Thought you'd all like to have a look at this posting I found on the
alt.music.marillion newsgroup. BTW the Headbangers Ball mentioned at the
bottom is the MTV Europe version (yes, we still have a metal show on MTV
over here).
------------------------------------------------------------------
Although not a long-time fan of Dream Theater, I had heard a
couple of their albums and been favourably impressed. My
colleague, Patricia, who had lent them to me was well aware that
I was a die-hard Yes fan, however. So, when as a Dream Theater
fanzine subscriber, she obtained a couple of tickets for their
invitation-only covers show, "Uncovered", at Ronnie Scott's in
Soho on 31st of January, where they would be joined by former Yes
guitarist Steve Howe, I leapt at the chance of attending.
I knew that Dream Theater would be playing music by the bands
that influenced them, and that they would be joined by members of
a few of those bands, but that was all. After a slight delay in
opening the doors, we filed in, past the mobile recording studio
parked in Frith Street outside the club, and into the cramped
interior, pausing only to pick up a complimentary (thanks guys!)
drink on the way.
We immediately spotted Ian Mosely and Pete Trewavas, Marillion's
drummer and bassist respectively sitting at the back. One of our
party approached them and they revealed that their guitarist
Steve Rothery would be joining Dream Theater on stage, and that
their singer Steve Hogarth was also present. Keyboardist Mark
Kelly *wasn't* there, however - he was in the studio working hard
on the new Marillion album, which sounds like it might just come
out on schedule this time...
I'm told that several past and present presenters of ITV's "Noisy
Mothers" were present. There were video cameras flanking the tiny
stage, which was shortly graced by MTV Europe's Vanessa Warwick,
presenter of "The Headbangers Ball" who introduced the
proceedings. Dream Theater pushed their way to the stage through
the crowd and kicked off with an impressive version of an Elton
John song with a refrain like "Love In Tatters/Shreds/Pieces".
Singer James Labrie then repeated his prediction that "This could
be interesting", before keysman Derek Sherinian pushed his
Hammond to the limit with Jon Lord's introduction to Deep
Purple's "Perfect Strangers". The first song I recognised, it
showed just how much care the band had put into their cover
versions - close your eyes and it could quite easily have been
Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore on stage. A U2 song (with
the only false start of the evening) followed, before drummer
Mike Portnoy announced that "this is from one of my favourite
drummers". A Led Zeppelin medley with a difference followed, as
the introduction to "The Rover" led (to my intense delight)
into "Achilles Last Stand" and ultimately "The Song Remains The
Same".
The Rush song that followed was a surprise - "Tears" from "2112".
Then the first of the night's guests took the stage - Barney, the
vocalist from Napalm Death. He "sang" a Metallica song, which
although not exactly my cup of tea, was certainly enjoyed by
everyone on stage.
I was overjoyed to see Dream Theater joined by Steve Hogarth, who
sang a duet of The Beatles' "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" with Dream
Theater's James complete with all the "shoop, shoobidoos" and
"bang bang bangs". Good fun! Then Steve retired behind the
keyboards as Steve Rothery joined the band for Marillion's
"Easter". Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci even added a
second solo to the end. The Marillion atmosphere was made
complete by a few shouts for "Grendel" and even "Supper's
Ready" from the crowd...
My musical taste being what it is, I was completely knocked out
when James and Derek performed Tori Amos' "Winter". I suspect
that made a grand total of three Tori Amos fans in the club,
including myself, which made it even more special for me.
The feeling that I and Dream Theater have identical record
collections was then reinforced when, to my utter disbelief,
amazement, and joy, I heard the opening notes of UK's "In The
Dead Of Night". John Petrucci's versatility really
impressed me, as he got Alan Holdsworth's solo down note-for-
note. I thought I'm died and gone to heaven, and at this stage
would have been happy to...
But the party continued, and Steve Howe joined the band to a
rousing reception. He took the now customary couple of minutes to
get his red finished Gibson "The Les Paul" set up without buzz
and I though "Oh no - he's going to throw a wobbly" as I knew
Steve isn't very happy when his equipment let him down. I needn't
have worried. Within seconds, the intro to Yes' "Machine Messiah"
from "Drama" heralded a superb instrumental medley that went
through significant portions of "Machine Messiah", "Heart of the
Sunrise", "Close To The Edge", "Siberian Khatru", and finally
"Wuurm" from "Starship Trooper". The anticipated appearance of
Rick Wakeman didn't happen, but Derek Sherinian proved himself
more than up to the job, especially on the harpsichord solo
on "Khatru". Also, John managed to copy Steve's solo licks on
"Wuurm" to their mutual amusement. Breathtaking.
A rather demonstrative audience member from Tyneside then
lambasted Dream Theater on their failure to play other parts of
the UK than London. Whether they understood a word of what he was
saying is doubtful, but the accepted his advice with good grace!
The final medley kicked off with a grand rendering of Pink
Floyd's "In The Flesh", progressing via Kansas (it was the track
that Mark Kelly chose on "The Friday Rock Show" in 1988 when he
and Fish went on to promote "Clutching At Straws" if that's any
help at all...), Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", Dixie Dregs, and
finally, bringing a smile to my face, the song to end all medlies
Genesis' "Turn It On Again", at least the chorus and ending of
the live version.
And that was that. I vowed to try and see Dream Theater when they
play their own material which I look forward to discovering it
all the more. I had seen some brilliant playing and singing, and
been delighted to have gone to a show expecting to hear "Tom
Sawyer", "Roundabout" and "Kayleigh" and been rewarded with much
more esoteric and (if I might exercise some critical judgement)
better material. I'm very grateful to Dream Theater for deciding
to do it, and also to Patricia, for giving me the ticket (and
getting me Steve Howe's autograph later, which is where we found
out what guitar he was playing...)
The show will be featured on "Noisy Mothers" this Friday, and
on "Headbangers Ball" some Sunday soon.
Dave.

