        Okay. Here's the story...

I just found Fates Warning's Parallels and Perfect Symetry in the
used bin at my local store... I'm going to try again. It makes
sense to me that the reason I turned them off was because John Arch
is a shitty singer and that I may appreciate them more with Alder.
I'll give you my input on this discs in my next post. Also, I found
two Yes albums. (I've listened to these guys long ago, but can't
remember them) I'll tell you what I think of these (I'm sure I'll
like them). I also bought an album by a band called TNT. From what
I've heard, it's pretty good. I'll tell you all about it.

                                                            Gotta go,
                                                                Chuck

Hmm, I've heard good reviews for Live at the Marquee, but I just ordered
some Dream Theater CDs from Ranjit with the following prices:

    1) Dream Theater - (The) Dance Of Eternity [Italy/2CD] ........... $ 47.95
    2) Dream Theater - Dream Out Loud [Italy/CD] ..................... $ 24.95
    3) Dream Theater - Live At The Marquee [Japan/CD] ................ $ 22.95

    6) Dream Theater - When Dream And Day Unite [Germany/CD] ......... $ 17.95

which seem to be cheaper than the prices you quoted. I've dealt with
Ranjit before with good results. For more info, check in

or email to ranjit@netcom.com (Ranjit Padmanabhan).

I don't have any connections with Ranjit other than as a satisfied customer.
    Hope this info is useful.

I can understand the arguments about dubbing/copying an album, but I find
this (or a variation of) is usually how I get into new groups.

example: My first metal mix had as a first song PMU and I was hooked. The
mixes I borrowed from friends helped me get into Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam
, and other groups that wouldn't have even crossed my mind to get into.

I approve of copying for mixes 'cause it represents a compilation of music
that couldn't be found in that format anywhere. It makes it less of a
violation of the artist's rights and much more of a introduction to a
    variety of groups.

Hey, it is even how I managed to get someone into Rush, Metallica, Dream
    Theater, and others.

It's good to see others who like Tourniquet, Deliverance, Believer,
AND Dream Theater. I agree about WDADU. It seems almost too 80s.

But, it does have shining moments. Great instrumentation, especially
on "The Ytse Jam." Still one of my fav DT songs.

I know this thead is kind of old, but I was just listening to the new FW CD,
Inside Out, and it really is a fabulous disc. There are so many great tunes
on it and the songwriting is great. For all those who own it and cant listen
to it, may I suggest some personal highlights in no special order:

    1. "The Strand", my favorite song on the album, especially during the chorus
where Mark Zonder is riding on a splash cymbal (sorry, I'm a drummer and
    find him to be incredible)

    2. The chorus of "Outside Looking In", I just love it

    3. The 'trilogy' of "Face the Fear", "Inward Bound", and "Monument" (which
has the coolest intsrumental on the whole album. Litsten to these 3 songs in
a row, through a decent pair of headphones, and you will see what I mean.

This is really a great album. OK, I'm done. Sorry about the non-DT content!

    Later, happy listening

    Hi there,

An very interesting prog metal band is the English formation
THRESHOLD. They have released two albums: Woundend Land and
Psychedelicatessen. Both albums are recommendend if you like prog
metal bands with keyboards in it.

I was just now listening to Howard Stern ( a radio DJ in the US) and
the show was coming out of a commercial. The music they were playing
in the background sounded familiar so I turned it up and sure enough it
was "The Mirror"! Cool. I think someone said a few months ago that
they also heard the Mirror on the show and that Howard asked what it
was and they started to play some of the other songs too.

We could have it at Kev's place. :)

    Just kidding. <G>

I don't know how feasible this would be though, for everyone in the US who
was interested to meet in one specific place. I don't know if I'd be able to
swing that myself, but I would be interested in having a get together in the
LA area for the fans who live around here. On other mailing lists I belong
to, they do this kind of thing yearly usually, like have a party on their
favorite artist's birthday for example. Everyone in the world could
participate if we all had separate get-togethers in our own particular areas
    on the same day. :)

    That's my input, FWIW. ;)

Well see... this is one way I define prog music. You can't say that this
album is 80s, or this album is 70s, because prog stuff really doesn't fit
into either. When you think of 70s you either think of disco, or of the
famous 70's rock bands. But I have some 70s CDs that my parents ask me,
"Now, this group was popular in the 70s? What was their name back then?"
(meaning that they think the CD I am listening to is from the 90s.) They
can't tell! And really, no one can. Most of the stuff Yes did (see Close
to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, and Relayer) can't be put
into ANY category, and I am still leveled when I hear the power and
intensity that these CDs still have. They don't have a category, they are
timeless. Rush, another timeless band that doesn't sound 70s, 80s, or
90s, even though they have releases in all eras.

