About Tori... I have never heard her before, and I was at the CD store
yesterday. I went over to the A's and found the CD that "Winter" was on,
the one DT played at the covers. But after I thought about it, I said to
myself, I should listen to this before I buy it. Please everyone tell me
how stupid I was so I will go back and get it. be truthful, will I like
this CD if I get it? I don't care if the music isn't heavy, and I don't
really care if it's not in weird time signatures, but I don't want this
to be an Amy Grant CD or something horrible like that. I know I SHOULD
listen to this CD before, but currently I have no idea how I'd do that,
because no one I know has a CD of hers either.

Well, since there have not been too many request from Boston alone,
I'll open up for dubbing to anyone in New England...
When replying to my, if you have tapes to trade, please send me a copy
of your list so that I can make some picks.
If you are only interested in getting a copy of the Kevin Moore demos,
my policy is for you to send me ONE Maxell XL-II 90 min tape, plus
return postage (method of your choice) and money to cover a padded
mailer.
If you are interested in obtaining anything else from my collection, I
trade at a 2:1 ratio for blanks, meaning you send me TWO Maxell XL-II
tapes, and I return one. This applies to all tapes other than the KM
demos. If you want a copy of my list, either email me for a copy, or
if you have access to the web, you can obtain it from:
http://cs.brandeis.edu/USER/UGRAD/mikeb/boots
Anyway, for anyone up in New England, please let me know if you are
interested in getting a copy of the tape... I have only had 2 or 3
replies so far... and I already have that many copies sitting here
waiting to be mailed as soon as blanks arrive... (I'm dubbing copies
just about every time I listen to the tape...)

I'm almost ready to spin my master disc for Subconscious, even though production is about three weeks away. I need an assist from any Ytsejammer who can help me: I will give you $10 off your Subconscious disc if you can send me a good quality copy of the covers gig in London, 1/31/95. Some of the material they played was slated for inclusion. Other than that, I finally have pretty much all of the source material I was wanting to use.
Everyone who reserved: thanks! Info on how to send in the order will be posted the minute I start spinning discs.

First of all, thanks to William Wright for making the point I was trying to make.
I was the guy who put 'Perfect Symmetry' in the same category as 'Moving Pictures'. I did not intend to imply that FW or Rush is better or worse than the other. My only point was that 'Perfect Symmetry' is a timeless, perfect, deep album not unlike 'Moving Pictures' or 'The Wall'. It's up to the individual to decide which timeless albums he or she prefers! Or, if you're like me, just enjoy an album for what it is worth and not compare it to other works. I understand the concern of fellow Rush heads but I was not saying that FW is "as good" as Rush - only that FW is a timeless band with integrity. I am a FW and a Rush head! I'm probably a bigger Rush head than any one on this list!! :) (let's not argue about who likes Rush more)....

I totally agree. The first thing you hear is that awesome pounding drum roll and the song never lets up. This song is IMHO one of the best songs DT has.

I also happen to love this album. While I don't like the production, I think this one has DT's best music. I also like Dominici's singing. I think LaBrie is great and he puts more emotion into singing, but he does sound more commercial and less distinctive than Dominici (I still haven't heard anyone sound like him, but I have heard others sound like LaBrie).

Hello all. This is my first time posting on a net anywhere, so please bear with me...I'm a drummer and I am absolutely blown away by Mike's drumming. Honestly, I haven't been struck by such originality since Neil Peart...yes there are many other creative drummers but i'm strictly speaking in the genre of prog rock. Lately I've been trying to play tunes off the new one and actually find them easier to play than I&W. My fav tunes to play however are Innocence Faded (Unbelievable feel and grroooove, I get completely lost in that song) and Erotomania (pretty intense that keeps me quite humble.) Mike has matured by leaps and bounds since I&W IMHO. I don;t have WDADU so I can't really comment on his stylistic changes since then but what do you all think? Any drummers out there. And Mike if you're listenin', you are truly an inspiration to those of us who belive in change.

I would be very interested in communicating (offline from the Ytsejam) with those of you who are musicians. My interest is as follows: 1) Are you in a prog band? If not are you looking for one? 2) What instrument (vocals too) do you play? 3) All original or cover material as well? Are you a writer? 4) What region of the country are you in? 5) How well does prog music go over in your area (clubs/other bands etc.) 6) Demo's/CD's available for sale/trade? 7) Any interest in ongoing networking to help each other break through to other parts of the country? 8) Anything I've left out?? To Ken Bibb: Would it be possible to set-up a separate daily digest address if there is enought interest in the above? In the meantime, please contact me directly! Thanks, Paul

Why does everyone have to put down bands for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON!!!!!!!!!! This is how all of our arguments get started. You could simply have said "This is one of Fates Warnings poorer albums." But instead you have to go and insult 2 bands. One of which you know there are a lot of fans of on this lists. By doing something like this you will probably start another PANTERA BASHING thread. So people lets stop insulting other bands. It is not neccesary!

Hello, all! I also just recently obtained my copy of the Kevin Moore demos. I am a "West U.S.A." site (specifically, I am in Sacramento, California), so I will now be accepting requests from the West coast. Please e-mail me privately (jenniebear@aol.com) for details... Unlike Mike, I don't have a set limit, but I will posting here again when I'm ready to call it quits.
For those of you already in possession of "Music Meant to Be Heard," I believe I have identified a sample and would like to know if anyone can back me up on this. On "Shallow," there's a female voice singing something that sounds like "daaaa duh daaa..." toward the beginning and the end of the song. Isn't it Bjork (ex-vocalist from The Sugarcubes) from "Crying"?

Like which songs? That'd be great to hear some stuff from the covers show, but what? (Maybe the Tori Amos song?) Or, what'd be great, but a little too large, the Yes part with Howe! That'd be totally cool. :)

I'm not really sure about him maturing from I&W - I think there are many differences, yes, but I think they are strongly similar. If you compare WDADU and I&W though, you'll notice a huge difference. Kind of like the difference between Rush's Fly by Night and Permanent Waves. Besides the actual sound, the playing complexity is smoother and more solid in the later albums. I think Awake is the same idea - as I&W is a step above WDADU in drum sound, smoothness of playing, and solidity of grooves, so is Awake above I&W. Still, I would have to say I&W has the hardest beats to play. TTT is insane, as are parts of LtL. :)

actually, on I&W i DONT think he sounds like Bach. it's only on Awake and live, when he strains -- natural voice? -- that he sounds like Bach. the reason i dont think they sound similar on I&W is bcuz the melodies, lyrics, if not the majority of the songs, were already put together when James joined. on Awake James had much more input and i believe Awake demostrates James' "real" voice, or at least the one he's most comfortable w/, or the one he thought wud fit most appropriately on that CD.

Hi, I'm going to post the Dream Theater poll once more, in case some of you didn't catch it the last time. It remains in the same format as before, so here are the details again: > - All released songs (from WDADU, I&W, Awake) will be listed, along with two sets of square brackets "[ ]" beside each one. This is where your answers go. - Each song is to be ranked from 0 (really pathetic) to 10 (godlike) under two categories: images (the musical value) and words (the lyrics). If there are songs that you haven't heard, or you don't want to answer (we can't expect everyone to have opinions on each song's lyrics), leave the space between the square brackets blank! Do not put a zero if you are not ranking that song's category!! - There are two additional questions at the bottom of the poll. These are general answer questions (requiring actual words). - Album rankings will be calculated from the song rankings. - Please fill out the poll (I suggest capturing it, then use a text editor on it later) by filling in the space between the square brackets, and answering the general questions at the bottom. If you prefer, you could just send me a list of answers. This is fine, just as long as there is an answer for each question. > NOTE: I suggest that we answer the poll relative to all Dream Theater songs. Already, I'm thinking that I'm going to get a whole bunch of responses with nothing but 9s and 10s :-). This is fine, and I'm not going to tell you how to fill this thing out, but just remember that the wider your scope of ranking is, the more accurate our poll will be! And don't worry if you ranked some of the songs quite far apart and someone else didn't, because all the values are relative to each other and it will all work out just fine in the end. > That's all there is to it! The actual poll itself will (hopefully) be the next message in the digest. I will post the poll twice (this is the repost), just to make sure everyone sees it. The polling will run for 3 weeks (until Feb. 20/95 - I hope this is long enuff), then later on in that week I should have the results ready! > Please send all responses to: pjhollow@microcity.com (preferred) or pjhollow@novice.uwaterloo.ca > **DO NOT** SEND COMPLETED POLLS TO THE YTSEJAM LIST!!!

