CYGNUS CD PROJECT UPDATE / SUBCONSCIOUS CONCLUSION
    current to 8/15/95

NOTICE: INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGE: I am now durnik@indirect.com

This is an update on the status of orders and such things on the
Rush "Cygnus" CD... made available exclusively to the members of the Ytsejam
    list before anybody else. :)

    EVEN QUICKER UPDATE:
The CDs are HERE. I've been shipping them as fast as I can. I've
already shipped the first 80 of them.

Here's the no-wait address and cost. Read on for further info on the CD.

$23 check, money order, or cashier's check/traveler's cheque to:
            Michael Bahr
            3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
            Chandler, AZ 85224
PLEASE SPECIFY that it's Cygnus you want. I do a lot of mailing and may not
realize what it is that's being purchased.

SUBCONSCIOUS: The CDs are finally _gone_. Every copy has been sold. I've even
sold my own personal extra copies. I can't believe this was so popular!
Will Subconscious ever be made again? Unless some Italian company copies it,
I am sorry to say it will not. One of the explicit conditions I set forth
when I made the disc was that it would be very special and limited, and I
would be breaking my confidence with the people who have bought it under the
understanding it would be a unique, rare release. I swear I don't mean to make
people miss out... but a promise is a promise. Would people trust me when I
say "get it now" if they could get it a year later? I calculate not. :)

THANKS EVERYONE for being a part of this! You all RULE! :)

DISCLAIMER: Cygnus falls into a grey area under law as an uncopyrighted
recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production
occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA,
it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such.
This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting
    nothing for this.

Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will
want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know
I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not
think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit
of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

    1. What the hell is Cygnus?
    2. When can I order and how?
    3. Orders received.
    =============================================================================

    1. What the hell is Cygnus?

Hi all, I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special edition CDs. Earlier
this year, I made available a special, _very_ limited edition Dream Theater
CD called Subconscious. I didn't know if the project would work at all,
since I had to use my own money to finance the project, and had to be very
close on costs to even make it a non-loss financially. But you responded,
    Ytsejammers!

The CD sold, sold, and sold some more. In fact, the entire limited
edition print of 500 copies, each hand-numbered and signed in gold by myself,
sold out entirely to you, the most devoted fans of Dream Theater on earth.

And I do mean _Earth_! I got orders from the USA, Canada, Mexico,
Japan, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark,
the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Israel, Singapore,
Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece, and a few more countries I am sure
I have forgotten to mention. Truly, the WORLD made Subconscious a success for
me and for the Jam, so I'm going to hope that Cygnus will be another one! My
heart goes out to all of you in every country of the world for joining in!

What I did was work with a pressing plant using rental equipment and
some of my own as well, and an exhausting three months of preparation,
packaging, and mailing, not to mention production of the CD, and a million
other things, and made it a reality. I was relieved beyond words when I read
the positive comments people had for it online.

Cygnus is the project I've done to fill the gap between Spring 1995's
Subconscious and Winter 1995's WHEN DREAM AND JAMES UNITE. Cygnus will be a
recording from an ultra-rare Rush show, the single best sounding Rush show in
existence, from the mystical Hemispheres tour of 1978-79. It is an unlimited
print, but there will likely not be more than 1000 ever made.

Here's the information on the show.

    Title: Rush "Cygnus"
Source: True soundboard reel-to-reel, original length 81 min
    Running time: 73 min
Venue: Convention Center Arena (TCC Arena)
    Location: Tucson, Arizona
    Date: November 20, 1978
Generation: Transferred to 48kHz DAT from a 2nd gen analog.
Quality: Beyond comparison. Higher than "Oakland '92" and "Pinkpop".

    Setlist:
            Anthem
            A Passage to Bangkok
            By-Tor and the Snow Dog
                    I. At the Tobes of Hades
                    II. Across the Styx
                    III. Of The Battle
            Xanadu
            Something for Nothing
            The Trees
Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage
            Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres
                    I. Prelude
                    II. Apollo
                    III. Dionysus
                    IV. Armageddon
                    V. Cygnus
                    VI. The Sphere
            Circumstances
            A Farewell to Kings

Note that La Villa Strangiato had to be cut or else I couldn't fit
the Cygnus saga on the CD! I'm sorry about that, I hope it won't kill the
experience for anybody. They had some sound problems during that song
anyhow, so in a way, maybe you _don't_ want to hear it.

