hi to all the US DT fans
in an interview i had with michael sadler in Paris for their European
tour he said to me this:

Q:Do you like bands like Dream Theatre and Queensryche?

M SADLER:I like both very much. We 're talking about doing a SAGA/DT tour
package in the US. I think it would be a great evening of music. If the tour
is succesfull we will then come back to Europe(with DT).

So isn't it a good news if it happens!!!

Ok, I'm just gonna run thru a coupla things that some people
may find important, or may not - either way, here it comes....

1.) I'm trying to organize the Birch Hill get-together. If you
are going to the Birch Hill and meet up beforehand, E-mail
me privately, I will post the location and time within the
next two weeks, both on the 'Jam and via personal E-mail.

2.) Anyone know what the Acoustic Dreams numbers are up to?????
I would really like to get it around my birthday (the 15th,
                  don't forget!!!!)

3.) Has anyone gotten the SUPERIOR CD from our fellow Ytsejammer
Bernd Basmer?? I strongly suggest it for anyone on here, and
it would be nice to see a fellow Ytsejammer have some success
with the amazing talent they have.....

            4.) Life blows.

5.) I think everyone at the 3 DT shows will be in for a surprise
because I'm thinking that they will play their new song (if its
done) at those shows. On the I&W tour, they had To Live Forever,
then they had ACoS, so I think (and boy do I hope) that their
                 new song is due! JOY!

                                            Later,

                                            Al Balkiewicz

i will be taping all three shows on DAT (or at least trying to) :) and
i know of a couple other people that are taping all three shows, and at
least one other person taping all three on DAT, so they should be some
    very well documented shows.

me and mike bahr have talked about releasing one of the shows as a 2cd set
for a limited edition for the jam. what do you guys think?

by the way, i finally found someone with DATs of dt german shows, and
one guy with one of the japan shows on DAT.

    Hi All,

I thought you folks might want to see this review of ACOS. It is from
the November Request magazine that I got free at some shitty record
store. Someone might have posted this already but here it is again:

"Dream Theater's ACOS is the ultimate in excess from a band of
resolute prog-rock throwbacks. The title track is a 22-minute opus
featuring plenty of dazzling instrumental bravado but not one
memorable hook. The remainder of the album consists of a set of the
band members' favorite cover tunes recorded live in a London club.
Their choices range between true classics (Zep's "Achilles Last
Stand") and dusty pomposities (Floyd's "In The Flesh?"), with an air
of pointlessness hanging over the whole thing. Nostalgia is least
effective when it sounds so passionless."

Can you believe this shit! Of course they go on later to give the new
Soul Asylum a rave review. Go figure. Anyway if anyone cares these
dolts have an e-mail address that you can write to: LetrToEdit@aol.com

I hope people found this interesting. Adios. See you all at the SOLD
    OUT El-N-Gee show.

    My first post:

I find it odd that a Dream Theater fan would want them to be anything other than what they are. Talk of removing the keys, talk of adding another guitar, talk of James as the proverbial weak link. I guess discussion is one of the axis' upon which our world turns, but I would suggest that the reason we like them is because of the chemistry they currently seem to have acheived. I was sad when Kevin left, but I like Derik. And with respect to the thread on Labrie's voice, I can answer that I did not personally buy their work until he took the mic. I won't say they would not have been as successful without him, or with another vocalist, but I could argue just that.

Dream Theater is a group whose material shows consideration, and composition. It is symphonic, and I beleive requires a singer with the capabilities of a James Labrie. All of this doesn't even speak to the notion of what the other guys in the group desired from their front man. They did wait on the right guy, almost chosing an instrumental format. Though as a vocalist myself, I blanch at the inherent insult of this phrase. James is not an Eighties metal vocalist. He trained Opera four years. While he does at times compromise the vowels in the interest of tone, and possibly projection, it has also contributed to the development of a style and distinctiveness for him. I'm sure he's multifaceted.

I met James at their Salt Lake I&W tour date. He is down to earth. And it is precisely his integration into their sound that has given voice to the textural background upon which his lines are sung. I personally have no use for chunk-a-chunk heaviness for its own sake. But when Dream Theater made this a part of their sound, I beleive they did so by using the emotion is evokes to advance whatever expression they are trying to convey. I train with David Kyle in Seattle, and through the last two years my appreciation for what Labrie does has only deepened. I, too, have heard transient listeners of DT remark, "They should loose the keys," and "They need a singer who . . . ." and "The drummer is too busy," and "The base player should show more energy on stage," and "The guitarist is only interested in speed. I want to express more than that with my playing." Ad Nauseum. Mostly, in my expereince, these comments break down in two ways: Intimidation and Unfamiliarity. The first is a personal problem I can't speak to, the second is the unfortunate byproduct of media. Media in the larger more damaging sense, such as MTV and most radio stations. I was a confirmed Poison fan until I joined a band that played a more progressive style. It took longer to appreciate, it wasn't immediately accessible, but the music is more gratifying. There are a lot of listeners like I used to be, who are buying what the radios are playing, cause, see, that's what everyone else is buying. Oh, well.

I can't listen to backgroud music, it has to compel me and take me with it, and it's melody lines must course off the lips of a vocalist who has the ability to thrill me, not just with high notes, but certainly not without them. James' training was well spent. Everytime he sings into the masque mine does almost resonate with him.

