Like someone told me some time ago---

"There are three ways in which you judge a person:

    First, by how they look,
    Second, by what they say,
    Third, by what they do."

    Unfortunately, always in that order,
since that only reliable criterion is #3.

okok, like everyone else, i wasn't gonna step into this...but...wtf ;)

    >backward thinking. Just because I grew my hair longer doesn't make me any
    >different than I was before.

well, having long hair (see it at: http://www.site.gmu.edu/~jjens/john.html)
has indeed made me different than when i had short hair. i'm now *much*
poorer do to the fact that i go through a bottle of shampoo and conditioner
every 2 weeks. this stuff ain't cheap, folx. (btw, i'm gathering my notes
and starting "John's HairKare Tips and Discussion" which will soon be on the
web at a URL to be determined later). as i was saying, shampoo and
conditioner ain't cheap. plus add in a new hair-brush every other month or
so; a package of pony-tailers every couple months (i've had the one i'm
using right now for over 6 months!! it's amazing how fast these lil buggers
    get lost); plus other accessories...

    >As for cutting my hair to get a date? Not unless you're Cindy Crawford!
    >(Ha, ha, ha. That's a little humor there...not a flame, Elise.)

nah. even Cindy can kiss my ass. i'm not cutting my hair for anybody except
me. good thing my GF of 4.5 years likes it ;)

AMEN! my fellow long-haired brother and to the rest of yous long-hairs out
    there :)

There was a post earlier by someone making up a progressive
compilation tape with numerous tracks by prog/metal artists (one of
the bands to be included was Atlanta's own Early Warning, who BTW have
now found a new bassist :)). Could that person please e-mail me; Dave
Re of EW is interested in acquiring a copy (as am I). He has no
problem, really, with EW being included, but would rather have been
    asked first..... :)

EastWest Records was recently "merged" with Elektra, according to Mike
Hardy at Elektra (I called about the end of the US tour and the next
Southeastern bookings for DT). I -really- hope this means that, with
Elektra's muscle behind DT, we can see some actual album promotion for
ACoS and the new studio album, slated for 1996 (again per Mr. Hardy).
I'm not holding my breath, but Elektra does have some moxie in the biz
-- more than EastWest alone, anyway...

PLEASE READ THIS - ALL YTSEJAMMERS - even just take a quick look.

    Hiya jammers.

A relatively long time ago when I first got into music/bands/musicians I've been presented with various musicians and music styles. I've started listening to a lot of bands and flew into the metal scene almost naturally. Then I got interested in other things - could be as a need to progress. I have a certain hierarchy in my mind as to different styles and their specific nature and spirit. Some styles of music are more complex some are very simple. I (as a lot of DT fans) was attracted to a certain level of complexity - as I was searching for something more interesting, more stimulating - more AWESOME.

And why do I say all of this shit?

Let me explain then: I have had a few chances to hear DT bootlegs where the guys are instrumentaling/improvising, usually JP would have his solo part(s) and Kevin moore (back in his time) would also have a solo - usually a smaller portion. (Unfortunantly I haven't got an awake bootleg not to mention a bootleg with derek, so..). Sometimes even the bass king JM would come up with a solo. And here is the flaw (I couldn't find a better word) DT has or it is more appropriate to say DT players have.

Back to what I said at the beginning - There are musical styles or areas that have a certain specific nature where a player is presenting his or her personality through the music he performs. The player is virtually singing through the instrument. Some of the greatest spiritual players of all times are known for their incredible ability to instantly be recognized through the music - for instance: I would recognize Jazz Pianist/Keyboardist Chick Corea immediately because of the personality he transfers through the music and to the listeners. And regarding the bass (and this is the area where I would most probably KNOW what I'm talking about) I would recognize the great musician/bass player John Patituci immediately because of his distinctive sound/melodies/musical ideas. In these musicians improvisation the work of years and years of developing a musical distinctiveness (?!) is shown.

And now I'll go back to DT: I'll take John myung because again the Bass is my field: I've had the fortune to hear a nice (as always) instrumental passage by DT - where after a couple of JP solos and a KM solo John Myung took a few bars to himself and shamelessly soloed in a primitive, redundant, uninteresting way. He WAS NOT on top of his music - in fact, he was struggling very hard to make out anything clear with this solo. I was ashamed. This rather short, ridiculous solo was a sign of an area in john's music he had given up or had yet to develop in.

