Hey. Just a quick (and unsolicited) plug for Inferno. They sometimes place
plugs on the YTSEJAM and I sprung (sprang ??) for their CD Psychic Distance.
For those who like the harder sounding DT songs, this disk should be well
received. So the drumming is not MP, the guitar is not JP and the singing is
not JL, etc. - they really can play. And, the compositions are well written.
I hope their recent rumblings about "softening their sound" dont kill a good
thing.
If you are interested, you can contact James Peele of Inferno at:
jpeele@unf6.cis.unf.edu
The disk is $16.50 postpaid (a bit high for a blind stab in the dark), but
worth a try.

Old Trivia Answer:
--- Speaking of 'Quadrephenia', Pete Townsend wrote another 'rock opera'
between 'Tommy' and 'Quadrephenia'. What is/was the working title of that
rock opera, Although this rock opera never made it to production, some of
the songs were recorded on various Who albums.
Yes, It was called 'Lighthouse'; most of the songs that were released were
on, I believe, the 'Who's Next' album, although my source did not indicate
which ones they were
New Trivia Questions:
Before their short stint with Yes on 'Drama', Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes
recorded under what another name?; What (in)famous song was this group most
well known for, and why?
Who replaced Alan Holdsworth & Bill Bruford in UK? (Hint: names(s) have
appeared in numerous recent JAMs.)
-----No flames, just a more precise answer. 'Tears', which DT did as a
cover was a part of the composition '2112' on Rush' album '2112'
I stand corrected, it WAS on '2112', the album, but NOT part of the concept
piece of the same name.
To Mike Kizer, per his requested cover info on JAM 916:
'Red Hill Mining Town'--although it is well known that Bono writes almost
all the lyrics for U2, almost all pieces are listed as group compositions.
'Achilles Last Stand --is, I believe, the usual Page/Plant composition; and
I believe it was on the Presence, not Physical Graffiti
'In the Dead of Night'-- is by, I believe, Wetton, Jobson & Holdsworth
(Bruford?)
(Note: According to info on the Progessive Rock Web Page
(http://www.ari.net/prog/) the original UK lineup will be recording some
new material)
'Carry On Wayward Son'--It is I believe, a Kerry Livgren composition, and
it is on Kansas' Leftoverture
'Turn It On Again'-- Probably a group composition, although Phil Collins
probably is responsible for the lyrics.
Never been much of a Journey fan, although Steve Perry originally comes
from a small city just a few miles south of Fresno.

Well, I just got back from my chance to "hear" A Change of
Seasons, as well as the rest of the new EP (don't ask, please, because I
don't have it for trade. Just wait another month and it'll be out.)
I must say that ACOS, its current version, is the best DT song
I've heard to date. Yes, surpassing Metropolis, Voices, and Learning to
Live. It just RULES!!! You guys (and ladies) are going to _love_ it.
The opening acoustic intro is so cool... I could swear I was
living in a swords & sorcery novel as it played. It was _very_ well
written and played. For a few moments I also though I was listening to a
movie soundtrack from some medeival movie... like Willow, or Krull, or
something like that.
Then WHAM! Into the part we all recognize from Subconscious. The
opening verses are MUCH better sounding, as there has been effects added
to the instruments and James does the most BITCHIN' voice backups
"Innocence caressing me..." in fact, they hearken to the other songs by
DT with incredible harmony lines: Pull Me Under and Voices.
There is a quiet part that sounds really cool. There are repeated
soundbites from the movie Dead Poets Society in it. Specifically, several
times Robin Williams says "Seize the Day" and then he has Neil Perry read
that poem by Frost (or was it Whitman? or someone else?):
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may
(something something) from trying
For the flower you see that blooms today
Tomorrow will be dying.
Then James does a really cool singing-one-line-high and
a-totally-different-verse-low and we're into the long instrumental. As
usual, fingers fly, and the Johns and Mike don't fail to disappoint.
Derek does one TOTALLY RIDICULOUS FILL during this section. You won't
miss it. It probably should have not been in there.
More verses... there is NO FUCK WORD for those of you who didn't
like DT using the word FUCK... I guess you can celebrate. that line now
reads "I don't need your sympathy to get me through the day". Personally,
I find it equally viable either way, so no problemo.
A few more choice instrumental passages, and then we end with
that acoustic outro (though, being shorter, they don't "develop" it into
the masterpiece that the beginning intro is).
And then on to the rest of the EP!
Elton John's Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding sort of fell
flat on me because I can't stand Elton John, but I guess they aren't too
bad and most EJ fans will dig it.
Perfect Strangers was AWESOME! Incredible! Wow, this sounds good.
I can't believe I didn't know about this song already... is the Deep
Purple original anywhere near as cool as the DT cover??
The Led Zeppelin medley is tres cool as well, since I like Zep.
The parts from Achilles and SRTS are the best IMHO.
Then the BIG medley. It alone is worth the ticket price. Holy
shit, they did well. In The Flesh, masterfully done, then Carry On
Wayward Son (instrumental only, blah), then Bohemian Rhapsody, which was
pretty well done, then a GREAT bit of Journey's Lovin Touchin Squeezin, a
bit of Dixie Dregs, then a COOL ending with Genesis' Turn it On Again,
which ends really abruptly for effect.
In final, though I predict this won't even break into rotation on
radio, this album is EXCELLENT... any of 3 or 4 things on it is worth the
price right there, and the rest is a pleasant bonus. ACOS itself is
indeed a masterpiece. In order that our favourite band do somewhat well
with this, I would hope that Elektra would release Perfect Strangers and
maybe the first part of ACOS (like Rush did with 2112 Overture/Temples)
as singles to radio. Those could very well catch on. I wish DT luck on
their new album they'll be working on, and can't wait to hear it!!

