OK, this post is rather long, but on the other hand I don't post very
often so that should make up for it...

They opened with the music intro from Nothing Left To Say (I think... I don't
have the PS CD here at the moment). Next came Life In Still Water.

Yes, the Fates sound was disappointing. However, I think the performance
was excellent! I was very impressed by the nice twin guitar parts by Frank
and Jim, and Ray's singing was great as well. Some of my friends weren't
that impressed, but on the other hand they don't have any of the FW albums
(I gave them tape copies of the four latest ones two weeks ago), so that was
to be expected. I myself have them all... :-)

I agree that the April 1, 1993 show in Stockholm was a bit better (had no
chance to see the fall '93 show), but that was in a smaller club and that
closeness is hard to duplicate in a larger arena. I too think they could've
played at least one song from the WDADU album (which most journalists don't
even know exists -- they think I&W is DT's debut album...)

Yes, the rest of the band handled that professionally, but James was pretty
much pissed off. He went over to JP's mic and asked the audience if they
wanted him to stand there like a geek for the rest of the concert. And he
also said 'If it happens again, we're leaving...' and we of course started
screaming 'NOOOOO!' and he responded 'Just kidding!'

It was pretty cool that they played Damage Inc by Metallica. Like one of
my friends said, 'That's way tighter than Metallica could ever dream of
playing!' and I agree. It looks so _simple_ but we all know that's just
because they are among the best musicians ever to enter a stage.

My brother took a couple of close-up photos of JP; if they're good I might
(no promises) scan and upload them to the DT archives. Finally, greetings to
the other Swedish Ytsejam subscribers that I met before the show (you guys
    from Sandviken).

I am extremely new to this list and am curious about some things.
First of all, is AWAKE a good CD? Next, has anyone seen Dream
Theater live? If so, were they worth the money to see them?
Finally, does Dream Theater have a long form video out? If so, what
is it called? Is it worth buying or renting? I hope that I do not
appear too ignorant, but I am learning alot about DT. I think that
Dream Theater rocks. I have IMAGES AND WORDS and I love it. I am
also a fan of Steve Taylor. Does anyone else like Steve? If so,
    email me.

I saw Tori Amos on Dave once. UNREAL!! She was amazing. She has this
sort of interaction with the audience that is really powerful. To get to
my point: She was so good (the audience was going nuts!) that Dave
bumped his next guest and she did another tune! That's got to be over
three minutes. Sometimes those late night shows don't have a whole bunch
of guests and the host ends up doing a lot of B.S.ing. Why not get DT??
Even if they just mess around and improvise something for 3 min., it
    would be great!!

If anyone in the U.S. has PAL or SECAM copies of Dream Theater (or other
prog rock/melodic metal bands), I have access to a NTSC (U.S.A. standard)
convertor. Please contact me for info.

Pet Peeve Notice #1: On a different note, doesn't it seem strange that
the I&W tab book has just been released after Awake has been out for several
months? Who decides what tab books get released? The Winger and Britny Fox
books are rotting in the racks, entire alternate band tab books are shorter
than the Metropolis transcription alone, and Rush and Yes come out as
generic/quasi-piano only/no solos collections? Aside from Queen's Greatest
Hits, there's nothing in the U.S. in band score. Aside from the RHCP (Flea),
good bass songs are not put into tab (Oh boy, Dokken for BASS!? Wow, I found
a non-eighth pedal note!). How about Chronicles in "Off-The-Record" format?
How about Dixie Dregs/Steve Morse in band score? Where's "Awake" in band
    score? Where's "Awake" anywhere? (I know...Japan, Japan...bitch, bitch....)

Pet Peeve Notice #2: Please keep your line lengths to EIGHTY CHARACTERS MAX!
Heavens, this might mean hitting the return key instead of autowrapping,
but a lot of us get posts that are one line long and 2000 characters wide.
We can't read 'em if we can't see 'em!

Pet Peeve Notice #3: Send notes of support for ACOS to Freak. Even if you
haven't heard "A Change of Seasons," DO IT, or you might never get to....

Apology Notice: I haven't got more info on the prog rock band Lethal, yet.
I've been working third shift and I'm sure they don't want calls at 4 a.m.

                                    Can't-get On The Web,

                                    not Chuck, nor Chuck Ibanez,
but maybe Rick Carvin P.V. Guild

P.S. So who's meeting DT at the airport when they get back to the states?
I'm sure MTV will provide live coverage...only if Rikki Rachtman is
a baggage handler at JFK right now....