Dream Theaters songs are INCREDIBLE! UNBELIEVABLE! AWESOME! each player takes the music further! put his own flavors! You can see absolutely amazing riffs by John Myung on all I&W and also on awake (Innocence faded etc.). But when John was out there trying to take a whole segment to himself - he failed. Badly. The music he presented was dull, and badly organized.

I would not talk about John Petrucci - but I must say he has similar problems: He has distinctive sound, but on solos like PMU,AD,Lie and more he is acting in a robotic way - not able to transfer his own spirit into the music and only does what you can call - nice fast scales with landing on the right notes... KM is better then these both.

I take comfort in JP's UAGM solo. Amazing. A brilliant display of feel. which is connected AGAIN to the spirit issue.

Sometimes I hear solos that can easily be JP's but are other players'. His style is not as distinctive as - Al Dimula, Greg Howe, Frank Gambale etc.

That's the way I see it. Maybe I'm quite different in my perception - and then again maybe not.

This is the musical area. There are no doubts about the lyrics. DT's lyrics are - so inspiring in their originality, Complexity etc. The songs are well built on the lyrical side. No doubt.

    I'm sorry.

    Aviad Hay.

    Hi all,

I tried to post this a day or two ago, but I think it got lost in cyberspace, so here it goes again...

A while back, I mentioned that I'm trying to put together a complete list of all the DT setlists that have been played. A few people have responded (and my many thanx to them), but I could still use more help. Something that I've thought about is getting back issues of the 'jam and going through them (tedious as it may be); however, I don't know how to do this, so I'm asking anyone to please give me some idea of how or where to get them (I do have web access, so that's not a problem). Thanx in advance.

Hehe...You expected less from a recording engineer? =) Really nicely textured, they are. ==========================

    >Oh well...at least [Blind Mellon is] gone now and DT's not! (At least I hope they're gone)

Unfortunately, they're not. They're back, with a new album. I heard the first single about two weeks ago. It was nothing to write home about.

    ============================

    >I really don't think Mili-Vanili had "cute" hair. It was kinda long so > that was cool, but I didn't really like it. Too much stuff in it.

Well, what do you expect for hair weaves/extentions?

    To paraphrase a quote:

"Is that their hair?" "Sure is...and they have the receipt to prove it!"

    ============================= Quoting Mark R.:

    >What's up with a smidgen of success and a chick-in-a-damn-bee-outfit >video that makes these dumb asses wanna put down other bands in an >interview in a national magazine?

As much as they hate metal, they could've learned a great deal from Quiet Riot vocalist Kevin DuBrow. After DuBrow's comments in that VERY SAME MAGAZINE, about various people's records, in that same "Listening Room" sales of their 2nd U.S. album, "Condition Critical" plummetted. This was part of what contributed to QR sales going down the toilet.

And, what's even MORE hilarious is that BM (haha, perfect acronym, eh?) didn't even WANT the record company to release that song...and they stopped playing it in concert.

I remember Petrucci's comments, vaguely. Something to the effect of, "We're definitely not a bunch of stuffy prog-rockers who condemn something if it's not in [insert odd time signature here]."

'matter o' fact, when I did that phone interview with Mike, he told me he'd been to a Rollins Band show the night before. =)

    >The only thing I know about my biological parents is that my mother was >a mostly-German college student in Iowa. My adoptive mother is 100% >Italian and my adoptive father is French/Irish. I think that I am mostly confused!

I don't know about my biological parents' heritage. I do know, however, that my father was a drummer. =) (Don't know if I mentioned that...) In any event, it's really in the genes! I just wish they'd let me start on them in elementary school. Then again, I might not've learned to play piano, guitar or bass...or even sing.

    Everything has its purpose.

========================= Oh, and for you Arizonans -

I talked to my friend at KKFR who urged me to send him a new resume. They've finally got a program director in place, and he's telling him that he needs help producing the night show, and assistance in his duties as the station's Music Director. =)

Now, if I can get PAID for it, I'm THERE!

Still, this is a bit premature. I will keep you Arizona types posted.

We'll get together, and I'll grill up some Philly Steaks. =)

OOH, that reminds me of a trivia question! =)

Actually, I believe the truth of this story is that the hidden track is on the Korean Version of Images and Words. I asked the Atlantic rep locally here about it a couple of years ago while researching info for the FAQ, and he said it was possible, but he didn't have any idea how to come across a copy; apparently Korean releases are handled by a different branch of WEA than the Euro/Japanese releases.