Also on the original tape was a cut-off version of the beginning of 2112,
the Overture and then half of the Temples section. In order to make Cygnus
fit onto a single CD, I cut those seven minutes out of the DAT. Everyone
has a live 2112 on ATWAS album, anyway.

Now that I sort of "have the hang of it" where CDs are concerned, I
have put together some colorful art for the CD and cover. For those who didn't
get one, Subconscious had a gold-on-black motif, much like the Terminator-2
and Star Wars laserdisc box-sets. It was dignified, and direct. And now, for
Cygnus, I want to really make people say "wow!" The cover is pretty wicked
looking, I'll try and post a copy.

    2. Where can I order and how?

The first 300 orders have a random 30 freebie video montages thrown
into them, as promised. I've already taped all of these, so I'm going to
leave it up to the computer. A Dungeons & Dragons dice program called
KrystalDice is going to randomly choose the winners!

            How to order!!!

Remember when Subconscious came out, and I said certain costs were
permanent, and had gone into the production cost? I didn't lie... Cygnus will
be CHEAPER than Subconscious was. The price will be $23. For anyone in Canada
ordering, add only $1 for postage. For anyone outside North America, add $2
for postage (so it would be the same price as Sub) and that will take care of
it. There's a lot of bean-counting that I do to come up with those numbers,
so trust me, it's what it amounts to. Plus, you can order as MANY Cygnus discs
as you want, because you on the Jam are getting a shot at it before I offer
it anywhere else. Also, it's still $25 for NON-Ytsejammers. Check out my posts
to alt.music.rush and a.m.dt, you'll find it's true. Naturally, if you have
friends who want a copy of Cygnus, they can get it at the $23 price, same as
    you Jammers.

Please use a money order if you can. The reason is simple: it's safe!
I know you paid and you know I have it (it's traceable). And you know if you
don't get a CD or a refund, I'll go to jail.

For international orders, I will indeed accept cash if you wish. I
urge you to be careful, because every order for Subconscious that contained
cash made it safely to me, but that might not always be the case. I don't
want anybody to lose their money. For orders of 2 or more Cygnus discs,
a travellers cheque or international money order is economical to use. If
you decide to use cash, please wrap it tight in a thick envelope and try to
hide it, so that nobody will steal it.

Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery. It will actually be closer to
2 or 2 and a half weeks, but in order to be safe, I'm giving you the extreme
possibility. Understand that, as with Subconscious, I'll be making every
effort to get them sent fast and soon.

            Here's what to do.

Send your payment, along with your Name, Address to ship it to, Internet
email address (in case I need to contact you), how MANY CDs you want, and,
optionally, your phone number. I say optionally, because I know some of you
    want to keep them unlisted.

    Send all this to:
                            Michael "Bane of Balance" Bahr
                            3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
                            Chandler, AZ 85224 (USA)

As a courtesy, I'm going to provide my home phone number to you.
If you wish to speak to me for any reason, including questions, comments,
suggestions, or you just want to chat with another dedicated fan of Rush and
Dream Theater, you are very welcome to call me at 1-602-777-0501. I am
usually home between noon and 9pm Mountain Standard Time. Please use this
phone number with proper discretion, however, as I will be very confused if
you call me at 3:00 in the morning.

    3. Orders received.

This time, I'm in the thick of the AD project, and Cygnus
is coming along just dandy as well... and I will be able to confirm that an
order was received if you email me about it. I won't be posting a long list
to the Jam because of complaints I received about the Sub listing.

For the most part, all orders usually get through. If you want to
confirm yours PERSONALLY, feel free to do so, via email or voice.

Well that about wraps it up for this update of the CYGNUS CD project.
Everyone be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!

Well, folks, I wish I could say my two day trip out of town
happened without incident but this is not the case. As you may have
guessed, I lost my internet account, because while I was gone, someone on
the Jam who I trusted my password to decided to log on and spam every
goddamn newsgroup on the net with, of all things, a pyramid chain letter.

Now I'm not naming names because at least 8 or 9 Jammers knew my
account and password because of various things (in some cases, they
needed it to telnet to their own servers from here, in others, to FTP, in
others, to get past a firewall, etc.) and I suppose it's thus partially
my fault. But if I can't trust the Jam with my net account, can I really
trust them with, say, my phone number?