I fully agree with you here. Operation: Revolution was a cute idea, but there's no way it would persuade MTV to change their programming. I'm sure everyone here would be more than willing to support something like this. Also, with all the hype about the Internet and information highway, etc. the last while in the media, I think it would be the perfect way to catch their attention.

With the Internet growing at the rate it is, and the talk about how in the future, it'll force businesses to keep themselves honest, and the fact that it is maybe a bit foreign to these companies (well, maybe), perhaps there's a possibility that they'll take us more seriously, knowing that with 30 million people online, and growing by 15% each month, there is a very real possibility the campaign could have a lot of impact. Then again, would a company really be prepared to change their entire advertising and marketing strategy just because a group of people on the net don't like them supporting MTV like that?

But, as you say, we'd need someone to organize the whole thing, and would it really be worth it? Possibly, but I know I sure as hell would never want to organize something like this, but if someone out there wants to, I'd be happy to support it all the way.

    >at the complexity of their work. If you want a real shock, check out a >National Health album... 40 minutes of music like the instrumental break >in Metropolis.

    <DROOL...>

Could someone please tell me where I could get my hands on something by this band? I'm sure there -are- plenty of bands out there that are more talented and more complex than DT, I just wish it wasn't so hard to find good music. :(

    >I can't believe there are actually people out there who are willing to >criticize a vocalist for expressing some actual EMOTION in his/her delivery! >I can't for the life of me imagine why it's a bad thing to hear a singer

Zactly! The main thing that stands out on I&W, even moreso than the triggered drums for me, is James' vocals. They do nothing for me on that album. It just sounds too perfect, too un-emotional, too un-human. Awake and ACOS are much, much better in that respect.

Excuse me please. Have you listened to Scarred? Please explain to me your your definition is on dynamics. Maybe I need some schooling. Scarred is one of the tracks on Awake when DT does use dynamics. I think indeed, yes indeed it is the bestest mostest kick-butt song on Awake next to the beginning of Voices. Hi Everyone, All this talk of the upcoming concert and Ytsecon are making me very jealous. I was wondering if there is any possibility of a similar event here in the midwest when they come through? How would one go about setting this up with the band? Judging by where DT played the last time they came through Minneapolis or Kansas City would be the two choices. If there is anyone else in the Midwest is interested in this or has connections to the band, please drop me a line.

    Thanks Todd

The danger in saying that would be that I almost never advocate taking the masses' view of what's good and bad, but (!) in this case I agree. If Kev came up with stupid lyrics like "Hooks in the ceiling for that well-hung feeling" I would advise him to Give It Up. Of course, this is just an opinion. DT content? To the person who said that the CD+ (if it were done) would be about $50: (I can't find the original e-mail)

There is a new Rolling Stones CD I saw that's supposed to be in CD+ format. It said on the label on the CD that there was a bonus video and interactive material that can be played on a computer (which is what CD+ is supposed to be for). It didn't cost any more than a regular CD; it was about $12.99.

If the DT CD were a 2 CD set, it might cost $15 or so if you don't get it at one of those "chain" stores like MusicLand, Sam Goody, etc.

Thought I'd stop lurking and make my contribution to this:

On tours, Sammy plays guitar on "One Way To Rock" where he and Eddie trade solos; he plays acoustic on "Finish What Ya Started" and also when he does his solo song. On the "Live Without A Net" video, he also plays guitar on their cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll". Can't remember if he played guitar on any of the new stuff from "Balance" when I saw them at Wembley earlier this year.

    Jam on, people.

Seeing as how I am still resisting the temptation of conforming to popular activity by posting only what I dislike about DT, I figured I would do the usual and handle something differently than the guy before me did, ie Marc Respass. Hey, what can I say, I gotta be me.

    > From: mer@sol.iii.net (Marc Respass) > Subject: Berklee is no fucking guarantee!!!

After reading just the subject heading, I was suddenly hit with a flash of inspiration for another wonderful story. See what you think:

*************************************** Marc Respass, McLaughlin Of The Ytsejam ***************************************

Marc: Issue #1. DT isn't a jazz band. They aren't jazz players. They shouldn't play jazz.

Me: I could be wrong, but didn't they study jazz at Berklee?

Marc: WRONG!! BERKLEE IS NO FUCKING GUARANTEE!! YOU'RE A FUCKING IDIOT!!

Anyway, Marc brought up another argument that reminded me of an event that will probably offend a few people. But considering who I am, what does that matter?

    > > Might I remind you that Dream Theater is comprised of three > > men from Berklee? > > Big fucking deal! When were you at Berklee? What do you know of Berklee?

Okay, quick story. I'm sitting outside having lunch with several people, one of whom is a born-again Christian. We'll call this person Hubris. Anyway, Hubris is going on and on about a gospel vocalist named Susan Ashton, and how absolutely incredible her music is.

I ask Hubris, "Who's Susan Ashton?"

At this point Hubris looks at me like I'm an alien from another world.

"She's a Christian singer." Hubris says. "You've never heard of Susan Ashton?"

To which I reply, "No, I'm just a Roman Catholic. Guess that's why I've never heard of her."

Hubris then gives me a rather silent, hollow look and demands that I clarify my Catholicism, since I can't be all that Christian if I don't know who Susan Ashton is. I field her questions, then proceed to remind Hubris of the position of born-again Christians in the church as opposed to that of the stupid, naive, non-Susan-Ashton-listening-to Roman Catholics, one of whom is the pope himself...