You can put four hours on a CD if you wish, but the only format a CD player will read is ISO 9660, or in time terms, 76 minutes. A few companies have pushed the envelope at the expense of data integrity. How well those discs will endure constant use is anyone's guess... like in DAT, a CD is digital and can become corrupted, rather than to degrade like an analog would.

I kind of like to think that the reason certain songs are on an album is because it is an *album* and not a collection of songs. There are some albums that fit together, flow wonderfully, mainly conceptual albums, ie _The Wall_ and _Operation: Mindcrime_, but others like Pearl Jam's _Ten_ and The 77s _Sticks and Stones_ (sorry for the obscure reference, but I am listening to it now.) DT doesn't albums aren't really perfectly flowing, in that sense, and I don't think that _To Live Forever_ would fit _Awake_ partially because it is an "old" song, and part because it is just a different style. I also must add that I am *NOT* in anyway saying that DT has bad stuff, I LOVE every DT song that I have ever heard, even _Afterlife_, probably my least favorite.
Anyways, I'm sure that it has been discussed, but what is the deal with the cassette version, referring to the change in order and the deletion of _Scarred_. It's not like a tape can't be 75 min. If someone could either explain or point me to where I could find out I would appreciate it.
And finally, I didn't express myself well when whining about the poll. I think that it is very good to have a spread in rankings, like has been stated. I just can't seem to convince myself that I won't be kicked off the list for giving a song like _Under A Glass Moon_ a 7.
PS: to the guy that I corrected his "quote": I understand what you are saying, sometimes I think that "kicks IN from a dream" would be better. Please understand that I mean no offense by having this quote in my .signature, I just like how those two fit together. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I Am A Chicken, A Giant Chicken! That's because the list is dated Jan 5, and I've since submitted the info for RISING FORCE. The digest does not exclusively deal with Yngwie, but with neoclassical metal in general.
To get more info, email me: Igor_Sinyak@ccm.ch.intel.com
And Ken: I've mentioned the list on here before - does that make you the ignorant one? :)

Hello fellow ytsejammers,
Just some additional information about the muncih concert... As freak@cube.net (Alex Reinelt) mentioned there were some instrumentals inbetween the setlist. One of them was an outstanding version of Metallicas "Battery" right after Mirror/Lie. The first encore was Deep Purples "Perfect Strangers" which was also played even more _perfect_ as the original.... The only thing that sucked this evening was the security. The guys weren't able to get the complete audience inside before Fates Warning started their show :-( ....(no further comment)
So long - jerry :--)

For the Extreme Fans on this list:
Extreme's new album: Waiting For The Punchline
Back to the roots! That's how I would describe the style of WFTP. The self-titled debut album wasn't bad, I liked "Pornograffitti" and loved "Three Sides To Every Story". When I first heard WFTP, I was disappointed, now I start to enjoy it although I'm quite sure I won't like it more than their last two albums. Nuno is still an incredible guitarist, "Midnight Express" for example is a great acoustic guitar solo that he had also played on the "Three Sides.." tour. The single "Hip today", maybe the best song of the album, also features a cool guitar solo. New band member Mike Mangini plays drums on three of the twelve songs (actually thirteen, there's a "hidden" last track called "Waiting For The Punchline"...), right now I'm not sure if I can distinguish between his and Paul Geary's style. Gary Cherone said that they wanted to give the album the atmosphere of a live recording, and I would say they were successfull. WFTPL isn't as many-sided as "Three Sides...", it sounds more monotonous (that doesn't mean it sounds monotonous!) but anyway: There's a lot to discover on the new album!

The following statement of John Petrucci is taken from the German Metal Hammer magazine. I hope my translation is okay...
"I take three 6-string-guitars with me on tour - my "Picassos". I call them "Picassos" because of the charismatic design. Basically they are identical, but differ in their coloring. The viewer can distinguish between them by the colors of the faces at the pick-ups: I use the "green Picasso" for 95%, when 6-strings are used. The white one is the spare guitar, if a string breaks on stage or something. I use the "orange Picasso" for warming up, it's also the second spare guitar. The 7-strings are only used for Caught In A Web, The Mirror and Lie. I mainly use the black and white one, the other one is the prototype that Ibanez made for me, I played it on Awake. And the Acoustic? Of course that's for The Silent Man."
