The hats sound pretty cool! Are these things fitted or adjustable?

Also, listening to LATM lately (Bombay Vindaloo) and I can't stand the jerk
sreaming "Play Status Seeker" at the start of the tune. Someone should've cold
cocked him to shut him the hell up!

O.K...so it's a violent response. But was the guy thinking he was in a Las
Vegas lounge where they took requests?LATER-

    Hello Jammers,

About 6 months ago Mike Burstin started a bad trader list which has the
name and information of the bad trader and opposite of it a list of the
people who have reported the person to the list. This way it helps to
    prevent abuse of the list.
    burstin@cs.brandeis.edu

was his e-mail address the last time I checked, he should have a recent
    copy of the list around.

    Later,
    Mike

    Hello Jammers,

This is just a quick comment on the Trevor Rabin discussion. I really
enjoy Trevor Rabin's music with Yes, but it pales in comparison to the
early 70's incarnations of Yes which were so damn good, it is
frightening. Trevor infused just a bit more pop into the band than it
needed IMO. Dream Theater doesn't need him. And he is off writing music
scores now after playing on a couple of tracks from Michael Jackson's
    His-Story (or whatever its called).

    Hello Jammers,

Someone asked, so here are the Top Notch Prog-Metal bands out their IMO

    1. Dream Theater (goes without saying<grin>)
    2. Fates Warning (check out No Exit or Perfect Symmettry)
    3. Queensryche (my favorite ones are Rage for Order and The Warning)
    4. Shadow Gallery (carved in Stone), great album, only weak spot is
lyrics (otherwise I'd rank them up there with DT)
    5. Threshold (Psychedelicatessan, Wounded Land) - one of my current favs,
they have elements from heavier to lighter metal, all musicians
are solid and can trade licks with the best of them, lyrics
are great IMO, the only weak spot is that the vocalist is average
            to above-average, not fantastic.
    6. Angra (Angels Cry) - great musical ability, excellent vocalist,
lyrics are above average. Very melodic metal.
    7. Leger De Main - some of the best technical (non-thrash) that I've
heard, above average female vocalist, the lyrics are Rush-like
and the only conplaint is that sometimes the lyrics and the
vocalist's delivery can be heartless on a couple of the songs.
    8. Saga (Generation 13) - This band has crafted THE concept album
for the year. It is well composed, contains many styles, and
is a full step forward for this band who has been around for
years and have made an effort to change their sound. It
scored really high in Mike Bahr's poll so many Jammers must
agree with me on this one.

These are the absolute musts IMO. There are several other solid bands:

Inferno, Divine Regale, Braindance, Process, Visionary, Ivanhoe

    In prog-rock check out:

Boud Deun (more of a jazz fusion band, they smoke on their instruments)
Happy Family (heavy technical fusion, some experimental stuff)
Marillion (one of the best, if not the best Neo-Progressive rock band)
Yes (but stay away from that Rabin stuff... <grin>)
King Crimson (you like NIN try THRAK, you like Peter Gabriel try
Discipline, you like heavy guitar-rock try Red,
you like classic rock try In the Court of the Crimson
                    King, something for everyone!)
Ozric Tentacles (Erpland, Live Underslunky are the way to go), this is
                    a funky psychedelic-metal band.

You can find info on many of these bands by checking out my Homepage and
    going into the music links.

    Hey guys,

    To the guy who wrote:

"Well, I am not totally sure what synthesizers Kevin used on the LIt video,
I didn't see it yet. But why in hell would you cover the logos on your gear.
That's like hiding your guitar so that nobody knows what it is. Come on."

