Can you post the answer to this to the entire 'Jam. I vaguely remember
this being talked about when I first joined, but I haven't seen anything
    about it since.

I picked it up at the _Compact Disc Warehouse_ in Sunnyvale
(Bay Area). It was the only copy there.

    Hi, all.

First of all my sympathy goes out to Mike Bahr upon being turned on
by a cyberfriend. <Do they make a Hallmark card for that?> That
really makes me mad that someone on this list would do that. At
the risk of sounding too idealistic, I like to think of the lists
that I'm on as some sort of family unit, this one being the most
close-knit. That was a really low thing to do. As if Mike didn't
    do enough for you already...

I was surprised to Aviad say that he preferred the emotional aspects
of the UaGM solo to the solo in Another Day, for instance. While the
Another Day solo may not be the most technically demanding, but I feel
much more of a tug from the AD solo than the UaGM solo. I always have
to hold my breath for the really fast scale in AD. UaGM seems more like
JP is just working the fretboard like a typewriter. Not that there's
anything wrong with that. I also love the solo in Voices, when he
begins with the long, slow notes, and holds the bends like he does in
AD, then after the buildup he just totally pushes it over the edge with
the mega-fast part. This isn't flamage; just a little YJLHB discussion.
    :)

Speaking of the hair, I noticed that jammers commented that they would
<or wouldn't> cut theirs, even for Cindy Crawford. I wouldn't either,
    but I might for Helen Hunt...Daisy Fuentes...Teri Hatcher...Jennifer
    Aniston...maybe Sandra Bullock...

Okay, you guys convinced me. I now plan to grow my hair out some
again. I don't know how long, but some. Well, that is, unless I get a
reallly awesome job that makes me keep it short.
I am also fervently searching for Ytsejam shirts. Got some info,
but I don't know if any are left, and I don't want to send money to the guy
without knowing if there are going to be any.
Oh yeah, I just noticed today for the first time that there are some
keyboard embellishments on a few Iron Maiden songs. While not obvious, they
are there, probably to give more body tot the tunes. Kind of cool.

    M Van Opstall:
You are correct when stating that there were indeed 6 "tracks" of guitar
in "Caught In A Web". However. I mean, not overdubs, but total "parts" in a
song. Innocence Faded has 6 different "parts" of guitars, sans overdubs. Whereas
"Caught" uses 6 parts to create one.
    That's what I meant.

While John P., in my opinion, is one of the best <if not the best> player out
there today, and I'm proud to consider him #2 on my list of 4 influences.
However, I've noticed that in the "non-studio" versions of DT songs <ie. Music
In Progress video>, he doesn't deviate much from his studio solos. At the
opposite end of the spectrum, Randy Rhoads was a master at improv solos.

There is nothing wrong with playing solos as they appear on albums, this is
a case of playing a safe and comfortable repertoire. Some artists are contented
with this. Is John? Not likely. So, I cannot make the previous statement with
100% accuracy, as I have yet to see DT live. I'll see if my opinion will change
or not when they come through here.

Don't get me wrong, I love DT and I listen to virtually nothing else.

And is there no answers to my last trivia question ?

(to me) a player has to have an ambition to build himself into his music.
You can have your typical bass lines - your own trademark of bass lines -
In which you will be recognized as an individual player. but there is
something more Superior than just having an array of nice and even
incredible bass lines - and that's the soloing part. And I fully agree
It takes time to do a good job and to feel comfortable with it - but we
didn't force John Myung to display his redicalous soloing skills .
And no matter how hard it is to do it good - a player must strive to
reach a good level of expressing his feelings and personality through
the music and for me a solo is the best way yet.
In fact I think if (like you said) John didn't take his time to study
improvisation - maybe he's ignoring a very important area of the music?
Nobody told him to be Steve Swallow or John Pattituci! Nobody's talking
about pyrotechniques and unbelievable soloing licks. We're talking about
feelings. Something that did not exist in his soloing.
Maybe john just did not fully explored the music and his playing and I
think that's a shame. It shows (and I'm walking on thin line here) a
    certain level of limitation, musically.

Wew. Defend the guys as you may but john myung overlooked an important
part of the music - the more spiritual part - the idea of personalities
    and music.