I would just like to say that I agree totally with Chuck about the
Shrapnel albums "Scenes/Introduction" that Marty Freidman has so recently released. It shows this performers versitality in music going from New Age
Kitaro type tune right into anthematic passages with some very intriguing guitar lines. It's blow's me away how this one man goes from Cacophany to Megadeth and then relaxes himself on "Scenes/Introduction". Do check it out!

Hey Gang,
Here's a few of my thoughts on the latest threads:
1. Everyone needs to stop bashing everyone else's tastes in music.
Personally, I hate Megadeth, Pantera, and NIN, but I'm not going to flame
those who do like them. Let's all talk about what we DO like.
2. In America, we have this neat thing called freedom. That means you have
the freedom to love FW or hate FW. Some of us are going to love them, some
are going to hate them. Let's drop the issue and move on.
3. On a more positive note, I noticed someone made a reference the other day
to a great band called 24-7 Spyz. I love them! I thought I was the only
24-7 Spyz fan on the planet earth. 24-7 Spyz is an R&B/Funk/Metal band that
sounds pretty similar to Living Colour, with maybe a little harder sound.
If you like Living Colour, check out 24-7 Spyz.
4. As far as the youngest DT fan goes, a good friend of mine may have the
title clinched. His 9 month old daughter will sometimes wake up crying in
the middle of the night-he gets her up and takes her downstairs and puts I&W
in the tape deck. Once the music starts, she stops crying - and no other
music soothes his daughter like DT.
5. The job thread- I'm a computer network administrator.
6. I've noticed that a lot of 'Jammers are musicians. I play guitar and
electric bass. Those of you who have done surveys- have you ever gotten an
idea how many 'Jammers are musicians? I bet the percentage is near 50%.
7. I'm a faithful 'Jam reader, but somehow I've missed out on the details
of the forthcoming (April?) DT EP. Does anyone know exactly when it's going
to be released? How many songs are going to be on it? Is Eve going to be on it?
8. All of you UKers that went to the covers show, you OWE us a post. ALL
of you. Let's see 'em.
9. I need to buy a copy of Live in Tokyo (yes, I know, shame on me for not
having it already). Where's the best/cheapest place to get it?
Later,
Clarke

I guess I missed it, but what is the extra track on the import of "Awake?"
Also, what other songs are on the singles for "Caught in a Web" and "The
Silent Man?" I'm having trouble finding these two, but I did find "Lie."
"Lie" and "Caught in a Web" have both gotten some air play here in the Lehigh
Valley (Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA). Of course, I heard them at 3:00 am
or on the Community College station. "Radio needs an enema!" Didn't the
Joker say that?
What is the "official" guest list for the cover show? Last I heard, it was
Steve Howe, Glen Tipton, and Steve Rothery. I sure the tape recorders will
be humming that night. Anyone who goes, PLEASE post what was played, who was
there, and availability of a copy of the show!! The only cover I ever saw
them play was "Oh, Holy Night" in Philly back in Dec. 1992.
I have to thank some of yous for recommending Magellan. I just picked up
"Impending Ascension" and I think it's fantastic. I hope I can find the
first one. Let us know when you get a date for the new one. Thanks.

