It's a standard typographical element. It means nothing, other than to look "cool" I've seen it in several "decorative/dingbat" type of fonts. I think it's sort of a leaf or a pepper on a vine. It has no inherent meaning.

    Someone else said:

    > sounded right (like d flat minor - a non-existant key sig (puh-leese let's > not continue that it is a key. A key sig can't have more than 7 sharps or > flats.).

Yes, a key sig cannot have more than 7 sharps or flats (unless the key has more than 8 notes) but a KEY can... :) d flat minor would have only 7 accidentals in the sig, but the extra sharps or flats written in the music make it distinct. Of course, you really should just play c sharp and be reaosnable, but there are times where the music dictates such a weird key.

I'm sorta beginning to worry about ole 'Jer there... :(. Disappointed indeed. I _did_ get my tapes from him (a month late) but many of you have not. That's unexcusable, and I'm happy that the vast majority of Jammers are far more straight-arrow in their tradings...

25 copies of Subconcsious made it into the mail yesterday morning, and a pile more tomorrow... I want reviews! Any day now there will be a "wave" of received CDs.

    Hello Ytsejammers!

I finally got around to typing the lists of equipment used by the members of our favorite band. Sure, the FAQ delves into it, and the liner notes tell you what products they endorse, but this list delves a little further, right down to the individual string guages and drum sizes. Just like any sane Ytsejammer, I've spent literally hundreds on stuff related to Dream Theater, the CD's (regular releases, imports, bootlegs, and SUBCONSCIOUS), the tab book for Images of Nerds, and a whole slew of magazines featuring articles, interviews, pictures and listings of all their equipment. Well, I guess you can't really count the guitar magazines since I buy them anyway. :) And through my readings, I have compiled a list of most of their equipment. Anyone know what kind of mic LaBrie uses or the keyboards that Moore and Sherinian favor?

Disclaimer: THIS IS NOT A "HOW TO" GUIDE FOR DT IMPERSONATORS, it merely offers insight into how Petrucci gets those mega-crunch and shimmering clean sounds, the means through which Myung relentlessly pounds out the bottom end, and exactly how many pieces of percussion Mike Portnoy really has on that monstrous kit.

Cheers, especially if it's Labatt Ice.

Hmmm... Maybe that could be the title for Dream Theater's 20-page epic work for the Ytsejam mailing list... (yeah, maybe not. and yes, this first one is a joke.)

    1. Jarrod: no applause! I am the one who applauds others! Not you! Me! You may "take your hat off to them," or "give them a pat on the back," but no applause! (joke, dat's a joke, hahaha) And while I'm at it, I will now applaud Mike Bahr for the backbreaking effort he's putting into the now-infamous Subconscious Endeavor. (clap clap clap clap clap clap)

    2. To Whom It May Concern: While perusing the list of Subconscious names, it occured to me that the name "UG REIS CHARLES" was not there, or if it was there, then I only saw it subconsciously. Anyway, he signed off as "ChucK," and I was wondering if anyone thought of reserving him a copy? I know he'd be interested, and in all honesty I think he deserves a crack at one of them. Does anyone have any idea how to get through to him about the offer?

    3. Owners of Live At The Marquee: okay, that symbol... It's called "Alceringa," and means, translated into english, "dream time." It was used by a certain culture (I'm in the process of finding out exactly which one) to describe what they believed was the "other" state of being. They were baffled by what happened when one fell asleep, what we today refer to as dreaming. So, they gave a name to this other world that one entered during a slumber - Alceringa, the Dream Time. When I first saw the symbol on the coverslip, I was amazed because it's such an obscure symbol, but an authentic reference to dreaming. With the coverslip the memories of anthropology lectures all rushed into my head... (Michelle Garcia I'm not)

    4. Covers Gig: didn't Mike Portnoy say on the Nightwatch show that they would be "recording the show for possible future use"? That can only mean that the crafty Mr. Portnoy plans to do something with it, maybe dangle it above the audience on their next tour or something...

    5. Hartman & Co.: Baltimore? 8x10? Hey, if Mr. Backof, Mr. Z, and you are planning on seeing Dream Theater when they come back to the US, which I have a feeling you are, I know three musicians 'round those parts who are good friends of mine, and would love a good evening of revelry and Dream Theater.

