I don't know if this article has already been addressed, so
please disregard this message if it has.
I just renewed my subscription to Musician magazine, and lo and
behold, there's a 2-page picture and description of Petrucci's home
studio. It's in the May 1995 issue with Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard on the
cover. Anyway, it's a nifty picture, and I could only detect one error:
"his standard Universe [guitar]" was labeled as the custom 7-string. On
a lighter note, was this picture taken in Chicago? Oh well, gotta run,
I'm going to catch Urban Dance Squad in Cleveland tonight. Maybe I'll
see some of you at the Queensryche show in Toledo on 4/19.

                                                    Sincerely,

                                                    G. Jack Thetgyi

Hi Marc, my name is Andrew and I'm a fellow bass player and DT
fan. GUITAR WORLD's Andy Aledort transcribed "Erotomania" in
the January 1995 edition. There is a bass transcription
included. I'd be glad to send you a copy via snailmail if you
want to reply with an address.

BTW, a few months ago, I posted an informal and probably
incomplete listing of transcriptions and interviews in mags
that I've collected. FYI, somebody posted it to that ftp site
at netcom under the heading "tablist" or something to that
effect. My "mcgill.ca" email address listed there is wrong
however. The Delphi one is right. McGill University officially
has the worst internet access in all of Canada, if not the
world! But Delphi rules and I'm glad to be with them.

Anyway, Marc, from one b.p. to another let me know if you want
    that transcription. Best wishes, Andrew.

because the passion for Equality made vain the hope for
    Freedom.

Speaking of which, I strongly recommend this album to everyone.
I picked it up today at the used CD store in pristine condition.
Other than scanning through every track on the album before I
bought it (although I only had to listen to 30 secs. to know that
I had to have it), I only got to listen to 10 mins of it from
there to work. Brilliant musicianship these two (brothers, I
assume?) put into their music. Although I can't really classify
the sound, the closest I'd venture would be a lot harder hitting
Magellan style (speed Magellan?), but more guitar driven. Their
"covers" of Wagner's The Ride of the Valkrie and The William Tell
Overture are brilliant additions to an already perfect album.

Since I'll be driving all weekend, I'll get to know the disc
inside out and perhaps send Bill a note...

I also picked up Chasing Time at the store, too. However, it
was an import from the UK. Has this been released in the
States? Well, too late anyway, since I already bought it.
Although I think Broon's production on Parallels is a bit weak
for a five-piece band, the remix of WOSG isn't as good as the
original (even though it is harder-hitting). Now I appreciate
Terry Brown's job on the original better. At Fate's Fingers
is cool (although it's almost the same music as At Fate's
Hands), as is Circles (but this is a much better variation of
-dammit! I forget the name- [...] on Inside Out). They should've
forgotten about anything before NE and put Static Acts and
    Face the Fear on this.

    AFN...

    Hi!

I'm proud to announce that I'm now a fan of FATES WARNING.

Many thanks to all of you who recommended albums to buy, and to Jonas
Wallden who put up some sampled FW music on his Web-page for me.

It took a while to understand the greatness of FW, but it was all worth it.

    /Mats

I agree with whoever said the singer Mr. Soto from Yngwie J. Malmsteen's
rising force is really cool, but I'm glad he doesn't sing much, because I
like the playing better. By the way, whoever asked a loong time ago about
great mixed albums, Deliverance's Stay of Execution is the best I've heard.

That out of the way, lets get on to the real reason I'm here.

Someone asked about solos to scare a Van Halen fan. How about the
almost-completely two handed tapped Fortune in Lies solo. Erotomania?
Anyone have any personal absolute favorite DT solos? They're all great,
but I especially like the guitar solos in Under a Glass Moon and Scarred,
and the keyboard stuff on Only a Matter of Time and Take the Time. The
guitar solos are the most melodic I've heard from DT, and I like the sort
of slippery feel in each. I just saw the Japanese version of LatM today,
and the only difference I saw was that the back cover only has pictures
and song list, no copyright or Recorded At: information. The one I saw
also had a sleeve of Japanese information on it.

On the macho guitar player deal: I can play the chromatic part and the
solo from Caught in a Web, string skips and all. OOOh, wow! By the way, I
believe the verse for Surrounded is in 9/8, if that's what everyone is
talking about not or so progressive. I really don't care. I got into
Dream Theater because I heard they were progressive, but I just like it
because its the type of music I've been looking for forever, very
melodic, catchy, and fast and tricky. That's the same way I got into Rush
    and Yngwie.

Anyway...oh yeah, someone asked, sure I can play slow. Sort of.

I was just wondering if anyone had a close bass transcription of Learning
to Live. I really want to learn this song but do not have the time to
sit down and transcribe it all myself. Any help would be appreciated.

            It's also double-tracked. =)

So is "Rubicon" : 'Opportunity is yours" (actually, that's more
    likely triple-tracked)

    >Have you guys ever heard of that guy called JEFF SCOTT SOTO??
    >He sang on one (or two?) early Yngwie-records

Jeff also makes a guest appearance on Saigon Kick's debut album,
singing backups on a VERY beatlesque song called "My Life." I believe he
also sang on Chris Impelliteri's debut EP.

Graham Bonet sang on the 2nd, full length Impelliteri album (along with a
whole bunch of other LA metal band members...) Graham, formerly of
Alcatraz (sp) (who had a certain guitarist with the initials YM...hehe. It's a
small world, isn't it?), has recently joined forces with Bob Kulick
(brother of Bruce (of Kiss), who played some brilliant guitar on
W.A.S.P.'s THE CRIMSON IDOL album) in a band whose name I forget. Call
it the over 40 short hair/balding band. =)

Also, since a few people sent me email about Styx, I figure I'd
throw this in. I asked him what happened after Styx, and he told me he's
been writing a lot. So, he's definitely not in the band anymore.

And, in case you missed it, Dennis DeYoung was in a production of
Jesus Christ Superstar as Pontious (sp) Pilot. Consequently, he put an
album out called "10 On Broadway," a collection of show tunes.

So, Styx's whereabouts are a big question mark to me. =)