I'm not going to go incognito or anything... after al, most of
you have shown me the very same trust when it came to pre-ordering CDs.
And to turn on all of you would be wrong. Two wrongs don't make a
right... it's cliche but it's true. Plus, I know that there are literally
hundreds of Jammers who would gladly join me in a bloodthirsty witch hunt
for the person who did this to me while I was out of town.

But I guess I might as well forget it and get on to matters at hand.

All the mail (Acoustic Dreams reservations, etc) sent to me since
Monday should be presumed lost, sacrificed to the Lord of the Pit. If you
sent me mail, you'll have to send it again... I'm very sorry, and as you
now know, I _definitely_ didn't _want_ that to be necessary. My new net
address is durnik@indirect.com... some things hardly ever change. :)

Cygnus CDs are in and have been shipping, I've cranked out 80 or
so into the mail so far. I've posted (or tried to post) the list of
numbers for Acoustic Dreams. If it dosen't show up, I'll know why.

To whoever it was that decided to set me back three days work:
what could have possibly gotten you so mad at me that you decided to
deprive good, honest, ordinary Ytsejammers of the CDs they've paid for?
It was a very childish act indeed. I hope you use your MIND next time
you're considering being a spoiled baby about whatever it was. After all,
it's the JAMMERS who are waiting for their CDs. Not me. I _have_ my copy.
I'd like that to be the case for all who ordered them.

Sorry to come off like a jerk to the rest of you... just venting
I guess. Just so you know, I still love you all, you make all these
projects possible, and I hope you enjoy the CDs yet to come.

I started dating my ex when my hair was short, and grew it long
while we were together (4 years - various lengths). I kind of know what you
mean, though. I'd rather wait for 2 or 3 years for someone wiht some real

Can't say much about Echolyn or KC (going to try them out some day),
but there are a couple I could maybe recommend. Saviour Machine (influences
ranging from Sabbath to U2 to a whole lot of Pink Floyd with David
Bowie-esque vocals - very Gothic-sounding), Tourniquet (mostly along the
lines of progressive thrash (not death metal) with their older stuff - heavy
classical influences, and some jazz influences as well), Believer (HEAVY
classical/operatic/thrash), and Veni Domine (sounds a whole lot like QR -
have fun finding this one, though). These are but a few I can think of off

You're probably right that it won't end. A whole month to go too. I'm still
taking credit for starting the hair "debate" :p but I definitely liked
killing Deaf Melon better. Nothing like making fun of a band you hate when
there's not much to say about a band you love.

Oh, here's something. That Ronnie Scott's gig. Does anyone have it on

    Hello Jammers...

I have got this little plan, but I need all of you to cooperate for it to
    work.

I'd like each and everyone of you to e-mail me your top 3 DT songs. I will
then give number 1 3 points, number 2 2 points and of course number 3 1
point. After a while when a lot of you people have sent me their 'votes' I
will post a list to the jam with sort of a DT Top 100. That way we all will
be able to see what DT songs are considered the best all around the world.

Hope you like the idea and you will mail me..

    Thanx in advance

I believe it was Zack that asked this...

<<(sometimes like _Europe_, what ever happened to those guys?)>>

I'm still not too clear on if the band exists anymore or not - likely not,
since they're all doing their own things now. I just got John Norum's new CD
(really cool stuff; he isn't as flashy as Petrucci, but the man can shred a
mean guitar...), Joey Tempest has a solo CD out - from what I hear, it's
completely different from what he was doing in Europe. Ian is back in his
band from prior to Europe, Trilogy, but I've never heard any of their
material. I think John Leven was working with Jens Johanssen last I heard
(Jens??? <G>), and I think he said Mic Michaeli and Kee Marcello had been
touring with Glenn Hughes - don't quote me on that part, though. I haven't
really listened to them in over five years; I much preferred their older
stuff with Norum to begin with, and I was becoming pretty disinterested in
the commercial rock scene about when _Out Of This World_ was released. Which
was all well and good, because _Prisoners In Paradise_ sucked iguana tails!
Schmaltzy, cliched, boring, pitiful crap! No, I take that back, I did like
"Girl From Lebanon". But "Til My Heart Breaks Down Your Door"?! Give me a
*break*! (neck, please) As I recall, it was primarily the lyrics/vocals
that were bad, too. Take a hike, Joey... <G>

DISCLAIMER: ::covering my butt in case someone takes offense:: I'm actually

first album - one of these days she's going to drag them out, watch them, and
give herself a hernia from hysterical laughter.

