Someone in Europe record this dammit! No one over there recorded the
covers gig, at least record this! It's easier! How about anyone else with
a satellite dish in the US? Can we get MTV Europe on the sattelite? If
so, someone try and record this please.

Yuppers, glad to see them get the ol' honorable mention here...

King's X is one rad band (notice I use that word too much?) I
luv 'em. I just don't listen to them as often as I should because
I've got DT playin' all the time. I haven't heard thier new one
(Dogman), but I have to say that Gretchen Goes... is one of their
better albums as far as I've heard. I didn't really like Faith,
Hope... because it sounded, I don't know (no flames please) kinda
like the new Saigon Kick album. Just didn't like it. (Even tho the
Lizard is a kickass album). They're a really good prog band anyway
and I'd suggest them to anyone out there.

Guess I'll have to get Dogman,
                                                                    Chuck

Hi all - I got my copy of the Kevin Moore demos, so I can start to
make copies. I'm in Boston, so I'll do copies for anyone in this
general area of the country. I'm not going to put a hard limit on the
number I'll do, but I have very limited time resources so I probably
won't be able to get out more than a three or four a week. If you want
a dub from me, please send (in a padded envelope) a blank type II tape
(60 min or longer) and a self-addressed padded return envelope with
    sufficient return postage. I'm at:

    Brent Phillips

    Keyboard - March 1995

ROAD REPORT - Derek Sherinian with Dream Theater
    by Greg Rule

When we last spoke to keyboardist Derek Sherinian, he was circling the
globe with Alice Cooper (see April 1990 issue). Since that report, he's
guested on Cooper's latest, _The Last Temptation_, he's toured and
recorded with Kiss, and now he's landed one of rock's hottest synth
    seats: Dream Theater.
To Bring you up to date, longtime Dream Theater keyboardist
Kevin Moore parted amicably with the band in early '94 to pursue solo
endeavors. Jordan Rudess sat in temporarily, but it was Sherinian who
filled the bill for the band's 1994/95 _Awake_ world tour. Although he's
a hired gun for a time being, Sherinian hopes it will evolve into a
    permanent position.

THE AUDITION. "I had one week to learn four songs: 'Pull Me Under',
'Take The Time', 'Caught In A Web', and I forget the other one. I
wasn't very familiar with the band before the audition, but once I
heard their music, I knew I had to have this gig." Sherinian flew to
New York and nailed the audition on rented gear. "The best advice I can
give to anyone going through this is to go in, put on a friendly vibe,
and keep your mouth shut. Let the playing do the talking." Apparently
the keyboardist's personality and chops clicked with the band's. "We
all went to Berklee," he says, "and we have some mutual friends, so it
was a really good vibe." Incredibly, the tour started just two weeks
later. "I had to learn two hours worth of material in two weeks -- and
this is intense shit! Every minute I was awake I was shedding these
tunes, and I played the set tape as I was falling asleep so I would
get the stuff subliminally." To make matters even more stressful,
drummer Mike Portnoy caught pneumonia, leaving the band only three
    full rehearsals before going out.

GEAR. Compared to the monster rigs of yesterday's prog rock champions,
Sherinian's setup is a piece of streamlined beauty. Onstage he uses an
Oberheim Eclipse, a Korg 01/W, and a Roland JD-800. The rest is neatly
tucked into a rack behind him (see photo). "I use the eclipse
exclusively for my piano, and a MIDI-fied Korg CX-3 layered with an
Oberheim OB-3 for my organ sound." Both are routed through a
    Dynacord DLS223 Leslie simulator.

PATCHWORK. "Kevin Moore was very helpful. He sent over a JD-880 RAM card
that he used on a lot of the stuff, which was very cool of him. For the
rest, I just tried to match the sounds as closely as possible." Onstage,
Sherinain uses one JD-880 bank per song. "I do all of the patch changes
by hand. Each time I go up and play the set, it's a routine. You know,
it's the same thing as an ice skater who works out a routine, except mine
consists of playing passages, patch changes, and whatever else I need to
do. After you do it for a few shows, you lock into a groove."

