William T. Dalton: bootlegs? Speak Of The Devil, sir! I hope my review of
CU helped somewhat in your decision-making.

Mike Bahr: yeah, isn't the scanner a wonderful thing? I mailed one of
those out to Jason Hartman, and hopefully I'll get some more out to other
Ytsejammers in the weeks to come. I am currently undertaking a cleaning-up
of the picture from the back of Live At The Marquee. Those photos are so
grainy... But I shall prevail! I also have the one that I sent you with a
different shot of the band, an "alternative" graphic if you will, which
will be mailed out the day the Subconscious cakes and 5-Disc pinata grace
my mailbox. (if you aren't Mike Bahr, you probably won't get that last
    line.)

It occured to me after writing that review of Consciously Unreal why
James' singing is the way it is, what with the cracking and all. He simply
refuses to sing in anything other than his chest-voice. The man was
obviously a samurai in a past life. His honor dictates that he shall not
go falsetto! EVER! To go falsetto is to admit vocal defeat! James LaBrie
shall not bow to the limits of normal chest-voices! He shall hone his
chest-voice and overcome the boundaries of human ranges and tones and belt
out the highest notes ever heard from a human throat, with power
equivalent to that of an elephant trumpet-blast!!

Yeah, I think that is why his singing is inconsistent, because there are
times when letting his tone go slightly to his head voice (let it all go
to his head?) would make his singing easier and clearer. But that is
obviously not what he wants to do. He pushes so hard to keep all his
singing in his natural voice that the vocal lines suffer sometimes. I
still think if he'd just relax a little or take a happy-potion before the
shows that his singing would go a lot smoother. Anyone? Anyone?

Whether it is good or not, it is only the insanely cheap person who
bitches about the quality of an essentially free tape. Look at it this
way: you pay only postage and price of a tape... if you don't like the
demo you have a prefectly good tape, and you're only out the price of
postage... no biggie! If you want my .02 cents worth on it, some songs
are indeed better than others, but *all* of them have parts worth
listening to, and learning from. Besides, it is Kevin Moore, someone I
want to support, someone I respect very much for trusting his fans enough
to *give* us copies of his work in progress, and it does make a really
neat (and very unique) addition to a collection. Just my .02 cents worth.

Good morning everyone, it's BABS. I know that I have been quiet about this
for a while, but I had to wait for a response from DT's management about
this. Here's the deal so far. As many of you know DT will be going over to
Germany in July and they are scheduled to be back in the recording studios in
June. Their management informed me today that they have met with the band
and they were able to speak with Mike P directly about the convention.
According to management he is very interested in checking out the convention.
Their management said that Mike's response was "if we are done recording at
that time/on that day, I am interesting in checking it out." That's all I
have so far. I will keep you posted! Does anybody want to sing Ren and
Stimpy's "Happy Happy, Joy Joy" with me?

Actually... I'd have to say that this is, in relative terms, one of
the worst DT aud CDs that I have heard... Listen to DoE and you'll
see what I mean... Actually, Skyway Of Nightmares and Live In Long
Island are worse... but CU, in terms of CD boots just can't cut it,
IMO... If you want to hear what an AUD recording can sound like,
listen to DoE, or Rush's Over The Europe for CD quality... Also,
check out some of Brian Cox's DATs... those are incredible quality.
As far as packaging goes, I though that it wasn't bad... until I saw
what any Why Not? or KTS CD packaging look like... These ones
sometimes put legit releases to shame...

As far as the person who asked about boot quality, and which to get,
I'd say the top 2 to get are:

Dance Of Eternity (2CD Why Not? SRL version, not 1CD version)
Lost In The Sky (2CD, Metal Blade/Why Not? SRL)

DoE is incredible quality and includes ACOS. LitS is soundboard w/
great song selction including Mission: Impossible, Afterlife, Puppies
On Acid, Barfbag, OAMOT, March Of The Tyrant and Eve.

After that, I'd say some of the FM KTS boots like Lords Of Sound and
Dream Out Loud as well as Majestic Harmonies (Metal Crash/Why Not).

