About taping CD's for friends... and piracy...
One question:
How can you live with analog quality anyways? I usually buy the CD if
it's worth it...

If you do want to listen to them the best starting album would be "Chapter VI" on Music for Nations. They now use a lot of keyboards, so the prog element is there, but only a bit. I recommend them as well, and whatever I say is gospel(IMHO)...well...um Anyway, look out for them, BTW can anyone tell me if they`ve split up or not, I had heard rumours.

I'm not sure 100% and please somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but AFAIK here in Germany we have an organisation called "G.E.M.A." (forgot the full name), which gets a part of the money that is made by trading blank tapes or similar "recordable" stuff. I think it also gets a kind of fee from radio stations and other institutions which do public shows using recorded music. Surely there are some other sources. This money is divided among all registered artists in a way, but don't ask me how. Thus the artists (and maybe the music industry, too) won't get only hurt/killed by copying. Making copys _for private use_ is not an ille- gal act in Germany (*). Of course you're not allowed to make business with copys, like this guy tried recently here on ytsejam.
Apart from this I think copying generally raises the popularity of a band or an artist (more and faster spreading). If I've made good experiences with a copy, I'll be more inclined to buy the next album or even the album I've already a copy from (think of better quality and other advantages of a CD/LP compared to a tape, even a DAT).
(*) As long as we do not consider Computer-Software (new law).

Hello everyone, it's BABS. I know that I have only been with the list for a short while, but I am real curious to see how many of you would be interested in a Ytse convention. I know that some of you will find this ridiculous, but I think that it would be a lot of fun to get everyone together so that we can meet and see who we have been writing to. Just think we could have it centrally located perhaps in the U.S. I don't mean to exclude the ytse's from other countries - if they can suggest anything feasible just send me a line. I am asking the females on this list for feedback (since we are just better at this kind of stuff) on how we could do this. So Michelle, Jennifer (airdance), Jenny Baer (hope that I spelled your last name right), Kinga and I know that there are a few more women on the list let me know. I know some of you just think that this is another excuse for a party, but what's so wrong with that (ha ha). P.S. How much do you all wanna bet that the guy who is also on the Megadeath list is gonna flame me for this? -BABS

Your majestY,
Ever since "Awake" was released, I have been wondering, why is there no "Metropolis part 2"? I know that the new style doesn't invite for another song like Metropolis, but DT could have made a part 2 in their new style, but still sounding like Metropolis. Ayone got some ideas about this?

1) The Kevin Moore Demos are fantastic! I love them!! Thanks, Jennifer for making this opportunity available (and to all others who helped)!
2) I found the TAB book for I&W in Camelot music.
Thanks also for the responses on the tour dates. Well, that's it. Sorry 'bout the boo boo!

Last friday the radio show with DT was broadcasted. It was a live unplugged session. The first song was simply brilliant: TEARS from Rush. James did a good job on this one! The second song was the silent man. I still don't like this song as much as the rest of awake. Two other songs will be broadcasted soon (next friday ?). In an interview with John P. he told us that after the European tour DT will be touring in Canada. Later they are planning to tour as a support act in the States. DT is still looking for a group (Van Halen ?)

Feel lucky. 75% of the students in my school come to school dressed in their happy gangster costumes. 35% of them have teardrops tattooed beside their eye (I'm betting half of those are tattoos from gumball machines), and yet the other 24% come dressed in alerternative garb. Me, being of the 1% genre, I wear my Dream Theater T-shirt to school and get flamed for it. Same with my Queesryche ones, yet my Metallica ones seem to go over quite well..... Nuff Said, Chuck

I got the UK CD single for Silent Man yesterday. It has 3 tracks, the other two being Eve and the TTT demo. I'm glad they put the demo on CD. I can't even remember the last time I bought vinyl...I wasn't going to get the Lie 12 incher. (They're impossible to find in the States anyhow) The front cover is really dark and grim with a dark figure (the man) standing in the shadows. In the foreground is a window with a bullet hole in it. The inside cover has the picture from Awake of the guys in the studio. Kind of weird seeing Kevin pictured....it makes a new fan think he is still in the group. I'll sell audio copies of it for 100 bucks. Any takers?! <that was a joke...everyone chuckle and carry on> I agree with Mike's assessment of Kansas' Live at the Whiskey CD. If you want live Kansas get Two for the Show. Kansas made up for LATW by putting out an AWESOME box set last year...worth checking out. Kansas will have a new album out in a couple of months....their first studio release with their new violinist. (They have 3 original members left)

Well, Corrosion didn't headline on Megadeth's ticket, and we really weren't sure if it was Corrosion opening up, but unfortunately, they did. Maybe Jon's not worthy (and he's not, anymore) to even show up on VH's ticket, who knows? It makes sense to me, he's touring with them... Chuck

Wow! Of all of the albums I forgot! That has to be one of THE best albums produced from the Seattle area. It has everything you want to hear in a band. Chris Cornell's vocals, Jeff Ament's bass, Mike McCready and Stone Gossard, last (and not quite least) Eddie Vedder backup vocals. It's rad. (Sorry for the many posts, but since the Megadeth concert, I haven't read my mail, came back to 162 messages, all from the list). Megadeth was rad, tho. I recommend to all to go to one of their shows. I got crushed to death in the front row (the rail...), buy it was worth it. Don't go to see Corrosion of Conformity, they suck. Everyone booed them off of the stage. (Heh, heh) I made my way up front for when 'Deth came out, and headbanged with Marty Friedman, God it was great! I got to see him actually rip it up, live. It has to be one of the greatest experiences of my life. (I can't wait for DT to show up, I don't think they'll get the same reaction, tho.) Sorry for the long post (and non-DT content) Chuck

Yeah, Meanstreak plays as the house band on that show. In fact, I think I saw John P. sitting in the audience in the show I caught this past weekend.

My school has 20,000 undergraduates. I only know three people here who like Dream Theater. I'm willing to bet that these are the only three people on campus (other than myself) that like DT.

Just wanted to let those who live in small or "dead" towns know that you can order the I&W TAB book from a place called Guitar One-Stop. Music Dispatch does not have them. I guess you can order them direct from Warner Bros. Guitar One-Stop advertises in the classifieds in most guitar mags. Let me know if you need their number. Even though this book is out, I still think it would be interesting to look at the Japan transcriptions. Then you would have everthing (guitar, bass, keys, and drums) for WDADU, I&W, and Awake. Don't know though how good they are or even if we can get hold of them. ********************************************************************* * Brandon Vaughn ------ Edleader@uwf.bitnet * *********************************************************************

Charlie probably did that, and other than his singing, that's why they canned him! Hee hee hee! Lay off the helium, Charlie, wherever you are...

The thing I like most about Dream Theater is the keyboards.
Can anyone suggest any prog metal bands where the keyboards have a big impact on the music and are used throughout the songs?

Does anyone know where on can mail-order the I&W tab book? I've spent the last few hours calling every music store in this time zone and no one has it. :(
Later,

Interesting point. In the U.S., I think that blank tape manufacturers pay a fee to record companies for "lost royalties". Now does this mean that when I tape a concert that I have already paid my royalties by using a blank tape.
It seems to me that this royalty tax would give me the OK to tape things.
Although I'm sure that the record companies have some sort of clause denying me the "right" to make tapes even though they smugly collect a fee for the future probability of taping.