I wouldn't worry about the confusion. I've been on this list for like almost 2

    maybe 3 times (although I guess now it's 4). ;^)

I've had the same troubles at my school with "no body knowing about
Dream Theater." I go to a private school of about 2500 and only 2
people know about DT (myself included). I've posted about them a lot
on my school newsgroups, but "suddenly nobody cares."

As a natter of fact, the other guy who likes them is one of my best
friends and he got me hooked on them.

I guess I'll have to work on my roommate and take it from there...

Ok people, since i have only had a few handful of respondings, maybe
some of you been on holiday, especially japanese fellows!, and we got
some new members on ytsejam i just repost the thing to make sure
everybody knows and sends me a message...i will soon complete the
    package and send it of!

      Dear fellow Dream-Theater-Fans!

Most of you should know that DREAM THEATER would like to release
a studio-version of their 20-minute song, "A Change of Season"
on an EP to be recorded this spring. So far, ACOS has only been
available as the live version on the "Dance of Eternity" bootleg.

As I understand, it's a record company decision whether to allow them
to do this or not, so I would like to ask you to send me an e-mail in which
you comment on if you want to see a EP with ACOS come out, if you would buy
it, and so on! I will then print all of those e-mails out, compile them in a
folder, and send them to DT's management so that they can present a united
group of voices to the record company to prove that DT has very active and
enthusiastic fans and that we really want to see this happen!

Please do help to try to move something and send your mail to:

    freak@cube.net
and write in the subject-line: ACOS

I think it should be good as well if you signed your mail with your full
name (not only pseudonyms) and mention the country & state where you
come from. Please do participate no matter what country you come from!

Hello everyone, it's Babs. I was messing with the FTP sites and I found
a bunch of DT pictures. I need feedback from anyone who is familiar with
this because something came to my attention that really bothered me. I
found a picture of Mike P and there was a sign across his drum kit that
said "Free Mike Tyson". It really freaked me, because Mike P doesn't strike
me as the type that would condone wife/girlfriend beating. Could somebody
please explain the story behind this? I don't want my image of Mike Portnoy
to be shattered, please tell me that he just has a sick or way off sense of
    humor! -BABS

This is also the way Fates Warning spells it in their "Special

Go out and get people to listen to them! My friend has managed to
reach out to about 30 people and introduce them to DT (my self
included) and DT is gaining a small following in my hometown. All it
takes is for people to listen (even the cop who pulled me over last
night liked it, I had Take The Time in my tape deck). Advertise!

These are my reviews on those discs I bought yesterday... (I'm
telling you all because you're the reason I bought them)

    1. Fates Warning, Parallels.
Very excellent. Believe me, I was quite surprised at the
singing and talent as compared to the other one I listened to. No
more flames for FW from me.

    2. Fates Warning, Perfect Symmetry.
I don't really like this one all too well. It will take some
more listening to like it more. If it weren't for Parallels, I would
    have junked it.

    3. Yes, Union.
I fell asleep. (Meaning it was good, I can't sleep to shit)

    4. Yes, Big Generator.
Bummed from the fact the Steve Howe didn't play on it, it
didn't seem to be the same as Union. I fell asleep again...

    5. TNT, Knights of the New Thunder.
Quite good. I didn't listen to it as much. I played it at
work and got no response from my co-workers. I'll listen to it after
I finally get Parallels out of my system.

                                              Thanks for introducing me
                                              to some great new stuff,
                                                                Chuck

    Hi,
There was a great article in Musician magazine a few months back
about the bootleg industry. Talked about the history of it, and where it
is today. It was pretty informative. I'll dig the magazine out when I get
home and tell y'all which month it was. Don't ask me to transcribe it - it
    was WAY too long.
I had no idea that blank tape manufacturers paid "royalties" to
record companies. That's unbelievable. How can they charge me money for a
tape and then _assume_ how I'm gonna use it? I don't think that's legal.

All you guitar players check this out! I just pulled 30 transcripts
from this thing! There's complete tabs and chordial transcriptions,
etc. To get there FTP to mirrors.aol.com/pub/guitar. It's really
great. Pleny of Rush Transcriptions. Some QR, PF, FW, Yes, and even
plenty of Marillion tabs! It's great!

    To any musicians out there:

If you can't locate the I&W tab book, go to your favourite music store
and have them order it from Warner directly. I was told they get update
tab book lists every once in a while, so if they don't get a new list for
a few weeks, they won't know I&W tab exists. I just told them Dream
Theater Images and Words tab book by Warner and said it's Authentic
guitar tab (as someone posted, thanks again). They said they'd fax
    Warner and order it.

Some stores might have the list but would choose not to order it if they
don't think it would sell (if they're on glue).
