    Ytsejamers,

The Organization (formerly Death Angel) is scheduled to play here in
Minneapolis next Sunday. Does anyone know if they are supporting a new
album, or are they still playing off the self-titled release?

To Simon: I agree, Master of the Rings is fantastic. Good to see
    Helloween is still alive.

Heh... actually no, I was actaully throwing two things in there. There is
a 3 minute solo of some instrument I don't even know what it is (someone
said it's a thumb piano, whatever that may be) and a symbol (just a
roll.) Well suffice to say it's pretty dumb and not even really a song.
Just some weird notes with a symbol roll. This happens to be on a great
album though, King Crimson's Lark's Tongues in Aspic. Then there is a 1
minute bird chriping solo and a symbol roll at the beginning of Yes's
Close to the Edge. They came out right about the same time and it just so
happens that Bill Bruford had changed to King Crimson from Yes, after Yes
released Close to the Edge. The first Bruford album is Lark's... so they
both could be Brufords idea, and if nothing else are both Brufords symbol
roll. So I just sort of mixed em together and you get a 3 minute bird
chirping solo. I suppose ANYTHING would be better than that stupid thumb
    piano. :)

I didn't SAY it was the 'definetion' of Prog. It just happens to be the
most quoted passage of Prog musicans. I can think of 5 or 6 bands that
have quoted it, and there are probably even more. So no, Yes never quoted
Mars, but many did. It was just an example.

I would describe Another Day as, well... maybe Soft Rock. I really don't
know. In that respect (the unfathomable style) I'd have to say it is
Progressive. The style is Prog, the music is not.

Speaking of that symbol, in my 10th Grade History book, that same symbol
appears on the first page with 2 quotes, one from, uh Washington or
Colombus, and one from the guys to set foot on the moon first. So, who know?

Hey! Watch it, man! IMHO, I think that Bang Tango was way ahead of their
time in 1991 with the album "Dancin on Coals" which was avoided by nearly
everyone in the country. Now I still like GNR, even though most of my
eighties stuff has been sold, but give these guys a chance! They were one
of the first bands to combine metal, hard rock, and FUNK (and I mean FUNKY
funk), way before the Chili's got big. They display excellent musicianship
with two, countem, 2 amazing guitarist and an awesome bassist who is right
up there with Flea (but you can hear Flea better in the mix). AND in a
recent interview with Jerry Cantrell, Alice in Chains' guitarist, guess
what band was on the baseball hat that he wore? Well, that's enough. I
just thought I should defend them. This is NOT a flame!

says who? :) If you're talking traditional music (which I'm not) then,
yeah, it's not allowable (since everything is usually in terms of 2).
But if you include modern music (which I am) then 1/1, 23/17, and 16/9
are all valid. Even 0/0 (shorthand for cage's 4'13 (I think I got that
    name right) :)

(I like the way that you go on to explain how one could implement 16/9 :)

    Hi there,

I didn't read all messages about the 'what's progressive' thread, but due to the articles I did read. I'm getting the feeling that ev'rybody is trying to define 'progressive' purely based on music theiry, i.e. 'that band is progressive 'cause they play 13/8 with a 7/4 chorus', and if everyting else fails, call all leftovers 'progressive', like Lazarus wrote (with a smiley, ok):

    > .... Maybe the > defintion of progressive is that: "The band cannot be defined and > labelled in any 'popular music' category" :)

In fact, it's very simple (at least, IMAO), a band makes progressive music if there is progression in their songs; not a straight verse-chorus-verse-chorus song, but a bridge every now and than, and everytime the chorus sounds a little different or whatever, just progression. If this is one of the main characteristics of the band, the band is progressive. If a band has only a few of those songs, I don't consider it a progressive band.

    Oh well, just my opinion,

I normally would not complain b/c it has only been about a week or 2... but after seeing all of the problems with him... and considering he told me that he mailed them out April 4th using priority mail... they should have been here by now... and considering that I have emailed him 2x since then, and had no reply... I think that it is safe to say that I have also been screwed by him. Will whoever is compiling the list of Jeremy victims please email me via private email. Thanks alot.

