about $50.

An "out to lunch" block with Dream Theater just came on on KUPD 98 in Phoenix... four songs in a row. So far they have played Lie, Pull Me Under (live version! from the LATM promo CD), and Another Day. It's in the middle of AD right now. Oddly enough, it's been weeks since I requested an out-to-lunch with DT, so I guess they just let more requests build up... whoever else on Ytsejam has been calling KUPD.. good going!

I'm tryin'! I've edited the FAQ weekly as oflate, and I am still missing a TON of info in addition to not having time to edit misteaks. Don't trust the FAQ if it's more than a week out of date, says I, and I will have new versions of it here soon (or someone on the La Villa BBS can download it and bring it over)

I can hear it when almost any CRT is on, though some are a lot louder than others. I'm sitting in a military computer room right now and my ears are flipping out. I would guess it's there because it's actually a high quality sample, not a low quality one. Whatever recoreder was used to record that sample has better range than most recording equipment. I just wish they'd used a quieter TV! IT also could have been left there because the band wanted to see who can actually hear the thing. Either that or none of them or their staff can hear it so they have no idea it's there. Your guess is as good as mine. > > -- End of excerpt from Pat Daugherty <pdaugher@bdmserver.mcl.bdm.com>

I would like to echo Jason's sentiments. I'm going to be at that same show (any other Ytsejammers who are going to be there - e-mail me and we'll all get together, or tell me if something's already planned!) and I don't want to know about it ahead of time. Oh, and if any of you know how to get to Hammerjack's from, say 495, e-mail me. > > -- End of excerpt from hartman larry <lhartm1@gl.umbc.edu>

Welcome to all of our new subscribers, and lurkers who are posting. :-) BTW: If any of you are near Phoenix, Arizona, send me e-mail. I'm going to be there in about 2 weeks, I think. Also, to our German 'jammers: I'm going to be _there_ in abou a month or so, if all goes as planned, so if any of you are near SW Germany, send me e-mail. Lastly, if any of you are near Pensacola, FL - you know what to do. (I'm there now - business travel is a good thing :-)) Sorry for the non-DT content at the end here.