REFLECTIONS. "One of the things that's really great about this gig is
that the guys are giving me a lot of room to cut. I get a two-minute
solo spot, there's a section in 'Take The Time' where I do a jazz piano
thing, and there are solos left and right. There's a lot of stuff where
the keyboard is doubling the guitar in unison -- sixteenth-notes at 220
on the metronome. It's pretty sick. There are a lot of complex melodies
and harmonies going on, but it's still very, very heavy. If you look out
in the crowd, you'll see the kids moshing and headbanging like they
would at a Metallica show. There's something for almost everyone. This
is probably the coolest rock keyboard gig in the world right now."

(photo caption) Sherinan at soundcheck. The Oberheim Eclipse, one of
his three onstage controllers, eclipses a Roland JD-800 and a Korg 01/W.
Not pictured is a Fisher Price one octave keyboard Velcro-ed to the top
of his Apex stand. "It's the centerpiece of my rig," he chuckles. His
rack, from top to bottom: Oberheim OB-3 Drawbar Expander, OB-Mx, pair
of Matrix 1000's, and Echoplex Digital Pro, Furman PL8 power module,
Kurzweil K2000R, Digital Music MX-8, Mackie CR-1604, Alesis Quadraverb,
and Dynacord DLS223. Peeking out from the left is a Korg CX-3.

    Hi everyone,

Another dub site in the US is ready to open!

To get your very own copy of Kevin's demos -

    For East USA YJammers, contact:

    jbako01@barney.poly.edu

And give this person a warm round of applause for donating his time and
    effort to the cause! :)

To reiterate what I've said previously, please bear in mind that LOTS of dub
sites will be opening within the next week or two and we don't want to swamp
these nice people who've volunteered to dub the demos for other fans, so
please be courteous! :) If you contact a dub site for a copy of the demos
and they tell you that they aren't accepting any more requests or that
they've already fulfilled their obligation to make copies for other people,
BE NICE and simply wait for another dub site near you to open, ok? :) It
won't be long now until dub sites are springing up like weeds all over the
world<G> and you WILL be able to get a copy, don't worry, so try to be
patient and treat the dubbers with the kindness they deserve. Thank you! :)

More dub sites to come, I'll keep you posted!

Sorry if I'm a bit behind... just catching up on the my Ytsejams

    1) Fates:

(apologies for bringing it up again)

I must be a rare Fates fan. I loved Parallels the moment I first heard
it. It was my first Fates album. I then bought AtG, NE and PS as a
group, and it took me more time to get into those. I still don't like
AtG that much, mostly because of John Arch.

    2) SOundgarden

Sure, a lot of you don't like them, but I htink they are one of the best
gorups out there. Any group whose current "hit" tracks are in 7/4
(Spoonman) and 5/4 (My Wave) and has a history of writing complex music
deserves a good listen in my book. Sure, they're a "Seattle Grunge-y"
    band. But's it's PROG Grunge ;)

    3) Other stuff:

I too am waiting, drooling for the Kev demos to come out.

I bought Magellan's Impending Ascension the other day - THis album's
going to take some time to get into. WHile the music is wonderful, like
early Fates the singing and the lyrics make me cringe (Well, the harmonic
stuff is cool, the solo singing leaves much to be desired)

I ended up having to delete the last 4 digests without treading. Hope I
didn't bring up any taboo subjects :)

         ~Chris

    To all:

I have ordered the Lie cd single from a local import
cd store about 1 month ago and still have not heard
anything yet. I heard someone say they got it from
somewhere called "cd.connection"? Any one got the
    Email address for this place?

Also, a few lists ago someone mentioned they have
never bought a CD and liked every song and that most
people are the same, I don't concur! I think this would
be an interesting thing for jammers to start posting.

    1. What CD *if any* have you bought that you liked
        every song?
    2. Why do you like it?

I think this would help out people who have a hard
time trying to decide which Cd to buy from certain
bands and also gives people who have never heard
certain bands a glimmer as to why they should
consider buying a certain CD. I think that leaving
out Dream Theater would be called for because I'm
sure that there is at least three people on this list
that like everysong on one of the three albums.

