Some information on the Italian Prog Band called:

    BLACK JESTER

    line up: Alex D'Este (vocals)
             Paolo Viani (guitar)
             Gil Teso (bass)
             Alberto Masiero (drums)
             Nico Odorico (keyboards)

1986: They start (the band is based in TREVISO, a city in
the North of Italy. Also from Treviso are ASGARD, another
          progressive band, sounds like MARILLION)
1990: THE OPERA (first demo) with a different formation.
1991: New and actual line-up with Alberto and Nico
1992: Debut CD "DIARY OF A BLIND ANGEL" for the Dutch-label WMMS
1994: New CD "WELCOME TO THE MOONLIGHT CIRCUS" and some prog
festival in Germany with IVANHOE and GLENMORE.

They're really a great band, but their problem is to be Italians.
Nobody seems interested in the Italian scene...
Also ASGARD are really a great band, they sound really like
    Marillion.
If you find in your local music shop their CD, buy them! I'm
    sure you'll like them.

I have been reluctant to post this in the past but Jeremy Peter Lakatos has given me some inspiration. I have been reluctant because I did not want to start a big controversy but I'm the one who opened the "LIE is gay" can of worms. :) (Sorry folks - but it has been an amusing circus to observe - the big "conservatives vs. liberals" thing is just beyond my comprehension - I don't subscribe to that black and white polarized philosophy.) Anyway, on to my post...

I've always felt that WD&DU is a better album overall than I&W. There are no weak songs on it! Sure, I&W has better production and some of the best DT songs are included on I&W but as a whole album, I feel that WD&DU is more effective. Of course I am biased because WD&DU was my first exposure to DT. Well, I can't wait to here all of Awake! Later, Jay Peele (INFERNO) jpeele@unf6.cis.unf.edu

Well, now it's finally my turn. I got my tape yesterday (1,000,000 thanks Tim!!!) and listened only six times throughout the day. I would've listened more, but I had a test! My favorite songs so far are the ones that everyone else has bashed! I think I just need to warm up to the rest of the songs. 6:00 was addictive from the beginning...killer way to start the album! I really like Caught In A Web, but wished they would have stuck a little closer to the demo! Innocence faded is VERY radio worthy, which a lot of people don't want to hear. I love it, though! I need to listen to Erotomania and Voices A LOT more! I didn't become attached to them as of yet. I REALLY like Silent Man...it's like nothing they've done before. I can't believe that another band member adds vocals!!! Yea! I hope they can pull that off live! I love the way Mirror and Lie run together! Yes, yes, yes I was one of the ones that bashed Lie from radio airplay....SORRY!!! It's really growing on me, and I really like it now. The extended "outro" kicks ass!!!!! I love it. I think Lifting Shadows Off a Dream is absolutely beautiful! What a great sounding chorus! I really like this song (Surrounded is also my favorite on I&W). I'm still warming up to Scarred and Space-Dye Vest is like nothing I've ever heard before! What a versitile song! Overall, I think the samples were a bit much... there's way too many IMHO. I wish the keys were a little more apparent, but I guess that's representative of the timing, heh? Also, I wish people would stop trying to make parrallels with I&W...it seems useless. This album is so much different in style (I don't know if it's better or worse), but can we stop with the "Metropolisish, Surroundedish, etc". Bottom line: Awake is typical DT: IT KICKS ASS!!! -Adam

WDADU would've been better if it had better production... I'm a stickler for production and sound quality... but overall it is an excellent album, had more balls and contents then I&W... but I still think I&W is still the better one because it progresses to new heights...

Ahhh... MR. Zach... I HAVE SEEN a Dream Theater cover band... in fact, it is one of my friend's band... they do Surrounded, Pull Me Under, Metropolis and some others that I don't remember, and they play them regularly at parties... but they also are progressive nuts with ample experience and training in music...

same here.. yes, AFIL's solo KICKS ass. I got Marquee before WDADU and didn't really appricate it, but when I hear it on WDADU, it's up to speed (unlike Marquee, it seems slower) and it really kicks ass. That solo makes John shine above the rest.

Ken, or anyone who can answer: What's the deal with a digest not being set out every now and then. I'll pop into my mailbox and, for instance, 522 and 524 will be there - but not 523. Could this be a local problem? Is the digest software F*CKING things up? Hmm....

By the way, listened to AWAKE with my brother-in-law who has a degree in music comp. and he was beside himself over some of the rhythms on the CD. He's not easy to please and it blew him away.

    Rush Video Montage! Current Order Status - 22 September 1994 . . . . . . .

