The rest of the FW tour dates from Metal Blade are all tentative now that
it is a double bill starting in St. Louis...

If any Ytsejammers want to get together before the show let me know via email.

Don't reply to this message but send mail to: pdaugher@bdmserver.mcl.bdm.com

I would have sent this message form that address, but at this momment I cannot get to that address.

98 rock here in Baltimore is giving away tickets to the DT show, even though I have not heard them mention the new album or play one track from it. Actually, they haven't been playing any DT lately.

    Send me email Baltimore Ytsejammers!

William Wright asked about I Mother Earth ("Are they progressive like Dream Theater? Or what?"). I guess you could call them progressive: they definitely display excellent musicianship and long, complex songs. They are heavier than DT, but not really heavy enough to be called "metal". Whatever you want to call them, they are a great band (and they're Canadian! Bonus!!)

    I just turned on the Fox(103.3, Buffalo), a station that has been sucking lately by playing NOTHING but Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and STP. To my suprise...Caught In A Web was on. It was a one hour interview w/ John P. The DJ played CiaW and announced it as 'the next single' then went on to ask some rather dumb questions like;

'what's it like to [blah, blah]' 'do you like doing this kind of [blah, blah]

nothing important was revealed - hence: DUMB QUESTIONS

Anyway, I just caught the end of the program -heard CiaW, PMU, and Another Day

Anyone else from the Buffalo area catch this show? Maybe I missed alot of important stuff...

it was on 103.3 Thurs at 11:00 pm - midnight

    Phil,

BTW:right after the show ended, they *OF COURSE* went right back into Interstate Love Affair-STP yuk!

Hi, Anybody got the 'Nativity in Black - A Tribute to Black Sabbath' album? The US version seems to have been available for a while here in Japan. I waited for the Japanese version, it has a great cover, the CD case and everything has no transparent plastic, its all black with the title in silver on the front. Anyway, the DT link is that there are a whole load of quotes about how BS was the world's greatest band etc (quite a few of them very funny esp. Richie Kotzen's). The relevant quote is from Mike Portnoy: "I think Sabbath's impact on the metal world is pretty obvious. If there was no Black Sabbath, every band out there would sound like Blind Melon. They were the heaviest of the heavy and the entire metal world owes them a debt of gratitude." Obligatory sniggering.

    Martin.

P.S. Its great to hear a load of these songs decently recorded for once, pity Ozzy couldn't guest appear on all songs.

Here's what I hear (Applegate being a man's voice, Mary Jane being female):

Applegate: Six o'clock on a Christmas morning and for what? Mary Jane: Well isn't it for the honour of God, Applegate? Applegate: I know all about the honour of God, Mary Jane!

I faintly recall a character by the name of Applegate in a Victorian (Edwardian?) novel. Dickens? I'll look it up tomorrow.

Just a warning... this message is a spoiler for the Providence show. I am skipping lines before and after this message. Please bypass this message if you don't want to see the spoiler...

    SPOILER STARTS HERE:

Well, just got back from the Providence show... First off, we don't have any worries with the new keyboard player!!! He certainly can play with the guys... There were a _few_ mistakes, but that also can be expected on the first show of the tour.

Next, here is the set-list, as I remember:

Pull Me Under 6:00 Innocent Faded Take The Time (with extended instrumental) Caught In A Web w/ drum solo Lifting Shadows Off A Dream The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun Mirror Lie Another Day A Mind Besides Itself (entire trilogy)

    Encore: Metropolis

First off, we all sorta knew that they would be doing TOWHTSTS from the IRC, but at the show, b/c we were there so early, we sorta heard them do it in a soundcheck... It was funny looking around during TOWHTSTS seeing NOBODY else with a clue as to what it was... People looked at me even more strangly when I yelled for A Change Of Seasons a few times... :)

I was almost surprised to hear PMU b/c one of the person in our group told us that James said on a radio broadcast before the show that they would not be doing PMU... but they got it out of hte way quickly...

Most songs sounded incredible... They had just about all of the sample queued on time, but a few were slightly off, and the first ones in 6:00 were quite distorted, but they had the sound worked out by the end of the show.

Let's see... Metropolis for the encore was pretty much the same as on the I&W tour... they played the CD at the beginning before entering.

Hmm... I'm sorta tired, so not really thinking straigh... I will probably post more tomorrow...

I was able to get a camera into the show, and got 14 or 15 pictures with one of those panoramic disposable Kodak cameras, so hopefully they turn out ok, and even more importantly, hopefully I can find a color scanner somewhere... :) I though I was dead during the show, b/c a guard pointed in my direction after I had finished taking a picture, and they came over and confiscated a camera from the person standing 2 people over from me...

I think that we were able to get a tape of the show, which I should hopefully have TOMORROW before the Berklee show.

What else... The get together was cool... nice finally putting some faces to the names...

Oh... IME... what to say... I was not at all familiar w/ them, so I didn't enjoy them at all... I especailly hated when people started moshing.... but it was even WORSE when they started moshing to DT!!! I am really glad that Berklee has seats, so there will not be any moshing... One asshole in the croud started a fight with a guard, and 3 or 4 other guards came in, and basically beat the shit out of him b/c he kept on resisting... The only good to come out of that was I was able to get even closer to the stage... At the beginning, I was about 5 people back, but right in front of the speakers... After that, I went next to Tim Lodge 3 people back center stage (I got pictures from both locations...)

