I agree with Trey. Fates may be good, but they do not compare to what Rush
has done. Putting "Perfect Symmetry" up against "Movong Pictures" was a bad
    idea.

Just $0.02 from another Rush head.

I agree with pjhollow@microcity.com on rating DT songs relative
to each other. If you rank them all as 9 or 10's (relative to
all other music) as most of us probably would, we'd be just as
well off to rank them as 1's and 2's...or good and great. If we
think of '5' being the "average" DT song and rate them on a scale
of 1 to 10, the results will be more indicative of the true
"favorites" or best songs. Just IMHO, of course.

Also, forgive me if this has been discussed in the past, but
I've only been on the list since the October '94 show in
Pittsburgh (thanks, Kai!). Awake has 75 minutes of music, which
is the musical capacity of a CD...how did they do this ??? I
would think it would be easier to trim parts out of longer songs
than it would be to 'lengthen' a shorter song. I find it hard
to believe that it's just a coincidence...that the 11 songs just
happened to add up to 75 minutes. Anyone ???

One more thing...somebody mentioned checking out the cutout bins
for prog music. Good idea. I saw FW Parallels last night for
$4.99, although I had already bought it used for $6...grrrr.

Im so glad to find someone who agrees with me...ive been reading this stuff about the keys being overwhelmed on Awake and totally think that it is the opposite....I&W however does have places where the keys are covered by the guitar...sure there are places where you dont hear keys on Awake but i think it is because Kevin wasnt playing for a few measures....JP sits out once in awhile too....and certainly this stuff about Kevin not playing as much or not contributing is ridiculous....Kevin's presence is felt all thru the album in my mind...

    >I play >keys and guitar in a prog-metal band, and have co-produced an album...it >is difficult to mix so that everyone is heard.

I play keys too and you're absolutely right ...i heard a local prog band a couple weeks ago where the keyboard was inaudible most of the night and it was most likely the fault of the sound man...

    > Being a big Deep Purple fan, I certainly love to hear keys and >guitar duelling -- Kev and JP do that, Kevs Hammond B3 sound is >wonderful, becuase it takes your mind back to Jon Lord...it really is >the only keys sound that can compete with 400 watts of Mesa amp gain :) >Maybe the MiniMoog as well...

Yes....dueling keys and guitar is certainly a salient feature of dream theater's style...however, i think there are a couple digital keyboards out there that if they had the same amplification as a guitar could kick the guitar's ass as far as sound goes....i play a Korg O1/W and between the Wave Shaping feature whichs can add TONS of harmonics to a sound ranging from a little resonance to thick grunge, and the distortion and overdrive programs on the effects processors, this machine puts out HHUUUUUUGGGGGEEE sounds!! These sounds are not like most other keyboard sounds and very different from a Hammond organ...they SOUND like they belong in a metal band and they arent likely to be covered up very easy....im not sure but i remember reading in Keyboard magazine, Kevin Moore said in an interview that he used Roland keyboards at the time but was looking into a Korg O1/W ....maybe he used this on Awake ???? can anyone confirm???

Good question. I don't think any of the songs "drag" either, and yet none of the longer songs really seem cut short. It's possible they cut parts of Erotomania or Silent Man. Both of these always seem to end too fast! :) I think since they recorded the 11 songs that _are_ on Awake, plus To Live Forever and Eve, that they made the actual album inclusion decision based on what was closest to filling the CD without having us, the buyers, feel slighted.

Oh, wait, before I open a HUGE can 'o' worms. let me clarify slighted. Rush left A Passage to Bangkok, a 3:45 song, off of the 71:20 Exit... Stage Left CD. A lot of us Rush fans feel slighted because simply by compressing the "cheer space" between a song or two, we could have had the complete album on CD. I don't mean that DT was in any way trying to treat us like bean counters or anything.