NOTICE!!!!!!! Current orders will be cut off as of NOW. The reason is that I am moving, and I will only be able to take my own SVHS VCR to my new dwelling. The other one belonged to my parents, and, as would be expected, they are going to be needing it in order to watch their OWN tapes! :) With only one VCR, I will be limited as far as video copies go. Hopefully, I can find a roomie who DOES have his/her own VCR, as the first roomie I know I will have, has none. It's a house rental, so one or two more people could conceivably come into the picture. Alas, even at best, I don't expect anyone who moves in to the rental house to have an SVHS deck, only a VHS.

It was originally going to be cutoff on 9/30/94 but the move will be happening sooner than expected. Also I got a huge rush of last-minute orders. I'm not sure if I can get it all done as it is. Doing my best...

    *** THANK YOU ***

I want to thank you all who put up with me on this project, who made it such a huge success. I hope you're all enjoying your original generations of the Rush video montage. I wonder if, ten years down the road, some newbie who I've decided seems like a pretty decent fellow, thus beginning to help him build his collection, will tell me excitedly about the video collection he got ahold of, and how fantastic it is, even though it's lost N generations. :)

To those who still want copies! Some copies went to Japan and other places where PAL conversion is possible. You might ask around if you need a PAL copy. For VHS copies, I authorize anyone and everyone to distribute the Rush Video Montage freely. All I ask is that you don't try and number/initial it yourself. I kept track of who has exactly what number, so that future references to the originality of the copy can be resolved. Simply put, the original generation is FINISHED. :(

I did the last MAIL stop >two< days ago, so by the time most of you read this, if your name is in the mailed list, you should HAVE your tape. Anyone who dosen't have it that is on the mailed list, contact me right away! (well, unless you're almost at the bottom, as those DID just get mailed, you might want to wait a few days.)

The 'taped' list is tapes I have recorded completely, each time I get a chance off from work or class, I drop by the post office to mail all of those. This is a minimum twice a week, so you know that your tape will go no longer than 3 days waiting to be mailed. These are ready to go, and will go out as soon as possible!

The 'current queue' means I cashed your check, bought your tape, and it's in the pile I currently have to record. Yes, I use your own money to buy the material. I run a profit margin of about 25 cents on these things, since it's mostly a favor for the Ytsejam list in the first place, so please don't get on me about money (some folks have!) it's not like I'm buying limos. I buy YOUR tapes with the money you sent, and your stamp, etc. Thus, if your check clears, it's in my current queue or else it's done.

I'd like to apologize to you all once again for how long it's taking me to get through all of these, I had no idea how many of you would want them, but they are getting done as fast as they can be. Please bear with me and be patient, I will try and minimize the wait as much as I can!

MAILED! Right up front, we want to apologize for this massive cross-posting. It is important to us that we reach as many of you as we can, since you are the people that we are creating this program for. However, we are sorry if some of you have to look at this more than once (special apologies to Lazlo Nibble and Dave Datta, who will each be seeing this around five or six times). With that out of the way, this is a:

    REQUEST FOR INFORMATION -----------------------

My friend David Tolliver and I, Forrest Norvell, are designing a music database system (which we've nicknamed "Trainspotter" ;). Our chief goals for the system are that it be very flexible and fast. If this doesn't sound very specific, it's because it isn't -- we're trying to get your input without giving you any preconceptions about what it is we're trying to do. What do we want from you? Simple -- information! What sort of features would you like to see in a program like this? What sort of information are you interested in tracking (about labels, groups and their members, releases and their tracks, and similar things)? Are there other music cataloging programs that you've used, and if you have, what have you liked and disliked about them? Are there special-purpose features that you've never seen implemented but would like to? In short, if you could create a dream program to keep track of your music collection, what would you want? Tell us! Send your suggestions to me at ogd@selway.umt.edu with the word "Trainspotter" in the subject line. PLEASE BE CAREFUL TO REPLY ONLY TO ME! We're imposing on the good graces of the net enough as it is, and we don't want to be responsible for a huge torrent of flames and counterflames. As you can tell from the huge number of addresses in the To: field, we are anticipating a large number of replies, so don't be upset if we don't get right back to you. However, if you do take the time to make a thoughtful reply, we will try our best to make sure that we get an equally thoughtful response back to you in a timely fashion.

Thank you VERY much for your time in advance, Forrest Norvell ogd@selway.umt.edu

Themes tend to reappear all over Awake... obviously SDV in a number of places... The Mirror and Lie interchange them a lot as well. Puppies on Acid showed up somewhere else on the album, but it was extremely subtle, and I'll be damned if I can remember where it was at... :/

If you're wanting speculations on The Mirror/Lie, mine is that it seems to be an interchange between an abuser who realizes what he is doing and the victim that doesn't exactly want to forgive him.

for some reason, there seems to be a lot of abuse issues in this new album... A Mind Beside Itself covers insanity. SDV has some hints about possessiveness and love rejected. Scarred displays the cynicism of someone whose trust was broken and begins to see something about his/her friends that are trying to help him/her.