Subject: HAIR!, can Myung solo? and ACOS
    Message-ID: <v01510101ac5af3a32b9b@[199.232.46.229]>

    Hairball,

Regarding the YJLHB (Ytsejam Long-Haired Brotherhood). I wanna join :). I
think it's funny how many guys have said they did or didn't get dates
depending on the length of their hair? I always had kinda long hair. In
high school it was the typical 80's style. Cut over the ears, bottom of the
neck in back, short on top. Then I grew it (even permed it once - ack!).
Then I cut it way, way short. Shorter than it's ever been in my life.
Everyone loved it. Still, no dates. Started growing it back and met a girl
and kept growing it and broke up with her and kept growing it. That was a
lousy two years. Went through a phase of using tons of gel to keep it back.
Too short to put in a pony-tail, too long to see. Then the gel wasn't
enough so I started wearing a hat (a cycling cap - couldn't wear a baseball
cap). Now I've met a new wonderful girl who loves my hair and always wants
me to wear it down. What a story, huh? Thanks for reading it :).

    Aviad,

I can relate to what you're saying but I wanna defend those guys. Maybe
Myung isn't a soloist. Maybe he never studied improvisation and isn't
comfortable with it. Bass - electric or acoustic - does not lend itself to
soloing; it takes a lot of work to do a good job, I think. I studied jazz
for a few years and played a lot of jazz - mostly on acoustic bass. I'm
still not always confortable soloing. It's a lot of pressure. Myung does
play great bass lines though. As for JP, I have to admit that when I listen
to DT, I listen to the drums or the overall song and sing along with it
cranked. In the rare times when I can hear the bass clearly, I listen to
that. Usually, I don't pay attention to JP's solo.

    ACOS

I was just listening to ACOS from Subconscious and I'm really mad that they
took out the "Please don't go." I'm also a little confused. When they
played it in Providence, they played that part. I LOVE THAT PART!! Why
would they change it? Maybe Portnoy's getting back at us for making him
take out the fuck. I'd much rather have the fuck and the don't go part than
neither part. I don't know. That's like my favorite section :(.

    My home page

Lastly, I'd like to invite everyone to check out my newly updated web page,
esp. the link to The Joel Rivard Group home page (in which, I play bass)
that has a couple of sound clips that you can download and enjoy. I just
got a counter on my page to tell me how many people have visited and so far
it's been just me (three times). So I'd like to get that counter into the
    double digits :). Thanks.

What do you mean by "number of guitars" in a song? Caught in a Web has a
single guitar part that can be played in its entirety live. There are no
overdubs. However, two guitars were used to record it (7-string and
six-string). The rhythm consists of 6-tracks of guitar (2-7-string,
    2-six-string, 2-six-string w/ lows removed).

    Hello Jammers

It's been a while since I posted, so I'm sorry to come back with a silly
    question.

Has anyone else been recieving the jams lately with files attached? The last
2 have come to me with a file called ytsejamd.mme. They are text files that
have a reprint of the jams inside. Anyone have a clue?

    Said by Aviad,

    >I take comfort in JP's UAGM solo. Amazing. A brilliant display of feel.
    >which is connected AGAIN to the spirit issue.

Aviad, while I do agree that some of the bootleg solo stuff I've
heard, mostly Subconcious, hasn't been the best musically, for you to pick
UAGM as "a brilliant display of feel" is shocking. While technically great,
the solo is simply showtime. John Petrucci said himself in an interview
with "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" that the solo for UAGM is often
said to be his best, but that it really is just "a bag of tricks".
I think that the UAGM solo is incredible. JP does make his guitar
    sing.
The things to keep in mind are 1) that the solo for UAGM, as with
all the solos were written; JP had time to get it right and 2) in concert,
while improvising, each note hasn't been studied and played over and over
    again so that it's perfect.
I do not think that DT has any major flaws. They are great at what
they do, write and play wonderful music. That doesn't always include
    improvising perfectly.
Oh well... this was just my (sleepy) opinion....not meant as a flame! :)

    nites!

from that earlier band? What was the name of the band that Moraz was in
BEFORE the above mentioned earlier band? In which progressive band did
    Moraz play AFTER Yes?

    a. Moraz came from Refugee
    b. His bandmates were from the Nice with Keith Emerson
    c. (not sure)
    d. Moraz then joined the Moody Blues in place of Michael Pinder
He later joined up with Bruford for "Flag" and "Music for Piano and
