I was just watching the Rangers game and could faintly hear DT material
playing in the background. So of course I turned up the volume and sure
enough it was the intro to "The Mirror". If I sould exited, it's because
I am. I listen to the radio all the time and have NEVER heard a DT song.
Weird that the first time I heard it played publicly was at a Ranger
game. Oh well. Now I feel better that I was able to tell someone...

Ok, here's the deal, since no one has pointed this out, and I may
be the only moron to get RIP magazine anymore, here we go. There
is a review of COS in the episode (edition, whatever) and I am going
to probably violate some copyright law by reprinting it without the
express written consent...anyway, the writer is Sandy Masuo and it
is in the January 1996 issue. Go out and by it! (covermybuttlikeMike-
    speak). Here it is:
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
!! (Denotes two "stars" or whatever, out of five)

    DREAM THEATER:
A Change of Seasons (East West)

This album is a double-edged sword. Purportedly
a response to perennial demand for a live ver-
sion of the band's demi-operatic rock opus A
Change of Seasons, it does seem to capture
them at their best. The problem is that at their
best, their greatest accomplishment is providing
a stunning example of why progressive rock was
    such an ill-fated genre.

"Seasons" is a prog-metal epic in all its glory,
full of bells and whistles, bongos, pianos and
endless blistering guitar runs. The stylized emo-
tions run high, and James La Brie soars along in
vocal overdrive. The grinding guitar squalls are
broken up by spells of rococo swaggering, a
minstrel interlude that begs for a Spinal Tap-ian
drove of dancing dwarves and, finally, a fiery
recapitulation before a dramatic close. There's
barely enough time to catch your breath before
"Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" ensues,
followed by "Perfect Strangers," both of which
come off like some hyperbolic combination of
Journey, Elton John and Styx channeling "Layla."
The Led Zeppelin medly that follows is actual-
ly refreshing, thanks to focused songwriting that
keeps the chops-o-rama in check. All of this is
more or less aprelude for the aptly named "Big
Medly," which combines Pink Floyd's "In the
Flesh," Kansas' "Carry On My Wayward Son,"
    Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," Journey's "Lovin'
    Touchin' Squeezin'," Dixie Dregs' "Cruise
Control" and Genesis' "Turn it on Again." Dream
Theater adeptly replicate each song seg-
    ment... but something's still missing.

It's not that Dream Theater don't have feeling.
There's plenty of zesty rock-n-roll spirit behind
the music, they just never inject it into the music.
As with the vast majority of progressive rock,
when it's all blustered past, you're left wonder-
ing what the fuss was about.

In an attempt to get all this religious stuff off the jam, lets all talk about what DT should do next tour they have on show... someone already brought this subject up, but lets all comment on it now...

I can tell you one of the coolest stage setups ever was Yes's stage in 1974 on their Relayer (great album by the way, those who like DT's Metropolis jam would love it) tour. It sort of captured the whole theme of the album and yet it was really cool at the same time. You know the cover with all those rock like formations? Well it was like that, but the rocks had lights inside of them that could change colors. If you've seen the YesYears video you know what I'm talking about. When Alan White would hit his snare drum during the war part of The Gates of Delirium, the colors would all change at the same time and of course you know White really pounds away in parts of that war part. And they had all those weird objects that Roger Dean always painted in their album sleeves hanging around the stage.

Or perhaps LeBrie should follow suit with Peter Gabriel, Fish, and Geoff Tate and dress up in certain costumes. Especially if the next DT album is a concept album.

Is the evangelists mailing list? - oops- this is the DT mailing list. My bad. You guys are confusing me with all this theology. I thought Bafu was God? Does that mean Jesus is Bafu Jr.? I bet Jesus is a big DT fan! I was thinking(hard to believe, isn't it), wouldn't it be cool if DT dressed up in Gwar-type outfits for the next tour? Or wear polyester leisure suits? Or maybe make their hair like that Rancid dude? Or for you big religious fans, they could dress like monks and cut their hair like Fryar Tuck? Now for a non-DT moment. Does anybody know why Daimond Darrel is now Dimebag Darrel? Just curious. Hey, DT should cover some Pantera, like By Demons Be Driven, Cowboys From Hell, or 5 Minutes Alone. Oh, wait a minute, I forgot it's impossible for James to sing that shitty. Don't get me wrong, I like Pantera, but Anselmo sounds like he was in some sort of boating accident or factory mishap. The food analogy is an excellent one. I enjoy a lot of different kinds of foods. I particularly enjoy very spicy food. :)

Most of you probably have a good idea of what I think about the current state of guitar music. But if you're interested, I have, IMHO, something well-thought-out and non-confrontational things to say. I'll be happy to clue y'all in if you e-mail me privately.

However, this brings up another point. The music press likes to perpetuate a "grungers vs. shredders" rivalry. Whenever a guitar magazine runs an article/interview of someone like J. Petrucci, Satch, Vai, Skolnick, or Malmsteen (rare as it seems nowadays), the interviewer always asks a question designed to generate a response like, "It's wrong to criticize technique! I'm damn proud to have a guitar rig that lights up with a million lights every time I hit a note or harmonic squealy! Those Seattle bastards should die!" Of course, our very own John P. responds in a mature, classy way, Malmsteen has taken the bait every time and launched into a lengthy tirade against the "MTV and McDonalds culture." Now what the fuck is that? Duh, it's the media again. They have to generate controversy. Silly me, I should've known.