#1: Someone posted something about somebody else singin at the end of SDV. I suppose it's John Petrucci, since I saw him doing backing-vocals on Caught In A Web (I think it was) from the Foundations Forum. He sang very well that small live-bit I heard, perfect backing-vox, not like Queensryche live-backing-vox, high weak out-of-key falsetto things.

#2: I don't think that WDADU was the greatest album, and I sure don't think that it's got the best songs overall. Some of them are some of the best but some other are the weakest.

    WEAK DT SONGS -------------

Status Seeker Light Fuse And Get Away Only A Matter Of Time

Those songs lack balls&chunk, have weak lyrics, are overall cheezy and I don't really think they're coherent.

    STRONG DT SONGS ---------------

A Fortune In Lies The Ytse Jam The Killing Hand Afterlife

The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun falls somewhere in between. IAM is much more coherent and accomplished, the only song that falls flat are Surrounded. Of course all this is IMO, still these 'weak' songs kick most other people's asses of course. I just like to state that those are songs that are weaker than the real killer-DT-trax: Learning To Live, Pull Me Under, The Killing Hand, Pup.

Also I think Lie is quite good, I suppose that makes me a real bonehead :-)

#3: I think I heard that during the Awake sessions some more songs were recorded. On was (To Live) Forever but I don't remember the other one. However it wasn't A Change Of Seasons, but they'd like to record it properly sometime soon. The extra-tracks will appear (have they already appeared?) on singles in the future. Looking forward to that...

#4: I think James handled Lie better live than most other live-stuff I have heard, Live In Tokyo must be the worst. (Aeeeeaeeeeeeeeeee) :-) Another thing: I have only heard the album-version of Lie through a Mac-speaker by downloading from the www-pages, and throughout the verses James almost exactly sounds like Axl Rose (O horrible thought!)

    Hope I bored you! :-)

I don't know about you, but I'm one pissed off DT fan. I live in Southern New Jersey(no jokes please!) and none of the local radio stations are playing Dream Theater. I have called and requested to hear the new album numerous times but to no avail. What's the deal with radio??? I listen to the rock stations, both commercial and college and no DT!?!?! Does anyone else have the same problem? Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't have the single or the album...I'm dyin'!! I'm going to keep on pestering these lame radio stations until they play what I want to hear! Any word on MTV? I read somewhere that the guys will be on Headbangers on October 1st to world premier the video for "Lie". Can anyone confirm??

My band also did a cover of "Pull Me Under" - and we played it for a while at a coupla parties Granted, it wasn't technically perfect, but you could recognize what song we were playing (just kidding).... Seriously, our version of "Pull Me Under" was pretty impressive and pretty accurate except for the fact that there were no keys...even spo, it was pretty damn OK..... :)

But I don't see many people covering this type of stuff at all, the thing that I see troubling many of the people would be the keys and the changing, complex time sigs....

HOWEVER, if you see anyone out there doing a DT tribute show :) please let me know, I'd be anxious to see if some other people can pull it off......:)

    whasup again, folx.....

I was just wondering - where the hell are people from the Ny metro. area? Am I like the only one on here? Maybe its just me...i dunno.....

Well, anyway, since everyone else is grouping up for these get-togethers before the shows, maybe some guys (or gals) around the Ny area who are planning to go to the Manhattan Center show would like to meet up someplace in the city beforehand too....just a thought - but if anyone finds this to be a kewl idea besides me, either reply to this message with some ideas on where to meet or E-mail me at :

P.S. - If anyone hears of other DT shows in the NY Metro Area, lemme know - I would think its kinda odd for them to have only one appearance around their hometown, dontcha think?!?!

I'll pop into my mailbox and, for instance, 522 and > 524 will be there - but not 523. Could this be a local problem? Is the > digest software F*CKING things up? Hmm....

It *appears* that the digests are missing because the digest software occasionally messes up on the digest number. But when I've gone in to look for missing posts, I've seen that all of them are there.

Issue 523, for example, should have come out on Sep 21. If you look at the date on 524, it came out on the 21st.

To find out if it's a local problem, you can send

    index ytsejam

to ytsejam-request@arastar.com (with no subject, index left justified, and no text above this line) and you'll get a list of what's in the archive. If the digest isn't there, then that number didn't go out (but the contents go out in the following numbered issue).

If you look back at the list before the move here, there were days when the list was down (heck, I remember a period of time when it seemed to be down for almost a week) so issues were sporadic during that time (which is why it was moved here).

Does that answer your question? If not, we probably should move this into private mail (since it isn't really Dream Theater related).