    6. John Petrucci: if your eyes ever pass over these words, on this particular post, on this particular day, I will have you know, oh dextrous-and-poetic-one, that your lyrics have my mind at an impasse.

Gee, this whole Ytsejam idea reminds me of The New Zork Times...

    Some last-minute stuff:

Someone mentioned that the symbol from LATM was in a history book, with quotes by Columbus, and the first person on the moon. I guess that would make sense, seeing as how the symbol was first used to describe the "other" world of dreaming, and the astronauts on the moon are pretty much in "another" world, and Columbus is said to have discovered the "new" world. Ergo, this symbol can be used to mark new worlds...or new experiences, which is what Dream Theater called that European tour. In fact, I think one of them actually said in an interview that doing their first world tour was a whole new experience, like entering another place and time. Petrucci? Couldn't have been Myung... :)

What does everyone think of posting a nice long list, like Mike Bahr's "Subconscious" name-list, but calling it the "Screwed By Jeremy Fan Club" list?

Speaking of Mike Bahr, was that a reference to Chief Wiggum from the Simpsons by any chance? ...yeah, that'll be the day, when Dream Theater starts making obscure references to the Simpsons in their lyrics! And hey Oscar, nice bat! I remember seeing that a long time ago, in a post far, far away...

And as for this progressive debate...

    ----------

    ------------------------------

"I don't mind the term progressive rock," Petrucci continues. "To me, it exemplifies the bands who influenced us - Yes and the Dregs, for example. It stands for music that stretches boundaries with an emphasis on performance."

    'NUFF SAID.

    ----------

As for why I sometimes number my posts, and other times don't, I have no idea.

    Hello All Jammers!

Jeremy Club ----------- Well I traded with this guy twice and the first time he was on top of things and sent out the stuff within a week. This was back in November, and the second time was in December, he took about five weeks to send me my two tapes (DT Toronto gig) and I only had to mail him once saying what's the deal? before he got it to me. Overall I think he is just someone who got in over his head, but if this is the truth I wish he would try to defend himself or something. Buggered out from the stress, who knows? I wish all of you guys and gals luck getting your stuff, and Jeremy if you are listening, just stop posting for more trades and catch up damn it! There are several things implied by trading and one is some sort of code. He who screwith get black listed. I'm glad the percentage of these kind of people is pretty low.

Echolyn show ------------ I would like to second Jason Hartman's petition for you all to go see Echolyn if you get a chance, iit probably will only cost you about a $5 cover and they are incrediible musicians and I have met three of them (Chris - keys, Tom - bass, and Ray - vocals, percussion, some bass) and they are very personable guys. They really enjoy playing even if there are only thirty people in a hole in the wall club. They probably were more impressive last Tuesday then I can remember the other two times I saw them (in theaters both times). They were constantly joking and they played their heavier songs even faster and harder than usual. Chris Buzby is just incomprehensible on the keys, I was down in front on the right and could just see his left hand, I have never seen someone play that fast on keys! And after you see them live and pop the CD into the player it takes on a whole new meaning, you remember the live edge and their stage presence and smile. I saw them live before I bought any of their albums and the live experience is what sold me.

As Jason said Chris Buzby and the band were talking to Mike Portnoy and he basically said they could open if it was alright with the record companies. So the percentage chance is high but as the band said in the e-mail message nothing is in stone yet. Other things, Mike Portnoy was telling Echolyn stories of playing in Japan. He said that one morning he woke up in the tour bus, got his toothbrush and started brushing his teeth. He brushed the curtains aside only to find about 1000 fans camped out around the tour bus! He said it was one of the wildest and most rewarding feeling he ever felt! 1000 people really wanted to meet them that much.

