I would really like to know how to get into DT interactive, also.
I have no clue as to where I may find it and was hoping that someone
out there would please send me the info.

    What's up, everyone?

I'm new on the list and am interested in talking DT guitar theory with
other players out there. I'm also looking for transcriptions to several
different solos, including YJ (the keyboard solo), PMU (that quick lick in
the first two solos of the song; the magazines never seem to get it right
and I can't seem to either), and the sweeps in the solo for AFIL.

Does anyone know when DT is coming back to the Mirage (Minneapolos)? I
    missed the first one...

I think a Ytse convention is a wonderful idea. I also get the
impression that the majority of Ytsejammers are college students, like
myself. In general, college students tend to not be as finacially well off
as others. I would have an extremly difficult time attending a convention
in New York. And what about those over seas Ytsejammers? I can only
imagine how expensive it would be to fly from Tokyo to New York.

That's why I think the regional Ytse convention is a good idea.
If we all get together on one specific day, maybe we could link up via
    the internet. Just a thought.

Another thing, who is going to organize this effort?

    hello ytsejammers!

on the subject of dubbing cds.... i think this is an excellent way to spread
the news so to speak about a band that is good and not popular... in high
school i listened to nothing but classical music but a friend gave me a tape
with three songs on it because we had discussed weird time signatures one day..

the songs were: 1> Jacob's Ladder
                       2> YYZ
                       3> La Villa Strangiato

i certainly got hooked real fast and soon found myself with copies of about 6
rush albums...i now own cd versions of all but 4 rush albums and all of DT
stuff which the same friend also had dubbed I&W for me... without this "illegal"act, these two wonderful bands wouldnt have sold 20 albums to me....

that prety much shows how useful it can be....

    by the way.....

heard also....mail me and i'll send you my "dubbing agreement" ;)

This is not particularly true. Last I heard, Megadeth was on David
Letterman and they played two of their songs, which are definitely in
no way 1:30 minute songs. (That would make them more like Green Day
wouldn't it?) I'm sure they could play Take the Time with absolutely
no problem. If they played on any talk show, it'd be the first time
for me to watch one for about two years.

At the college that i attend i have turned a lot of people into Dream
Theater fans. It is really easy because Dream Theater has a variety of
styles of music. Songs like Surrounded to Lie. I cant say that they are
die hard fans like me and listen to one of their cds a day, but i have
gotten people to go buy albums. I have met at least 15 people who
already liked dt before i met them. And when the cd Awake came out there
was a line of dt fans waiting for the cd. (Although this number is hard
to tell because there were other albums coming out at the same time.)
They store sold out of the cd and i saw about 20 or 30 of them with
people still asking. The popularity could also be because there actually
is air play for dt and they had cd and memorabilia give aways on the
station. Sorry for the boring note but i thought i would just comment on
the dt popularity in my area. Later.

    Hey, Jammers:

Although I can't really condone Sloppyjoe69's flamage in the last 'jam, I too
am, for the most part, unimpressed w/ Kevin Moore's demos. I don't hate them,
but I can't say that I like them either. I guess I just didn't want to be the
first to say anything bad about them. Personally, I think the compositions are
mediocre at best, and his vocals have to go. But this, of course, is just my
opinion and I certainly understand that people like them. We jammers all have
ecectic musical tates, but we're all eclectic in a different way, I'm sure.

If this is the music that Kev likes to play, I applaud his convictions in
leaving the band to pursue it, and "Moore" power to him<sorry>. I definitely
wish him all the success and happiness he deserves.

God forbid having Dream Theater as an opening band!!! That would really suck.
Especially for VH. VH is good in their own way, but that new single<Wanna Hear
    What ED Can Do?>sucks. I would MUCH rather hear Eddie play keys than guitar;
his tapping is soooo tired<I could listen to him nail the harmonics all day,
though!>My favorite VH song is Right Now, but every time I hear it now I think
of Crystal Pepsi! Dream Theater is the best, and anything less than a full
show and I would feel cheated. This DT/VH thing would NEVER HAPPEN IN A
MILLION YEARS anyway, so why worry?