Anyway, I will write more tomorrow, but I need some sleep... Have another show to goto tomorrow... :)

One final thing was I didnt' get to meet the guys... I was too tired, so I left early b/c I had to drive back alone... Hopefully tomorrow will be different...

I am right there with "toscano" who wrote about Voices being possibly his favorite song on Awake. I initially liked SDV and Caught in a Web but then I started to listen to Voices more and I love it. Everything in the song works. It is powerful and dramatic. I love the slow tempo in the beginning and the middle and then how it works right into Silent Man. I also love the part where James sings "I am just Cassandra fleeting" That is too cool!

I have only listened to the CD about 40 times so I can't say what I will like the best after my 100th listen.

Well, I can't wait for the Denver show if Ticket Ripoff ever sends me my tickets.

By the way, does anyone know if and where Fates Warning is playing. I could dig seeing them.

    Pete

One quick thing about the tour dates just posted...

Most of them match the ones on the back of the concert t-shirts, but there are a few additional ones on the list that are not on the t-shirt (Lubbock, Albuquerke (sp), Colorado City, Boise, Sacremento). The biggest possible problem, however is that the t-shirt lists Seattle as being on the 28th, and the list piosted says the 27th. (They also list Los Angeles for the one listed as Hollywood, but that's no biggie)

Anyway, I'll post more of a review from the concert latrer on today...

THIS MESSGE CONTAINS MORE SPOILERS ON THE PROVIDENCE SHOW. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE SPOILERS, SKIP THIS MESSAGE. SPOILERS START ON THE NEXT SCREEN

Let's see... I am now more AWAKE (pun intended :) so I can comment more on the show... First off, TOWHTSTS sounded good, but it has been too long since I last listened to WDADU so I really forgot most of the lyrics except for the chorus...

The new keyboard player (Derick) is quite good, and fit in well... He was about in the same place that Kevin was always in... He was slightly to the back, but that was probably more related to the size of the stage than to him... They had all of their stacks/speakers on each side of the stage, so in order to make sure that he could be seen from all locations, he had to be back farther...

At times, the sound did sound a little messed up, but it was fixed after the 1st few songs... I though that the mix was really good also... I could really hear the bass and the keys... At some times, Petrucci was a little louder in the mix, but at no times could you not hear the bass and keys b/c of it. Also, there were some spots in some songs that I was SURE were guitar portions that were done on the keys... And of thankfully, Derick was able to keep up with all of them... Derick's stage presence was about the same as Kevin's... he looked like he was having fun... but it is sorta difficult to have much of a presence when you have to stay in the same place behind the keys... About the only thing that looked comopletely different in his setup was that where Kevin had 2 keyboards in front of him and one to the side, Derick had all 3 on top of each other... He realyl did well, and I am quite impressed with his performance, especially for how long he has been working... He fit right in on Take The Time...

I was dissapointed that they didn;t do Scarred and Learning To Live... I would have rather heard them even instead of Take The Time and even Pull Me Under... although PMU makes a great opener and is great to get the crowd worked up...

Mike's solo didn't change too much from the one from the 2nd portion of the last tour... There were no other pure solos in the show and the only instumental that they did was Erotomania.

Another Day was very reminicent of the last tour... I think that they might keep AD and Metropolis for every tour as long as they are together... They both seem to get the best reaction from the crowd... Almost like Limelight, Tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio for Rush...

Hmm... what else to say... John and John are incredible... I was again amazed to see some of the work that Myung does on Metropolis and in the MBI trilogy... Absolutly incredible...

On to more stuff, they actually had a decent selection of t-shirts for the concert. The one that I got last night was the Awake cover w/ tour dates on the back. It was $23. They had a long sleeve one with a clock with roman numerals with an eye as the background for the clock. It didn;'t have any hands on it (that I could see) although Mike's bass drums had the same picture on it with the clock reading 6:00. It was $30 I think... They had one other that I don't remember. All shirts were black. They also had a while hat with the Majesty symbol on it.

I was also able to get a free poster of the band picture from Awake (the one with them all in the studio) when I walked in... They had us wait outside of the standing area while doing soundchecks, so I conviently helped them clean up the club byy helping myself to one from the wall when a guard walked away... :)

Well, it has been a LONG post, and there will probably also be a few more reviews from Providence today, plus I will have more to add tonight and tomorrow if I get a copy of last night's show tonight so I guess that that's about it for now...

Oh, the set was almost 2 full hours, but I was pissed off b/c DT didn't even start until AFTER 11:00... which is why I had to leave w/o getting to meet the band...

I know it should have been ten reasons, but this is DT we're talking about! Ten reasons is just not enough to do justice to Awake.

I am really starting to like this song a lot more. They could've switched this one with Under a Glass Moon being on Awake. Very IAW-ish. Very typical DT. > Also, is it just me, or does the last chord in IF sound as if it could be > held over to the beginning of Erotomania?

Yeah... it does go together well. > Steve Fuller
