Greetings, fellow Ytse Jammers. I'm new to this list and thought I'd
introduce myself. I've been a fan of Dream Theater since I bought WD&DU
from some record club. I figured they were just another band that I liked
that produced one album and disappeared. A few years later a friend of mine
told me about an album she'd been listening to that she just LOVED. I was
surprised to learn that it was Dream Theater: I&W. As soon as I could I bought
the album. Even better than WD&DU! I was of course, hooked.

I'm a Fates Warning fan, too. I first borrowed Awaken the Guardian and Spectre
Within from a friend. I remember staying up all night just trying to decipher
everything. And like others of you out there, it was the fantastic covers that
hooked me. After a few listenings, I could finally make out that someone was
actually singing! <gryn> I have yet to find Night on Brocken, and I guess I
need to pick up the newest one. What was it? Inside Out?

I'm really happy to be on this list. It's good to know I'm not the only one
who LOVES Dream Theater! I agree with one other person who said that I&W is
better than Awake. It's still a great album, but I just like I&W better. I
thank everyone for the information about the new Queensryche album. I'll wait
till I can buy it used somewhere.

One last thing. Has anyone ever heard of Crimson Glory? Or Warrior?

SPOILER - MY THOUGHTS ON PROVIDENCE SHOW 10/20/94

    OK HERE GOES:

    Dream Theater
    at the STRAND
    Providence, R.I.
    10/20/94

Overall, this show was was completely incredible. I mother Earth came
on stage at around 9:45 or so and played till 10:30pm. The crowd
seemed to be into their music, but I wasn't all too impressed. the coolest
thing about them was this older guy they had playing auxillary percussion.
Anyways, so finally at 11:00pm. Dream Theater came on stage!

They opened up with Pull Me Under. It seemed like the first 30 seconds
of the intro to PMU was being played pre-recorded and the whole band
came in after the 30 second intro. The first thing that struck me was
the keyboard player. His name is Derek Sheridian and he has dark
brown (almost black) color hair...and its a "neat" short hairstyle.
He doesn't quite look as if he fits in totally, but his playing totally
    kicked ASS......

DT Played all the tunes from AWAKE except for SDV (of course), and Scarred.
8( I was looking forward to them closing with Scarred..oh well. I can
    deal with Metropolis!.

Its true when they played "The Ones who help to set the sun", no one knew
what the hell it was! Even the damn moshers took a break on this one. It
sounded incredible with Labrie singing it. MUCH better than the Dominicci
    version.

A Mind beside itself was mind-boggling. Petrucci was AMAZING on Eroto,
Voices was flawless, and for the Silent man Labrie and PEtrucci had
the acoustic setup in the front of the stage with chairs and all.
Mike Portnoy even had a small bongo setup in the front along with
using skakers, etc, on "The Silent Man".

The closer Metropolis was incredible as well. I was waiting and waiting for the
keyboard solo after the bass solo...and when it came..i seriously had
to question if this new keyboard player was actually playing or
"milli-vanilli"'ing it...because HE HIT EVERY NOTE WITH PERFECT ACCURACY.
If you didn't know it, you'd think kevin was up there.

All in all, this show was just beyond words. A great beginning to what
    will be an INCREDIBLE tour.........

Oh and after the show, my roomate and I waited on the side of the club
with about 15 other people. Finally at 1:50AM, Petrucci camer out and signed
some autographs and we got to talk with him, etc. I was in the front, So
I was the first to greet the God, I mean Mr. Petrucci...He was incredibly
friendly to all of us. I even got my picture taken with him. I can't
wait to blow it up to an 8x10!!!! I was even talking to his wife
Rena....and not knowing what to say ..i was just like
"you're married to a god"..(duh stupid me)..but then Petrucci jumped in
with "Yup, and I'm married to a Goddess!". 8)
Rena and I discussed the break up of Meanstreak (her band) and a mutual friend
she and I have. It went really well. John P. signed my copy of AWAKE.
Someone asked him about Kevin Leaving the band in relation to what
kind of music Kevin in into...

    Someone mentioned Tori Amos like
" So he wants to move into a different kind of music..like Tori Amos, etc?"

John Petrucci - "Yes, I think he wants to Marry Tori Amos".

I thought this comment was amusing.

Anyways after all of this Petrucci and the Mrs. left ....and so did
    my roomate and I.....

    GREAT SHOW!