    But, since I haven't actually seen/heard this CD myself, I can't say it's true...

I guess I can agree with Aviad in a little way. I don't think JP has found his own sound fully yet. For example, in Erotomania, I am constantly hearing elements of Vai, Morse, and Satriani and to a small extent, Malmsteen. I do disagree about the solo in Lie, especially the second one. That is the first thing that attracted me to the song. It's not the speed of the solo, as fast solos don't really mean much to me. That second solo fits so well with the rest of the song. It makes a perfect ending. I consider the shortend version of Lie deficient, because it doesn't have the solo.

Give him some time. I think in the next couple of albums, he will find his own unique sound. I can hear it beginning now, and it will only get stronger.

    IMHO

    Later,

    Dave

In case someone hasn't posted it, here is John Petrucci's response to Blind Melon in GftPM:

"In a recent 'Listening Room' [GftPM, Jan '94], Blind Melon guitarist Christopher Thorn reacted to the Dream Theater single "Pull Me Under" and its musicianship with pure vitriol, starting a tirade that culminated in the blanket statement, "That sort of guitar playing is just stupid!" Considering the bluntness of his statements, we thought we'd relate the the incident to Petrucci and ask for any response he might care to give to his six-string colleague's comments. Here goes: "I find it really weird that sombody would say that about me or Dream Theater because a couple ofguys in the band are into Smashing Pumpkin, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and the like. It's just the same crap I heard at Berkelee, where you had the jazzers versus the rockers, who always argued and fought with each other. Without sounding too idealistic, it's all music and hopefully there is a quality in all styles that can reach you. Condemning another genre is something that I would never do. And for the record, the members of Dream Theater are definitely not stuffy prog-rockers who condemn songs if they're not in 9/8 time. That's ridiculous! We're into all different styles. I listen to a lof of different things myself: classical music from Beethoven, Bartok, and Ravel, jazz from cats like pianist Billy Taylor and non-traditional jazz from John Scofield and Mike Stern, who's a monster. And then I dig metal, too -- Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, Alice in Chains, and so on. Of course, I'm not going to say that I listen to everything; I don't particularly care for rap or country-pop. Then again, I really try to have a diverse listening palette. It helps me keep an open mind to music."

That's it! What do you guys think? Who are the professional musicians? Blind Melon or Dream Theater?

    Yours, Jeff =)

Let me draw an analogy for you: I smoke cigarettes, 'bout a pack to pack-and-a-half a day. Am I DEFINITELY going to get cancer? No. Am I DEFINITELY going to get emphezema? No. Am I DEFINITELY going to die from smoking? No.

Am I MORE LIKELY to contract death from smoking than a non-smoker? YES. Am I MORE LIKELY to contract some smoking related disease? YES.

Point: Sure, you may go to rock concerts on a daily/nightly basis, and stick your head inside of a speaker cone for 3 hours a night, and experience no hearing loss - as long as you have a "positive attitude." <giggle> But, aren't you more likely to be doing damage to your ears without protection? Would you have unprotected sex? NOOOOOOOO...

Anyway, I guess the person who posted that was trying to tell me to stop preaching. Fine. I never was, but, I guess I'll "stop" now. It's a free country (for now). Go do what you want.

-Hairball, YJLHB (Ytsejam Long-Haired Brotherhood) & Audiophile with good hearing ^^^^^^^ hehe...I'll stop now. =)

    p.s. I think I'm gonna have to unsubscribe again, soon...we'll see. <sigh>

Anyway, the Pat Moraz years in Yes were the worst time for the band. I'm not nocking Relayer, because I love that album, I bought it the day it came out on Remaster, anyway.

Pat Moraz was in the Moody Blues (who aren't that progressive).

After the Relayer album each band member needed time away from the band. And all of them most likly made there best solo albums.

Jon Anderson-- Olias of Sunhilliow Steve Howe-- Beginnings Chris Squire-- A Fish out of Water Alan White-- Ramshackeled Pat Moraz-- "Who Cares"

On the subject of hair. I have kind of short hair but it was long, around my shoulders. Not that it matters much but I got a lot more girls when it was long.

    Later,

DREAM THEATER: "ACOUSTIC DREAMS" Information and Update Current to 8/18/1995

NOTE: INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGE: I am now durnik@indirect.com

Hi all! This is the latest information on Acoustic Dreams, the new LIMITED EDITION Dream Theater CD I will be producing. It will be a numbered, hand-initialed limited print just like Subconscious was.