I agree with you, Stone! I feel your pain! No station in the Philly/Wilmington range plays any good stuff at all! Especially DT. That's why I barely even listen to the radio anymore. I haven't heard a single second of Awake either. The rest of ya are all bums!! ;-)

Hi this is just a quick note of support for my second favorite drummer, the octopus (a purely affectionate name for Portnoy, of course). I was priveledged enough to hear an advanced copy of Awake last night over at a DT Lover's house, and must say the intro was pure Portnoy perfection!! I was enthralled from the outset by his ever expanding virtuosity and felt compelled to comment on continual creativity! Two thumbs up from this DT Lover (I'm also a drummer, heavily influenced by the likes of Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, Charlie Watts, Calhoun, and Weckl)! Any other drummers out there with some olfactory observations (i.e.- is it cheese, cheese on a leash, or just pure, unabashed genius??)?

Ok, as promissed, a review of Jordan Rudes with the Dixie Dregs. His playing was terrific. IF he will join DT he won't have a problem playing Kevin's parts. The only thing i didn't like was his keyboard sound. But maybe he had no control over this since he was filling in. His sound was too piano-like, and often he hit such high notes that it was hard on the ears.

I wore my ytsejam t-shirt, and he did notice it. But what blew me away was that Steve Morse was wearing one of DTs t-shirts. It was a tanktop with the Majesty logo on the front, glittery-gold "Dream Theater" above it, and the Japanese flag, and Japanese writing on the back. It was really cool. Is that a shirt from the last tour, or will it be the new one? Steve also saw my shirt, and acknowledged it with a smile.

After the show, I had a couple of people come up to me and ask me "what dowes this Dream Theater mean. Steve had a shirt on, and you do too.". I explained to them WHO they are, and the type of music they play. As I was talking to one guy, this petite, blond woman grabbed me by the arm and asked where I got the shirt, and how long ago. I explained to her that it was from our mailing-list. She pulled me by the arm, and said that she wants to introduce me to someone.

As she pulled me up to the bar, she said, 'This is my husband.' The guy turned around, and I couldn't believe my eyes. IT WAS JAMES!!!!!!!!!!!

He asked me where I got the shirt, and who made it. He said that he's never seen one like it, and that it wasn't one of theirs. At first he seemed angry a bit. Thinking someone was ripping the band off. I tried to explain to him what it was all about, and that the reason I bought one was that I couldn't get a real one. I told him that I would buy all the shirts I could once they come to town.

He asked me if i'd seen them live before. I said only on the Live in Tokyo video, and that I have a CD bootleg of a show. It seemed as if he wasn't too thrilled about that either.

After he calmed down a bit, he was a really nice guy. :) He asked some questions about our mailing list. After he realized that we know a lot about the band he said with a smile, "You guys know everything! I should be asking YOU questions!". His wife interrupted, and asked me if I knew any tour dates. I said I did, and James said, "I don't even know any!, I'll find out on Saturday. You guys probably know when I'm going to take my next shit!".

Here is some stuff that we talked about:

James was in Vancouver visiting friends and family. He will go back (to new york) on saturday to start rehersing for the tour.

They are really great friends with Steve Morse, and it meant a lot to him that he wore DTs shirt.

There is a definite, intentional theme/melody throughout all the songs that ties the whole album together.

The album is very diverse, and should be listened to several times, before passing judgement. James said to listen at least 4 times.

The Mirror, and Lie is actually all one song, but it was split on the album into two. (my guess so that Lie could be a single and be played on the radio, MTV)

The next single will probably be Caught In A Web, or Scarred.

I asked him about Foundation Forum, and said that it went pretty good except that Malmsteen almost ruined it for them. They were really pissed off at him. He told me that DT was supposed to be on around midnight, and Malmsteen was playing before them. During a cover of a Hendrix song, Yngwie set his guitar on fire. The fire marshal came and the building had to be evacuated. DT was delayed for over 2 hours. Yngwied came in to their dressing room after the show, and tried to appologise, saying that 'he loved them'. James said that he doesn't think any fans left early though.

I asked him about the keyboardist situation: They are still auditioning! They haven't found the right guy yet. They will take their time to make sure the guy will be perfect. The guy(s) who will play on the tour, may not be the ones who will join the band full time. He said that he was sorry that it didn't work out with Jens. (maybe Jens can ellaborate on what happened?)

He said that he will see me again on tour, and as I was leaving he said that he's gotta get one of those t-shirts. I told me that there were some sent to the band, and that he would get one. He said that he didn't see one yet. (Jason, were the t-shirts sent directly to the band?)

This was one of the coolest things to happen to me in a long time. I didn't expect that the ytsejam t-shirt would get me noticed by a band member. I was glad i wore it! I forgot to ask for an autograph though :(