This could be a contract thing. I didn't notice that he covered them over,
but if he were hypothetically endorsed by, say, Yamaha, and he really
prefers Korg, he might cover up the brands so as not to lose an endorsement
with Yamaha. I've seen guitarists do this in publicity photos before.
Another possibility is that no company endorsed him at the time of LiT and
he didn't want to give anyone free advertising. That may seen petty, but
it's big money for a company if their brand appears on a video like that.
Just my .02 cents. LAter guys!

thanks to ken for the yes info.

re; circular breathing- i believe winton marsalis can do it, and yes, it is
really sick and impossible to do. to quote from "godel escher, bach", it's
like playing 60 games of chess blindfolded SIMULTANEOUSLY and WINNING THEM
     ALL!!!!

i think kevin moore used a roland jv-900 as one of his boards, i forgot they
other he used. there's a small article on him in a keyboard magazine. i
forgot the date, but i think it's april 94 (the frank zappa tribute issue). i
know that in the article, he mentioned that he wasn't too familiar with midi
    and some other stuff.

tori amos tour dates- yay!!!! too bad i live in america, and not the uk!!!
also, you english bastards are all telling us about seeing satriani. damn
you, infidels!!! why isn't he HERE??? well, at least dt will be. :-) ps, if
anyone finds out when she (tori) will be in the us, let us (or me, at least)
    know.

i found this really twisted musical piece today called "voicepiece" that i
will send here shortly. any comments, or whatever, lemme know. thanks.

I'm getting sick of reading about issues in this forum that are in no
FUCKING way related to DT. If you want to rip into and insult other bands,
this is not the place for it, I thought that this was a newsgroup related to
DT and other related Prog subjects.I can also not beleive how many times
this comes out in a DAY, and how often it's the same people rehashing the
same old stuff. Sure, I like to communicate and listen to others ideas on
the 'jam, but if you're on this subject enough times for this newsletter to
come out 5 times a day, there is definetely(sp) something wrong, if you're a
student, when the hell do you study? If you're hooked up at work, does your
boss know how much time is spent on this?
Did you ever see William Shatner on Saturday Night Live, when he's at
the Star Trek convention? He walks up to the microphone and tells all the
fruitcakes in the audience "get a life, it's just a TV show"
It's just a band, yes they're fantastic, I've got all of their discs,
I've seen them from the front row of the Avalon in Boston, They all rule on
the respective instruments, but they are just a band, mortal, fallable, I
bet their worst mistakes are probably 10 times better than most musicians
best tries, but lets end this bickering of "whos best".
Let's try to calm down, and use this list for more constructive
efforts, or change the name of this forum to something else, for the name is
becoming misleading.I know I've probably made many opponents with this
statement, but I've listened to all of you, and now it's your turn to
    listen, to yourselves.

Todd (writing under Arthur Pendragn's address) asked about a midwest
convention. E- mail me (my firewall doesn't permit me to make initial contact)
regarding ideas. I'm in Chicago and I know of a couple others on the list
who're from here, too. I think it'd kick ass to set-up a gathering here or in
a nearby city the band visits.

Bafu....where'd you decide to use the name Hubris in your anecdote? Excellent
choice for the way you characterized the woman.

Roland (the Kraut from Germany) .... Say it loud!!: Hail to the REDSKINS!!!!
BTW, Michael Coghlan is a BIG Dallas fan!! (Sorry, Mike. Had to let him
    know!!):)

Please post the Extreme mailing list address!! THANX!!

Jill had an extremely interesting answer to Kyle's circular breathing
question. I am a singer and woodwind player. I am quite familiar with the
circular breathing technique for instruments (force are out of Louie Armstrong
cheeks while inhaling thru nose). But to do that for singing? I'd love to see
a demonstration because bringing air INTO your lungs while forcing air OUT of
your lungs (which is necessary for singing...period) seems to be a
contradictory act that can't happen. Are there tapes, books, Ripley's museums
with examples? I'd love to learn this just to freak people out!!! :) -- This
is a serious inquiry, not sarcasm.....really.

ILLINI 75, Duke's sorry, ACC, weak-assed hoops squad 65!!!! Chris Collins

    Hey jammers,

Sorry to clog up this list with this, but it is DT related.

    IMPORTANT!!!!

