Well, a few enthusiatic guys gave me several questions about
the TAB books available in Japan. (Especially Brandon! :-)

I'd like to summarize the informations of the books, but I'm not
ready for your requests to send these to overseas. I'm too
busy now. Even if you send me such requests, it will be stacked
in one of my e-mail folders, sorry. (I have 939 ytsejam messages
unread in my e-mail folders :-(

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    In general,
            - those books are written by anonymous musicians in Japan
            - full band score(guitar, vocal, keyboard, bass, drums)
            - not all of the songs are included. see below list in detail.
            - guitar and bass have both notation and tab
            - those are distributed in Japan only, because of its legal
              agreement, I guess.
            - comments are written in Japanese, but not much comments
            - currency is $1=97yen or so now.

    In Awake book,
            - 7 string guitar is converted to 6. And also one octave
higher than real notes, so it is recommended in the Japanese
              comments to use pitch-shifter(or octaver).
            - 6 string bass is also converted to 4, and one octave higher,
              so also need pitch-shifter(or octaver).

    Well, there's another question.

A few digests before (can't remember the number of it...) somebody wrote that James LaBrie wore an YTSEJAM-T-SHIRT. Is there an official T-shirt for the subscribers of this list??? If yes, where can I get it?

    Hey Will! Remember these guys!

Hey Paul, my buddy Will on this list out at U of Calgary and I saw you guys at The Gasworks a few years back playing a lot of Rush and Queensryche etc...a few decent sounding originals too. Stop spelling Dream Theater wrong or we wont buy your CD! We kept waiting for another appearance, but we must have missed it.

For all of you Wayne's World fans, yes, the Gasworks does exist! It is a real bar...although I think it is hurting after renovating it from the old grungy, skanky, head bangin' biker look!

Probably because their songs are too long. =)

    > I JUST WANT TO SAY HI TO ALL DT FANS AND THAT I'M A NEW SUBSCRIBER. > LATER , PAUL BERESFORD

And I just want to say that typing in all caps is annoying. =)

    > _Awake_ is the ultimate in generic progressive metal and the kevin > moore demos truly eat it, yet these sheep praise them endlessly just > like they were "the emperor's new clothes." > Sloppyjoe69 To quote Mike Portnoy: "We never set out to be a progressive band."

(from an interview I did with him via the phone about two years ago.)

Additionally, I should add that when I was back on FidoNet's Prog/Rock SiG, I removed myself because the operator felt that Dream Theater was NOT a progressive band, just a metal band with good chops. And, besides that, they didn't come out in the '60's or '70's, so, they weren't. Silly, eh? So, I ask you: what specifically do you find "generic" about it? What, that there's time signature changes, key changes, strange chord voicings, extended jams, tempo changes?

That's just a partial definition of what "progressive rock" is. I mean, let's get serious here - there's only so many boundaries that can be broken. If you look at Zappa's truly wierd Synclavier work ("G-Spot Tornado" and the like), you have to realize the only way it COULD be realized was WITH a computer. Humans are only so capable, even Zappa's musicians - believe me, Frank didn't play with any wankers.

Something "original" in a world where everything's been done before? I mean, come on! That guy who did that song "I love you period" (Dan something or other...) was asked why his songs were so simple and similar to each other. His reply: "Well, there's only 12 notes that can be used. How many ways can you rearrange them? And chances are, if YOU think of it, someone else already has."

Besides, like I always say: If you don't like it, do better.