About JP - Offcourse he had a lot of time to adjust everything in UAGM
but I don't think a player in his level of professionality will invent
a whole new method for one solo - this bag of tricks he used to do that
solo is a result of years of work - I think he could have put parts of
it in an improvisation - or a similar part anyway.
I think he improvises badly too - It's something for young kids who
like chops to say: "Wow! Dude! that's like incredible! man!".
He didn't develope himself in that area - It's hard to be an individualist
in one's music while all of the personal parts (solos actually) are made
at home sitting in that couch and puting everything in order. You loose
a large part of the effect. Improvising on real time will not lie as to
feelings and emotion. And maybe that's something JP just given up for.

As for DT to have flows - the band Dream Theater has no major flaws. But
when looking at the players who ensemble it - there is a possibility that
they had failed to explore a very important aspect of the music. The flaw
is in some of the players - not the BAND.

    ..

    Aviad.

UAGM solo is a bag of tricks - but what a magician JP is to pull entire
    rabbits from it! David Koperfield.

I'm not the one who orginally posted but I got a copy through CDnow(
telnet cdnow.com), I think they had it for about 13.96 plus shipping. I
have never seen it at a record store. I would like to say that they do
at times resemble DT with the keyboards and guitar. The band does a
little more acoustic guitar and piano stuff than DT. I personally like
the vocals better, and the lead singer sometimes reminds me of Geoff
Tate. This is a great CD so I recommend that any DT fan go out and get it.

I see that some people on the Jam have not heard the greats of Progrock
like King Crimson, Gentle Giant etc. Well, I have a bunchof music
that I would be probably happy to make a sample out of for Jammers
if I get enough requests that it would be feasible to buy a pack of
high bias tapes (since that seems to be the only type people trade
anymore). It'd be about $1 for shipping I think plus whatever cost
for the tape, though if you have something on tape to trade I may
    be interested.

Unless I am swamped I'll do custom tapes. I got new stuff and I got
old stuff, though I'm hardly a progrock god, and I got fusion and
nonprog stuff. If you want to hear before you buy send to me and I'll
give you a list of what I've got (after I type it up).

WOW! I have heard one song from these guys and they are incredible! They are identical to DT! I could tell any one of you guys this song was written by DT and except for the vocals you would belive it. And the vocalist is incredible also. He sounds alot like James, but IMO better. He has just a tad more crunch in his voice. If DT ever got a new singer they should get him (but I'm not suggesting that at all, I love James' voice). The CD Now store carries this for $13.95. If you dont know how to get there the link is on my page (http://junix.ju.edu/UsrWebPages/tallen/home.html) under the "Music and Bands" section. I will put on a sound file of them sometime soon so check it out! I will also add some more DT sound bites, probably wav files.

CHECK THEM OUT! I want to thank Mike Backof for showing me this INCREDIBLE band!

I was watching LiJ the other day, and it was said that Jay Beckenstein (yeah, that sax guy) played 8(!) different improvisations over the outro to Another Day. I have heard two now. One from the album and one from the video of the recording session. Has ANYONE got or heard any of the other six. He certainly blew JP and JL away with them, and the two I've (and all of you with I&W + LiJ) heard were pretty awesome, so what about it?

Oh dear, they really are crap :( >============================

Time sig= 9/8 :) :) That quote is pretty verbatim with what JP said (I have the exact issue it was taken from -- complete with a brillo JP poster)

    >>The only thing I know about my biological parents is that my mother was >>a mostly-German college student in Iowa. My adoptive mother is 100% >>Italian and my adoptive father is French/Irish. I think that I am mostly >confused! >

    My family = 50% Belgian 50% Anglo-Australian

    All correct :)

    >Now, what band Moraz was in before that.....you stumped me. But after Yes, >Moraz joined the Moody Blues. >

    Got me....

    >The five solo albums that the members of Yes recorded during this era: > >Jon Anderson: Olias of Sunhillow >Chris Squire: Fish Out Of Water >Steve Howe: Beginnings >Alan White: Ramshackled >Patrick Moraz: not 100% sure, but was it self-titled? >

The Story of I is the the one I think...

    Regarding the ACOS EP:

I really wish they had included the UK track and the Yes medley :( Perhaps one of Mike Bahr's up coming releases could inlcude all tracks NOT on the EP.

Does anyone have a bootleg of the show??