Absolutely! I found them very much like Gentle Giant (one of their main influences); an aquired taste (pardon the GG pun :-). And seeing them live is what REALLY made me "see the light". Give 'em a chance. But if all you (pl., not you in particular Derek) like is heavy stuff, you probably won't like 'em.

Hey- They are a couple of ways to make a single guitar signal sound stereo. For instance, if you were to delay the signal slightly (to get it out of phase from the original), and pan the original all the way to one side and the delayed signal all the way to the other, it will sound (sort of) like 2 guitars. A stereo chorus effect on a single signal will do the same- sending 2 slightly different signals to the 2 channels. However, I like you believe that guitars were doubled on Awake.

Does anybody know the status of whether they will come back in the summer and tour again?

Bernd. I don't know how many guitar tracks are on it but it's not unlikely that the guitar is doubled. He probably just played it twice. Otherwise, he could have recorded onto two tracks at one time so he's have the exact same part doubled but then you wouldn't hear a discrepancy in the two sides. Some other engineering type can correct me if I'm wrong but when a band records, the put all the stuff on seperate tracks - bass on track 1, guitar on track 2, etc. They might have 24 tracks or more. Then they mix it down to a stereo recording (one track all mixed). When they mix down, they can pan so that guitar 1 is left and guitar 2 is right.

    hope this helps

    Oh, jeez...

Ya'll with your Hot Sticks shit...

I believe I've made a mistake. The stick that Mike gave me has been M.I.A. for quite sometime - I think it's in a box in my room that I am unaware of the location of...but, anyway, it MIGHT be a Power Tool Stick. It is, however PURPLE, thus, the mistake.

Besides, I'm not a drummer - I play bass/guitar/keyboards and sing, but, I am not a drummer. I can program a drum machine, and maybe keep a straight 4/4 beat on my band's drummer's kit, but, that's it. =)

In either case, I hope you all stop whining. -Hairball

This is an answer to Bernd's question about the John Petrucci's guitar tracks. Most of the tracks are doubled (I'm not sure how many times). Doulbling a guitar track usually makes it sound heavier (at least distorted tracks). The effect of having doubled tracks is more noticable if they are slightly different. It's the small differences in the two tracks that make it "bigger." Doubling only works well with guitars and vocals. This has to do with whats called the harmonic overtone series (I won't explain it now, but if you must know just email me). It's also why you don't see many bands with six bass players. The problem with just splitting one track into two is that the impact is lost, since the tracks are just mirror images of each other. You may think that if doubling sounds better, than having ten guitar tracks would be great, but this is not the case. Although with modern recording technology this is possible, you may run into a problem called phase cancellation. This happens when you have so much of certain frequencies that they cancel each other out. Your guitar orchestra would turn to mush. There are ways in the studio to keep the tracks separated, but there is a point where adding more tracks wouldn't help any.

    Enough with the physics lesson

    Later, Sean

If you like those albums you should try their 3rd, "Safety in Numbers", which is my favorite album of theirs (I have heard one song off that album on Baltimore radio). You may also want to try "Animal Notes" which is their 2nd album and is not bad. "Safety and Numbers" and "Animal Notes" also come together on one CD so you may want to keep an eye out for it.

I'm a new Yjammer (since Digest 786), but I've listened to Progressive since the early 70's. Does that make me old? Just a few comments on what I've read so far in the digests:

    >791 ..Also the last line of Metropolis: Love is the Dance of Eternity

And the last line of Corinthians 13: And now these three remain, faith hope and love, but the greatest of these is love

Also recall the line in Metropolis immediately proceeding the one quoted above. 'Faith, Hope and Love'. Isn't this also the name of an album by DT's managereal stablemates, King's X ? Also KX's 'Out of the Silent Planet' , part of the C.S. Lewis' 'Space Trilogy' ?

By the way, since there seem to be some Extreme addicts among the Yjammers, what do YOU think 'The Truth,' from '3 Sides to Every Story' means?