I don't know... I just bought PS, and have only listened to the first 4 tracks, but from what I've heard its is VERY complex and is just as complex as anything Rush has done. The lyrics are good, actually about a subject I think about a lot, which is, in one word, mediocraty. We're living in a world of it and we are one of few people who are not. We question what people like Casey Casin have to say, we don't let trends, or as one song put it, the "latest rage" rule our musical lives. We think for ourselves, and I think that's what the CD is saying. Perfect Symmetry is what most people want to obtain, fit in the crowd. The first track says they go to work all day, come home, sleep repeat it over again, never really look at life go by, never really see big picture. That's just as deep as anything Rush has ever done. Now whether one is more accessable than the other, well that's all a matter of opinion, and in some cases accessable is bad. I think RUSH's Moving Pictures is very sonic, timeless, etc, and I would say PS is too. (Well, maybe not as sonic, but they make up for that live.)

    Greetings fellow 'Jamers:

    <start non-DT content>

first off, i found 5 Marillion CDs at a local store and was wondering which ones i shud get. i've only recently gotten into Marillion; the first 2 CDs i got were Misplaced Childhood and Brave. i REALLY like Brave; more so than MC. so, here's the CDs i found. are these resonable prices? i wud get them all, but i dont have $100 (including tax) to get all of 'em. any help wud be appreciated -- and i know i shud put this up on alt.fan.marillion but my skool refuses to subscribe to it as well as a.f.dt and a.f.fw :(

    the Thieving Magpie (double CD) - $25 Clutching at Straws - $23 Seasons End - $14 Fugazi - $14 Script for a Jester's Tear - $16

    <end non-DT content> <start DT content>

the first time i heard Voices i thought it closely resembled Guns N Roses' Coma from Use Your Illusion I: the guitar volume swells, weird temolo effects; the laid-backness of the verses; the soloing towards the end; even the subject is a bit remenisant of Coma; the background vocals/speaking that are kinda burried where James sounds like Axl; the general rise and fall of the overall mood, the build ups and let downs; some of the drums even sound like a direct steal, ie: the slow ride cymbal -- tho i KNOW Mike dint steal it :).

i cud go on but wont. now get me straight, I AM IN NO WAY SAYING THAT COMA IS BETTER THAN VOICES OR THAT GNR IS BETTER THAN DT OR THAT DT STOLE FROM GNR. i'm just saying *i* hear a similarity and was wondering if anyone else had heard this. -- a small aside: when Awake was released, i hadn't listened to GNR for at least a year and a half, if not more --

another comparison: on a lot of Awake, i think that James sounds an aweful lot like Sebastian Bach of Skid Row. this is most apparent when James sings in his raspy, deep, almost straining voice -- compared to his clean, mid range to high voice ie. Silent Man. in some parts James sounds exactly like Baz. i'm not saying i dont like/dislike it; it's just another observation and it's only my oppinion.

I don't have it, but have heard it is one of the better ones without Peter Gabriel. Who sings on this CD anyway?

    > > Genesis > Foxtrot > the last 15min. is great, the rest is mediocer

To "the rest is mediocer" part, listen to it a few more times. I felt this way with And the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, about the first 10 times I listened. And now there isn't a song on the CD that I don't like, and most I love. I also just bought this CD, and am listening to the "mediocer" part, and really like what I've heard, and if you say the last 15 minutes are great, I can't wait until I get to it! :)

    > Genesis > CompactCollection(?) from 68, and reMade. > 17 songs but no song is excellent. None of the Genesis-feeling I now have > experienced. >

I've heard this is their FIRST ever CD, and that is really sucks. It's not really Genesis. It's Genesis's record company controling them to make short commertial songs.

If I were you, I'd buy Lamb right way, and also Selling England by the Pound, both are great. (I just bought England and already love it after one listen.)

I also bought Perfect Symmetry, and from listening to the first 4 tracks, I really like it! Much like Inside Out, but better.