Disclaimer: No one else is my company has a clue to what Dream Theater is
(they think it's an X-rated movie cinema), therefore my opinions could never

This is my opinion on Kevin's demos.
I think that the girl he broke up with really messed him up. Love tends to
do that. So now he is mocking a lot of things he used to believe in. In his
lyrics it really seems that he is mocking religion and didn't he used to be
heavily into religion? Also the lyrics to 6:00 seem to be saying that he
wanted to leave DT because they were becoming too "commercial". So I thou-
ght that he would probably make a more jazzier album. But instead the music
he made sounds a hell of a lot more commercial than any thing DT ever did.
I am not saying that I don't like his somgs, some are really good, and the
best grunge I have ever heard (Hollow).
I just think that after she left him it totally changed his state of mind.
Compare Surrounded and Space Dye Vest. See what I mean. After she left him
he probably just thought that everything in his life was unimportant. I
know that after I stopped seeing my last girlfriend I felt tat way too.
He also seems to be really but burned out. This music is so much
simpler than the stuff he did for DT.
Please keep in mend that this is just my opinion. And I hope I didn't
make anyone mad. That wasn't my intention. And I am probably very very
    wrong.

    Trey

PS Thanks for the tip Mike it worked!! A long letter!! I am so happy I

Man, this guy is a genius if you ask me! It was the funniest thing I
read all week! I laugh my ass off everytime I read someone's reply to
Sloppyjoe69! :) Ahh, he may have been quite harsh but he mentioned two
of my favorite bands so I can't flame this guy. Seriously, Thought
Industry and Cynic are amazing bands and I would recommend them to any
    ytsejammer.

Sloppyjoe69 also discussed mediocre bands such as Bon Jovi. I am kind of
surprised that there are so many rock'n'rollers on this list. I guess
'Awake' really brought more fans to DT. (time for me to gloat)-I bought
WD&DU within the first few months of it's release, so i'm more partial to
    DT's prog material.

As far as the KM demos, I think it is obvious that these are demos and
not a final product. Kevin is clearly searching for a musical identity
on his own and I believe that he has a long way to go. I can tolerate a
few songs but most of the songs lack conviction, passion, and
timelessness (the most important ingredient, if you ask me). Ahh, well...

I really hope people on this list will check out our new demo when it

It is a big step forward! The studio fucked up the quality of the tapes
so we are having them re-done. Ahhhh! Bye...... :)

believe) called Winter Rose...kinda cheesy stuff, like Poison, Ratt,
mid-80s Motley Crue, etc... Not bad, if you like James LaBrie. But I
heard it so long ago, I don't even remember what the vocals were like. I
just remember it was kinda catchy. If you're interested, you should
    check it out.

well, if this goes as well as just trying to get people together at any
of the shows last year, we are in trouble :)

i tried to organize meeting people at the **five** shows i went to, to
    no success.

anyway, if we do this, i think it should be in the break between the
spring and summer semesters, may 15-jun 8 or so for me, but in that
general area. i would be willing to drive maybe 4 or 500 miles, but
that is it. that wouldn't even get me out of texas :)

anyway, if we have regional get togethers, i would volunteer my apartment
in lovely college station, tx. college station is pretty much equidistant
from about 5 or 6 major metropolitan areas:

    dallas (3 hours)
    houston (2 hours)
    austin (2 hours)
    san antonio (4 hours)
    oklahoma city (6 hours)
    tulsa (7 hours)
    baton rouge (6 hours)
    new orleans (8 hours)
    el paso (12 hours)
    little rock (12 hours)
    kansas city (14 hours)

this is kinda stretching it, but it is pretty accessible for most of the
southern US. i have a huge dream theater collection, too, that everyone
could come see and hopefully not steal :) anyway, i would be willing to
put up as many people here for a weekend as i can fit, it would be really
cool to do it when dt is playing in texas, and maybe we could all go hit
5 or 6 shows (i am certainly going to as many as i can, since derek told
me he would see to it to put me on guest list and VIP list for as many
shows as i wanted, man is he cool)

anyway, this probably only applies to ppl in texas, but if anyone else is
wanting to come to texas sometime, i would be glad to organize something.
maybe we could all go down to austin to see eric johnson (he plays every
two weeks) or houston to see galactic cowboys (they play about once a
month) actually, any musicians could bring their gear and we could have
quite a jam session down at my parents house in houston. i have a backyard
studio there and there is woods all around the house, so we can make
    alot of noise.

anyway, i am procrastinating studying for a test and doing two homeworks
    so i better stop babbling.

i really do think texas would be a good regional spot, though. if for no
other reason, everyone can make copies of my DATs. :)

i am thinking of flying out to the east coast to catch dt on a few of the
upcoming (hopefully) shows and meeting some east coast 'jammers, hopefully
i can find places to crash and transportation (mike burstin? james utz?) :)
so maybe i can make two of the regional meetings (of course i have no money
so i don't know where this plane ticket is gonna come from)

Paradox is off of Point of Know Return right? Acutally, a couple of songs
off of AWAKE remind me of that CD. The two songs that I'm thinking of
are Caught in a Web and Eretomania. Odly, 6:00 doesn't remind me of
that CD at all ;). Although, now that I listen to it again, I can sorta
    hear what you mean.