I think Babs has a good idea. Eventhough it may not be possible for a national get-together but why not regionals?! Long Island sounds OK for me. I live in NJ and would take the road trip. I have a friend that would go too. He was the one who got me hooked into DT. I print out everyday's Ytsejams so that he can read them and keep up on what it going on. He doesn't have a computer nor Internet access but I guess you could say that he is a member! It would be nice to put some faces to the people we email to. :D

As for the high brow butthead who called us all mindless sheep, undoubtedly, you did this to start a flame war. I am one of your pseudo-intellectuals but at least I am intelligent enough not to fall for your childish-temper-tantrum- for-attention. You probably already unsubscribed. You great mastermind you. Nothing like running into a crowded fire and yelling *Theatre!* Ha, ha, ha. In case you didn't know, that was a joke, just like your post, IMHO. Yeah, I think I can go and jump off of a bridge just because somebody who calls themself *Sloppyjoe69* says that they hate me and I should die. The Ytsejam is presented as an open forum in which people can express the thoughts and ideas that impact them. The common thread that we ALL share is that we are all fans of Dream Theater.

You, *Sloppyjoe69*, have failed the common human decency test. I don't hate you but I think that if you are that unhappy, you should think about unsubscribing.

    Regards, Johnny

The only FW album I have heard and liked so far is Parallels. I can't stand their earlier stuff. I haven't heard their latest, either, but I really love Parallels. One of the things I found interesting about the LiT video were the band's comments about how "Another Day" hadn't been accepted by MTV.

Why? Well, the third time I talked to Mike, some label person was trying to shoosh everyone out, because they had the video in the bus. Now, THAT would've been cool, but, no. =)

ANYWAY: Why I originally started saying this has escaped me, but, suffice it to say that "AWAKE"'s heaviness did not suprise me in the least. I should've really seen it coming after the video (and especially that intro of TTT winding up turning into "The Mirror").

I'll share a little label info with ya'll: They're not happy with their current sale rate. However, if they'd picked a different single, things might've turned out better.

I got a copy of the album back in the 1st week of september, '94. Nice to have friends who intern for their label, eh?

Anyway, I listened through it, and pretty much thought that "Innocence Faded," or "6:00" would be great lead off singles, followed by maybe "Caught In A Web" and "The Silent Man." Well, once again, Atlantic makes a bad call. They took what they percieved to be the 'heaviest' yet still 'commercially viable' song, and put it out.

Now, what they, in their infinite wisdom, and constant attempts to bend over for MTV, did not see was the fact that most of the people who buy DT albums are hard-core DT fans. Here they come, out with this song that, honestly, is among my least favorite on the album, and my roommate tells me, "They're ripping 'Lie' to shreds! They think it sucks!"

    Oh, those brilliant people. =)

I should go get a job at one of those labels. Look what's coming out as the next single. <grin> Ah, THAT'S why I started writing this! I knew I'd remember. =)

    >you all have failed the human litmus test. i hate you and i hope die.

Okay. This was a rather interesting post. Unfortunately, you offended me Mr. Sloppyjoe69. I understand your concern for the lacking DT material in many of our posts. We do talk about other bands when information on the focus of our list is lacking information. It just so happens that we enjoy listening to these bands as much as we enjoy listening to Dream Theater and would also like to discuss them among one another. Now, the flaming begins. First, upon my rebuttal, I have to ask... What in the FUCK are you doing on this list, then?!? If you don't like any of Dream Theater's music, don't join the Dream Theater mailing list. Use common sense. Don't call us sheep because we ALL enjoy the same thing. Fuck you. I bought Awake long before and enjoyed it also long before I joined this mailing list. I bought it despite the fact that I was one of the only people within the nearest 100 mile radius to have even listened to Dream Theater. I believe most of us can give you the same response. If this was just a post for you to piss us all off, I think you really did it. If you think Awake is shitty music, that's your problem. You have about as open a mind as I do (re: the Fates Warning post). I'm not going to say anything for that. I'm not going to flame you for telling us Dream Theater is shitty music. But if you think we should be talking about all of these DT poser bands that have not been able to make it anywhere as of yet (Maybe because they suck? I don't know), you should start the talking, not expect us to just bring them up. (an angry tirade follows, but it would just bore the rest of you and become a 20 page long post). Going off, ChucK

I figured as much. I just bought these cuz I found them in the $3.00 bin at my local music store. I still like 'em tho. Now searching for the earlier albums.... ChucK

I could not support DT opening for anyone on their next US tour. I don't care if they opened for really cool bands like Rush, Yes, King Crimson, or Pink Floyd....it would still suck. (Yes and Floyd don't have openers anyway) They Must start the next tour in April and continue on through the summer, playing outdoors a bit more when possible....headlining with a half way decent opener. (So long as it isn't I Mother Earth again) That's the way I want it to be anyway. It'd be cool if they did SNL. That'd make me watch that show again....the writers are horrible this year.

