    Hello fellow DT fans...

1st off...I don't have an MPEG player...is there one out there for UNIX
that I can compile? Where would I get it.

2nd...I've been trying to ftp lie2.wav from css.net but it kills me off
after 10 minutes of inactivity...since when is a file transfer counted
as inactive? Anybody know another site I can get it from. I can play
.wav files in Ultimedia/6000, are there .wav versions for SDV and Erotomania
    anywhere...?

I'm really chomping at the bit now...I must hear some new DT!

    Later!

    Greg.

I'm assuming that what he (or she?!?!? let us know, Kaoru!!!! :) meant was
if you could play an 8-cm CD on a regular ol' CD player. (Well, that's
the question I'm interested in having an answered, at any rate.)

It's kind of important to me, since it will pretty much determine whether
I go for this deal or not.

I also have another question about "Eve": Is it an instrumental? On the
live versions that I'm sure some of you must have, are drums included or
is it just a keyboard instrumental?

    Thanks for any info.

Sorry to be posting this here, but this is the easiest way... I am
now back in school, but still trying to get everything setup... If
you send email to me, I'll read it, and try to get back to you, but I
can't be sure as to how soon...

Also, some news everyone probably wants to hear... I am getting a
promo copy of Awake, and the person said that it is fine for me to
copy for whoever wants it... Please remember, as I said above, I am
still busy with moving in, etc... but I will have a copy soon (as
soon as my parents can forward it up to me at school...)

    Hi,

in the german magazine "rock hard", Mike Portnoy states that the recordings for I&W would hjave been an absolutely nightmare. (if i can translate it like that....) "We never said anything about that, because we didnt want to get troubles, but Prater felt like a dictator and wanted to change everything and make everything easier. Then He triggert my drums (replacing natural drumsounds by digitized from a computerdisc, editor) what i absolutely hate and didnt even let me in the studio to work with him on the sounds. what a nightmare!

(Dunno if this was know round here...)

Furthermore he comments on awake, i will try to translate the sense of what he says.....

Scarred - the first song we wrote for awake, could be compared to metropolis or LtL.

CiaW - very heavy and totally groove-orientated. John plays a 7 string guitar which has an extra bass-side, so the basic note is a deep B. (sorry...my humblin english and my short time........) Apart from the chorus-breaks i constantly play doublebassdrums. this song forces you to bang your head.....

Innocence Faded - some kind of mixture of another day and TTT - a bit happier and more commercial, a bit like rush one could say. Though sounding more simple, it was for me as the drummer one of the most difficultest studio works....

6 o clock - is driven by very heavy keys. kevin uses a jon-lord-on-acid hammond.sound. If i play that one live, i really need a bottle of oxygene afterwards....

the mirror/lie - surely the heaviest we ever wrote. despite the panter/helmet/sepulture-vibes we somehow managed to get some keyboards in there....(laughing)

Space Dye Vest - when kevin played us the demo, we were right blown! Space cannot be compared to any of our recent songs - maybe just because its not a number we all worked out together. reminds to roger waters and pink floyd.....

Erotomania, Voices, the silent man - a trilogy with musically very different parts, but all with a basic music theme. ero is an instrumental in the style of ytsejam: 6 minutes of pure crazyness. .......

runnin out of time....but there doesnt seem to be anything really new. hope it helped you anyway however....bye Freak