There was a guy who was offering to tape a pay per view DT concert from
Japan. I had corresponded with him a couple of times. I believe his name
    is Scott.

I just changed providers and accidentally deleted my old mail. If Scott (?)
could mail me, or if anyone has his address, please repond privately.

Many thanks to my fellow jammers!

I don't wanna see MTV play DT because they'd overplay them. I remember getting
sick of some really good songs in college because MTV played 'em too much. Now
that I'm in the real world, I don't listen to radio or watch much MTV ('cept
for B&B) so I can get sick of my fav. songs at my own pace, not MTV's. I think
air-time would be monumental for DT's financial success, so if they do make it
there more often I'd be happy. But being on MTV isn't the greatest thing for a
band. Lots of people watch "America's Funniest Home Videos" and I don't want
    DT there, either.

This is a quick plea for people to follow grammatix a bit better. Spelling,
etc., isn't that big of a deal....I know this is an international list. But
when people don't use capital letters, commas, periods, spaces...that kind of
stuff, it REALLY makes it hard to read. Any some of these posts actually have
some excellent insights. Just a thought. :)

After this past West Coast trip, everyone should know that Michael Jordan has
returned to 94% form. BEWARE!!! And if Rodman decides to put his uniform on
(PLEEEEEEZZZZ put SOMEthing on!!!) and play hoops, it could be scary. Mr.
Stern can send necessary trophies and hardware to:
    Chicago Bulls
    c/o Mike and Scottie
    Sheri Bertow Center
    Deerfield, IL 60624
Do you think DT would sing the national anthem as a barber shop quintet to
    open the NBA finals?

    A small request...

Go listen to the beginning of Innocence Faded. Right at the beginning, =
(Animation...) Does anyone hear a phone ringing? AHHHHRGGGGG!!!
I can't stand it. Whenever I listen to that song, I always get an urge =
    to go answer a phone.

    Michael C.!
Since you seem to be the big smarty pants about God and everything, one =
would think that you would at least know the most basic of all religious =
information. Christ is not God. He is God's son.=20
God had two sons, Jesus and Satan. They each had a plan. God chose =
Jesus's plan so he was sent down to earth, and Satan was cast out. I =
figured you'd know at least that much... Christ is God?...Sheesh!

    TRIVIA!!!

Who did the soundtrack for PCU?
The winner will get mentioned in my next post:)

What are you people talking about?

I have seen posts in which people are suggesting second guitarists and
new vocalists for DT. I have seen questions like "Should DT keep
James?", and "Does DT need Derek?" etc. Did anybody notice that DT kicks
ass the way they are now? Stop the insanity. No, Marty Friedman is not

Really? I thought it was kind of fun only saying half a sentence, getting
kicked off, and then having to come back to finish. It adds a genuine air
of suspense when someone is in the middle of saying something, and gets
booted out of the room. Makes you wonder what they'll say if they have the
nerve to get back into the room, finish their comment, then tell off their
    booter.

"Whoah! Bafu just got kicked AGAIN! Wonder what he'll say when he comes
    back in?"

"Hey, look at that! D-Man just kicked out ANOTHER person. I wonder what
they'll say to D-Man when/if they decide to come back in and face some
    more of this crazy shit?"

Yeah. A 13-year-old would include a write-bomb in the package.

All I've ever seen the bot do is show up and get kicked off by angry
people who hate ambient existences. I don't want to name names, but a few
people seem to like the "kick" feature a bit too much.

Did Nuggetman create the channel so we could chat? Or did Nuggetman create
the channel so he could play God? Has God made Nuggetman or Nuggetman made
    God?

#ytsejam is nice because you can say things not related to DT without
people getting upset and flaming you, but the Ytsejam Mailing List is nice
because you can say whatever you want without getting kicked of the
channel, mostly because this isn't an IRC channel. Ytse mailing list.

