Interesting... I would never have guessed that Messiah was a DT fan!!!
On the other hand, Leif Edling likes them, judging from the special he

I think it's the other way around. As I understand it most of the
(creative) members of Memento Mori is so busy with other projects,
that they don't have time for this band. A pity because they really
had some great CD's out. Actually I think peoble on this list would
like it too, it has some progressive elements. Titles? Well, here they
    are:

    Rhymes of Lunacy
Life, death and other morbid tales (this is the most progressive of
                                        the two)

First off, these prices are not that great... I can get all of the
boots there for <$23 a piece, and LatM for <$20.00

    >
    > #1. Dream Out Loud (New York 1993) $27.97

DoE is from an FM broadcast, so quality is good, but there is some
static. Set list is good, and includes Status Seeker. LTL is cut in
    the middle

    > #2. Home Sweet Home (Live NY '92) $27.97
    > #3. Live In Long Island 1992 - II $27.97

The above 2 are both from the same show. HSH is MUCH better than
LiLI, still is not the greatest. It does have Moon Bubbles/Another
Day/Another Hand/Killing Hand. Show labels PMU as Status Seeker.
Forget about LiLI... sound is terrible.

    > #4. LIVE MARQUEE (JPN) $27.97

This is their legit live CD, so you know it is good.

    > #5. Lord of Sound (2-CD set) $55.97
    >

LoS is another FM show. (Put out by KTS, as is DoL) Sound is good.
Includes entire show, however, part of either TTT or LTL is cut for
    some reason...

At least the beginning few are from James Joyce's "Portrait Of The

    likes Joyce?)

    Re: Machine Names

The machines in my co-sci dept have some interesting names... Our
file server from last year is named berry, and the workstations that
we had (and still have) are named after berries such as rasp, straw,
huckle, blue, etc. This year, we got a grant from SGI for some
machines, including an Onyx (which is named Onyx here) and the SGI
workstations that we have are all named after various stones such as
opal, pearl, etc. We also have older machines named after various
nuts and after planets. If I could get a permanant IP for my computer
in my room, I'd probably make it either Metropolis or possibly
    Erotomania...

    Re: Modern Music Scene

I would have to agree that I am sickened by todays music scene...
Fortunatly, most of my friends, although they listen to different
music than I do, do still have some musical integrity...
Unfortunatly, I do still know alot of followers... People who can
quote Beavis & Butthead at length, and who listen to all of the
"cool" music like Green Day, Offspring, etc... While I can tolerate
some of their music, over and over again, I think to myself, how the
hell can they sell this shit thinking how they keep on repeating the
same beat OVER and OVER and OVER again... It is just sickening to me
that bands like this are selling more CDs than DT, QR, FW, and Rush...

As far as radio around here, I try not to listen to it too much...
There is one decent station around here, but it comes in poorly in my
room... (these dorms SUCK for radio and cordless phones) I do think
that even they are starting to go downhill... I think that they were
much better last year and freshman year...

I do consider myself sorta lucky w/ people at my school though...
There are at least alot of people that don't just listen to the
garbage that eMpTyV is trying to force on us... I know that if I were
at a bigger school, I'd probably have more people listening to that
stuff... (thats one advantage to going to a small school...:)

Anyway, I have rambled on enough for now...

I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Mark Tedhams <markt@getnet.com> for the quick dubbing of Kevin's demos - exactly one week turnaround for anything when the USPS is involved is great in my book. Also many thanks to Jen for helping make this possible. Now I need to get a new deck - the age of mine is starting to show.

Simply put, tape piracy is killing the music industry.

Tape piracy may be killing the industry, but I believe what was suggested above actually _helps_ the industry and bands. Note the original quote's inclusion of the phrase "and decide".

Here's the situation as I practice it, and as I feel most Ytsejammers do (this is what got me into DT in the first place):

A friend says, "check this band out, this album is great stuff." Since I am unwilling to drop the $ on this possibly erroneous recommendation (cf. the threads on "sheep" and "top40 radio mind control" :^), I reply, "tape me a copy and I'll see what I think."

The tape is inherently inferior to a CD copy - sound quality, liner notes, playable lifetime. If I end up feeling it's not worth investing in a CD copy, it gets taped over. If I do like it, I end up buying the CD. Not only that, but I try to see them live if I can, _and_ I recommend the band to other friends, at least one or two of which usually end up purchasing a "legal" copy as well - big return on initial investment (which you are considering to be an absolute loss) for that one little temporary copy.