    *SIDEBAR*

When Houston's Galactic Cowboys signed with Geffen Records, it looked like they had reached the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Two albums later, the Cowboys were dropped from the label without a pot to piss in. Still together, back in Houston, and looking to put their career back on track, the Galactic Cowboys told a gathering of the Houston Music Council that signing with a record label is not an end in itself. "A record deal is not all it's cooked up to be. Signing is just the beginning," Cowboys' guitarist Dane Sonnier explains. The group was signed by Gary Gersh, Geffen's top A&R person in 1991. When the Cowboys arrived at the label's Los Angeles headquarters, they found Gersh had put together a team of four people, including himself, to plan how to market the band. "When a new band is signed, there are always people assigned to get the ball rolling," says Sonnier. "At first, everybody wanted to get our record on the radio. Then there was the idea of doing a video on MTV. But it didn't happen that way." Partly, it was timing. The Cowboys' first album was held back almost a year because label executives didn't want the new release to interfere with their efforts to push Guns 'n' Roses. Finally it was the Cowboys' turn. Nirvana came out at the same time. Expected to be a college band, Nirvana sold four million copies. Suddenly every label wanted grunge. "It's easy for people at the corporate level to get sidetracked," says Sonnier. "We were told at DGC (the Geffen subsidiary label) that the word was patience. We were always being assured that it would take a couple of albums, the right tours to build a fan base. Every time we had a setback, it seemed someone at the label was ready to take charge with a new plan. We kept feeling like it was just a matter of time until we achieved the next level." What was happening, however, was that one by one, the original team Gersh put together was leaving the label. The Cowboys' label support network was dissolving. As label support evaporated, nobody was directing money and promotion into the Cowboys. "First it was the vice-president of DGC, our actual label. Then the guy in charge of radio promotions. Then Gary disappeared to reappear as the president of Capitol Records. Suddenly the people who liked our music were gone," says Sonnier. Maybe the band was naive, but there was no sense of panic. "There were ten bands on the label at the time so we didn't figure we'd be cut," explains Sonnier. "At labels like Atlantic and Elektra, they handle forty groups at a time. They add and cut groups every month. "At Geffen, they had Guns 'n' Roses and White Zombie who had done albums a year before they were released. We figured Geffen had hung tough with them, they'd be hang tough with us." In early 1993, the band recorded their second album. Their relationship with manager Sam Taylor dissolved. The band signed with Any Gold of Concrete Management. The New York company also handles Pantera and White Zombie. The band cut a costly video ("way up in the five figures") to penetrate MTV. The video was slotted to "Headbangers' Ball" and never broke into regular rotation. Maybe the video symbolized the band's label problems. "I don't think they really ever figured out if we were metal, pop, rock, or what," says Sonnier. The band ended a tour with Dream Theater last summer and was supposed to hook up in Florida for a tour with Jackyl. Suddenly they got word from Geffen that the tour was cancelled. "We looked around and there wasn't anyone at the label who was pushing for us. It just went month to month with us hanging. There was an option clause in our contract that was approaching. The people at Geffen contacted Andy [Gould] and said they weren't interested in pursuing relations any further." Before signing, Sonnier tells musicians to look at the quality of people at the label. "It's a business to them," says Sonnier. "Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions: what bands have they worked with before, how do they work their tours, what venues do they put their bands in, what do they put into videos." Financial reward after two major label releases? None! "A lot of money goes into an album, hotel rooms, video costs, accountants, lawyers...by the time it got down to us, there was nothing left. Remember, everyone gets a percentage," laughs Sonnier. The Galactic Cowboys have been back in Houston for a year. The group is shopping for a label once again, more carefully this time. "Our history could help or hurt us," says Sonnier. "If a label is looking at the money we didn't make, it could go against us. If they're looking at the two record albums we did and they like the music, it could go for us. "Whatever happens, we're not going to let any setback stop us. It hasn't changed our vision. "We're playing in town an writing songs. We've written enough material to fill four albums. We get tons of fan mail from all over the world. People want to know what's happening with us. "This time when we sign, it will be with better knowledge of how the music business works."

According to a very reliable source/friend of mine (I > don't like to speak for other people), this guy actually started his > career as a producer by accident. Hmmmm, well from what I have sounds I have heard on Edge of Thorns and Handfull of Rain I say he is a pretty damn good joke. I feel that both albums sound very well done. But then again, I am easily fooled. The only thing that I can complain about is the poor sound quality of Hall of the Mountain King, the first album of Savatage's he produced, but then again that was 87. Paul has produced the last 5 of there albums, I guess practice makes perfect. But to remove all doubts about his abilities, pick up Handful of Rain!!! It will stay in my CD player until I get Awake!!!

Does any one know of other productions Paul has done?

Through the grace of God and a few friends in the right places, I got a pre-release copy of AWAKE.... Needless to say, it blows I&W out of the water. The sound is so different, so much better. This is the Dream Theater I've been wishing for. It's very dark and heavy. Caught in a Web is probably one of the best on the album. This is a total guitar album: in Erotomania I swear to God it's Yngwie!!!! Fast John, yes, but appropriate?????

For those of you who are thinking, "COPY ME ONE!!!" I have to say this:

The copy I have is the copy of a copy of a copy, so the quality is not as great as it could be... Therefore, each time I recopy it, the copy I distribute will progressively( no pun intended) get worse... I think you all can wait until October....

The CD is called Live Images, and is on Living Legends (a German company, I think). Anyway, the disk is DoE from Metropolis through Killing Hand (no COS, WFS or LTL)

Also, they had another CD called Dance Of Eternity, which is a single disc, I think from the Buffalo Impaxx radio broadcast (same as DoL). Just wanted to leave a quick warning...

I've been hearing about this Dt sticker that is supposed to be in the issue of Guitar World with the Rolling Stones on the cover. I finally saw one today at school but it was all wrapped in plastic so I couldn't check to see if it had the sticker (I would have opened it but someone from the store was standing really close). It had some kinda "Special Eagles Book" inside with the shrink wrap. So I took a chance and spent the $3.50 for the mag (which left me with about $1 and some change to get lunch with) and I got out of the store and tore into it and went cover to cover and there was no DT sticker to be found!!!!

Has anyone found it in the newsstand editions? Does it only come in the subscription issues? Where exactly is it? Is it loose or attached to a page or a cardboard insert or something?

Please help me to locate AT LEAST one of these!!!

    Thanks!