Is there anybody out there on the King's X mailing list? I've tried twice
to get on it but nobody responded. Maybe I've got the wrong address, I
don't have it on me now though. Oh, sorry about the non-DT content. Here's
some. How does Myung play so good when he spazzes so much when he plays?
He looks like a freak. I guess he's just really into it. Oh, this is
pretty cool. I'm an art major and for my final project in one of my classes
we have to illustrate something based on a story or a song so I'm doing
Metropolis and it's going to be really cool but I don't think anybody really
cares. Sorry for this stupid post. B'bye.

    Hello,
There seems to have been a mistake. I did not send a request to be
added to your mailing list. The computers here at UT Geo are for
public use and often people fail to update the sender's address.
Someone else requested your service but my address was listed as
    the return address.
Anyway, please remove TREX@utxsvs.cc.utexas.edu from your list.
    Thanks,

I know he used a Roland D-50 and a Roland JD-800 for both I&W and Awake. I do
not know what the third board is that he used on the I&W tour. I haven't been
able to get a good clean look at what configuration that board is. I imagine it
is probably either a Korg or a Roland something. I wondered too, why he would
put tape over the names of his boards. Must be a personal thing.

    Hi,

Just hours after I posted looking for Scott Cook's address, he went and
posted on the jam. So, now I have it.

Sorry to waste everyone's valuable space with my request.

    DT content:

I work in a record store, and some guy came in last week and bought Judas
Priest's "Stained Class" and the new Savatage. I asked if he had ever heard
Dream Theater. He hadn't, but mentioned he's a big Rush and Queensryche
fan. So,I talked him into buying Awake.

He phoned me back on the weekend to let me know he'll be back to get I&W and
ACOS in a couple of days. Yet, another new fan.

I love turning people on to DT!

    On with the jam!

Thanks to Robert Quezada, I now have my own copy of Subconscious on
cassette. I now have 7 pieces of Dream Theater music. I have:
WDADU, I&W, LATM, Awake, ACOS and Acoustic Dreams #353. I like it all.
I am eagerly waiting to get WDATU from Mike Bahr, #'s 112 and 113.
I've been playing some of the tapes I made of DT and early Genesis stuff
over the P.A. system. It sounds awful in the machine shop but, heck, I know
what songs I am hearing. There are places in the shop that you can hear
clearly. The real music freaks have all been asking, "Who the heck was
that?". I just smile and tell them Dream Theater and they say they have
    heard of them. Liars...
The guys I work with HAVE asked me to make tapes for them, so I will
probably do Acoustic Dreams for them and make them buy the rest. Just one
question...Is 'Live at the Marquee' still available? Bombay Vindaloo is a
great song that the guitar nuts want to try and learn. Good luck
    guys...<heh-heh>.
I was able to find WDADU at a place called The Quonset Hut here in the
Northeast Ohio area. The songs themselves are cool, but after hearing James'
voice on I&W, I can't handle Charlie. NO, I AM NOT TRYING TO START A DEBATE.
If you want to argue with me about this, e-mail me direct. Let's not clog
the 'jam with this needless conversation.
Talk to all of you later, George.

"Oh no" I thought, here we are again, some guys criticising someone
else for criticising someone else on an opion. I thought we were back in
the realms of the NIN and Shannon Hoon type arguements. But as I read on,

Wow!! Everything you said I think I've heard at least a million

times when talking about DT!!! I too being a musician, mallet
percussionist, take delight in the intricatness of DT music. I'll be

driving along in my car and just enjoying their music for what it is

without thinking abiut it to indepth but then something will catch me

and drag me in. I listen to all the parts and how each, by
themselves, are complex yet work perfectly with the ensambles sound.
Now from praise to question: A few Jams back one of you, I'm
unsure who it was, said that they met Mike Portnoy at a convention or

something like that, and that he divulged his method of counting
complex rythms to you. I was wondering, if you'd be so kind, if
you'd share it with us (most importantly me!! :>)if you remember. I

    thank you greatly.
    Take care all
