Nevermore, Levithan? What are these two bands about? I've heard Levithan
mentioned here, but never saw what kind of music it was. Please, tell us
    more.

I`ve been at the DT show in Hannover last Wednesday !
Fates Warning was cool, DT was incredible !!! Great show, although
the sound was better on the last tour... Amazing musicians, including Derek !
(Okay, this sounds just like every DT review we had here, but what else can
    I say...)

The setlist: Pull me under, 6:00, Take The Time, Caught In A Web/ Drum Solo,
Lifting Shadows..., Keyboard/ Guitar Solo, The Mirror, Lie, A Mind Beside
    Itself, Perfect Strangers, Metropolis.

No chance to meet the band after the show! :(
Maybe in Berlin, maybe before the show...

Watch out for recordings of PMU and 6:00 on VIVA`s "Metalla" (German Music
    Television!).

I`ve seen parts of MTV`s DT special last night (no question that I
recorded it): Very short live performances :( , like two or three minutes
"highlights" of the covers gig including "Damage Inc." (Metallica) with
Barney from Napalm Death, "Winter" (Tori Amos), "Happiness Is A Warm Gun"
(Beatles), Yes Medley. I WANNA HEAR MORE Of THIS !
Later I can tell you more about it (or probably someone else will do).

       Sigh...
I'll probably never get to see the video here in the U.S.
since the only Video network I've got is MTV. I'm not about to
expose myself to 20 hours of rap and poorly planned game shows (but
Beavis & Butthead would be nice!) for a DT video. I fear my taste in
music would be corrupted by the time I saw it. Maybe it'll be
featured as a B&B video someday (I'll just block out the shit they
    say about it)...

And if DT ever toured with the Halens, I'd be first in line to
see that one! I love VH! Their new album rox!

    >What the hell?

Well, I think if you understand the whole genre of progressive rock and
where some of the reviewers are coming from, groups like DT and Rush are
very mainstream oriented compared to other groups. Many of the reviewers
for the GEPR are very experimental/avant-garde oriented, and like music
that is really complex and challenging to listen to. It isn't hard to find
a prog group that makes DT sound like a pop group. I think it's healthy
that all the reviewers don't all love Dream Theater, it just shows that
there is even better music out there!

While I did write one of the more positive reviews, I do believe Dream Theater
could be a lot more innovative and daring with their music skills. Of
course you have to make a living and it's nice to make prog music accessible
to a lot of people, but I honestly think the more successful DT tries to be
the more their music will suffer. The unfortunate fact is, innovative, profound
    rock music just doesn't sell.

Anyways, I'm starting to preach now, but I will say the GEPR is one of the
best resources in the world for discovering great music!

Hey all, My band was passing some time in a mall in Cleveland before a our gig, and I found FW Spectre Within for $1.00. Actually it was buy one tape for a dollar and get one free. I couldn't believe it. And actually, my drummer found it, but I had ripped it out of his hands and paid for it before he knew what happened. On a different note, I picked up the new L.A. Guns album and it kicks ass. I've read 4 reviews on it so far that say it's their best album, and I concur. (Well, tied for best. I'm not sure Cocked and Loaded can be beat.) Just a quick note, cuz I'm not sure there are too many LA Guns fans on this list. I also got the new Extreme, but I'm not impressed yet. With LA Guns and FW tapes in my player, I'm not sure I'll even get back around to Extreme's.

    Sorry for no DT content.

Leviathan is a new band from Colorado which was reviewed in the latest Guitar magazine (the one with Eddie on the front) which they likened to having influences from DT, FW, and Rush... Still trying to find it out here in CA...

Nevermore was formerly known as Sanctuary... should be released tommorow.

Here is another dub site. I will do anything on the east coast of the US. Here is the way that I decided to do it. Some people won't like it and I'm sure there are many who will like it. Instead of sending a padded envelope and shipping and a tape and all of that stuff. I'm just going to ask that you send me $5. This will cover the cost of a Maxell Xl II, a padded envelope, 1st class shipping and photocopiing of the case liner and lyric sheets. This will be alot easier for both parties. Better than worring about ok this guy forgot to send an envelope and this guy didn't send enough shipping etc....

So if anyone is interested in this deal, please let me know.

    Thanks!

Yes, I agree. An album full of songs like Metropolis and Learning to Live would be more along the lines of TRUE prog. Most true prog bands don't get into that chorus stuff. Although some did (like early 80's Crimson) but still it was more prog than DT is. DT is losely based Prog-Metal. More proggy would be Fates Warning. Still, Metropolis and Learning to Live are two of my favorite prog songs! They can write good prog, they just don't always. If you think Metropolis has a weird instrumental break in the middle of it, check out some early 70's Crimson, it is about the strangest music you will ever hear, and it totally kicks ass too. :) Keep in mind that King Crimson, in some cases, is HEAVIER than DT! They're not really metal, they're just heavy.

In fact, I'm listening to Emerson, Lake, and Palmers _Emerson, Lake, and Palmer_ right now and it just totally kicks ass too! EVERYONE needs to go out and buy this album, it is 45 minutes of totaly weirdness. Really great stuff. They are one of the only albums who have drum solos on their studio albums, and if you think Portnoy is fast, listen to Carl Palmer... whew. :)

    > rock music just doesn't sell.

Well... it did in the early 70's. :)

    > Anyways, I'm starting to preach now, but I will say the GEPR is one of the > best resources in the world for discovering great music!