    Tim

Here's my contribution to the discussion about the sample at the
beginning of 6:00...I can clearly hear it as:
"-Six o'clock on a Christmas morning. [repeated 4 times] And for what?
-Well isn't it for the honour of God, Aunt Kate?
-I know all about the honour of God, Mary Jane."
    Anybody else agree?

I won't venture as to how the quote fits with the theme, but the quotes from
6:00 are from the James Joyce short story 'The Dead'- well actually I guess
they are from the movie with Angelica Huston.

I don't have the movie, but here's how it goes in the book:
"No, " continued Aunt Kate, " She wouldn't be said or led by anyone,
slaving there in that choir day and night, night and day. Six o'clock on
Christmas morning! And all for what?"
"Well, isn't it for the honour of God, Aunt Kate?" asked Mary Jane...
"I know all about the honour of God, Mary Jane...."

They are discussing children in the choir, and how younger children are
preferred over older children for singing duties.

Anyway, I seem to remember the gist of "The Dead" was that a woman's first
love died when they were young, but he is still forever in her heart. No love
after will ever be the same.

I know that in Pittsburgh, Joey Vera is NOT opening for FW. He was supposed to
, but for some reason, he isn't. A band called Planet Hate is now the opening
band. Is this true for anyone else?

For anyone in the Pittsburgh area: I'm giving 6 pairs of FW tickets away on my
radio show. 2 pairs each Sunday night (10/23, 10/30, 11/6) Listen to win
them. The show is on from 9p - 11p.

Whoever mentioned the dialog in 6:00 as being between a man and a woman, I
think is mistaken. I'm almost certain this is between two women (possibly
nuns). The woman who says "I know all about the honour of God Mary Jane" is
definitely older, but a woman, nonetheless.

    Hi All,

Well, we all know about the infamous Nuclear Assault t-shirt that James is
wearing in the PMU video. Well I was looking through a recent issue of the
Columbia House music Bulletin and they had the new album by Nuclear Assault.
But they also had a picture of the band. Now if you look closely at one of
the guys in the forefront of the picture you will see the familair burning
heart. YES the dude has a DT shirt on! This must have been planned right?
*grin* Just thought I would let everyone know.

See everyone at the Milwaukee show.

Not really any spoilers here, so anyone can keep reading...

I just got back from the Boston show, this time MUCH earlier than
yesterday... Set list was the same as yesterday, and the mix sounded
about the same... Not any noticable mistakes other than James
announcing the wrong name for a song (he joked after saying the wrong
name about this being the 2nd night of the tour.)

This time, there were seats, so thankfully no moshing. My official
seats were in the 6th row, but I walked up front for the show, and
still managed to get alot of pictures from the show. I was about 3
feet from the stacks, and I have never quite said this before, but my
eyes were vibrating from all of the bass. Also, Petrucci stared at me
2 times for about 5 secs, giving his little growl at the end... :)

When I arrived, I was there and I ended up talking with a few people
there... A few had NO idea about Kevin leaving... Some people were
quite shocked. I met a few cool people, and a few there actually had
some boots... One even knew what ACOS was... Also, during the show,
I was not the first one to start screaming out A Change Of Seasons at
the top of my lungs during some of the quiet breaks... James didn't
even say anything when we yelled for it...

James turned the mic over to Mike at one point and Mike talked about
their experience at Berklee... Also, James said that Derick went to
Berklee also, so that should give an idea of his calaber.

James also mentioned that Caught In A Web was going to be their next
single, and is to be released sometime in the first week of November.
James also said that they WILL BE ON HBB TOMORROW, so it is confirmed
at last. (I guess that they will be on from New Haven)

I also met with Kaoru and got a copy of the Japanese version of
Awake... I am listening to Eve as I type, and it sounds good...
There are some slight differences from the version from the last
tour... most probably apparent since it is recorded in the studio...
Also, I noticed that it is different from the version of Eve that they
play after the encore while everyone is leaving (I saw the SB on the
way out today, and they play Eve from a DAT there). It is funny some
of the minor differences between the 2 versions of Awake... First
off, the black on the cover photo is darker than the black on the
American version. Also, the case itself has a little additional
holder on the end to keep the liner in place that the American case
doesn't have. Other than that, they are basically the same except
that the liner actually folds slightly differnt... As mentioned
before, the Japanese version has an extra insert with stuff writtin in
Japanese. The Japanese CD is also a differnt color... Instead of
being a black, it is a light color...

Not much else differnt... Again, I am in awe... especially after
seeing Myung playing some of the more bass oriented portions of
    several songs...

I am now looking forward to getting my pictures developed and getting
copies of the 2 shows from Chris... Hopefully I'll have them soon...

Hey DT fans, here's a quick rundown of the DT Berklee show.. This is a SPOILER -- do not read below if you don't want to find out the details of the latest tour ahead of time!!! Near the bottom the spoiler ends and there's some stuff which may be of interest to you relating to conversations I had and overheard with the guys in DT....

    skipped lines...

Ok here goes: The set list was exactly the same (and in the same order) as the one posted by Mike Burstin on the last digest. I was psyched to hear TOWHTSTS with LaBrie on vocals. The keyboardist seemed a little nervous at first, but he held pace with the rest of the group -- I was impressed at the perfect execution of Metropolis. You have to keep in mind that he didn't write or come up with any of the solos and keyboard lines. It's harder to play someone else's style!! He also hasn't had much time to learn it all.. All in all, I was very impressed with his performance. (We'll have to wait to see if he can contribute on a scale similar to Kevin in the songwriting mode). La Brie sounded INCREDIBLE -- I've never heard him sound so good in concert.. His voice never seemed to get tired, he hit all the high parts in IF with ease... AMBI was absoultely amazing.. Worth the $18.50 just for that!! Portnoy and Petrucci were polished and clean as ever.. The mix was pretty good, and all the important parts and solos came through for all instruments.. The stage positioning was the same as the last tour. I, too, was dissapointed about missing Scarred and LTL, as well as UaGM... But all in all the show was amazing. Also, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that anyone attending a DT show hang out afterwards in the general vicinity of their tour bus... Within 1 1/2 hours I had met all five of the band members and gotten all of their autographs on my ticket. They are all great guys. And please give the keyboardist some encouragment - he's doing great, considering... Oh, the keyboardist's name is Derek S------? (can't read his signature). He is another Berklee guy, I think he graduated in '83. I was not very impressed with I Mother Earth. The percussionists and bassist were good. The singer is a Henry Rollins rip-off and the guitarist left much to be desired.. His tone was awful, it always sounded like he had a wah depressed to the super-trebly state!! They were different, but not all that progressive and very different from DT.. More below...

    END OF SPOILER!!!

Some more info: All ytsejammers: hang out after the show -- you WILL meet the band!!! this was my first contact and I am still riled up about it=)!

LaBrie said after the show that CIAW is their next single. Video plans have not been made yet, but they probably will eventually. Also, James and Mike will be on HBB tonight (10/22)!!!

Myung is a lot shorter than one would think. He is also very quiet. Some asked him if he would ever consider going back to Berklee to take classes, and he said it would be cool..

Portnoy seemed bitter about Kevin's departure. consider: Someone asked him where Kevin was. Portnoy said somewhere in (New?) Mexico. Then, someone jokingly asked "is he available?" -- to this Portnoy responded somewhat sarcasticly: "Maybe for 9 Inch Nails!!" I think this is proof that Portnoy, at least, is somewhat bitter about Kevin... I asked Portnoy about "Eve," and whether it would be released in the US. He said that they have recorded Eve, To Live Forever, and a demo version of Take the Time and that any of them could pop up on a B-side, or a "movie soundtrack" (?????). Also, he said the European single for "Lie" has "To Live Forever" on the b-side...

I asked Petrucci if they were going to come back to the East Coast on their tour once they meet up with FW, but he said they weren't (damn!!).

Derek seemed like a really nice guy. People complemented his playing, and he responded (paraphrased): "I think it's going really well -- we have some details to iron out and some things to work on, but I'm happy with how it went." Or something very much like that.

Well, that's about all for now. Hope I didn't bore anybody! One final word: DON'T MISS THIS SHOW!! =)

Awake is 9th on the Finnish album chart. Queensryche is #5. Only R.E.M and Wet Wet Wet (who I think should shut up up up) along with Bon Jovi and Ice MC (Ice who?) beat QR. Above DT are also Slayer and Eric Clapton (only on the charts, that is).

They're not getting any radio play, since there are not so many radio stations in Finland, and they all only play this folk and 70's rock stuff (sometimes they go wild and play some 2Unlimited or some other "cool" dancetechnohiphop stuff). You lucky bastards in the USA. I can't even get any DT posters or stickers or other neat stuff here! :(
