I agree with Erotomania@aol.com's comments. I don't have long hair for an
image thing (well, it started out that way when I was 17 and started
growing it because I was in a metal band), it's just that I like having
long hair and everyone says I look good with long hair. I am too afraid to
cut it off, because if I choose to grow it again it will go through that
scruffy looking phase where you can't tidy it up!
When I wear it down (which is hardly ever now) I get compliments from
strangers in the street and even one offer of money to cut it for a wig!
My current girlfriend who I have been seeing for around 2.5 years likes my
hair and she tries to make me wear it down whenever we go out together.
She doesn't go out with short haired men.
Anyway, my hair is my statement of my individuality, and serves no other
purpose except for headbanging along to PMU, the Metropolis intro, Mirror,
    Lie or AFIL.

ENOUGH RAMBLING, ON WITH THE JAM!!!

    Good day.

Just a few comments about the last post:

To Craig Newmeyer: I believe the singer from Blind Melon urinated on the
crowd in Vancouver, B.C. I guess it was his way of saying he appreciated
    Canada. (I'm from Canada)

To Machiel Masland: This is not a flame, but the Elton John track that is
going to be on ACOS (Funeral For a Friend-Love Lies Bleeding) is a great
song! Probably the closest to prog that Elton ever came. If you like DT's
version, you might want to check out Elton's version on Goodbye Yellow Brick
Road. Now, I admit most of Elton's stuff since the 70's is quite wimpy,
but that particular album is quite good. I'm looking forward to hearing it.

Also, the price of the new CD will be a bit cheaper, at least in Canada. I
have a copy of the release sheet with me and the suggested list price is
about 5 dollars cheaper than usual. Not that we would pay more if we had to!

For all the Canadian DT fans out there, the tentative release date according to
Warner Music is September 19. If anyone has a hard time finding it, get in
touch with me. I manage a record store, so whatever I can do to help!

    See ya

Alright, fellow jammers... here's the answers to my trivia questions.

Most guitars used in one song and how many?
Six separate guitars in Innocence Faded

And the least <not surprisingly> was Caught In A Web with only 1.

Most meter shifts in one song and which song was it?
Erotomania with a total of 57 shifts.

Someone asked for the least shifts? That's "The Silent Man" which has no shifts
    at all.

Total meter shifts on Awake? 219 <222 for John P., which ties in with the next
    question:

What is the weirdest time signature in any song on Awake?

    Hint: It's a 2-way tie plus a 3rd REALLY off-the-wall time count. <So, the are 3
    songs>
Another hint: The "off-the-wall" time count occurs when John is using the
    7-string.

    Later....

    Hello to you all,

It is such a long time since I haven't been on the Internet... It is good to
be back school and back on the ystejam.
I will ask something that may appear strange to the every day readers of the
ytsejam digest but does someone know if there is a US tour that is planned.
I have learned that they will play in Japan in the end of October (Osaka on
the 26th, Tokyo on the 28th) and I wonder what the band will do until this
Japanese Tour. If someone has an answer...

That is all for now. Read you soon...

I am disappointed about the covers that are being included on ACOS. I
really wanted to hear the U.K! The Yes medley, "Winter", and "Tears"
would have been great as well. Oh well - It also sucks that "To Live
(Forever)" and "Eve" are not included. You know what else sucks?
DT and FW did not tour anywhere near the Southeastern U.S. Ahhhhhhhh!
At least I saw QR twice. What a show!

Anyway, i'm glad "In The Flesh" is on ACOS. INFERNO has been playing
that song for years.... Great fun! (much easier than doing a DT cover).

    Take care,

    Olde Triviae Answers:

Before their short stint with Yes on 'Drama', Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes
recorded under what another name?; What (in)famous song was this group most
    well known for, and why?

---Yes, it was the Buggles, the song was 'Video Killed the Radio Star' and
it was the video that basically was the inspiration for eMpTV. Geoff
Downes, I believe is still, trying to make a go with Asia, while Trevor
Horn is motly involved in production work, including later Yes CD's, and
Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells 2' CD.

Thanks, I was unaware of the 'Into the Lens'--'I Am a Camera' tie.
BTW, I've always be intrigued by the meter on the intro to 'Into the
Lens', its different. Anyone have info on that; I've actually never tried
to figure it out, and my copy of the album is in storage, and not readily
    accessible.

Who replaced Alan Holdsworth & Bill Bruford in UK? (Hint: names(s) have
    appeared in numerous recent JAMs.)

---Yes, Terry Bozzio replaced Bruford, no one replaced Alan Holdsworth,
basically went from a 4-piece to a 3-piece band. I saw the latter
configuration when they opened a show in Fresno for Jethro Tull. They did
mostly stuff from the 'Danger Money' album; on the stuff from The UK album,
Jobson did the leads on keys or violin. Jobson did a great electric violin
solo on his clear plastic (acrylic?) violin; with backlighting, you could
see that he was really shredding his bow (literally). It is interesting
that Eddie Jobson was a "special guest artist" for JT on the next album ,
'A', and tour. (JT's Stormwatch album was actually before A, but that went
somewhat with the live 'Bursting Out' album/tour, which was the one I saw.

