Just picked this up from the AOL DT folder:
<<<DEREK SHERAINAN!!! (ex-kiss)
THAT IS THE NEW DT KEYBOARDIST. THEY ARE IN REHERSAL
AT THE MOMENT AND WILL START TOURING IN OCT.
IT WAS A NECK AND NECK BATTLE BETWEEN DEREK AND NEW YORK PROG-ROCK KEYBOARD
WIZ LOUIE MASTRO.
BOTH AUDITIONED TWO WEEKS AGO IN NYC. ACCORDING TO DT SOURCES BOTH WERE
INCREDIBLE AND THE BAND WAS SPLIT EVENLY ABOUT WHO TO CHOOSE. INSTEAD OF A
COIN TOSS IT WAS DECIDED TO CHOOSE DEREK BECAUSE HE IS A BERKLEY COLLEGE
ALUMNI LIKE MOST OF DT.
I THINK THIS IS A HUGE MISTAKE.
LOUIE MASTRO COMES FROM A PROGRESSIVE BACKGROUND
HAVING PLAYED WITH SOME OF THE LEGENDS IN RECENT YEARS( richard sinclair,
daevid allen , and OF COURSE
CAMEL AND STEVE HACKETT) .DEREK IS KNOWN TO NOT LIKE
PROGRESSIVE ROCK AND HIS TRACK RECORD WITH ALICE COOPER AND KISS IS NOT
LIKELY TO MAKE US FORGET KEVIN MOORE. LET US HOPE THAT DEREK FAILS TO WORK
OUT AND THEY CALL LOUIE MASTRO TO DO THE TOUR. HE IS
THE CLOSEST WE WILL GET TO KEVIN(sigh). WRITE TO DT
AND TELL THEM THAT THEY MADE A MISTAKE!!!>>>

Message-ID: <MiVwnhW00bkSIEK1IP@andrew.cmu.edu>
Well, I broke down and listened to Bill's dub of Awake, and here are my
thoughts...
6:00 - wow. Awesome chorus. Wild. Very interesting. Great keys.
"6:00 on a Christmas Morning. 6:00 on a Christmas Morning"
This song is very DT.
Caught in a Web - wow. *Really* awesome chorus. And the part that
goes "does this voice the wounds of your soul?" is really cool.
The instrumental sections are pure Dream Theater. The song
is very heavy, but in a melodic way that just really kicks ass.
Innocence Faded - a lot of people are calling this one too commercial.
Well, the chorus is pretty pop-sounding, but the rest of the song is
just beautiful, and not nearly as commercial sounding as
Another Day. And the ending (instrumental part) is again
the kind of stuff we love Dream Theater for. Driving, soaring,
melodic. The chorus is kind of annoying, though.
Erotomania - Pretty cool. Very much in the same vein as the instrumental
parts of I&W. Can't say too much about it because I only heard it
twice, and when listening to a whole album it's hard to remember
which thing is which when you don't have lyrics to help you place
things.
Voices - Excellent song. The music, the vocals, the way it's produced...
Mike thinks it's their best, and I can see where he gets that idea.
The transition to Silent Man is sort of Pink Floydish, and very
cool, but I think Voices stands better on its own.
The Silent Man
Pretty cool lyrics, and a really good song, but not the kind of thing
most of us listen to DT for. Still, not bad at all.
The Mirror
Puppies on Acid thing. Really neat, especially the keys. It's
more strictly structured than something like Voices, Metropolis,
or Learning to Live, and for that reason, I think, isn't as interesting
as it could be. But it's very well written, especially where they
suddenly break into Space Dye Vest. That part is totally amazing,
and it might be my favorite part of the whole album.
Lie - Very heavy, essentially a reprise of the Mirror. The guitar solo
at the end is truly spectacular. Probably the least interesting song
on the album.
Lifting Shadows off a Dream - having a hard time remembering this
one. But, like the rest, it's very good.
Scarred - Really long, really good. A lot like A Change of Seasons
or Learning to Live. This is the kind of thing most of us listen
to Dream Theater for.
Space Dye Vest - Kevin is a genius. An irreplacable genius. They can
find someone to play his parts, but they're not going to find someone
who can write them. This song is so unbelievably sad...it's just
beyond words. I love the way the main melody is worked into
so many other songs on the album, too. Especially the part of the
Mirror tha I mentioned before.
So who says this isn't a concept album?
It's slightly more guitar-oriented than Images and Words, but Kevin was
by no means shut out on this one. He's the one who came up with the
central theme (SDV), after all, and the keys are brilliant everywhere
(except in Lie, where they're too simple and too quiet.)
Finally, about whether to expect Images and Words 2...well, this is the
same band. Telling a different story this time around, but the music is
pure DT the whole way through. Some things that are better than
I&W...James's singing in places reminds me of John Arch...not the voice,
but the harmonies and melodies...not that they are particularly
Arch-like, but when I hear the awesome choruses to 6:00 and Caught in a
Web, i think of other awesome choruses like fata Morgana and Exodus.
Just a thought. I really enjoy listening to James on this album. can't
wait to get the CD.

Yes we know... and I hope Awake goes Multi-Platnium and wins tons of
grammys! :) Which I'm sure if every gets their head our of their ass they
will!

Cool... so the intro and outro parts of Lie really kick on Awake?? I
really do like the guitar solos on Lie, so if they're anything like that,
Lie'll have to kick ass! However if this toned down single of Lie will
sell records for DT, far be it in my way to stop it. And when you think
about it, this is about the best way the could handle the situation! Damn
smart idea if you ask me.

What about Yes's keyboardist.... sure he's old, but he can really rock

OK, how many months ago did I say this? I was branded as a
"jazzer" (whatever that means). I guess it takes a direct connection
with DT to get a lot of people on the list to OPEN THEIR EARS to new
players or players that they don't know about. Having first said it, I

I don't know if you're talking about me personally or just the list in
general but I've been into the Dregs, oh, about 14 years before I ever heard
the words "Dream Theater." I've seen Steve Morse about 10 times at this point
and every time has been a thrill but he and the guys get better and better.
Sat. nite's show was his best ever, that I've seen.
As for Shawn Lane, he's still to scary!;-) We can dream, I guess. (sigh)

Jason included a message when he sent us our shirts that
said they would be available for re-order soon from some
other guy (whose name escapes me at the moment). Considering
the trouble they had with design changes and a few other
things, (a lot of us had to change some of the glow-in-the-dark
black shirts to ash or white), I wouldn't be expecting them
to be available for reorder right away (meaning this month or
next month- my interpretation).
The shirts look awesome though. I've gotten compliments from
people who aren't even into rock, much less know who Dream
Theater is.

Cool! I really enjoyed those songs from Awaken! :) Wow, Awake, Awaken,
any coincidence? Loved your review dude, as well as everyone elses. When
the CD comes out I'm having some people who don't really know DT that
well and we can get some unbiased reviews of it also. later. (BTW, i've
played Lie to a few people, most people say it's awesome... One of my
friends even liked most of what he heard on I&W... I thought he wouldn't
like it... but I'm surprised.)

Japanese Radio and HeavyMetal Magazin are reporting that the reason of
Kev's leaving is only a defference of Musical direction between Kev and
rest of them. But They didn't mention about what kind of music Kev is
devoted to. I'm feeling uneasy what should I do, if he is devoted to
some kind of glundge music. I like him because his merodyline is so beau-
tiful, e.g. 'Wait for sleep', and his progressive sence, e.g. 'Only a matter
of time'. I'm wondering whether the rest of them are able to find a genius
Keyboard player like Kev.
anyone who know about this here?
Some e-mail is really appreciated.
Thanks in advance. C-ya!

Well, if anyone is still doing the old BBS thing (I know the
internet has a way of dominating one's life) I would like to invite one
and all on the Ytsejam digest to call my board.
The theme is music, Rush and Dream Theater in particular. I
support those two bands the most, though I also have a soft spot in my
heart for King's X, the Galactic Cowboys, and so forth.

Just heard it. It's about time considering the album's
out next week!
They played the pup, I mean *The Mirror*, outro part at the
end. This isn't on the single version, is it? If not,
then it's cool that they're playing it off the album
instead. Perhaps, then, some people won't dismiss it as just
[non-progressive] metal as a lot of us did at first.