============================================================================ DISCLAIMER: Acoustic Dreams falls into a grey area of law as an uncopyrighted recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA, it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such. This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting nothing for this. ============================================================================

Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

    1. What is Acoustic Dreams? 2. What is the release schedule? 3. How can I get my own copy of Acoustic Dreams? 4. Orders received. ============================================================================

    1. What is Acoustic Dreams?

Hi all! Allow me to introduce myself, if you aren't familiar with me yet. I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special-edition CDs. I noticed a lot of the mass-manufactured bootleg offerings were spiralling quite high in price and yet offered little for the die-hard fan, and I concocted a scheme by which I could make around minimum wage by producing CDs on my own, CDs that would fill the demand for REAL rarities and special songs, unreleased items, live shows, and the like.

Basically, since no CD plant will print them for me, I have to rent studio and equipment time and do it myself. So far, it's working. :)

Fortunately, and for this I am very relieved, my CD efforts so far have been incredibly well-received by the net community, especially the Ytsejam mailing list. I just do what I can do and leave the rest up to God, and I guess the Almighty isn't disappointing you folks. People from all walks of life, all countries of the world, both sexes, all races, and all religions have joined in on the Subconscious and Cygnus projects, and I am very happy to have you all along for the ride. I'll keep making CDs as long as you folks are willing to keep buying them. Thanks so _very_ much... :)

And now, it's time to get Acoustic Dreams together.

Well, this is the next CD I'm doing, also known as Dream Theater Unplugged. We were given a VERY high-quality soundboard tape of DT's recent Unplugged performance in Europe, and it can only be fully expressed in the form of a CD. Trust me. :) I am fervently hoping that the finished product is well-liked. I've created the master DAT and submitted it so I can get the glass master made.

Here's the final tracklisting from Acoustic Dreams. I know many were hoping I'd find more stuff, but I've pretty much scraped the barrel dry at this point. The only other things of similar sound quality I could find were in soundboard shows that ought to be released to CD in their entirety.

Acoustic Dreams 1. Another Day 2. Lifting Shadows off a Dream 3. Wait For Sleep 4. The Silent Man 5. Lie (boogie version) 6. Tears (Rush cover) 7. O Holy Night

Electric Extras 8. Perfect Strangers (with Bruce Dickinson on vocals) 9. 6:00 (performed in session with a much better mix) 10. Caught In A Web (another better performance)

Bonus Tracks (acoustic) 11. Voices (just a small part of it was all there was) acoustic 12. Bad (U2 cover) acoustic

I hope that once you've heard it, you will, like me, have your breath taken away by the beauty of the acoustic tracks and the clarity and sharpness of the electric mixes. As good as Cygnus sounded, this is easily and by far the best sounding CD I will have ever made.

    2. What is the release schedule?

Here is the current schedule of releases as I see it (all dates estimated):

NOW - Rush: Cygnus released/shipping (this is more or less solid) NOW - Dream Theater: "Acoustic Dreams" ordering begins 09/30/1995 - Dream Theater: "Acoustic Dreams" released/shipping 10/15/1995 - Public Affection: "The Death of a Dictionary" ordering begins 11/15/1995 - Dream Theater: "When Dream and Today Unite" ordering begins 11/30/1995 - Public Affection: "The Death of a Dictionary" released/shipping 12/25/1995 - Dream Theater: "When Dream and Today Unite" released/shipping 02/--/1996 - Rush: To be announced 04/--/1996 - Live or Type O-Negative: To be announced 06/--/1996 - Dream Theater: To be announced

Here are a few descriptions to keep your curiosity satiated :)

Dream Theater "Subconscious" Released 04/03/1995 - Limited print of 500 copies - sold out Contained Dream Theater rarities including A Change of Season. Rush "Cygnus" Released 08/14/1995 - Unlimited print - still available Contains a rare soundboard show from the Hemispheres tour. Dream Theater "Acoustic Dreams" Currently in pre-ordering. To be released 09/30/1995 - Limited print of 500 copies Contains beautiful unplugged performances. Public Affection "The Death of a Dictionary" To be released 11/30/1995 - Unlimited print Is actually +Live+'s little-known first album, released in 1989, two years before their 1991 breakthrough Mental Jewelry. Demand for this one is skyrocketing, and the Jam gets first shot at it. Dream Theater "When Dream and Today Unite" To be released 12/25/1995 - Limited print of either 500 or 1000. Contains the songs from Dream and Day only with James LaBrie on vocals. Collected from MANY sources and optimized for quality.