    New Trivia Questions:

Got a number of requests for 'hard' 'Yes' trivia questions: OK, I have a
multi-parter that I'll have to give out in pieces, else it may not make
sense, or some of the clues may give the answers away; believe it or not,
if played out to the end, this trivia set ultimately has direct ties to DT.

Question Part one: What band was Patrick Moraz in before doing keys on
Yes' 'Relayer' album/tour. From what previous band did the other members
of Moraz' earlier band come from; which progressive rock icon was also
from that earlier band? What was the name of the band that Moraz was in
BEFORE the above mentioned earlier band? In which progressive band did
    Moraz play AFTER Yes?

Another really unrelated Yes question that comes from the Moraz era with Yes:
Name all five solo projects that all the then current members of Yes
    recorded during this era.

---Also mentioned in earlier JAM threads were the performances of Yanni and
other 'progessive' artist on PBS, especially during pledge breaks. My
local PBS station (Fresno area) will be showing this FRIDAY, the 18th, a
'Kitaro' video (many raves in past JAMS for him; K also did some recordings
which included vocals by Yes' Jon Anderson (JA also did a number of albums
with Vangelis)). Also 'Manheim Steamroller' will follow immediately after
Kitaro (if you like their variety of classic-jazz-rock fusion). Be on the
lookout on your own PBS stations, if you're interested.

---On the left-handed drummer thread, I originally asked about left-handed
musicians, not just drummers; thanks for the answers so far (also the one
other on keys). I've comtemplated this recently: most musical instruments
are really right-hand oriented, unless you get one specifically made for
    lefties.

---To Mike Kizer, per his requested cover info on JAM 916: __although I
knew the answer to most of his questions, I guessed on some. I will not be
offended if corrected/flamed on these. Most of my posts come straight from
the cranial substance, although I do try to double-check my trivia
    questions with other sources.

--Last: the ACOS EP is on the Elektra label ?
I earlier asked the following question on bands/labels relationships, but
really got no answer Maybe this time....

    Question: WHAT IS the relationship between a band and their record company;
i.e. DT IAW was on ATCO, while Awake is on Eastwest Records. Whatever,
both are subsidiaries of Atlantic Records, which again is a subsidery (sp?,
no dictionary on hand, and I.m too lazy to get it) of WEA
(Warner-Atlantic-Elektra) which again is part of the Time-Warner
conglomerate.. Who does what and who actually is in charge of promoting
the band, their tours, albums, etc. I have seen this 'everchanging record
company thread within the same umbrella conglomerate' before. For you that
know, please enlighten the rest of us.
BTW, according to the label on my Fate's Warning "Parallels' CD, Metal
Blade recordings are released through Reprise, which is also part of WEA.
Is this true of all Metal Blade releases?

    To All:

Hello everyone, been awhile for me to post on something here! Most of
the time I am just lurking keeping to myself cause it seems everytime I
post I get flamed or start some big riot on the jam!?! Don't know why that
is, but... As an example, I started that UGLY Type O Negative thing a few
months back, by speaking my own opinion on my dislike of the fact that
they were opening for QR. Anyway here goes...

    On the hair thing:

I used to have hair about 2 inchs past my waist and thicker than anyone I
have ever run into, male or female (my brother Jason can verify this). I cut
it because I grew out of the wanting to be a rock star phase and it was so
heavy that it gave me headaches. When I had long hair I would get compliments
on it all the time, women would hit on me just about everywhere I went, and
99% of guys passing me on the freeway thought I was a girl. It was alot of fun,
but also a major pain in the ass. But, I do think that women whom I went out
with for one night or 3 years definitley were more interested in my look than
what was inside. Either that or women who do date guys with long hair are
just more forward than women who don't.

To the guy who hasn't got a date in a year after cutting his hair off, this
    is my
perfect example of the type of women who go out with guys with long hair.
When I cut my hair off, the whistling (sp?) stopped, the phone numbers in
shopping bags stopped, the one night stands stopped, and when my ex and
I broke up I didn't go on a date for 7 months! But, now I have met someone
who I plan on spending the rest of my life with. I am in no way saying that
women who go out with long hair guys are sluts or are not as good as women
who don't, just from my personal experience they are more forward in letting
whomever they want to go out with know their feelings. Not all, but alot.

    Other questions:

Awhile ago I posted a message up looking for a ftp or www site where lyrics
were available for downloading. I got one address of "ftp.ocf.berkeley.edu"
and I used it once and got the lyrics I wanted at the time, but I tried it again
last night and it did not work. Is this address correct or is there another
    one?

The cover songs that are on ACOS, what albums are these
off of? Can anyone maybe trade a tape of the original versions with me?

I always hear mention of other prog bands on here but I have never heard any
of there music. I am a metal/hard rock fan, have been since getting Kiss Alive
when I was 7. I am 24 now. I don't really get into stuff like Marillion, Yes,
Genesis, etc. (No flames please just my personal taste) Which prog bands are
more in the QR/DT vein of music? What is recommended? Two that always
draw attention to me are Echolyn and King Crimson but I don't know? HELP!

Sorry if I pissed anyone off. Sorry for the length.