    Ok ok ok....

I've sat back and watched for ahwile now.... Yes, I am on the Megadeth list...but I am not going to flame you all for wanting to have a Ytse convention or get-together....because frankly, it's a great idea. I've been getting (or in the process of) together with many of my friends from the 'deth list....and it had worked out great. It is a great opportunity to actually meet who you are talking to. So if it works out for you guys...great. No flames headed your way from me......

Because if you wan't to be on a late night talk show as a musical guest, you're songs must be under 3 minutes, 'cuz that's all the time you're alloted :) Guess we won't be seeing them on TV anytime soon.

    A few things:

    1) Mike Portnoy is a huge boxing fan. Mike Tyson is/was basically the Mac Daddy of boxing, and since he's been put away, boxing hasn't been as exciting. Mike just wants him back for that reason. Mike isn't into the whole sexual assault thing, I'm sure!

    2) Sloppy Joe- You really have a way with big words. Congratulations! "Poppycock" is especially brilliant. One thing, though: You don't know what the fuck you're talking about! I could use a bunch of big words to describe quantum physics, but I still don't know anything about it! So educate yourself a little bit about a given topic before you go and give a lecture to the experts!!

    3) Ytsejam convention? Awesome!

    Just my $.02!

Wow... at least one other person in my school has heard of DT... and I am impressed... :) One of my friends who is an editor on the school paper asked me for the name of DT's drummer & bass player... I was wondering why... so I checked out the paper, and someone did a review of some CD (don't remember what) but whoever did the article mentioned that their musical style was sorta like DT's, but that the band was nowhere nearly as talented... So I found a 3rd person who knows of DT. (I know of someone else also... but he's an asshole (IMO))

    Wake Up!!

    Just some comments:

Ytse Con -------- I am surprised that this hasn't come up before. Thanks Babs for the idea <grin>. I think if we pull this off it should be scheduled in the summer sometime which would allow those working to take vacation and us college types would be out of school (theoretically, I have had summer classes before). Even if we can't get the band to perform it would be cool just to have as many of them as possible hanging out there. I really don't have any ideas for where it should be held I'd like it to be on the east coast if possible (because that is where I am) if it isnn't I'm taking a flight to get there most likely (though It would be cool to drive cross country to California with a trunk full of beer and all of my DT boots and albums. <grin>

Yes albums ---------- If you are getting into Yes for the first time I would get Fragile or Close to the Edge, definitely my favorite albums by the group, they are also considered to be the band's best by a large number of fans (though Topographic Oceans usually ranks high). These two albums have Jon Anderson on vocals, Steve Howe on guitar, Chris Squire on bass, Rick Wakeman on keys, and Fragile has Bruford, Close to the Edge has White on drums I believe.

Related bands ------------- Something that I just picked up, Asgard's Imago Mundi. Kinda one of those D&D war type albums in concept, the songs are titled after various lands in this realm ie Justice (Land of the Silver Drakkar) and Vulgarity (Land of the Slimes). All of the pieces strike wonderful moods based on the titles. Several of the early songs would be described as heavier prog metal and many in the middle are more prog rock. It is hard to do a song about Serenity and have grinding guitar parts. I just got to Disharmony (Land of the Chasms) and this is a pretty heavy DTish song. However I would recommend this to all fantasy role players for mood music and to those who enjoy good keyboard influxed prog metal with a good vocalist (the lead singer has an accent but you can still understand him, kinda sings like Fish in his phrasing at times but his voice isn't similar). This is on Music is Intelligence label out of Germany WMMS 028. Here is the information:
