I'm pretty upset about the guy who wanted to sell copies of his LiT
    video.

What's this guy doing? He obviously want's to make some very easy money,
but hey better think twice, we don't really wan't to rip money off the
band. This is not at all the same case as with bootlegs. Bootlegs are
already illegal and if you sell one of those it's pretty bad but it's the
boot-makers that you rip money off, not the band. And even to sell
copies of boots seem pretty horrid to me, I would be glad to copy boots
to people if they provide me with everything that I need but I would
never charge anything for the work. (Work: to put in disc+tape and press
two buttons and maybe do a fade here and there, ouch that's lots of work,
I need like three blank tapes + $5 for that :-/ ) And to sell copies is
totally stupid idea and that for the same price as the original: $15.

    Better apologize dude!

(My brother on the other hand has got one too many LiT that he wants to
get rid off (original of course), sell or trade with something good. It's an
american version and he's got no use for it, he won it in a guitar-mag
contest. So if anyone's interested and would like to make an offer please
respond via email and I'll talk to my brother and see what he says.

    /Mats

Could someone be kind enough to tell me how to create a signature? My system
is ran by UNIX and judging by the cheap mail program I would say it is the earliest version. I am sorry to post this here but I really don't have anyone else to ask. None of my friends knows.

This has got to be one of the most moronic things I've ever heard. I
can think of lots of GREAT reasons not to buy a copy:

    1) It is HIGHLY illegal and a great way to end up in jail.
    2) The retail price of the video is only $15, so why in the hell would
anyone buy a bootleg for the same price???
    3) The band wouldn't bee too happy to know that the list was
being used to make money by selling bootlet copies of their
       official releases.
    4) It doesn't even make much sense to trade for the LiT video because of the
price of a high quality tape and shipping!

    Later,

i agree. the feeling one gets from this list is one of openness; anyone
can ask anything or say anything w/o being flamed pages upon pages of
useless talk saying "your wasting space w/ questions and/or comments like
    that (ironic, isn't it?)."

friendlier ones :) /me high five's all 'Jammers.

    Hi, there!

This is just a short review of the DT concert in Offenbach, Germany
(February 10th). Nothing really new, but after Stacie's question I
thought I should post it anyway.

It all started with 45 minutes of Fates Warning - they played stuff
from the latest three albums. The songs - as most of you know - were
really good. I just thought the mix to be a little inappropriate.
And 45 minutes only - wayyyyy too short.

But anyway, after a little break, DREAM THEATER began with
PULL ME UNDER. This is a really cool song to start with! Perfect!
    What can I say more!
Then James told us the Offenbach show was SOLD OUT.
He really seemed to appreciate it. :)
After doing the first song of IMAGES AND WORDS, they did the first
song off AWAKE - 6:00. Pretty close to the album version, I thought.
After this they got back to IMAGES AND WORDS - TAKE THE TIME was the
next tune. They had some sort of problem at the beginning of it (at
least it looked and sounded so), but they managed it very well.
Mike did a cool drum solo - began like the one from YTSEJAM (in the
"Live in Tokyo" video), but became different later. Great! Liked it!
CAUGHT IN A WEB was next. Here they had key and guitar solos.
It was followed by LIFTING SHADOWS OFF A DREAM.
After LSOAD they played some intrumental stuff - sounded like YTSEJAM
with some more Petrucci solo work. This went on an mingled in with
a new intro into THE MIRROR. This was the part of the show that
really blew me away - and showed me how good Derek fits in!
What do you YTSEJAMmers think? I think he should become a permanent
member of the band - no "replacement" for Kevin, but a keyborder of
his own right and with his own style.
THE MIRROR really rocked and went over into ... LIE, what else?
By the way, this has been the first time that I really liked LIE.
On the album it doesn't give me all too much.
Then came the trilogy - EROTOMANIA, VOICES and THE SILENT MAN.
    Another display of perfect musicianship.
After this they went off stage - and did something really unexpected
as first encore : they covered PERFECT STRANGERS, a song from DEEP
PURPLE. There you are. My opinion : MUCH better that the original!!!
I hope they'll record this someday, because what they made of it
sounded really DREAM-THEATER-like. In this song Derek's performance
    was outstanding.
Did I write FIRST encore? Oh, yes, 'cause the gave a second encore :
METROPOLIS, PART I, with a new cool intro.
And after they went off stage for the third time, the lights went on
and they played EVE (the studio version!) as people went out. I'm
sure many of them didn't even recognize it.