Mastermind ---------- If you are interesting in getting Brainstorm, the second Mastermind album just e-mail bberends@pipeline.com he has the CDs for sale for about $15 each. Bill is the esteemed guitar god on the albums, be happy to comment on his music or prog in general, Bill loves to talk about "the industry". <grin... sarcasm, he hates them, but he is getting over it, I think he is close to a major distribution deal>

Local Concerts -------------- I saw a band last night that blasted the shit out of me!! They are called Boud Deun and they played the Cafe Tattoo in Baltimore (Bel Air road) and the twenty people that saw them were just as impressed. They play sort of in a Mahavishnu Orchestra, and 1970's King Crimson style with lots of improv and lightning fast instrumentals. The guitarist and the bass player are the best of the bunch, they easily outplayed anybody I have seen live in terms of speed and experimental nature. The only thing bad that could be said about them is they lack structure, but that isn't iin their style. The Violin player provided a great "voice" part that really impressed. The drummer was standard jazz fare and was tight the whole night keeping the group together, though the guitarist and the bass player probably could have alternated solos all night. If you are into heavy instrumentals, or are a bass or guitar player you will love these guys. The bass player used about every style and technique making up his own when he felt like it, definitely quick, Tony Levin beware! If you are in the Baltimore/Washington/Virginia area catch them live if you get a chance.

New CD ------ Ok, this post is beyond long, but this is it. I got a CD by a band called Angra last night, they have a great vocalist, kinda a mixing of styles several heavy metal songs, they cover a Kate Bush tune, really great stuff, I'll give a full review when I listen to it more.

Says me and any other musician who can read music and has read a lot of it including modern works (1994 for example). I can end this now. You provide me with an example of and non-multiple of 2 time sig (23/17, 16/9 etc) and I will rewrite it in standard notation, thereby proving that your oddball time sig is not neccessary. No one uses it. 0/0 for Cage's piece is incorrect. It would mean 0 notes per bar and a zeroth note gets the beat. But you need at least 1/1 (one beat per bar, whole note gets the beat) and a rest for 4'13". A common misconception among people learning to read is that a rest is not a note. It _is_ a note. When you see a rest you _play_ silence. It's not a time to get a cup of coffee. I can think of lines Flea plays that have lots of rests in them. I was teaching a student a tune (Funky Monks maybe? Can't remember) but she couldn't get it because she wasn't playing the rests.

I'm so happy to see someone besides me appreciates this band. This is a group that has continually gotten better and better (and less and less popular) with each subsequent album.

To the jammer inquiring about the symbol on the inside cover of LatM:

The little symbol looks like a Vindaloo--a pepper used to spice some god-awful drink. Not for the faint of heart. :) I believe a definition is also in the very well-done FAQ.

This is in response to the jammer who said that Geoff Tate was a falsettist<?> Please dont take this the wrong way, but WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?!?!? :) Yes, Geoff primarily sings in his head register, but there are some definite differences between head voice and falsetto. The falsetto is the light, airy register between the head reg. and something else called the "whistle tone" reg. in the human voice. <Some singers and voice teachers will argue that women have no falsetto, but I disagree.> For a singer to start in falsetto and crescendo to full volume, you can feel the "break" from falsetto to head reg. I'm not saying that it's not possible to have a very developed falsetto; look at Mandy Patinkin--a singer who has made quite a career out of singing in his falsetto, but has other very usable and powerful registers in his voice as well. Michael Crawford has an almost seamless transition from head to falsetto. Vince Gill sings a lot in falsetto, too. Countless soul singers. Someone retorted the original post saying that James was more of a falsettist than Geoff. Wrong! :) Most of what James does is in his chest register, or "real" voice, as some teachers put it.

I hope none of this seems flamatory, as that was not my intent. It's just that Tiny Tim is perhaps the world's most famous falsettist, and I just hate thinking that Geoff OR James have anything in common w/ his vocal style. :P

BTW: 16/9 is not a valid time sig unless you are making up your own musical notation, as someone already posted. 1/1, however, is perfectly valid in western music. 1 whole note per measure, when counting a whole note pulse. And John Cage's composition is called 4'33".

i believe that the Australian Aboriginies are the culture you refer too. check the spelling on that, though :) their Dream Time is, i think, drug induced though, not the natural act of dreaming. i saw a PBS thing on it a while back. pretty kool stuff.

course, i may be wrong. -john

    Brian,

Here's an answer for your question on Japnese edition LatM. The Japanese edition of "Live at Marquee" includes "Another Day" instead of "Surrounded" of UK edition. No extra track is there. The Price for LatM is 2,000 yen in Japan. And Both Ediions of LatM can be obtained easily in Japan.

    regards