Good morning everyone, it's Babs. This is in response to Jaime the Dragon's post. This is so cool that you are familiar with where I'm from. Are you originally from the Rochester area? Yes, DT did get a good amount of airplay on WCMF 96 for a while and I agree with you I listen to GCC 90.7 out of Batavia a lot (I also take night classes there). They truly crank. One thing I am saddened about is our classic station Rock It 95 (they played a lot of old 70's bands, etc.) has just been taken over by another entity and they have changed their programming to total alternative/progressive, they now go by the name THE NERVE. I called the station to bitch (something I do best) and they tell me that they are aiming for the 25 year old listener. I'm only 26, sometimes I wonder where they take their surveys. Anyways, sorry to annoy everyone with this UFI (Useless F--k-ing Information). I just felt like talking. -BABS

PS. I do remember the stories about the Hillside strangler, we have a lot of weird stuff go on around these parts. See ya.

    To Steve Borzilleri:

You are correct. I was too quick to reply and I just shot from the hip. So for what it's worth, I apologize for the flamishness of my remarks.

Yeah, an octave higher that Mariah Carey would be difficult. Actually, the soprano I'd mentioned did a brief double take the first time she listened to a M.C. album and noted her range.

On LaBrie: Maybe you've hit on why I'm not terribly fond of him. The times I've seen him perform (admittedly only twice), he just was not a happy camper. And I don't particularly enjoy watching people having a bad time.

I really did not want to get into this singer discussion, but oh well, I'm really bored. I would have to disagree with you. I always thought that James was more of a falcettist that Geoff. I believe both were opera trained (anyone know for sure?), but I've always thought that Geoff's voice was more full. It just seems like he has more "uumph" in his voice than James. I'd also have to agree with the guy who wrote that James' voice doesn't do much for me, either. IMHO, I noticed that on AWAKE, James made his voice a lot more "raspy" throughout a lot of the album. This is supposed to convey more emotion in the lyrics being sung. But, IMHO, it seemed to me like these were forced by James, like he was almost saying "ok, I'm gonna make my voice sound raspy and hoarse here, here, and here." Now if you compare that to Geoff's voice in "Someone Else?" like at the points when he sings "stronger, proud" or especially "there's so much more I can beeeeeee!", it just hits me a lot more emotionally than James' voice does. Anyway, that's just my $.02 for the day and this post is getting too long. Later, all

I've heard > people say Kevin never enjoyed himself live, but at least he was > indifferent about it when he performed, whereas LaBrie really seems to get > angry an awful lot. >

A good example of LaBrie getting pissed off can be seen in the video boot of the DT in NYC, Manhattan Ctr., in '93. They were doing "A Fortune in Lies" and throughout the whole show, people were moshing like crazy and stage-diving. Well, the end of the song starts coming around, right at where he says "you rode the red" twice to end the song? Well, anyway, as he was going to say it the first time, he was walking along the stage, and an audience member got up on stage and bumped into him. Needless to say, LaBrie got pissed and took the guy and shoved him hard off the stage, just in time to hit the second "you rode the reh - HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAD" perfectly. He then lectured the crowd before the next song. But that's one example of what you're talking about.

I see where he's coming from with regards to stuff like that. There were a lot of times where I saw/heard him joking with the crowd and smiling at them (LiT video). It just depends on the crowd. When you work your ass off practically everyday to sing these songs, and all you see is people moshing and not paying attention to the song, it's natural to get pissed ( I personally get pissed when I'm singing a gig and that happens, and I am nowhere near where LaBrie is talent or exposure-wise). Basically my point is, his mood (and the mood of the rest of the band) is greatly affected by the crowd. I mean look at Japan - in the LiT video, even MYUNG smiles while he's playing...now that's a stretch! :) So if the crowd's cool, then the band'll be cool, if the crowd is a bunch of pricks, then (even though they shouldn't be, since they're entertainers), the band may be the same way........keep that in mind next time you go to a show....god, I sound like my mother.........i better stop now....>:P

First off, I saw Extreme lastnight here in Oregon, and they rocked. While their new drummer is no Portnoy, he is very good. Of course Nuno preformed to expectations.