Hello Ytse Jam subscribers!
To the person who asked about the inherent differences in JP's guitars<other than color of course>I have a possible answer, so here goes:
Alternate tunings are out, because all of DT's WDaDU and IaW material is in standard tuning, as well as all their Awake stuff, which is either in standard or in standard 7 string. Besides, D-tunings are too trendy right now<Kidding>.
Pickup configurations <the magnets that make the guitar sound> are probably the same, considering that they are both the Ibanez USA Custom, the JP gutar of choice.
I would assume that, because on the IaW tour JP changed guitars between TTT and To Live Forever; by the end of TTT the guitar was *sooooo* horrendously out of tune due to his Whammy Bar acrobatics at the end of the long solo at the end of TTT live, that rather than go into a mega-clean intro like the one in TLF with all his strings tuned to the wrong pitch, rather than in fourths, where they belong, he simply switches to the pink/grey/white guitar.
I hope this helps, and if Ive insulted your intelligence, I humbly apologize. Keep jamming!

that's exactly how i feel....thanks for backing me up.
there are actually only a couple of parts that i don't like in the song.
the 'beginnings get complicated...' part, and the part where james is
singing with such a high voice that you can't make out the words.
it's not that the song doesn't rock.
>I also don't particularly care for 6:00 and
> Caught in a Web. I guess imho Awake has more weaker points than I&W.
these are my other least favorites off the album. mostly because of
either the singing, or because of the lyrics (in 6:00 i don't like the
lyrics)....i do like these songs though..just the other ones are
better.>

actually i like it with 'hell'...it's more powerful...it gives the
impression that he is pissed off...which it's supposed to i think.

me on the next tapes you will make for me?
later!
i'm going home now...i'm really hungry...
today was a weird day...i spen 2 or 3 hours trying to debug a 5 line
function. i tried _everythin_ and it still returned a bogus value.
i then got pissed off and wrote one exactly the same...the same body,
except for a different name..and that one worked!
if i switch and use the original it doesn't work, but if i use the
new one, it works! it's so weird!
i wasted so much time trying to figure it out!

Well, I'm afraid I have to disagree. One of my (many) favorite things
about Dream Theater is LaBrie's voice. It's so beautiful! (Esp. in
Another Day, SDV, and Surrounded!) Just my .02 for one of the best singers
I've ever heard...
Later, all!

The thing I remember most striking about Tuck (DT fans trying to get into
jazz, take note!:) was something that Guitar Player magazine pointed out,
which I later listened for and found to be true: the man plays four
simultaneous melody lines on a single guitar at the same time. Needless
to say, he fingerpicks. And needless to say, it is a breathtaking sight
to behold...especially since he does it standing up and walking around.

Well, well. With all the recent dissing of bands going on, I'd like to
point out a band that (in the time I've been here) is never been
discussed, and that is Mindfunk. To my knowledge, they only have two
albums out, and their second one, "Dropped", is really a prog-rock
masterpiece. A bit heavier than typical DT, and no keyboards, but an
incredible bunch of songwriters. I would highly recommend this disc to
anybody who enjoys DT.
Trying to add something positive,
James

I am a recent discoverer of Saga's other work besides "On the Loose." I
never really thought they sounded like DT, but they do have a very
progressive sound.
As for Marillion's newest CD, "Brave"...I love it. I think it's great. One
long piece with ups and downs and really passionate music. Very cool to put
on headphones and turn off the lights. All I need is a US tour.
Is DT in fact recording the Covers-show?!

I have an AWAKE promo cd that I'm looking to trade, preferably for live
at The Marquee (with Surrounded).
But I'll trade it for any decent offer.

BTW: isn't it "6:00 and the siren kicks *him* from a dream"?
not that I mean to nit-pick, because I am sure that anyone
could find many errors in my posts.
Yes, I too am kinda sick of the FW thread, but I finally got some,
so I can add my two cents. I bought _Awaken the Guardian_ and _No Exit_
together. Well, i understand people saying that FW takes time, but after
one listen for each disc, I am quite sure that I will like it.
Anyways, I have learned that a DT mailing list or newsgroup is not
mainly for discussing DT songs, but rather for people who like DT to talk
about DT related things. I actually found more discussion of DT songs in
places like rec.music.christian and various alt.music.... I am not saying
that this is bad, just interesting.
Next I will whine about the survey put out by pjhollow@microcity.com
(sorry, I forgot the name). I have such a hard time convincing myself
that I need to have some sort of spread rather than all 9s and 10s.
Well OAMOT just ended and I have a lot of homework to do tomorrow
(meaning Thursday) so I need to quit and go to sleep. Ahhhh...