    ------------------------------

What about progressive violinists who can 'play like guitarists': Jerry Goodman (check out the alternating solos with John McLaughlin and Jan Hammer on Mahavishnu Orchestra's 'Birds of Fire'), Also David LaFlamme ('It's a Beautiful Day:' White Bird, etc.), Jon-Luc Ponty (also played with Mahavishnu and Alan Holdsworth), Robby Steinhardt (sp?), Kansas, and Eddie Jobson (U.K. and Jethro Tull). Arent't the 'pedigrees' of many progressive artists interesting? Alot of the progs have played/recorded with other progs at one time or another.

On 789: Asia, these guys have been around a long time, although are any of the originals lefts? They seem to have all gone back to their old bands (Yes, ELP, etc.).

On 791: With Fripp, Belew, Levin and Bruford, is it possible for King Crimson to make a BAD album? Of course if its too good, it'll probably scare (simple-mided) people away; but isn't true of almost all Progressive music?

On 790:On ex-Kansan (?) John Elephante. I saw him a few years ago with his band called Mastadon (good and loud, almost collapsed my chest). He has also formed a production company called ... get this ... 'Pachyderm Records' with his brother Dino (Do I sense a trend in names here or what?)

Also, for he who asked: Leftoverture and Point of Know Return are, in my opionion, the creme of Kansas' albums, although I stress that all Kansas is good.

For anyone interested, the quotation in my signature is from a book by Ayn Rand, who, as I have heard, had a significant influence on the much-read Neal Peart and the lyrics on Rush's '2112' (Ask Uncle Joe at KLOS (Los Angeles, 95.5 FM).

Ready? This message makes up for all the DT content in my previous message by having no DT content whatsoever!

Before I go on, I would like to say that the Smashing Pumpkins are one of the only alternative bands that I like, and that I like them for their music, not their popularity(I had their albums before their big radio debut). I think they are good songwriters and while not nearly as talented as DT, they make some nice music to listen to. So...

I was listening to Rush the other day and it got to "Force Ten" where he says "Skin as thick as these... thick as these"(or something like that.. I have Chronicles, so no lyrics) Yeah, anyway, I was thinking "Where did I hear that before?" and I realized in "La Dolly Vita"(B-side) by SP, he sings the line "Skin as thick as these". Has anyone else noticed this? Or are they only lyrics that sound the same but have different words? I also remember reading an article in Bay Area Music (I think) about how at one SP concert the lead singer began reciting Rush lyrics on stage. Could SP be big fans of Rush? Hmmm....

Subject says it all, folks...I ran across a bootleg CD copy of Y Kant Tori Read, and since there has been so much discussion here as of late, I thought I'd pick it up for anyone who wants it. Tracks are: Big Picture/Cool on your Island/Fayth/Fire on the Side/Pirates/Floating City/Heart Attack at 23/On the Boundary/You go to my Head/Etienne Trilogy plus Ode to the Banana King (Part I), Song for Eric, Happy Phantom (live), and a couple of other songs they listed as "Bonus tracks." There is no doubt that this is a bootleg, but if anyone is interested, email and I'll see if I can grab it for you. I'll give you the same price that the store has it listed for.

Okay, this is a follow-up of a message posted a few days ago by someone else concerning Erotomania. This is what I think it means:

A Mind Beside Itself, I'm guessing, is probably about someone trying to overcome his desires of either stalking someone else, or having an affair or something with someone else. My basis of judgement? Well, first of all the first song is titled "Erotomania"(explained earlier) The person in this trilogy has strong sexual desires for either the someone he's stalking, or the someone he's having an affair with. "Voices" I think has something to do with voices compelling this person to give up his desire and other voices telling the person to pursue the desire. For example: "Love, just don't stare", "Should I turn on my religion? These demons in my head tell me to", etc, etc. A battle between good and sin. There are many more passages in the song that hint at this as well. The mood of the music also seems to fit. And at the end of the song, I guess this person gives up his desire or something "This neverworld that you desire is only in your mind" Then,(I'm not sure about this part) this person decides to "remain silent" and not pursue the sin, hence "The Silent Man" and also the lighter, more pleasant tone of music. So what do you guys think? There are probably plenty more interpretations of this song; just here to tell you mine. I've got interpretations of many other DT songs, too. On Awake, I probably understand the meaning of The Mirror the best. I might post my interp later on.. Does anyone else have any? Please post them as I haven't figured out the meanings of many DT songs. Many DT songs might have been written only to sound lyrically beautiful and not have a deeper meaning, but anyway..