Second, I read this mailing list everyday (or at least I try to), and I am continually in awe of the diversity of the members of this list. Where else in the world can you read about Bang Tango, Yngwie Malmsteen, Metallica, Aldo Nova, Mozart, Fates Warning, Pavoratti (spelling?), and Dream Theater (just to name a few) all in the same place? I stand up and aplaud you all, even the less liked members of this list. Keep it up.

Finally, I have discovered that casts are a great place to put DT art.

I just thought that I would mention the awesome show that some us of jammers (me, Steve Z, Mike Backof) went to on Tuesday. We saw Echolyn at the little hole-in-the-wall club called the 8X10, in Baltimore. All 5 of them were crammed onto a tiny little stage. I think they get the name of the club from the size of the stage. :)

I would guess there were only about 30 or so people there. We were able see them from anywhere we wanted. For the 1st set, we stood right in the front and for the 2nd we moved to a balcony to the upper-left looking right down on top of the band. We had a great very of Chris Busby's awesome keyboard work. Kevin and Derrick would be proud!

I would also like to say for those of you that may have heard their music and thought that it was "too light" for you, you should really do yourself a favor and check them out live! They really rip and the music really comes to life. The guitar has tons more power and alot of bite. It's really cool to see them pull off all of their 3-part harmonies live! (something I wish DT could do live)

We got to hang out a bit with Chris after the show. I've spoken with him before and he is really cool. I brought a few tapes for him (Kev demos (he asked for them), some live DT and live Extreme) and he brought a little package of stuff for me -- their 1st album on tape, a promo cd for As The World, a poster, a black and white glossy promo picture, a copy of their Sony bio, a copy of the Gardners Guide for Suffocating the Bloom, and some black and white pictures from the albums pre-production.

    DT CONTENT!!!!!!

He started telling us about the time that Mike P. came to one of their shows. Mike told him that Echolyn was welcomed to open for DT any time they wanted to. Chris said they probably need to talk things over with managment etc. but it didn't seem all that unlikely!!

BTW - anyone get a good tape of the Covers Gig yet?

Yeah. . .me too. I traded with him about two months ago, he owes me about two tapes (thank God it wasn't a huge trade). I wrote him back a couple of times and he actually replied and his excuse was that he was too busy. I've kinda blown it off by now but I am still pissed! Later.

Steve Perry's Greatest Moments: (no order)

    1) Winds Of March - part where the song picks up. Unreal. 2) Homemade Love - the tail end of it. <shudder> 3) Mother, Father - incredibly soulful & passionate 4) La Do Da - the note going out. oof! 5) Keep On Runnin' 6) Still They Ride - Yeah, Doc - great performance. 7) Edge of The Blade 8) Little Girl - chilling 9) Happy To Give 10) Foolish Heart - love the soulfulness in that tune.

Sure, I love Geoff Tate's voice, but...I dunno. Something about Perry still floors me after all this time.

And, regarding the comment about Styx:

When I found out that Glen Burtnick had joined Styx, back in 1990, I hit the ceiling with joy. I love his solo material, I love his writing style, and I love what he did with Styx.

In fact, about a week ago, I got to see (and meet!) Glen in a very small club, where he performed with a violinist & another guitarist, acoustically. Most of the material was new stuff he'd written recently, plus, the big hit he wrote for Patty Smythe ("Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough"), "Perfect World" and, "Exit Number 9" from the "SLAVES OF NEW BRUNSWICK" CD. That was neat...

..but, he also did a cool version of "All In A Day's Work," (which I learned and performed with my old band several times) and "Edge Of The Century," with a country twang and a cool violin/acoustic guitar trade off! Hot! Hot! =)

Anyway, please - Styx w/ Burtnick may not have been "Pieces of 8" or "The Grand Illusion," but, it was far from bad. In fact, most of what Styx played when I saw them that year, on that tour, was the material Burtnick wrote for them. (They did Show Me The Way and Not Dead Yet too...funny to see Dennis DeYoung (at what, 50?) grabbing his crotch...) Burtnick filled the spot nicely...except when he flubbed the acapella intro to "Renegade." (hehe...the audience and the band laughed!)

And don't forget his work with Neal Schon on "late Nite" and Schon & Hammer's "No More Lies" single.

-Still a Glen Burtnick fan, Hairball

(p.s. incidentally, did you know that David Prater played drums/percussion on Glen's first album "TalkingInCode" and produced "Heroes & Zeros?" And that Dregs/Steve Morse Band bassist Dave LaRue also played on "TIC?" And Steve Smith of Journey? And Neal Schon's on "H&Z?" I'm a liner note freak!)

    SUBCONSCIOUS CD Update!!

    Current update: 4/14/95

NOTICE: They're all gone. All copies are currently either reserved or paid for. In the event of cancellations or of more copies becoming available, I will post immediately to the 'Jam.

THE BLANKS ARE HERE! THE SHIPMENTS ARE HAPPENING! :) I've already sent out the first 25 CDs (since Kaoru's mail still hasn't come in yet, that means 25 without counting the reserved ones.).

    1. Orders received 2. A quick review: what the hell IS Subconscious, and how can I get it? 3. Original press CDs for sale.. I don't need 'em, anyone collect this stuff? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

    1. Orders received

Here is a brief list of the orders that I have received, paid, and the CD numbers you will all be getting... if you are on this list, I have your order IN MY HAND and you are DONE, FINITO... all you need to do is kick back, relax, toss back a Kypler's, and wait for my CDs to come in the mail to me, and subsequently, to you. :) I _am_ keeping a copy of this list, in case future authenticity issues arise, you can be assured of the full _value_ of your Subconscious CD. Given the number of DT albums sold total, there is one Subconscious CD for every 11,700 Dream Theater fans. Not a bad ratio eh!! A quick note: you will notice I have set aside a few low numbers for Kaoru, and I have done this because most of the Japanese Ytsejammers will be doing a group order through her, and I wanted to get *some* of the low #'s to the land of the Rising Sun, tis only fair after all. :) That's the only orders that are not yet paid, because she still has to get the orders from the others. Any Nihon-jin Ytsejam members, email Kaoru-san if you want to get a copy of the CD! If more are reserved than space I set aside, I will fill another block of numbers somewhere in the 100's.

!!!!!!!!! Quick note!! If you "reserved" a copy with me, but have not yet sent in payment, you won't be in this list yet... DON'T PANIC! I've still got your reservation, and I _did_ say that because of the delay in the CDs getting to me in shipment (my blanks) that you could wait on payment if you wanted to. !!!!!!!!!

If I messed up, TELL ME! I've proven to be far from perfect with these orders...

    2. What the hell IS Subconscious, and how can I get it?!?

Notice: The Cds are all gone, at present. I am keeping this in the mail in the event that more become available, I won't have to re- type it all.

Subconscious is a CD, a project I undertook simply because I thought maybe it should be done. It's totally privately financed, and I think with the number of reservations that have been made, I will come out of it with my head above water, for which I owe the trustworthy members of Ytsejam a bow of gratitude. :)

NOTICE: This CD, I found out, is grey-area legality, because: 1. It's for promotional purposes only, not for resale, and; 2. It's not for sale. What you're actually purchasing from me is psychic advice. I'm throwing a free CD in with every session. Notice all of my messages end with "Take care"? That's pretty good advice! :) 3. The cost only covers manufacturing and shipping. I barely make minimum wage. Maybe I should turn myself in to Immigration! :)