    My three:
    1. Kiss - "Alive" - By far the best live recording of a
band ever put on CD. IMHO
    2. Queensryche - "Operation Mindcrime" - Words do
not describe what this album did for
                              prog metal/HR. THE quintessential <sp?>
                              concept album.
    3. Skid Row - 1st CD - Just because for someone to
put out an album this good as a DEBUT
                         deserves to be mentioned.

These are all IMHO. I'm sure someone will
    laugh, someone will disagree.
    GOOD that's what I want.

Although it was mentioned in a long list of bands, I have to heartily
recommend King Crimson. I am surprised it has not been mentioned before.
Listening to their album "Red," you can see where a lot of metal bands
got some of their influence. Just the title track alone, WOW!

Anyway, this is my first post on the DT list, and I just wanted to say
"hey." If Chris T. Williams is still around on the list, I want to
givew a quick shout out to him (Chris, your typing fingers break? :)

Also a good band to check out would be Faith No More. Although the
keyboardist is not as prominent, they still rock.

Oh, and Living Colour, they're good too!
    And ... (oops outta time!)

What good will that do? European VCR's record differently than ours
do. And from what I hear, it costs big bucks to convert the 2 formats.
As much as I'd LOVE to see it, I don't think it's gonna happen :(

    Hi all,

I have heard from a lot of people how cool the UK fanzine is. How do I
start getting copies of this. Since I live in the US is it hard to get
the right amount of money over there? Any help would be appreciated. Thanx.

    Jason

P.S. Any word from the US fan club lately? They still have my $16.

I'm pressed for time so I want to make this as quick as possible.
As a huge fan of Skid Row, I feel obligated to defend Sebastian Bach from
the slammings that he has taken on this list. I think that Bach not only
has an incredible voice, but one of the most unique ones as well. He has
an ear-popping vocal range and always puts his heart into what he's
singing, despite the fact that he doesn't write the lyrics. He doesn't
_have_ to strain in order to sing (songs like "Quicksand Jesus," "In a
Darkened Room," and their version of "Little Wing" will easily
demonstrate this). I've heard him sing off key live as well, but the same
is true of Labrie as well (that was not meant maliciously). The reason he
sounds like that on LiT was that he was probably drunk and not very
serious about it, as demonstrated by the laughter which immediately
    followed it.

You have to telnet to "cdconnection.com" and it's easy to figure out from
there. I ordered my UK Lie single from there, and am anxiously waiting
    for it to come.

    Hey ho...

Need a copy of Kevin Moore's demo? Drop me a line. I'm on the West Coast
here in L.A... at this point West of the Mississippi will get priority, I
will take requests from anywhere in the continental U.S.

Maybe after a while I may take some from around the World.

If anyone can get me a PAL recording of that show, I can have it converted to NTSC for our use.

Tape it. Tape it. Tape it. Tape it. Tape it.

Anyone who gets a perfect tape of this (i.e. hifi stereo, right from the broadcast) and can get a copy to me, is good for $10 off the Subconscious CD... formats are not a problem, as I live near a place that can convert PAL to NTSC.

Nobody bothered to tape the covers gig (FOR SHAME!!!! FOR SHAME!!! HOW CAN YOU CALL YOURSELVES FANS) so at least tape this.

    Yup. Agreed. I can't help but like King's X.

Those of you looking for a proper intro to this band: rent or buy the King's X Chronicles video. It's a worthy introduction that allows your eyes some candy while your ears gradually become familiar with six of their older tunes. Then, try to get ahold of the vids of Black Flag and Dogman, and you're off 'n running.

I always recommend getting into new bands with videos instead of albums IF POSSIBLE. The reason is that you immeditaely get a feel for the whole attitude and demeanor of the band. I believe this affects MOST bands in a positive way. The only band I can think of that videos hurt your impression of them, would be Rush.

    > I haven`t been reading my Ytsejams recently. Could somebody please let me know what this Kevin Moore tape thing is that I heard about? Is it some of his solo stuff - if so, is it anything like Space-Dye Vest or is it industrial, (I heard that his own st uff was like ministry?!)