Here's a question about the Ronnie Scott's, for you people who have
tapes of it. What songs are on it that are NOT on the ACOS EP. What's
    the XOR setlist?

Now knowing that, I think it would be a good idea to distribute this
on tape to the fellow ytsejammers, cause I know I'd like a copy (for
the Marillion and Yes tracks which I'm pissed aren't on the EP), though
it would be even cooler if the rest of the space were taken with other
cool missing tracks, like At Fates Fingers w/ Kevin Moore, the Eve and
TLF that we'll never see in the US, maybe some live tracks with Derek
playing (I still haven't heard Derek but if he's in DT I know there's
going to be a big demand for his playing ala Kevin's playing way back).
Kind of a subconscious II, I guess. I'd do it myself if I had the source
and the equipment (don't even have a two-tape deck).

Hell, if anyone wants to trade such with me I have lots of prog CDs you
maybe want a sample of, but anyone think this might be a cool ytsejam
    tree?

    ----

Anyway, on the silly hair thing. This is a debate?!? With name calling and everything? Over hair??? I can't help grinning. Who cares? I used to have long hair, now I have a crew cut, I looked disgusting then and still look disgusting now cause hair is such a small part of the body you're born with. It doesn't matter, save that I fit the dress code for my high-paying job bagging groceries, but that's society not reality.

I'm sorry, I entered the debate too. I'm bored, I'll shut up now.

Hi, all. Just a few things...

Drkhoe's nose hairs are cool! I laughed my ass off when I saw that! Personally, I prefer to grow and style the hairs in my armpits, but to each his own...

I love the whole argument on hair. It began when someone didn't get a joke, and it's grown into something hysterical. I love when there's nothing to talk about. I guess this won't end until ACoS is released!

Well, I don't play Magic: The Gathering, but I do play The Star Trek: The Next Generation card game, which is similar. Anyone else?

i realize in retrospect that i was probably asking for all the responses i got, but my god some people are over sensitive. (but i still think it is hypocritical to tell me i'm shallow and then attack my punctuation and capitalization.) i know i started it, so i shouldn't complain. take what you give, but i'd like to apologize to those of you whom i offended. finally, i realize this isn't the place for a debate about hair length or management so back to DT.

Hey there, I've fallen behind on a few digests, but happened to catch a request for Jason's address, so I paged back through the recent issues and found Brian's post.

If any of you haven't heard Cacophony/Friedman/Becker, you've got to check them out - talent through and through down to their backup band members (fine Schrapnel studio musicians). Fast and slow, straightforward and full of time changes, yet still both heavy and melodic, with about a fifty-fifty instrumental/vocal mix. Righteous stuff, indeed!

Friedman's solo album "Dragon's Kiss" and Becker's solo "Perpetual Burn" are more in the vain of their Cacophony stuff, while Friedman's new solo work (post-Cacophony) "Scenes" is a little more subdued and exploratory (being more ambient and classical), with fellow Megadeth member Nick Menza and Kitaro - way tasty! And I see that he has another recent release that I have yet to pick up and listen to.

You can't go wrong with any of their stuff; and by the sounds of this article about the new release from Jason, this one's gonna be cool!

I happened to catch two shows Cacophony did here in Minneapolis supporting their second release (and after the release of their two solo releases - so I was able to get all four discs at the gig) - AMAZING! If you think Petrucci is fun to watch play, these guys were a trip! The most synchronized playing I've ever seen - and they did it live, too! A joy to watch/listen to! :)

Does anyone have or know of any audio/video boots of any Cacophony shows? PLEASE let me know. Thanks!

Sorry, if this is on twice, but it should probably already be in a recent JAM digest. I've had another post to the JAM that apparently got lost in cyberspace

I picked up the Shadow Gallery CD just before I went to the _Live_ concert Sun. (they were awesome! although I was in the minority being male and over 18 !>)>.

Anyway, I highly recommend this disc. Those who miss the keyboards in DT will definitely like it. At times, they sound like a DT ripoff, but their vocal melodies and style are completely different (sometimes like _Europe_, what ever happened to those guys?). _Heavily_ key-oriented. I like it a lot, most of it is very beautiful. It sounds a little like the lost DT album (you know--- the one between WDADU and IAW? The select few of us that have a demo of this album know what I mean).

I'm adopted, too! (We are legion) Native, Shoshoni- Bannock (at least 1/4, could be more)/Scottish (Duncan Clan)/Italian (perhaps). I'm not registered, though, since my birth mother was adopted, too (off the reservation) and she died when I was in foster care (2 yrs. old). I guess I'll have to make that Idaho trip to do the geneological research...

About long hair... what about those of us who are the opposite!? Jen and Keith and Jarrod (and some others) know, having met me.

Also picked up Echolyn (still listening, reminds me of Kansas, perhaps King's X (the vocal harmonies)) and the latest Faith No More (I like this better). I've been listening to them at work, since Shadow Gallery hasn't really left my car's system.

IGTAFN, I needed to get it all out of the way before the #%^*$! fileserver goes down again.

    Zach

p.s. just kidding about the missing DT album, that was a nasty troll