But seriously folks... as pertains to the issue of legality, I'm not trying to make myself out to be some sort of arrogant ass. I'm doing this project for the benefit of the Jam, and DT is overlooking it for now (maybe because they want their free copies? heheh)... I'm not making a killing doing it, and it's taking an awful lot of time to get done. I sincerely thank all of you Jammers who have had nothing but kind words for my efforts, and I implore those of you who might not think very highly of my project here, to please, give me the benefit of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

What happened was, I felt it was time to release some of Dream Theater's rarer songs on CD, and thus I sought good copies from everywhere, including some that came from sources connected directly to the band! Thus, I think I can safely say that these are the best copies you can find outside of those in Portnoy's vault at home.

I bought a CD burner and rented equipment from a CD pressing plant nearby, so I could produce the discs. They will have printing on them and a liner cover. I had to order blanks and jewelcases in lots of 500 or more, though, and thus the risk was made: I emptied my bank account and placed the order. Fortunately, it seems I will make up the difference with CD sales.

The blanks made it and I'm underway filling the orders. The price is $25.00 US per disc. It was originally going to be $27.50, but the CD place had a good price on blanks. Its true, as one Jammer pointed out, that I could have kept the higher price and said nothing about the blanks being cheaper than before... and nobody would have known. I did it in hopes of furthering the fans-for-fans attitude that has (thankfully) already spread throughout the net, and which I am aiding as best I can with this CD project.

The CD pressing plant I got all my materials from previewed my current master, and decided it just wouldn't do. Without charging me a penny more for another glass master, they agreed to take on the job of fully digitally remastering the disc! They gave me a great rate on the studio time too.

So now it's done! The disc has been totally redone in Dolby Digital Surround Sound, compatible with any CD player but MUCH MUCH better than before, and compatible with Pro-Logic systems for full instrument separation on most tracks. The studio used the certified THX transfer guidelines to make sure everything would be as good as possible on the disc. Since I was not using the original master tapes, it couldn't be certified as a THX release.. too bad, that would have been pretty funny! :) Again, it's not a THX disc, but they used the good stuff to make it. The remastering involved a thorough noise cleanup and proper re-phasing of the instruments for surround.

Every track stands out so much better, Eve and Change of Seasons are _better than they were on TDOE_, and songs that I was hoping would sound better, such as Don't Look Past Me and Mission Impossible, now have nary a fuzz or distortion spot. It's so clean, it's the way CD was meant to be. I was confident before that this disc would satisfy the DT collector that _had_ to have it all... now I am confident that if you like DT at all and are familiar with the usual sound of their older boots.. it will BLOW YOU AWAY. :)

The tracks that were the worst originally; Wanted Dead Or Alive, Tears, Winter, and The Gorilla Session, were improved tremendously. WDOA is now on par with the best, Tears and Winter are downright tolerable (if you'd only heard the HISS...) and Gorilla... well... we tried. :) It's okay, for a recording that was horribly done to begin with.

    Here's the still-final tracklist:

    1. Eve (live w/samples) 2. A Change of Season (live) 3. O Holy Night 4. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight 5. Don't Look Past Me 6. Wanted Dead or Alive 7. To Live Forever (acoustic version) 8. The Gorilla Session 9. Mission: Impossible 10. The Back Pain Jam (RPM Warehouse) 11. Awake Heavy Jam 12. Experimental 13. Tears 14. Winter

In some cases, the rawness of the original recording will be evident, but at least you know you're hearing it the best way it can possibly be reproduced. Subconscious is _the_ DT event of early 1995! :)

Here's how to order: (or how to pay for your reserved discs)

Note: please wait on orders. As I said above, all the CDs are gone.,

    1. Please use a money order. It's simply the best way, and they cost twenty to forty cents. Make it out to me for $25.00 per disc that you want (limit 5 to a person) and I am paying the shipping cost. Each CD will be mailed in a cushioned mailer so it won't get damaged. Please make out the money order to me, Michael Bahr, not to Feel The Rush or anything like that, since this is really just my own personal endeavor.