Yes! I just read this message in the fidonet prog message base, let me post it. For those of you who would like to explore some TRUE prog. (Bascailly, everyone who's favorite Dream Theater song is Metropolis should read this.)

    Hey!

Here's a list of my favorite Dream Theater "moments":

-When Kev would play the ending sax solo to Another Day live...every night he just *nails* it, note-for-note...Derek just doesn't feel it. -The funky part in Take the Time -The lyrics "...love is an act of blood and I'm bleeding a pool in the shape of a heart..." -When John "spanks" the whammy bar in the solo to Under a Glass Moon -The first keyboard solo to Only a Matter of Time -Segue from The Mirror to Lie -In A Change of Seasons...the little neo-classical metal bit toward the end -"Watch the sparrow falling..." -In Pull Me Under...the part where James is singing "This world is spinning around me..." when Mike is doing the blast beats behind it -Guitar solo to Another Day -Guitar solo in Learning to Live immedeately after james does the "Woah-oh- oh"'s -Every time James opens his mouth -So much other shit that I can't begin to remember!

I have been known to make really poor analogies when I compare people to other people, but what can you jammers say about this one:

Upon meeting Derek Sherinian after the concert in October I thought he looked like Ralph Fiennes (the actor who played in "Schindler's List" and "Quiz Show") Did I make a good analogy for once, or is this one just as bad as my others.

HMMMM.....

i might have to rethink getting some VH tix. pantera and type o negative are playing here, and that is gonna break me (i already bought 3 taper tix for page/plant)

    Greetings, Jammers of all jenders!

Recently i have been very pleased to see the abundance of positive vibes on one of my favorite bands: QUEEN. Now I know they're not progressive, but I have no trouble understanding how fans of Dream Theater can relate to Queen. Any- one who has heard one of the all instrumental shows is aware that in their medley of cover tunes, they play a portion of Bohemian Rhapsody-you can bet they didn't need _Wayne's World_ to tell them that that was a great song. As far as "Fun Music" goes, I think they're one of the best, along with Extreme. <Yes, Extreme> A Night At The Opera is a classic, and the '86 live album has a great set, even though it shows how Freddy's illness took its toll on his one of a kind voice. I don't yet have Queen II<$$$$>, but it's the next Queen CD I'll get. To all the fans who swear by old Queen, I highly recommend Innuendo: I believe it is some of their best work, and possibly provides the music that most 'jammers will be able to relate to.

    Sorry about the nonDT content!

    Steve Z

PS-Anyone looked in _Wayne's_World_ for Derek Sherinian yet? I keep meaning to whenever I go home, but haven't gotten around to it.

    1. Rush - Permanent Waves 2. Dream Theater - Images and Words 3. Genesis - A Trick of the Tail 4. Peter Gabriel - So 5. Rush - Presto 6. Rush - Hemispheres 7. Genesis - THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY 8. Peter Gabriel - Us 9. Sting - Dream of the Blue Turtles 10. Queensryche - OPERATION: MINDCRIME

That would indeed be my top ten favorite albums, I think. Anybody else feel the same?!?! I could put a few others, but lets not dwell on it...Brian

Jonathan Larkowski <larkows3@nes.nersc.gov> asked, IRT the lyrics for the Kevin Moore demos "Normal Words" & "Sun Orange, Small" (hi, Lark! :) :

    >>>Does anyone have the lyrics for these figured out? They're the only two not printed on the lyrics sheet, and they're probably the hardest to figure out.<<<

I think at this point I should probably explain to everyone why the lyrics for those two songs aren't included on the lyric sheets I sent out (thanks for all the compliments on those, BTW :) because I'm sure a lot of YJammers are going to get copies of them in the future and wonder the same thing.

Kev usually types out the lyrics for all of the songs he sends, but he hasn't sent the lyrics for "Normal Words" & "Sun Orange, Small" to me yet. I did not think it wise to include on the lyric sheet _my_ versions of what I *thought* the lyrics of those two songs said because I was afraid that when I finally did get the _real_ lyrics from him, I'd find out that mine were all completely _wrong_. ;) Basically, I didn't want to look like an idiot<G>, so I just didn't include them. :) If anyone wants to take a stab at them, be my guest! I still haven't even come close to figuring out some of the lyrics for those two, so any help is appreciated! ;)

No! Remember, the like heavy stuff! (Well.... I guess they wouldn't like the Silent Man.) But if it was Pull me Under they'd say, "Yeah, that guy with the flaming heart kicks ass." "Uhh... yeah, he has, uh, heartburn." "Yeah, yeah, fire! FIRE!"

Of course, now that MTV specilizes in RAP B AND B will be replaced by DRE AND SNOOP no doubt. :(

They are one of the only albums who >have drum solos on their studio albums, and if you think Portnoy is >fast, listen to >Carl Palmer... whew. :)

Carl Palmer? Isn't he the drummer for Asia? I'm not sure but he really kicks ass. I think I forgot to mention "Asia" as one of the albums I can listen to over and over again. What's more, if you look past the "80's" classification for these guys, with songs like "Heat of the Moment," they have some pretty progressive stuff. I think Wildest Dreams has one of the most kick ass drum solos in it, and Without You is probably my favorite song off of the whole album. I picked this tape out of my old junk drawer four months ago, and I was surprised at the talent these guys have. They just re-released an old Asia album called "Aqua", too. Is this as good as Asia? Because after they made Asia it seems that they lost their prog touch and started writing stuff people wanted to hear (i.e. Don't Cry, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes). Even though they are great songs, I don't get into them as much as on their first album. (Isn't that their first album?)
