Does anybody have the Guitar World magazine interview
with John Petrucci and John Myung. I think that it's
the November 1994 issue. The front cover has a picture
of "Prince" on it.
Unfortunately for me, some idiot ripped some pages out
of the only copy at my local public library. I was
pissed! Well, if someone has a transcribed copy of it
somewhere then PLEASE email me a copy. I would really
appreciate it.

Hi all!
There has been enough talk about musicians on the list and
jammers interested in keyboard parts to get me off my lazy butt and
say that I'm a 17 year old keyboardist who was recently in a DT/Rush
cover band, and anybody interested in keyboard transcriptions,Kevin
Moore/Derek discussions,or for that matter anything concerning the
music of DT is more than welcome to email me.

Hi, all!
I started reading 'Jam about a two months ago and finally got round to
contributing.... (God only knows, it took me long enough! =:} )

I've been trying to play like Kevin for several years now (some hope...)
and I _still_ can't get the start of Wait For Sleep right! Anybody else
managed it? This is my first post to Ytsejam so I'll keep it short.
Are there any more keyboardists out there? There seems to be a lot of
guitar discussion here, but little keyboard stuff (not that I'm putting
guitarists down :) ) In particular, does anyone know if the full
transcriptions of the keyboard parts will be in the Awake book? Is it
going to be everything, or will it just be tab and melody? I've got most
of Space-Dye Vest figured out, but there's a couple of chords that I can't
quite figure. Any help much appreciated....
Secondly, does anyone know the reason why DT cancelled the UK tour apart
from London? I was all set to go to Glasgow and they pulled out! A real
shame as I was looking forward to seeing how Derek fitted in. I still
haven't heard any of his DT stuff, so I don't know how he compares to
Kevin. More (no pun intended :) to the point, does anyone know if/when
they're coming back to the UK?
I was considering coming across to the Ytsecon, but I just can't afford
the airfare. Enjoy yourselves, guys. I'll be sitting in sunny (?)
Scotland feeling jealous.
Before then, PANIC! Our bands got their first gig on Sunday with the
current line-up and we're covering QR's Someone Else? with just piano and
vocals. Wish me luck!!

Now before we start a Nelson bashing thread (though Frank bashing would be
OK <grin>), please file thier guitarist (Brett Garsed) under INCREDIBLE
talent who wants to eat and pay his bills. If you haven't heard of him,
look for an album called "Quid Pro Quo" with T.J. Helmrich (worthy in his
own right) on Legato records (MVarney's fusion label). BG also appears on a
couple of compilation CDs, also published by Legato.

Hello everyone, it's Babs. This note is to Bernd. I feel so bad that
your all the way over in Germany (I also feel bad for all the European,
and Asian ytsejammers). I don't want to exclude anyone. How 'bout the
next time I speak to their management if I ask them if they have a birthday
club or perhaps I can arrange it for when they fly Derek and James in they
do a little lap over you way and grab you - after all it is your birthday.
Just a little light stuff for you all, this is not that serious of a note.
I'm sure that I will get yelled at by the guy who reemed out everyone for
commenting on the most trivial things because we like to see our names in
print or something. HAVE A NICE DAY :) -BABS
PS - Whatever happened to that poor guy that us girls yelled at because he
addressed his post to his fellow brothers of the ytsejam? I hope that
we (the women) didn't scare him away. Anybody know what happened to him?

don't have it in stock. They are guessing two to three more

About the opening (and other) F# chords in the transcription of
Metropolis in the I&W book being D/F#, I don't think that's right. I
used to play it as B/F# (and I'm still not sure the book is right). Most
of the stuff in the book is dead on (at least in notation--some of the
tab and the lyrics are wrong), especially in Metropolis, so I'm sticking
with the book's F#. Just my little poorly worded opinion.
Dario
P.S. All the good stuff about Coroner is right. Try No More Color,
Mental Vortex, or my favorite, Grin, and prepare to be impressed! And
just as an aside, for any still not in the know, you all should pick up
King Crimson's VROOOM ep (the full album Thrak comes out the end of this
month). These guys are truly the shit!