BTW, my guitar rig only has FIVE lights.

All right. I haven't really posted much in a while, and I'm buggerin' to tell the whole Ytsejam what's on my mind.

I picked up Shadow Gallery's _Carved In Stone_. The good things I have to say about it have already been said. I don't feel the need to make an expression of redundancy. Though I will reiterate one thing: "SG is DEFINITELY worth a listen." At first listen, I liked it a lot. I wouldn't call myself a fan yet, but I imagine the CD will really grow on me soon enough. Though it's safe to say to all the SG fans on the jam, "you've converted another one."

How 'bout them Dolphins! Marino broke another one of Fran Tarkenton's records. I started getting a little nervous then. <G> It wasn't too late for Bono and crew to rally at that time.

    See ya at Birch Hill.

Hi there you all DT fans ! Yes, IBANEZ has just released a new signature model : the JPM 100. I've just tried it this week-end in Luxemburg through a Peavey 5150. It can tell you it just rules. It covers the widest sound range I've ever heard. from soft jazzy sounds to the hardest metal... It was black with some kind of coloured faces on it, the little problem concerns its price : it's around 55.000 BEF, so that's around 2000 USD !! But if you consider the quality of the instrument, it's worth it... I'd like to hear from people who've got such an instrument or who've tried it once in their life ! I personnaly own a 540s from Ibanez, I used to think it was a very good guitar but since then I cant stop dreaming about the JPM100. ( By the way, the meaning of JPM is John Petrucci Model ! )

To the guy who complained about Mike's drum mix on the LiT video:

I hadn't actually noticed that Mike had his drums mixed in reverse, but here's an idea: Maybe he had them mixed that way so that they they came out of the PA mixed the way he hears them, i.e. floor toms from the right channel, snare from the left etc.

    Just a thought.

    >>What's so different between the internal conflict presented in Dream Theater's lyrics and the interal conflict within the Ytsejam over God?

The difference is is that the list is not a place to sort out personal religious feelings, its not a place where you try to "teach" people about your religious feelings, nor is it a place to learn about who God is.

    >>As for the current religious discussion, believe it or not, I think this IS, in a way, relevant to Dream Theater. Think about some of the themes that Dream Theater has expressed in their songs. Some of it has to do with religion.<<

I don't think it does. I seem to find fault in this kind of reasoning. This is like saying that (with relation to the current religion discussion) that because JP owns a dog that talking about dogs is okay to talk about on the list. True, when we talk about God (more specifically religion) with COMPARISON to Dream Theater lyrics this should be acceptable just as it has in the past. However, the current discussion of religion/God on the jam is talking about Christianity and completely unrelated DT topics. Religion and DT = good. Religion/God & personal religious feelings (that aren't pertinent to the DT topic at hand) = not good/unacceptable for a DREAM THEATER LIST.

Additionally, the manager said that it will be marked as 21+ and is sold at the new special door price of (bend over) $15. If someone is interested in it, let me know (Bahr, Warren ??). Sorry about the subject....just wanted to grab all of your attention.

First things first...last time I checked, this was called the "Ytsejam"....unless I am mistaken, that refers to DREAM THEATER. Nowhere in that title does it say God (although reading it backwards you do get Majesty...) or anything spiritual. As many other people have said, I'm sure that there are other places for you all to go if you want to preach what you feel is the good word. But I think that in the last ten posts I may have found three or four messages worth reading. This is because all of you GOD DAMN BIBLE TOTING ASSHOLES KEEP TYING UP THE FUCKING JAM!!!!! GO HOME AND PRAY TO YOUR PAGAN GODS IF YOU MUST, BUT LEAVE US THE HELL ALONE!! WE DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR BELIEFS!!!! Besides, everyone has their own set ideas and there's no way that anyone is going to be able to change anyone else's mind. So PLEASE....leave the bible at home.

On to better things: Congrats to the few who took a stab at my last lyrical challenge and found out that it was indeed "Gimme the Prize" by Queen. Of course I must now move on to another lyrical challenge...even you bible toters will like it:

"Tell me Jesus, are you angry? One more sheep has just gone astray A hardening of hearts turning to stone Wandering off so far from home"

Good luck to you all on that one. Now back to the old subject at hand. I understand that there is no new DT material to talk about since the new album isn't out and their next couple of shows aren't for awhile yet, but I was under the impression that we could talk about other Prog bands here as well. Isn't that a little better than all this God bullshit? I'm not trying to flame one person in particular because I'm sure he/she who started this whole thing never thought it would get this far out of control, but when I joined the Jam (#1153), it was filled with interesting material and INTERESTING debate...there were no debates that went on for weeks at a time.

So in closing I just want to say one more time....PLEASE leave your crucifix on the end table and let's bring DT back to the Jam....

Someone had noted they were looking for people to round out their DT tribute band. What are Jammers' feelings on these kinds of bands. I know this had been discussed on the Ryche's SiD, but I don't remember it being here. Some bands (like the Ryche) can't stand tribute bands, seeing them as rip-off artists. My opinion is mixed. Some are truly entertaining and many are blow-offs. Your thoughts?

Also, PLEASE sned me an e-mail if you're interested on getting a Midwest Ytsecon infrastructure going. Who knows when it'll be needed, but it's a good idea to begin logistics. I'm in Chicago and I saw someone post from Milwaukee. Let's at least talk about it off the Jam. LATER-