I beg to differ...
In the KISS "Revenge" tourbook from 1992, there is a picture of Derek
(he played keys backstage for KISS on that tour), and he very visibly has
long hair. My guess is that either a) the short hair is relatively
recent (like in the past 2 yrs or so), or b) he wore a wig while he was
touring with KISS. Neither would really be a surprise to me. And, further,
neither makes any difference whatsoever regarding his musicianship and
what he will be bringing to Dream Theater.
Secondly, my roommate and I have OS/2 set up on his computer, so if anyone
has any questions regarding that, just email. Rather than get into a
technical debate about Windows vs. OS/2, let's everyone who is interested
please take it to a proper newsgroup or communicate via email.
This list has way too much irrelevant fluff already.

And therefore the way it is in the book is CORRECT, huh? There's no

that JP actually went through and checked and corrected every thing the
transcriber did, right? Even the simplest thing on the album (that being
the intro to the Mirror)??
Lemme tell ya somethin' about tab books -- they suck. I saw the I&W tab
book somewhere once, and decided to check it out. Forget time signatures

one, too.
So Eric Wolfe, the man who thinks that everything he reads is true and

I just downloaded a DT promotional package for Awake off the net. Has anyone
seen this? It is alright. Not the best but pretty good. It is interactive.
Has a lot of samples from the album and a funny spider that keeps reapearing
throughout the game. Also, I was wondering what the song Space Dye Vest is
about. I loving the haunting melody but the meaning to the lyrics escape me.
I can tell that Kevin Moore wrote it thoug. Excellent quotes and phrases. If
any help can be shed on this song I would appreciate it greatly.

Yesterday I was at the mall with my friends and we went into "The Wall"
music store. Generally when I go into a music store I check to see what
DT they have, if any at all. Usually I'll find one or two copies of I&W
and/or Awake. But to my surprise, and GREAT delight, I found something
different. They had a copy of Live at the Marquee. It shocked the hell
out of me. Well needless to say I snatched it up and my DT collection
grew once again. And to think, I almost didn't go to the mall that
night...

Hey 'jammers,
There are some interesting threads going on... thought I'd add my input.
I'm something like 80% Irish (3 of 4 grandparents are of Irish descent), and
the rest mixed with a little Scotch thrown in. I absolutely love potatoes,
but I don't have that whole drinking thing down just yet :)
I'm pretty much atheist (very Ayn Rand / RUSH influenced), but I'm never
bothered by religious stuff in songs. Religion definitely has it's place, and
to deny it's affect on music would just be insane! I agree with the guy that
posted "as long as it's not preachy..." I really like the version of
Oh Holy Night on Subconscious, which happens to be my favorite Christmas
song.
On a sadder note, I'm leaving my summer job to go home for a few weeks before
I start school again (I'm 19, a sophomore physics major at Trinity University
in San Antonio, Tx), so I will be losing net access. Bummer. See you all
in a few weeks!

Of course. Not a better player. Good hair does not a musician make. But
everyone would be better with long hair. Then there'd be no problems. You'd

To the guy who asked if anyone else out there wears earplugs, I do. I'm just glad I didn't have to learn the hard way. I used to not (simply because I was too lazy to get any), but after too many concerts when my ears were ringing horrendously, I figured I didn't want to lose any more of my hearing. I am not worried about looking like a wuss, either, because if anyone ever said anything, I'd just say, "Hey, at least I'll still have my hearing in twenty years." That reminds me of the Megadeth concert (please don't start the discussion again) when I had plugs and a friend of mine didn't. He was hurting after the first opening band, and I was doing just fine even after the show. Also, I have found that many times, earplugs help to make the sound more clear by filtering out much of the (bad) noise, thus clearing the sound up. Just my $.02.