    > > I agree with Trey. Fates may be good, but they do not compare to what Rush > > has done. Putting "Perfect Symmetry" up against "Movong Pictures" was a bad > > idea.

For me, I would say yes, it was a bad idea, simply because it is not FW's best album. I've been a FW fan for a very long time - as far back as AtG - so this latent interest in them makes me very happy, very happy indeed! But for my money, I have to disagree with those who recommend PS as the first album someone should listen to when trying to get into FW.

(Begin my little speech about FW - hopefully contributing something meaningful to the recent dialogue)

To me, there are three different Fates Warning incarnations, much like there are three different King Crimson incarnations (although some folks will break that down further into five). The first is the early, traditional metal stuff. This goes from the beginning up through _Awaken the Guardian_. Then, there was the experimental phase which lasted only for one very heavy, very creative album - _No Exit_. With PS, they entered the third phase, the one they are currently in, the post-80's "intellectual metal" made famous by Queensryche ad infinitum.

Most folks seem to regard _Perfect Symmetry_ as the be-all-end-all of FW, the best in prog-metal, and I can see why. It is a very well thought out album. I can also see why it is intimidating to the new listener. I've had the benefit of seeing how this band has grown; most people will not, and will base their opinions of them on first hearing. Considering that, someone trying to give FW a chance should probably try _Parallels_, which, in my humble yet unpopular opinion, is not that great of an FW album, but is a bit of sugar on the sometimes bitter medicine complex music can be.

(When I say "not that great of an FW album", I mean that if anyone else, oh, say, Pantera or Bon Jovi, had released this album, I would think that God himself had come down from heaven to assist them, whereas with FW it seems a little substandard to their past work.)

After that, if feeling ambitious, try AtG. A brilliant album in every way possible.

My .019999998 (Pentium error), ^^^Yes, I stole this joke...it's brilliant!

As I mentioned, I had problems w/ my CDs, and I just got a message from Brian Cox telling me that his also skips. I got a new copy, and it is perfect... and I would assume that people here would have posted if they had a problem, so there was probably an entire bad shipment somewhere... So if you get hte CD set, make sure that tehy will take it back if you get a bad one... Also, at least on my origional set, the flaw was big enough that you could CLEARLY see it on the discs...

Funny that you say this. I let a friend of mine at work listen to I&W a few months ago, and she said that James sounded a lot like Bach too. (of course, when she said this, everone asked her "The Classical music Bach?" and she was like "Of course not! I thought I was all alone in enjoying this album. It's still one of the best, and no matter how great James is, I rue Charlie leaving the band. I always felt that he meshed perfectly with the ideas being recorded. Now, whether or not he meshed live is another matter that I cannot speak to...

There is a moment on this album that gets me in the throat every time. You know, one of those melody turns that just rings in your head all day and makes you wish to God you could sing like that? It's on TOWHTSTS, the part where he goes "...every reason I risk my life, to come back to you, is locked behind your door....outside I watched you burn..." To me, that entire stanza is what music is all about.

    James

It was originally intended as a place where people could talk about how incredible I&W is :)

But I agree--the only thing that I don't feel belongs here are non-DT-related ads (incense, green cards, etc). There are enough people subscribed here that if the topics get too off-the-track, other users will complain about it (and the discussion will go elsewhere).

As to my job here, I feel that it's primarily to keep the listserv running (and the mail flowing to all of you). Secondary responsibility is dealing with bounces (you wouldn't imagine how many of these I get during a year).