Oh, and musically speaking about AMBI, you've probably all noticed the Silent Man theme within Erotomania(in the middle-end), but have you guys heard the Erotomania theme within Voices? I'm telling you this because I just realized it a few weeks ago. It's in the part where the Prix-Mo guy is saying "You got to know who you're dealing with, because like a stranger, it's like coming through here with a gun". You can hear the opening guitar-bass theme of Erotomania in the background.(As I remember, I think it's played by keyboard) Cool, huh?

While I'm on the subject of Awake themes, the beginning of The Mirror is played again toward the end of Lie(the heavy guitar triplets) and the end of The Mirror is also done again at the end of Lie(the high sounding keyboard bells). This is understandable since the songs are connected, but did anyone else hear "Space-Dye Vest" at the end of The Mirror?

Oh yeah, you know what else I've noticed? When Kevin writes lyrics, he tends to base it more on rhyme, and structure while JP writes based on story and not as much for rhyme and structure. They're both extremely good songwriters. Just thought I'd point that out.

That's about it. FULL of DT content, eh? Maybe I've been listening a bit too much...

To all those who doubt that Mike plays Hot Sticks:

    I have one.

It's purple, has his signature on it, and the Dream Theater logo (and M). And yeah, he plays with the other end, that's the end that's ruined.

Thanks everyone for your replies inquiring about DT tab and magazine articles! It was a manageable number of replies, so I think I can accommodate them all. I will be responding in a short time by email to those of you who made requests to let you know when to expect your copies. Unfortunately, I don't have an OCR scanner or anything, so I'll be providing photocopies via snailmail for the time being.

For those of you who missed YTSEJAM Digest #793, I posted a list of DT magazine tablature and articles that I have collected over time. Please email if you would like the list. An outdated list appears at the anonymous FTP-site "ftp.netcom.com".

This is going to be a pretty heavy week for me, so I would appreciate your patience. I will get these requests out very shortly.

Final reminder: My original purpose in compiling this list is so that DT fans have an information RESOURCE. That is, a register of items that can be consulted for the inquiring fan or musician (or likely both!) I don't mind sending out these copies, but it would be nice if people would let me know if they come across items on their own and feel that the group can benefit. I have seen discussion about DT appearances in regional magazines, like the Portnoy drum set description in a Baltimore area mag for example. That kind of thing.

Great hearing from you all!! I'll be in touch with each of you individually.

    Best Regards, Andrew.

Nevermind my other message about Rush/SP. I went back to listen to "La Dolly Vita". He sings "She has given me", not "Skin as thick as these". Same difference. Anyway, sorry for the false alarm. I'm pretty sure about Billy Corgan reciting Rush lyrics on stage, tho'.

Man I'm so excited! I just got a Concert video in the mail. It's Dream Theater Live in Urawa, Saitama, Japan. It's supposedly a Japanese pay/view special that was aired live on January 24, 1995. Awesome! They played every song off _AWAKE_ EXCEPT for "Innocence Faded", "Scarred", and "Space dye vest".

They also played "Pull me under", "Another Day", "Take the time", and they played "Metropolis" for an encore. Mike Portnoy did his drum solo during the instrumental section of CiaW. Half way through the show everyone sang Happy Birthday for John Myung. They even brought out a cake. There was a 15 second period of silence to remember those who died in the earthquake. Right after that they went into "The Silent Man". By the way, the new guy, Derek Sherinian was playing the keys on this video. He's pretty good and I'm very impressed by his skill.

Anyways, let me apologize to everybody if you've already heard about this video. I'm probably the zillionth person to write about it. Sorry eh. I'm just so thrilled about this video.