On the "religion" (I don't really like that term), I am a Christian (member of the United Methodist Church, but don't necessarily hold to a particular denomination), though I am not into the legalistic stuff that a lot of so-called "Christians" are into. I think it's really cool that we can all come together here, regardless of faith, ethnicity, etc., and have some great discussions about something we all have in common (i.e. GREAT taste in music). It's cool that we can all be friends here.

MESSAGE FROM: MARTIN SCHOCH 8/262-6105, 1-301-803-6105 CONSULTANT, CUSTOMER SERVICE & MARKETING PRACTICE 6710 ROCKLEDGE DRIVE - BETHESDA, MD 20817 Subject: (U) > This is to the guy who wants to run OS/2 and Win 95 on the same system.... > > 2 points: > A> No, it's not possible <I don't think> > b> If it were, why would you want to? > Win 95 blows OS/2 out of the water! Well, since I work for IBM, I feel compelled to send my first post to the Ytsejam. The original append concerned running the 2 OS's on different hard disks. That should be no problem, provided that your system allows you to specify what hard disk you would like to have as your boot drive. While this is typically easier with a SCSI-based system which allows you to make this change rather easily, a number of IDE-based systems support this as well. If you start talking about running the 2 OS's on the same physical hard drive, then you would need something like OS/2's Boot Manager or Partition Magic to logically manage the partitions that you configure for the drive. In either case, you should be fine. I won't offend the Ytsejam with the proverbial "My Operating System is better that your operating system" thread. Now for some DT content -- Yes, I work for IBM. I'm 34 and have been a DT fan since '93 when PMU received its initial airplay in the DC area. DT was the "Breaker of the Month" band on 103.1 WKZL back when they were a progressive free-form rock station. While they featured PMU primarily during the month, I also caught TTT a few times and that clinched it for me. (By the way, they've since changed to the eclectic "let's play anything that we feel like playing" format, and I've changed to the "I'll never listen 103.1FM no matter where I happen to be in the world !") I've made it to both the Baltimore Pier Six and Hammerjack's shows in the past 2 years. Personally, I preferred the outdoor venue of Pier Six. It was easier to see and the sound was pretty good. In terms of background, I've been a percussionist ( a fancy way of saying I can play more than the drum kit !) for about 20 years. Besides enjoying the "big band" sounds of Buddy Rich and Maynard Ferguson's bands, like many others I started off with Rush and Kansas. In evaluating bands, I tend to work from three angles: 1) how much the drummer does to drive the song to a higher level, 2) the individual talents of all members, and 3) the ensemble sound that they're able to generate. Naturally, DT is a natural progression from the bands that I've enjoyed over the past 20 years and certainly score top marks in each category. Finally, some thoughts on the wonders of Ytsejam: 1) Favorite musical DT moment - Intro to Metropolis at Pier Six -- You're never quite sure how a band will sound live. Once the first note hit, I knew that I was in for a top-flight show. 2) Favorite non-musical DT moments -- Pier Six in Baltimore wasn't designed for Rock and Roll, much less DT. The majority of the ushers and attendents were middle-aged. A few of them came up to me during the show, took a look at me, and said " You don't look like you belong here !" Just goes to show you that DT fans come in all shapes and sizes, huh ? 3) Top DT song -- "Bombay Vindaloo"--- the stuff at the 4:00 mark is unreal! 4) Least Favorite DT Song -- SDV----- Sorry, Kevin !!! 5) Other bands -- Ytsejam helped me track down information on some new bands(Echolyn-- which I like), some bands that I had been aware of but had never bothered to track down (Marillion - just got a used "Fugazi" CD and I'm not quite sure), and some old favorites ( SAGA --- check out www.bonaire.com, Kansas -- "Live at the Whiskey" sounds OK as long as Steve Walsh wasn't singing - what happened to him ???, and ZEBRA -got their Live album and although Guy Gelso seems to go to the cymbal crash on the backbeat of 4 way too often, they still always impressed me.) Well, that's enough for now, I'm sure you'll agree. Thanks for reading/listening. etc. ----- Martin Schoch

I agree with you and Mike Portnoy, the Fuck should have stayed in. Thats the way Mike wrote it and he was IMO trying to make a strong point (ie: the Fuck in Operation:Mindcrime) and now the point will be, well, not so strong. All I was doing was to report what Mike had asked me to so please don't jump on me about that. Oh and heres whats in the Big Medley: Medley: In the Flesh (Pink Floyd) Carry On Wayward Son (Kansas) Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin (Journey) Cruise Control (Dixie Dregs) Turn It On Again (Genesis)

Just leave it in the SONG. > >Later, > >Andy
Excuse us God, were not perfect!!!
Also, "WhO the FUCK cares about the word FUCK"... from the response it created when we heard about it, I'd say probably 90% of the jammers here. So if it doesnt matter to you then dont waste bandwidth telling us NOTHING about something you don't care about!