If you're out-of-line, the ytsejam police will hunt you down ;)

    Hi everyone,

    Well, here we go! :)

Mike Burstin has already posted to let you all know that he's an available dub site for his area of the country and others are ready to open up as well now, as you will see shortly. All of the dub sites have the option of either posting to YJ themselves to offer copies to you or letting me do it for them, so that's what I'm here for now. :)

Please bear in mind that LOTS of dub sites will be opening within the next week or two and we don't want to swamp these nice people who've volunteered to dub the demos for other fans, so please be courteous! :) If you contact a dub site for a copy of the demos and they tell you that they aren't accepting any more requests or that they've already fulfilled their obligation to make copies for other people, BE NICE and simply wait for another dub site near you to open, ok? :) It won't be long now until dub sites are springing up like weeds all over the world<G> and you WILL be able to get a copy, don't worry, so try to be patient and treat the dubbers with the kindness they deserve. Thank you! :)

Alrighty then! To get your very own copy of Kevin's demos -

    For West USA YJammers, contact:

    markt@getnet.com

    For East USA YJammers, contact:

    huntnkill@aol.com

And thanks to these generous people for donating their time and effort to the cause! :)

More dub sites to come, I'll keep you posted!

    Hi,

I've reconnected to the group again (for a little while, anyway ;). I really want to know whether or not DT has set any dates for a tour to the United Kingdom.

    Have they?

Also, is there any news on more single releases?

    Cheers,

    Tor.

Well, hi, and just a few words to the munich concert.

Saturday afternoon I met DT for an hour of autographs, as mentioned earlier. James LaBrie looked quite tired to me, the rest appeared to be all right. Myung really seems to be a nice person, but others as well. Myung mentioned he had played the Bass for ten years, and Portnoy told me that he didnt meet anybody from ytsejam in europe so far (no big surprise....)

Well, on the evening of this 4th february i came into the hall right after fatez kicked of. Have to say that they really did a great job! Songs were cool and allthough I have those last three fatez records and like them, it impressed me in a new way so that i even love them more now. Sound was shitty, the high tones were messed somehow. But band played well and after all - if you got something like 6 titles to play, its easy to pick out all your best songs...

In the break I was able to buy some merchandising stuff - nice t-shirts and longsleeves which seem to be pretty good quality, but the prices are really unbelievable. Its just not fair to charge 40 marks ($25) for a T-Shirt and same for a hat! So I spent some 200 marks for two shirts, a hat, a pin and so on....bought the german fanzine "Dream head" as well, seems to be worth buying it....

Well, DT came in and when sound dropped for about a second at the intro of PMU the tension was clearly visible, but it went on without any problems. Sound was a bit better then at fatez, but not what i am used to hear from DT in munich. Songlist was something like PMU, 6:00, Take the time (that one was really great and Derek did a great job in the instrumental part which was added to TTT), and then I THINK CiaW, LSOAD, Lie&Mirror, A Mind beside itself. First encore was a song i couldnt make out what it was, certainly nothing from the elder records. Maybe a coverversion something starting with "do you remember my name....". I was a bit astonished thinking that this should be the end for tonight as it was not really something to do as encore, but when (of course after everybody clapped his hands to death like i died) flashlights reapeared DT made the evening perfect with Metropolis. They played quite a while, maybe some two hours.

After all - sound was not really good. But to have a soundboard from this setlist would be the thing, because they did quite a lot of instrumentals between the songs and lenghtend the solos and new intros. A bit too much for my taste as so many instrumental parts lower my enthusiasm, but for a bootleg it would be more then i ever heared on any of the boots I knew. Though Derek got some impressing parts, I really hate to see that the keys were much to low, it was hard to make them out on CiaW for example, were they are really important. The lights were very good as well, but i think they couldnt do what they did in the US due to the small hall (a former airport which allows about 900 people i think, didnt know if it was sold out but definitly many more people than last two times (and many more metal heads who threw their hairs into my face and the face of my girl......). So the variety of the crowd was not as big, different as it was last time. James mentioned that they would be shooting today (sunday) the video for Silent Man in Munich, which has already been released here as i mentioned, but i have no idea where they could be so it would be useless to check out all the places which could possibly be ......

Well, thats it for this night, sorry my humbling english, hope you got my thoughts and i didnt forget anything....

    bye, Freak