I accepted checks for the Rush Video Montage, but a few bounced, and I was left holding the bag. I've put too much money into this, and can't afford to be stuck with bad checks, even though I trust 99% of you Ytsejam members. Plus, best of all, a money order can be traced by you, traced by me, and you know for a _fact_ that you will either get a CD, a refund, or I will get thrown in the slammer! :)

    2. International customers, I know international money orders are expensive. If there is another way you wish to pay (wire, transfer, or other) let me know and if I can do it, we'll do it. So far just sending cash has been 100% successful, so I guess there's no real harm in it. If you choose to send cash, send it in a thick envelope so it is less risky. For orders of more than one disc, it is economical and safe to use a traveler's cheque.

    3. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. By now, you know why. :) I will be literally sending out discs the DAY I get my order of blanks, so nobody will or should have to wait more than 6 weeks. If it turns out that it WILL last more than 6 weeks, I will contact you directly, or you may contact me, so that I can either discount the CD or give you a free concert on tape.

Note: that 4-6 weeks was from earlier in March when I began the project... now that the CDs are here, it shouldn't be more than another 1-2 weeks, if even that. New orders that I get after I already have current orders up to date, will take very little time.

    4. My new apartment complex won't hold enough mail for all the mail I will be getting from the list, and also I figured you guys and girls wanted to send money to a more permanent address, so I will be using my parents' (aka my permanent) address for the orders. I am 21, so don't let the word 'parents' scare you into thinking I'm some sort of kid. Also, I am in touch with my parents on a daily basis, so I will be getting the mail immediately, and they can reach me just about 24 hours a day.

If you happen to live in the Phoenix area feel free to page me at 602-232-6647. Besides all the CD stuff, I'm always up for lunch 'n' trading with local Jammers.

Send to: Michael Bahr 3383 W. Monterey St. Chandler, AZ 85226

That's a real address, folks, not a PO box, so you _know_ I'm not going to jump the border tomorrow. :) I'm putting it all on the line so you will all be comfortable enough with the project to make it a success. If you are still having doubts, let me know via email, and I will give you my home phone (don't want to post it publicly) and I will take the modem offline so you can actually raise me on it. :)

    5. Send in your order: . Your NAME . The ADDRESS for me to SEND your CD(s) to . The money order, made out for $25, $50, $75, whatever . your EMAIL address, in case I need to contact you (emerg.)

    . (OPTIONAL) your home phone.

I won't require home phone because I want you to all feel safe that I am not selling mailing lists. :) If you _do_ include it, I will use it in case of emergency (maybe the mailman spills coffee on your order and I can't read your address or something).

    3. Original press masters... I don't need 'em, anyone collecting this stuff?

Oh, one final thing! I'm selling the original (gold disc CDR) master CD from this whole operation... now that the glass master and press masters are made, it's no longer needed. It's more of a distinctive collector's item now, since it has the music BEFORE the digital remastering job. You could really tell the difference with both CDs, I'll tell you THAT! :) Since it's a thing for rock memorabilia collectors moreso than for Dream Theater fans, it'll just go to the highest bidder... the bidding being open to anyone. Please bid in $1 increments, though. I'm not really worried about who gets it, since I've heard it a million times, but some collectors have been pretty insistent about it.

The current bid is > $55 < for the gold master disc #000. by Poetic Doug Yoder. Going twice.

    4. Epilogue

I am at garion@indirect.com and will remain there until the end of time, so please mail me if you are confused, need information, are angry, sad, lonely, maybe even a little whimsical, and need to get in touch with me. Thank you ALL for showing such solidarity that a 21-year-old college student emptied his bank account to order tons of plastic! :) You are truly, one and all, ladies and gentlemen, the best fans Dream Theater could hope for.

    Take care of yourselves, everybody...

-Mike Bahr, garion@indirect.com, humble DT discog editor, anime' collector, videogame player, CD presser, bass player, guitar player, backup vocalist, beer drinker, college stoodent, and secretly, vampire by night. :)