BTW, I never got around to posting which Albums no bad songs on them, but if
I did, Point of Know Return would be on there. (Awesome CD IMHO).

     ATTENTION!!!! ATTENTION!!!!

James LaBrie announced yesterday that Derek Sherinian is now an
     official member of Dream Theater!!!!!

Their gig in Finland was just plain great. A real good performance.
The place was sold out and to my big surprise everyone kept singing
along EVERY song through the concert. (some people even sang along
the covers..) They did a few "extra" songs (e.g. Surrounded) because
they didn't make it to Finland on the Images and Words tour. The whole
band was smiling all the time, and LaBrie hit all those high notes!
     Totally unbelievable!! :)

Right after they stopped playing their second encore Mike came and
pointed my Ytsejam shirt and smiled showing me HIS shirt.. Was I happy
to get noticed in the crowd. :)

They did some new instrumental, which was real real good. It was NOT
the same I have on the tape from the Awake US tour.. Derek had
at least 5 solo spots and James did a few real funny jokes.

Fates were really good too, but DT was so great I forgot about Fates right
     after "WAKE UP!"

Well, I was this close --> <-- to meeting the band.. Derek was the first
to come out and was real nice and didn't seem to mind all the stupid
questions ("Why didn't you play Rush covers?" aargh..) and signed stuff.
But instantly when the others came out some fat guy comes and throws
everyone away, even though the place was supposed to be open the
next 15 minutes AFTER which their "Aftershow party" for those radio
station backstage pass winners should have begun... This totally
spoiled my otherwise perfect evening. I would've wanted to say "Hi"
     to my favorite band.

    Hello,

I was just wondering, where can I get Dream Theater posters (either concert-type posters, Images and Words, or Awake)? If any of you know, please post to YTSEJAM.

    Thanks! Alex (ar4845@cutter.ship.edu)

    Just a thought.

    Hi there!

Finally we found Derek in Wayne's World! The other night Jason (jks2x@fermi.clas.virginia.edu - who's here in Europe at the moment) and I checked the Alice Cooper scene in WW. You can't see Derek onstage but.. The exact sequence in the backstage area: Wayne and Garth enter the band's room. Wayne:"Alice... is this cool?" showing his backstage pass Alice:"Yeah, come on in." Wayne:"Sorry to bother you, but.." That moment Wayne and Garth are right behind Derek, who sits there holding a glass of beer in his right hand. He's got real long hair and you can see him for less than a second (I guess 10-15 frames:-). So this is enough to get mentioned in the credit....

Another bit we found: In "Three of hearts" there's a scene at the end of the movie where William Baldwin is in hospital. After a while you can hear the well known "Dr.Player, Dr.Player, .." from Queensryches Operation Mindcrime.

So much for now - jerry :--)

Hello everyone, it's BABS. First let me thank everyone who cleared up the Mike P and "Free Mike Tyson" question. Something deep down told me that Mr. Portnoy had a greater appreciation for women than that! As for our Ytse Convention, let me tell you the response has been overwhelming and not one negative thought! I spoke with my boss who coordinates regional and national conferences for various education committees that he is on. He suggested that since this would be the first one to keep it as simple as possible. He also suggested like a lot of you did to set up regional areas and then try to combine everyone in the USA. The person who sent a post to the list saying "how lucky all of us in the United States were" made me feel really bad. I'm not trying to exclude anyone! This is my first time of doing anything like this, so "I'm begging you from the bottom of my heart to show me understanding" (Sound familiar, I just couldn't resist). Here's how I want to start, I need to hear from people along the Eastern seaboard. I can identify with the Long Islanders, since I am about 5 hours upstate (SUNY-Geneseo), but first things first I need numbers and then we can better guage location. I also respect Jarrod in Portland's imput, I want to keep cost down as well. Although I'm not a college student (single mom), I can identify. Just found a typo you all, I meant input. BE PATIENT! I will keep posting updates to the list. Again, thanks to everyone for their ideas I am very pleased to know that you are all a friendly and positive bunch. Now what's this that I have seen on the list about "molesting livestock" something about goatherds? -BABS