This technique is particularly suited to people who have friends in other parts of the country, and therefore different musical trends. Also good for people living in small towns who have to drive 15mi+ to pay US$16 at some Musicland (which won't let you listen to it first), _if_ they have even heard of this band. I _dare_ you to try to find DT in my small hometown in Minnesota!

I am definitely not advocating tape piracy - the sale of unauthorized copies attempting to take the place of authorized copies. I am hypothesizing that without this activity, very few bands outside Top 40 would get the support they are now.

All right, time to break now so others can rebut.

One place I know of to get DT transcriptions (many of you may already know this) is the Nevada guitar archive. I don't know its FTP address, but its mirrored at mirrors.aol.com in the directory NEVADA/guitar/. There are several DT trascriptions including PMU, Surrounded, Another Day, Metropolis, Erotomania. I haven't checked it out, but I would assume there's plenty of 'scripts for all the Rush and Queensryche fans that hang around here as well.

In appendix to my last post concerning transcriptions, I've gotta say that many of the transcriptions I have found over the 'Net sort of suck. Most are incomplete, but I do have awesome trans. of Surrounded. PMU is missing the melodic solo at the end, and many others I have are just pieces. I am thinking about transcribing Caught in a Web (one of my all time favorite songs) for 7-string, instead of the detuned 6-string transc. found in Guitar School a couple months ago. Or I'll try to do it for 6-string with a high G instead of high-E string.

Following the all-good song albums, I have: Tourniquet - Stop the Bleeding, Vanishing Lessons Deliverance- Stay of Execution Believer - Extraction from Mortality, Sanity Obscure, and Dimensions These guys are awesome prog thrash with violins, etc. DT - Images & Words, Awake

I can't get into WDADU too much, it's real 80's, but its still cool. The other DT album I've got is the Live in Milan 2-disc set. Its not so bad but it sounds to me like James is making a fool of himself.

Tab is just a way to show where the notes being played are on the fretboard. Generally, the regular notation you'd be used to would have the coresponding tab directly beneath it for each line of the transcription. So, yes. You would be able to read the transcription, but since it is the guitar part, do you want to?

Hi everyone! Yes here is another parody of the one of DT's songs! I co-wrote this one with Shane Carey so enjoy!

WARNING: May contain material not suited for the devout DT groveler.

Hmmm.... I notice Lie, Caught In A Web, and Silent Man are not in there.. I have the tabs for these (one from Guitar or something like that, and two from a local music store's in-store tabbers) and would be willing to key them in and send 'em up to FTP if they aren't there already. I realize they just might be.

Hello all on the list, greetings and salutations!

On the subjects list for today: 1. Subconscious CD tentative master disc recorded 2. Need someone to take over the FAQ 3. For Sale! For Sale! Rock 'n Roll rarities 4. Future discs on the slate, currently, other than Dream Theater 5. I have the HBB tape 6. There is no number six.

    1. Subconscious CD tentative master disc recorded

I did a trial run on the CD, even though I'm still waiting for a couple of source tapes to use. Here's what I got so far. I may or may not change it depending how good the other tapes are when I get them. Unless I post about a change, this will be the TRACK LISTING of the CD.

Most everything has FINALLY been found in a low or 1st generation, and in a few cases, DAT masters.

    1. A Change of Season - live from New York, 3/4/93 2. To Live Forever - acoustic version, voc: LaBrie 3. Don't Look Past Me (To The Sun) - voc: John Hendricks 4. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight - voc: Dominici 5. O Holy Night - voc: Dominici 6. Eve - live, with samples, from New York, 3/4/93 7. Wanted Dead or Alive - voc: Rich Kern & Kevin Moore 8. The Gorilla Session Jam - John Petrucci, from FM special 9. Mission: Impossible - studio demo, instrumental 10. Metropolis - studio demo, instrumental 11. Creep With Tonality (later: Learning to Live) - demo, voc: LaBrie

I've intentionally left about 9 minutes empty, which is the anticipated time for the following, IF it's of high quality when I hear it. If not, I'll put some other older/demo material on it.

    12. Winter (cover of Tori Amos) - live from London, 1/31/95 13. Tears (cover of Rush) - live from London, 1/31/95

Those of you who haven't heard Winter, get up right now, and either buy Tori's "Little Earthquakes" album, or "Crucify" single. It's on both. It's possibly the most beautiful little piece on vinyl...

    2. Need someone to take over the FAQ

I confess... I just havent had time to truly devote to the FAQ like I used to do. It was great when I did. So I want to find someone who DOES have the time, and "officially" hand over that mantle. It may seem like a dirty job, but it also got me backstage to meet the band, so it _definitely_ has some perks. :) I'll hand over my current working copy (with a lot of newer stuff read-in in raw format, waiting for me to do some more work on it) and some source material that I am still looking to use in some manner, and you get a spot in the credits too! At the _top_! :)

Anyone who is unemployed, or not going to school, or otherwise just has a TON of time on their hands, email me at garion@indirect.com and I'll give you the FAQ. I'm keeping the discog because I started with that, and it takes less maintenance. I added the Lie and Silent Man singles, as well as all the promos, so the version I'm sending to cs.uwp.edu and nevada (netcom is always busy!) should be the new one.

    3. For Sale! For Sale! Rock 'n Roll rarities

A few more things I have for sale to raise money for the move and the huge house purchase... since my DT boot CDs flew out the door so fast I couldn't even wave goodbye. :)

. Soundgarden "Superunknown" limited edition double colour vinyl Two LP-set, transparent blue vinyl, includes two tracks not found on the Superunknown CD, as well as being rare as hell. Excellent condition... $30 . Super Street Fighter II Turbo 3DO CDROM The latest and greatest from the arcade.. for your 3DO. Easily a steal when it's still new in stores $30 . CD Import Single package #1 (price includes both discs) Queensryche: Another Rainy Night Queensryche: Empire Contains: ARN, Last Time In Paris, 2 livecrime tracks, Scarborough Fair, Prophecy studio, Empire edit, Della Brown edit, excellent condition $15 . CD Import Single package #2 (price includes all FIVE discs) Metallica: The Unforgiven Metallica: Nothing Else Matters Metallica: Live at Wembley 1992 Metallica: Wherever I May Roam Metallica: Sad But True Contains a TON of rarities, demos, and live shots. The Sad But True is the rare Denmark pressing with the free tattoo included (still there!) and acoustic NEM.$35 . Vinyl MFSL Ultradisc Styx: The Grand Illusion Actually pretty rare. LP is in excellent condition. Cover has a bit of wear but is not damaged or anything. Plus it's a fantastic prog album. $30

    4. Future discs on the slate, other than Dream Theater

Other discs I have on the old back burner if Subconscious works out, OTHER THAN Dream Theater (for which I can assure you all I will make plenty available) include:

. + Live + special edition 2-CD set will include 90 mins live from Phoenix 10/25/94 from master plus 30 mins Westwood One Radio show live, plus acoustic versions of singles . Rush: A Symptom of Life 2-CD set The awesome mindblowing show from 12/20/1981. A true soundboard featuring the usual awesome Moving Pictures tour setlist, plus The Camera Eye, Vital Signs, Prelude: Hemispheres, Armageddon: Hemispheres, an early Subdivisions, heck a ton of great stuff, let's leave it at that. . Rush: Shining Stars on Summer Nights 1-CD The soundboard show from Fresno, CA from 11/26/1976. One of the five known true soundboards (Hartford, Oakland '92, this one, Auburn Hills '90, and a Hemispheres tour board that I ain't lettin' out until Rush breaks up) and a damn good quality recording... roughly 45 minutes, plus the remaining 20 minutes of the show from audience master. . Type O-Negative: Gothic Plague 1-CD From the master tape from Tempe, AZ 5/30/94, ~75 mins! Extremely good stereo recording, and it fills a CD just so. Includes songs played at only a handful of dates on the Tragical Misery Tour 1994.

    5. I have the HBB tape

I have a 1st gen (but PAL) copy of the Headbangers Ball UK show featuring our favourite band, thanks to Andreas Schaefer (everyone give him a big round of applause, what a great guy!) and I'm gonna get it converted to NTSC at a local pro recording outlet in order to make it available in trade.

Thanks for reading this totally long, long, long article! Later all!

    - find all you need in your mind... if you take the time -