One more thing; on a video bootleg of FW, in Monument, Joe DiBiase<bass> capos
up at about the 5th fret. Anyone know why?

    See ya,

    Steve Z

Mike expained on a radio broadcast before the show that he is a huge

Surprisingly, I found a copy of Magellan's "Impending Ascension" yesterday and have had a chance to listen to it twice so far.

My reaction: Wow. It is _so_ hard to find a band that is dynamic these days....The first song just drags you in with hook after hook, then settles down, and then pulls a few more punches, sort of like a classical composition would. Because of the many places that are visited in the first few moments, some listeners might call it contrived. But I would have to say, how many songs do you know of that are not contrived? There are very few that are not consciously crafted with an ear for the listener. And this song takes that idea and pushes it to the maximum, just astounding the listener. So I was impressed. And that was at first listen. So I would say that this band succeeds on the first level... Now I have to listen some more, and see if they succeed on that ever-so-important second level, the more esoteric level...

I'd like to note that I noticed a veritable plethora of influences, among them Queen and Yes (vocals), Marillion (Waterfront Wierdos esp), ELP (keys) and Rush, and probably lots of others. yummy disc.

For all of those interested in instrumental guitar stuff like Gary Hoey, Joe Satriani, &c, &c. -- Check out the Hellcasters.

I picked them up about two weeks ago -- the album "the Return of the Hellcasters," and was floored. The first half is completely unbelievable, and the second is very good. It's a trio of guitarists who have a wide range of influences. Bluegrassy feel, but *definitely* not country! Very highly recommended.

(I got their second album yesterday, and have only had a chance to listen to it once. More of the same, I think, except different. I didn't hear any skanky tracks, so things look good!)

This Ytsejam convention would be a million times better if it included a Dream Theater U.S. Covers Gig. Or even just a special gig for fans in the NY Metro area (and fans with airline tickets) who have supported them since they started.

It's been a long time since they've played Long Island.

Let the record show that The All-Mighty Music Oracle has spoken. All Hail the Petty Ego. M'self, I like Awake, not as much as Images + Words or Dream and Day Unite, but it's still good, and still quite a bit separated from "generic". But this is besides the point. The point is that A] with the exception of extremes like the Village People or Bee-Gees, taste in music is quite subjective, and B] those who try to

How exectly do you define "human"? Pompous, egotistical people who happen to agree with you? Funny, I'd have a considerably different name for them...

Well, I hate to admit it, but he's right here. Does it really matter if it's spelled "theater" or "Theatre"? And of course, the message I'm responding to is one of the pettiest things I've ever seen.

No doubt someone with vanity like yours will insist on flaming a reply with lots of exclamation points, expletitives and pseudo-Nietzche philosophy. It's probably inevitable, like one of Skinner's rats pushing the food button, but I ask that you reply to my own address instead of jamming up the list (DaggarJon@Urvax.Urich.Edu). I would have done so m'self, but I lost yours.

Wrong. It is an OPINION. Unfortunately, you are NOT God of music, so what you say isn't truth, only subjective.

so? point? maybe no one wants to talk about them. i personally have never heard either bands. i've heard OF Cynic and they din't sound interesting to me. so why would i talk about them?

    again, *YOUR* oppinion...

Those of us with a modicum of intelligence will read the above line and cheerfully ignore the rest of this person's post.

BTW, thanks to everyone who mentioned Marillion. I finally broke down and picked up 'Clutching At Straws'. I'm completely blown away.

    Nope, Bruford is on both.

Speaking of Yes, Squire is apparently working out more, becoming Mr. Energy. Now if he can channel that into his work, I'd be a happy man :)

P.S.--I too think the YtseJam convention would be really fucking cool. Alas, I am a male and have no mind for organization, so please let me know when everything is set up... ;)