1) Well, first of all, I did THINK about posting about FNM's new album
(King for a Day...Fool for a Lifetime), but really have been too busy. I
too got it last Tuesday (today was the new KMFDM!) and have been enjoying
it since then on quite a regular basis. At first, I was a little let
down from Angel Dust, but that is passing as each time I listen to this
new disc, I like it more! One thing that continues to bother me is the
lack of keyboards. They really cut back on the keyboard attention this
time around and placed more emphasis on the guitar. Nothing wrong with
cranking up the guitar a bit, but they don't even have a guitarist right
now!! Trey (Scummy) only played for the album, and is not part of the
band, nor will he be touring with them. Anyway, personal favorites of
mine include: King for a Day (reminded me of Angel Dust :), Cuckoo for
Caca, and The Gentle Art of Making Enemies (vocals are insane! :).
Overall, an excellent album, and if you hurry, you'll get a sticker with
the CD!! (Does anyone know if the tape comes with a sticker too?)
2) I was elated at your mention of FNM and saddened at your knock of
Peter Steele from Type O Negative. I am a humongous fan of Type O
Negative and I happen to think his voice is REALLY cool. Have you
listened to the whole album? And what is the song that is 'ALWAYS' on
the radio (I never listen to the radio)? I know you've got your opinion
(not a very knowledgeable one if you've only heard one song...), but I've
got mine too and just thought I'd stand up for a terrific band.
3) I also remember Mike Bahr mentioning ska and his definition
(sorry) was absolutely incorrect. As I recall, he defined ska as bands
such as Green Day who can't really play but just play shit as fast as
possible, etc. Ska, as I've come to understand it, is the combination of
styles such as metal, punk, hardcore, reggae and jazz. There's usually
lots of horns and stuff. The only ska bands I'm into right now are both
phenominal: Fishbone and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Check them out if
you should have the occasion; they're both great! If anyone is familiar
with any other ska-related bands, please E-mail me.
Sorry for the non-DT content, blah blah blah... ;)

To the person who was wondering about James' Napalm Death t-shirt in the
PMU video:
Barney (Napalm Death's vocalist) is a big Dream Theater fan (remember, he
'sang' Metallica's Damage Inc. with DT at the covers gig in London) and
when he had the occasion to meet them, he gave them t-shirts. Mike P is
the only one to have seen the band play last I heard, but that was almost
two years ago. Anyway, the PMU video was shot on short notice, and the
Napalm Death shirt just happened to be what James was wearing. They're
actually a very good band, if you're into that sort of super-heavy,
grindcore type music.

P.S.--If anyone can tell me why I've been having a bitch of a time
sending stuff to this list, I'd love to hear from you. When I try to
send stuff to ytsejam@anthor.arastar.com, it only gets through less than
half the time; in fact, if you're reading this, it was one of the lucky

I have the new disk and i like it a great deal...I do think in some respects
it is thier lightest album yet ( although some of it is really heavy). The
band has definitely changed a lot from "The Real Thing" and since Patton
joined the band I've seen more of a Mr. Bungle influence in the music. IMO
the keyboards are mixed little to low on some of the heavier songs. I like the
new guitarist though.

LOS is an excellent boot. Parts of it are a little shy of the
quality of DoE, but I like LOS better. The drum solo at the
end of TLF has a cool intro to Status Seeker. And the solo itself
makes the DoE solo sound like Romper Room in comparison. Plus
it has the "Puppies on Acid" (a.k.a. The Mirror intro) intro to
Take The Time.

This video is a club shot (ie, tripod) from 1/8/93. The copy that I

There are 2 videos from this show floating around. It is the DoE
show. If I remember correctly, the one w/o the beginning of the show
is the aud video. There is another one that DT shot as some
promotional video called "Industry Showcase: An Evening With Dream

IMO, is EXTREMLY annoying interviewing several people. I also believe

Since someone wanted to know... this is back from 7/93
James: He looked pretty tired, but he hung around for a few minutes and answered lamebrain questions like "Is your hair naturally curly?" He wasn't feeling particularly talkative, though - from what I'm told, that's true to form when he's in that kind of a mood..
John P.: He was so cool - very personable, very chatty guy. I still think he's lying when he says he's 5'11", he ain't that much bigger than I am! :) <approximately 5'8 1/2"> Fielded lots of dumb questions with grace and a few intelligent questions with relief. <G>
John M.: Didn't say very much <of course>, spent most of the time talking to one guy that was apparently in a band he knew. But later he came back and let those of us that were left in the gate - which the guard wouldn't do. Kudos are extended from everyone who was there then! :)
Kevin: That man is such a trip. He had us all in hysterics with his wisecracks. I got him to actually *smile* for only the second time that night - you wouldn't think he knew how sometimes.
Mike: >The world's biggest DT fan< Absolutely!!! Enthusiasm must be his middle name, he was just thrilled to death that we <well, some of us> were diehard fans. Most bands will sign tickets and GO, but he stuck around for a good half hour with us. Probably one of the last times anyone saw him clean shaven - a month later in the LiT video he had a beard. :)

<<ytsecon stuff deleted>> Babs: First, has there been any interest of doing a "convention" out west somewhere? Second (forgive me if I missed this before), what is going to be the cost/`jammer to reserve the space for this? Third (for anyone in general), what's cheaper for cross-country travel: flying or Amtrack? > PS - Whatever happened to that poor guy that we girls yelled at because he > addressed his post to his fellow brothers of the ytsejam? I hope that > we (the women) didn't scare him away. Anybody know what happened to him? He's auditioning for the lead part in the sequel to "A Clockwork Orange" :>\>

Interesting choice of words there, why?
Am I the only Napalm Death/DT fan around here??? I know the range between the two is a bit broad.

Hmm, I dunno... how could they find a vocalist to replace James? Mike seems the next irreplaceable (maybye the drummer from Cynic?). Myung, well, since you can't hear him half the time, perhaps... but after seeing him play up close, I realize that he contributes a *hell of a lot* more to the songs than I thought before.
A friend of mine (who has never met the band) thinks, as you do, that Petrucci is the driving force behind the band.

Very emotional. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ But in a good way! When I saw them in SFO, he said he had spent almost the whole week on the Fates' bus because those guys were partying fools. Definite party animal. Smokes Marlboro Lights, ~ a pack and a half a day. Drinks Yeagermeister. > J. La Brie - don't really know. Now he's becoming a spokesman for the > band. I too wonder about that infamous Napalm Death T-shirt.
Seems a little offstandish at first, but I think he's just playing the part as frontman for the band with seriousness.
> D. Sherinan - don't know anything so lets go back to...
Really cool [and the gang] dude. He seemed very enthusiastic and just liked to chill and talk with the fans for quite a while. Back then, he was really hoping that DT would make him a permanent member, and he was glad that we supported this.

Has anyone one else noticed that one small part of ACOS sounds exactly like part of Steve Morse's "Tumeni motes". I am not sure where because I don't have it on cd and it's such a long song. It is definately in the last half. Like that helps but check it out anyway. doeas Does anyone agree?

Holy shit, I really started something with a simple fuckin opinion! I just read 5 jams in the past hour cause I've been gone all weekend at a conference in LA. So I am responding in order of the responses on the jam,
On Mar ?? James Bako wrote in response to my message:
*My message again just for you Frank!* >> Just got the new SID mailing and it said *gulp* TYPE O NEGATIVE is >> opening for QR on the North American tour? That really sucks. IMHO!!! >
>Why does it suck?? Just because QR is not touring with some other similar >prog-metal band, such as hmmmm..... Dream Theater?? Give QR a break, >isn't this the same band that brought Suicidal Tendencies with them on >their last US tour? Give them some credit for open-mindedness.
I do give them credit for open-mindedness, they can take whoever they want on tour with them and I'd still go. NOTICE I put IMHO in my post, am I not allowed to voice my opinion that I think personally that TON sucks? CALM DOWN PAL!
>This is the same kind of bullshit attitude
Bullshit attitude? Just because I don't like your 2nd favorite band I have a attitude? I'm sure there are ALOT of people who don't like KISS on this list but because they are my favorite band doesn't mean I'm going to tell someone they have a bullshit attitude! I think you should look in the mirror before you start ripping people because they don't like TON. GROW UP! >Now if Type O Negative could only open for Dream Theater :)
Oh the Horror. (Had to throw that in to see if you grew up after reading this! :) )
>James Bako >jbako01@barney.poly.edu
Someone else also said for me to remember that not everone hates what I hate. I know that, but that's why I put IMHO afterwards. It's my opinion.
cashmadb@cleo.bc.edu (Frank) also wrote a bunch of bs I won't bother repeating. GROW UP FUCK! Do you think anyone else gives a fuck what you think either. If you don't like my opinion GOOD! This is a free fuckin country.
****above written after response towards my original post, following written after Frank bashed others on the jam.****
FRANK CALM DOWN PSYCHO BOY!!!! IT'S JUST AN OPINION!!!!! I bet you think you are cool to threaten someone over a computer list, shakin' man I am fuckin' shakin'!
OK BTW thanks to Jeff and a few others who supported my right to my own opinion. Please excuse my furious tone in the Frank responses but I was quite floored that someone could be so moronic. One more thing Frank, stay in school dude.
Sorry for the length and for the time it took to respond to this, but I felt I should try to respond in my own behalf on something I started. *Wheeeeeeesh*, Whoa, large flame just past me by. I M H O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Live it, love it, learn it.
