Thanks to all who posted kind words for me giving a description of this
video. Will Kriski asked if the video had any on-screen notation
(right?), and sadly it doesn't. Most of everything Petrucci plays is
notated in the book. I say _most_ because there is a solo in which
the first minute is notated and then he goes off. Most of what he plays
is easily seen due to the quality of the closeups. Some of his variations
in the exercises are also not notated.
To the guy asking about keyboard videos, I know they exist but can't
recommend any (since I haven't seen any). Some Chick Corea videos, jazz
videos...I'm sure I've seen some advanced videos for keyboard available.
Hope that helps!

Hi all
just back from a little trip to the homelands (England, that is), and I'm
catching up on the backlog of Jams from the past five days. Some interesting
stuff going on out there. Here are my comments (forgive me if I don't mention
the contributors by name: I'm sure you will know who you are).
I especially liked the contribution about 'chilling out' and the fact that the
boys from DT are just normal people who happen to play some very good music.
Excellent. Perhaps some politicians and dictators would like the grovelling
servility that some people display towards DT, but I doubt if the boys do.
Ten out of ten.
The religious wars seem to be hotting up nicely again. Stuff about not being
human if we don't believe this or that, people claiming to be able to see deep
down in my soul and my heart etc. Telepathic christians? Interesting concept.
If they could see into my heart, all they would find would be a bit of muscle,
a couple of fairly nasty-looking valves, a healthy coating of cholesterol and
a few other bits and pieces. As for souls, I don't have one, never did, never
will. There are, however, some good bits about religious philosophy and
comparative religion appearing - keep 'em coming. Never trust a man who lets
his god tell him how to f**k (not mine, I saw it on a tee shirt).
Do the letters IRC stand for 'I rule, cool'? A good dose of reality is much
more fun than all this computer stuff. I sometimes wonder how long some of the
people out there could last during a power cut before the men with the one-armed
tight-fitting canvas jackets came round.
I also heard a good new band yesterday, they are called Theatre of Dreams or
something like that. I heard two songs, one about a cow being milked, which I
think was called Pull My Udder (the song, not the cow), and the other was about
scarring birds away from milk bottles and was called Lifting Sparrows Off The
Cream. Is this band any good, and are the members being sponsored by the Milk
Marketing Board? I think there are also a couple of tracks called A Fortune In
Flies, and A Change Of Trousers by the same band.
By the way, is Bafu Vai a four-legged dog (there are some with only three: check
out the new Alice In Chains video), or did I misunderstand this whole logical
proof of god's existance stuff?
stay safe and happy listening

Wow,
I am really impressed by Al Balkewicz.
I love the way he has taken over 10 months to record 2 videos and mail them
to me, yet I have still received nothing.
I love the way he responds to my emails asking what the deal is.
I love the way he acknowledges me posting to the jam saying he has ripped me
off.
I like how he has time to organize so get together before one of the DT
shows and has time to reply to email by people who want to go to it, but
refuses to acknowedge me at all.
Do others think that it is all right for me to be pissed off about this?
I sent my tapes to him within a week to him after we made a deal. He
promised to get his tapes out that weekend.
_10_ months later I have nothing.
I know he was in an accident 3-4 months after we made the deal. Then he
vanished for a few months and has now been back at least 2 months.
I know that dubbing 2 videos requires a brain surgeon, but come on....
-----------
Do not trade with anyone by the name of Jeremy Haynes of Sue Moscardino or
anyy one at 6 Kish Pl in Wallingofrd CT. He/She/They have ripped off many
people.
-----------
Well if you trade with Al Balkewicz, you risk being ripped off as well.
Thanks for allowing me to vent.
Did I mention that the only reason I traded with Al Balkewicz was because
I decided to be nice since he kept hounding me (he had nothing I really
wanted). I figured another DT video and Yngwie video would be ok...

Subject: You do intend to eventually have DT on the DT mailing list?!
Dear Jammers,
I was just thinking about how far the Ytsejam has gotten off
target. I know not much is going on with DT right now, but still it
seems that all that is happening now is complaining.
One problem is that there is such a diversity of people on here.
That could be something good, but right now it is working against us.
The more I think about it, though, there has always been complaining about
the content, as long as I can remember....
--> Jam: Here is the tab for .....
Response: Please keep this music stuff off the Jam. Not all of
us are musicians.
--> Jam: What kind of equipment does .... use?
Response: Didn't I just say we aren't musicians?!
--> Jam: Have you heard of this band ....?
Response: Please only talk about DT on this list.
--> Jam: Let's talk about the meaning of this song.....
Response: Read the FAQ
or < the eternal silence >
--> Jam: Here are my top five ....
Response: Who cares?! And what does this have to do with DT?
--> Jam: Should DT replace James?
Response: Who cares?! Let's talk about the music.
--> Jam: DT sing about God.
Response: God bless you.
--> Jam: Atheists don't believe in God.
Response: God doesn't believe in atheists.
My point is, although I wish we would just talk about DT, it seems
that for every thread on this list, there are always a group of people
who think it shouldn't be on there. I guess if everybody had their way,
there wouldn't be anything to talk about! Go figure....
So on the one hand, diversity is good. But on the other hand,
this is still the DT mailing list, and I'm pretty sure most of us signed
up to learn and talk about DT, right?
Maybe it would be a good idea if everybody thought about what this
Jam _is_ supposed to be about. Maybe somebody who likes doing surveys
could collect everybody's opinion on this. For example, here is the
things I'm interested in discussing:
1) Guitar related issues regarding Petrucci and DT
2) Products available of DT (boots, songbooks, etc.)
3) Team-tabbing of DT songs not published
4) Bands that sound _similar_ to DT.
Now, obviously, this is what _I_ want; not everyone would want this. But
I imagine that there are probably clusters of people, who if they sat
down and thought about it, have particular things they look for in the
Jam. I don't mean as in a list of rules, but we ought to think is the
reason why we read the Jam to look at top 5 band lists and religious
debates?
Now I have nothing against talking about religion. I am a
Christian. And atheists don't intimidate me. But we have people
talking and not listening, and in that case, it is a waste of time
and energy. Nobody is convincing anybody of anything.
I would be interested in knowing why others of you read the Jam.
What are you interested in finding in the Jam? Maybe then we could get
back on target and start talking about DT again!
Is the commercial over with yet?