Long story, but I hope you didn't get tired of it!

With many, many greetings from Germany!

    - Andreas -

No way would I want DT to open a show....even if they did tour with
Van Halen. You'd only get less than an hour of DT. What a bummer. I'd
rather see them headline and play a little under two hours. Actually, I'd
really crave for an "Evening with Dream Theater" with no opening act and a
full 3 hour show which would include all of their songs and some covers as
    well.
I heard that Page/Plant are going to let tapers patch into the
soundboard at shows.....if only every band would be so kind.
I thought Van Halen was opening for Bon Jovi in Europe. So they're
going to co-headline in the states instead of open? Kind of like that Guns
    'N' Roses/Metallica tour. I saw them in '93 and they did "Unchained"....it
    fuckin' ruled.

Typically, you create a file called ".signature" in your home directory. If you're using a csh style shell, you can:

    vi ~/.signature

to create it. Whether this gets automatically included depends on the program used.

There's a FAQ file which talks about sigs which you can retrieve from the ytsejam email site by sending

    get ytsejam signature_finger.faq

to ytsejam-request@arastar.com with a subject of "asdf". It's also available via WWW from:

    http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/hypertext/faq/usenet/signature_finger_faq/faq.html

    and from anonymous ftp:

Yeah dude, stay away from this. Not only is it wrong, but the price you're charging for a dubbed copy is completely out of hand. If you're looking to make a ton of cash off your listmates, go join a different list. The retail value of Live in Tokyo is only around $20 new, so charging $15 for a dub of it onto a $3 videocassette is robbery. So knock this shit off.

Levithan is a band from Colorado (my state)... I too read the article in GFTPM comparing them to FW/DT...

    Not quite...

Their two guitarists are pretty good, but their singer is plain bad. And their songs don't have the structure that Dream Theater or Fates Warning have. It's like everone is just playing something cool, they play it together, and call it a song.

Their self-titled EP is better than their first album... But I didn't like either very much when I bought 'em.

Hi all, I just talked via e-mail to a person in Japan who says that they have put out over there *3* transcription books for WDADU, I&W, and Awake. These include guitar and bass (in tab), keys, and drums. What gives?! They don't put out anything like that here. Anyone heard about these books? Anyone got any of these here in the U.S.? If they won't *ever* release things like that over here, maybe we musicians can find some way to get ahold of these.

The offer seems to have been made with good intentions. Maybe he thougth LiT just wasn't available to everyone. We corrected him; there is no need for insults.

    Hi,

I've never posted before, so I'm doing it after observing for a week. I hope this works. Anyway, since I don't really have anything to say about DT right now, I'll post my list of albums with no bad songs on them. Enjoy!

Dream Theater - I&W, Awake, WDADU Rush - Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, 2112 Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime, Empire Extreme - III Sides to every story Nine Inch Nails - Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, Broken Slint - Spiderland Soul Coughing - Ruby Vroom Metallica - Master of Puppets, And Justice for All Portishead - Dummy Megadeth - Rust in Peace I Mother Earth - Dig Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique Pearl Jam - Ten

Sorry about no DT content. I'm also sorry if you don't like this stuff, but I do! If you have any questions about these records, just ask!

    Jeff (that new guy)

Glad to see someone out there agrees with my that Mechanical Resonance is a great album, definitely Tesla's best album and definitely underrated. I continued to buy their albums (except the newest one) and none of them can compare to Mechanical Resonance.

About this VH and Bon Jovi thing. . . it's impossible!! at least from the tour dates mentioned, VH are playing mediocre arenas WITH an opening act, which is to be announced (God, I hope it's DT). They are playing here (Dayton, Ohio) on FRi. April 21, at the Nutter Center, which is by NO MEANS a stadium. So, maybe they will do a stadium co-headliner during the summer, but as of spring they are playing arenas.

They are not a CHRISTIAN band, but they Are Christian. (Check out a huge review in Rolling Stones about 4 years back.-I may post some of it here if I have the time.)