The following are all "Work in Progress" releases... Rush other titles I'm considering (for any of the given shows): Land's Edge, Storm World, Lifeforce, Arena of the Ancients... Rush "A Symptom of Life" - from 12/20/81 2nd gen soundboard Contains a LOT of neat stuff. a LOT. But very long... 2 CD set? Rush "Concordant Crossroads" - from 3/24/81 audience MASTER in stereo This one has unbelievable good sound quality. It's a tossup whether to take this or Symptom, since both are so good but so similar. Rush "Sleight of Mind" - from a remastered 6/25/75 Toronto This tour has been very underrepresented in available material, so who knows, if S.H.'s cleanup efforts turn out good... +Live+ "Disenchanting Discourse" - from a 10/25/94 audience MASTER in stereo It might be released, it might not, depending on many things. If you would like to see it released, please let me know and let as many people know as you can. I tend to find ways to release things when I find an overwhelming demand for them. :) Type O-Negative "Deathgrip" - from a 5/30/94 audience MASTER in stereo A great setlist and decent sound. Only my worries about how many copies I can sell prevent this. I can't undertake anything less than a potential sellout project or I risk going under. Again, if this is a title you'd like to see, you can make it happen. All I need is a lot of interest, and away we go! Dream Theater... oh who knows, there's so much good stuff. Possible shows: Osaka soundboard from late 1992 Hamburg soundboard from spring 1993 Vocalist auditions various excellent DATs recorded in Texas

    3. How can I order a copy of Acoustic Dreams?

Finally, I am going to go ahead and let the ordering begin, because I can tell everyone's excitement level is peaking at this point. :) I will say this in advance: I expect it to come out 9/30 or thereabouts (I'm going to try and beat my own schedule) and that's two months away, folks. If that dosen't bother you too much, I guess it won't bother me either. However, I'm one of those guys who hates having things take too long. :)

I say this because Subconscious took an unbelievably long time to turnaround due to delays in the making of it, and despite my best efforts, Cygnus is going a bit too slow for my taste as well (though it's still within the predicted schedule, it was a schedule I had been planning to beat). So I am trying to jumpstart Acoustic Dreams so there's NO DAMN WAITING. :)

    Here's the nitty gritty then:

RESERVATIONS. I'll take them, to save you a COPY, but not necessarily a _specific copy_. In many cases, people who request special numbers such as birthdays and so on will get them. But people requesting a specific low number are going to find that they're all sold. Which brings me to the next point: ORDERS. The numbering, excepting special requests when possible, will fill in the order I receive the mail orders. It's only fair after all. I'll reserve a copy for someone over e-mail, but if thirty people get their orders in before he or she does, it's not fair for me to still hold copy #014 or whatever. You all get the idea... these decisions are just in the effort to make it fair for all.

Please, I stress to all of you, don't miss this if you missed Subconscious. It really does pain me to have to tell a fellow DT fan that there simply aren't any more Sub discs to be had, especially because I would be MORE than glad to sell one if I had it.

Blanks, materials, studio time, etc is cheaper per unit for a production line of 1000 than for 500, which is why Cygnus was cheaper for the Ytsejammers. Acoustic Dreams, alas, must remain $25. I was hoping to bring it down to $21 or $20 but that wouldn't be cost effective. I think I may be able to do that for the Public Affection CD, however.

Things are pretty simple from here. Send along a money order for $25 bucks to my address, being sure to include a note with your name, the address to ship to, your email address, and WHICH CD you're ordering (after all, Cygnus is still in ordering) and HOW MANY you're ordering. As before, international customers may use whatever means of payment is most convenient for them, though I stress that sending cash is risky and should not be a first option, but a backup plan. :) Also, to pool opinions: would you all want me to include a number list as orders are received?

The address and so on is me at:

Mike "Acoustic Dreamer" Bahr 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224

My home telephone number, available as a courtesy to you, is 1-602-777-0501. I am usually not home on weekends (band practice) so try during the week, between noon and 9pm pacific time, for best results. Also, please use discretion when handling this number, as it is, after all, my own home phone, and I will be very confused if a stranger calls at 3:00 AM. :) I trust you Jammers to be cool about it, as you always have in the past.

    4. Orders received.

This is NOT "reservations"... it's paid-for orders. If you have a reservation, it's still valid, trust me. :) These are just the numbers that are filled. Also there are a handful of "saved numbers" in there.