Just a reply to Lars' post about the Malmsteen section. I never said there was
anything wrong with the section itself, it just sounds a lot like Yngwie. And
in light of the new version of ACOS, the song works just as well without it.
Sure, it would be cool in another song, but it just added to the string of riff
s that made up the original ACOS, albeit they were cool riffs. It could be com
pared to the intense solo sections of Metropolis, but they are put together in
one coherent whole in of themselves. ACOS was peppered with a bunch of smalle
r solo sections based on unrelated material, whereas now, it makes more sense a
s a coherent whole. So there it is. I'm sure I'll catch some shit for this, s
o, you know where to find me. later

Hi there!
I have a question. I need some help identifying some bits of
song lyrics. If you recognise some of 'em, can you email me
personally? They are supposed to be really difficult to
identify, so it's quite a challenge!
"Letters feast the smell of cooked flesh; last scent of sweet death"
"I love you, I love you my little porno slut"
Hint: The two above come, alphabetically, before "Gathering".
"Rise through the gate, Iak Sakkath from depths beyond the sky"
"Sadness, despair sometimes the things I cherish"
"Love crushing, skulls smashing in the vice of Hell"
Hint: The three above are between "Gathering" and "Orphanage".
"Schizophrenia, paranoia, insane death rests in pain"
Hint: This one comes between "Paradise Lost" and "Sodom". Might
this be Sepultura?
"Oooooh, ooooh, you've always been a good friend of mine till you
said farewell"
Hint: This one comes after "Uriah Heep".
Cheers!

Effective 12-11-95, ALL orders for the Awake in Japan '95 video will delay in
shipping until 12-26-95. The line at the post office is getting too long with
everyone shipping out presents. I will continue to make the dubs, they just
won't be sent out until 12-26. ALL orders I have received as of 12-9 have
been sent out. Also I have hed problems with people sending me checks, so
from now on ALL CHECKS WILL BE RETURNED!!!!!
I'm sorry if this seems harsh, but that's my policy.
Hope everyone has a good holiday season. Take care

Hey, here is somethin I don't think has been discussed about IRC yet, What the

Mine's "Stranger"
Long story how I got the name, don't take it cause I'm admin at another diner

well. We got enough Stranger's for the time being.

Hey all:
he he. That subject usually draws some attention.
This is just one guy talking, but I like all the different subjects and non-DT topics that everyone seems to get involved with in here. I disagree with the people that say this list should stick to DT related topics only. I live in Iowa, in the heartland of the U.S.A., where hardly anyone i've meet has heard of Dream Theater, and don't have a clue as to progressive rock is. This is the ONLY place i get to read and learn about Dream Theater and other progressive bands. If it weren't for you, I may not have known about ACOS. Which, by the way, hearing this song was the closest thing to a 'religious experience' that i've had since the first time i heard _metropolis_. Unfortunately, I was driving my car down I-80 at a nice cruising speed. I had just finished listening to_surrounded_, and damn near drove off the road. By the time _metropolis_ was finished playing, i had parked my car on the shoulder because i emotionally didn't have the strength to continue on. I was drained, but in a GOOD way. I'm still trying to recover from this phenomenon, but i'm afraid everytime i listen to DT, the symptoms keep coming back; cold sweats, bodily shakes, my brain thinking "how the hell is that possible", etc........
Sorry. I got kinda lost there for a minute. I wanted to say that i also enjoy reading about everyone's beliefs. I AM NOT, IN ANYWAY, A RELIGIOUS PERSON, but i do have a strong religous upbringing. I don't see any of the discussions here as being 'shoved down my throat', which if i thought they were, you'd most definitely hear about it.<<grin>> I enjoy reading most of what you folks write. The only time i get irritated is when i see an email in capital letters with swear words everywhere threating their unsubscription. Hey, if you don't like what you see, don't be a dumbass; either unsubscribe or come up with a new thread. Ranting and raving and cussing and carrying on like a 3 yr old won't change anything. It'll just make you feel and look like an idiot.
Enough said. Talk to you later.