    >with annoying singing, and guitar that sounds the same. Which songs are ^ hmmm???---| Well, I don't think so. They have a good harmony and are very tight in their singing. It's a radical and refreshing departure from a lot of the singing that's happening today.

    >the most progressive? They all seem to sound the same...

They ARE different from DT or FW, for sure, but that doesn't mean that they aren't progressive. I don't really like to classify music too much, but I think they are a mix between Metallica, Beatles, some Alice in Chains. I dunno. They are progressive in how their music has a lot of musical progression (theory wise). They lay a lot of layered material in their music; it seems to surround you and at times pick you up. I can't ever say that the songs sound all the same. King's X needs time, just as DT and FW does. Let it grow on you...

    >> album. Faith Hope Love is their most experimental album, as their >> producer put a slight flange on all the way through I think. However,

    >Really, I thought it sounded the most mainstreamish etc. NO!!!! Mainstream?? As compared to what? They have one of the most original sounds.

Anyways, IMHO, I think they are one of the better bands right now. I have all their stuff except Silent Planet. (Notice that a lot of their stuff is heavily influenced by C.S. Lewis????)

Anyways, I hope you listen to it a bit more. I can't say that everyone will like it, but if you like it, you'll really like it; I did!!

I have to agree. Not only is it ilegal, but it's also stupid. You can buy the thing for maybe a dollar more at Camelot, and it'll be first generation (so you won't get a grainy copy), plus the money goes to support the band. Besides, if you added the price of shipping for the above, you'd probably end up paying more...

Folks, it isn't like this video is out of print...

A.M.P. is getting a bit pathetic as far as reviews on Dream Theater go. You might want to check out alt.rock-n-roll.metal.progressive if you haven't already and can get it at your site.

I like the other discussion here as well. It finally moved me to check out Marillion... found out I liked it :) "Brave" doesn't seem to be too progressive that I can tell (might be mixed well enough to hide it) but the music recalls old-style Pink Floyd...

Ours weren't named after music bands, but they have been fanciful. Originally there was a room of 64 machines named after the crayola colors... some of them are still around. There are also the 3(4) stooges (Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp) and the Doctor Who companions. The servers are named after Greek/Roman deities, and the Vax server is appropriately named after a terrible monster ;)

I hope nobody is going to buy bootlegged copies of an official DT release!!! It's wrong (not to mention illegal) to buy things like this when they are still available in stores (I bought mine at Tower about a month ago). If something is out of print then MAYBE it would be all right to sell copies. Most people wouldn't be averse to making a copy for a friend, but if all you're doing is trying to save ten bucks that would be going to our favorite band, then you're a pretty sorry fan. Bootlegs of unreleased material are put up with by bands because the people who buy them normally already have everything the band has officially released and it doesn't take anything out of the band's pocket!

If anyone out there is desperate enough to think about buying a copy of this video from Kevin then just send me a blank tape and I'll do it for nothing!!!

To Kevin: It's people like you that make bands leery of fans who like bootlegs and who try to tape shows. I think it's really shitty of you to try and capitalize off of DT.

Sorry about the length and the flamage but I really feel strongly about this.

I can dub for you, or for anyone in Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, etc. I have about ten copies already ready-to-go still (I've had a few dub requests and I "promised myself" I'd send 20) so just send me the 5 bucks and one's on its way to ya! ($3 cassette... Maxell XLIIS90, $1.25 postage, $.75 mailer, xerox lyrics, etc. misc) This goes for anyone in any of the above areas. I do have a first gen copy off Jenn's DAT.

Send to: Mike Bahr 3383 W. Monterey St. Chandler, AZ 85226

UPDATE on Subconscious discs: Don't send any orders to the above address.. it's my parents' place, so I'm using it for Moore demos and my bills and that's IT! I am just now moving and I've messed with the CD recorder some more, so things are looking sharp for the CD production.

In about 8 or 9 days I'll post a complete track listing and a call for orders. Thanks everyone for your interest! I will be posting the names of those of you with reservations.. because nobody else gets any! (You've reserved all 500 of the initial pressing). That alone should tell you what an incredible bunch of fans you are.