It's industrial. Even the space-dye vest demo is pretty techo-ish.

Let that not turn you off to Kev's music though! He's not atonal and dosen't lack talent like Trent Reznor or meat beat manifesto. I can't bloody stand 99% of that sort of stuff.

A quick rundown of the songs on the Moore demos:

Song For Eric (Tori Amos) This is just awesome. Just awesome. The Tori original is acapella, so Kevin adds ALL the music. There are layers and layers of sound, and the volume swells are well placed. The music behind the "I See you in my dreams" line is awe-inspiring.

Space-Dye Vest When you hear Kev singing this, it will throw you for a loop, but I guess if we could put up with John Arch singing The Killing Hand, we can put up with _anything_. :) It's so blatantly depressing you can't quit listening to it. No guitar, and no ending piano set. Samples are mostly the same.. and stand out much more clearly.

Blanket (I Buried Me Wife and I Dance On Top of Her) This is the sort of thing I expect to see at the top of the charts and in the MTV buzz bin. It's very intense. Not my favourite from the demos, but worth a listen. Time sig gymnastics are cool here.

Hollow This one's still growing on me... a slower-tempo techno song.

Roll Away The Stone This really reminds me of Kev's work on Wait For Sleep lyrically, though the music is closer to the other experimental step-down-tempo techno songs on the demo tape. A very interesting song.

Shallow This one has a chorus with a KILLER hook... very listenable, very new and cool to hear. Kev has his voice modified so heavily that it might be James and we just wouldn't realize it. The "I Can't stand here waiting" that repeats several times is done in a really cool mode or something, not sure how this is done but it adds to the feel.

Nora (and) Even The Waves Still letting these two grow on me as well. No immediate hooks, but then again, few DT songs had hooks, and they still grew on me just as well. Nora is better musically, Even the Waves better musically. (the lyrics to Nora, though laced with emotional rhetoric, seem a bit less sincere/less determinedly passionate than those on ETW).

Sun Orange, Small COOL. This longer, less technical, more melodic piece closes off the Kev Demos section of things really really well. It's pretty drawn out and has a lot of melody changes, so there's plenty to enjoy. It reminds me just a little bit of a cross between Learning to Live and LSOAD. But with no emphasis on guitar...

Anyone else care to comment? I really wonder what others are thinking of these demos. Even without having been produced or mastered, these sound better than every techno album I've ever heard. I want to know if the songs are hitting others like they hit here.

    > I've heard a little about Elan here. Would you classify them as > prog rock or are they more in a metal vein?

Well, it sure isn't like Yes, Magellan, or Marillion! It is heavy on guitars, yet it is not heavy at all! Almost happy music in some places too, yet it is all guitar. No keys at all! So, I don't really know whether it is metal or rock, but it has guitars.

If you want HEAVY prog-rock, try some mid 70's King Crimson, I think someone once said it was Doom Metal, not because they scream about death and such, but that their music creates such dark images. And their lyrics aren't bad either (one of my favorite lines of theirs, "The wall upon which the prophets wrote is cracking at the seams, upon the instruments of death the sunlight brightly gleams.")

Suggested albums include Larks Tongues in Aspic, Starless and Bible Black, Red, and In the Court of the Crimson King (this is the lightest of these albums, but quite possibly the most interesting with instruments like flutes, saxes, etc.) Saxaphones and metal you think? Well, King Crimson has always been very different, and suprisingly, Saxes and metal work quite well together!

Although some people would argue the point on whether they really ARE metal, but I think Fripp's screeeetching guitars qualify as metal, even though they usually aren't dominant.

I would definately recommend Sanctuary/Nevermore. Into the Mirror Black is a great CD. They also have Refuge Denied which Dave Mustaine produced and I like a little better than Into the Mirror Black. The lead singer and bassist have formed Nevermore, which is schedule to have a release out on Feb 7th 95 (hey that is today!!! and I don't have it yet!!!) From a demo Nevermore sounds very promising.
