I guess I would count, since I'm the North American distributor of the
Elephant-talk (King Crimson/Robert Fripp) mailing list :)
If you want to subscribe send a message to kbibb@arastar.com
asking to be subscribed (the list isn't under listserv control).
> And for those who have never heard KC, I'm not sure which album you
> should go with.
This topic has been discussed on a.m.p many times. The results are
unclear. Some people recommend the samplers (so the new listener can
get an idea of what the 5 phases of KC sound like) while others
recommend specific albums.
If you prefer a sampler, the current one is called "The Abbreviated
King Crimson" (if I remember right--the only sampler I own is the
Young Person's Guide which is excellent, but lacks the 80's band).
If you'd like actual albums, I suggest either "Red" (for the mid-period
sound) or "Discipline" (for the Adrian Belew era). These two albums
are usually near the top of the KC polls.
King Crimson has an EP which was made during their first rehearsal available
which is called VROOOM. The new album "Thrak" will be available in early
April.
In summary, the 5 eras and the top ranking albums from each era (periods
1 and 5 really only have 1 album available :-/
Period #Albums Album
------ ------- -----
1 1 In the Court of the Crimson King
2 4 In the Wake of Poseidon (maybe Islands--I don't recall)
3 4 Red
4 3 Discipline
5 1 VROOOM
My faves from these periods are:
Period Album
------ -----
1 In the Court of the Crimson King
2 In the Wake of Poseidon
3 Larks' Tongue in Aspic
4 Beat
5 VROOOM
For completeness, the albums King Crimson has done so far (minus the recent
box sets and samplers):
In the Court of the Crimson King
In the Wake of Poseidon
Lizard
Islands
Earthbound (live)
Larks' Tongue in Aspic
Starless and Bible Black
Red
USA
Discipline
Beat
Three of a Perfect Pair
VROOOM

This is my official first post on the jam.
To be honest, i am dissappointed at the content that is discussed in the jam. I thought that since this was a DT mail list, that DT would be discussed. Apparently not. There is more plain talk than useful info about DT, or even just mention of DT.
I am currently on Rush's mail list, "The National Midnight Star", and Megadeth's mail list, "The Rattler", and these lists do a really good job of sticking to the topic at hand--Rush and Megadeth. Not to be putting down this list or anything, but I would just like to see more about Dream Theater. After all, that is why we are all here, right?
Sorry and thank you, Scott Bell

All I can say is "Wow!" I'm amazed at how many people know about these guys... When I asked about them on AOL's Dream Theater folder, everyone drew a blank.
As for what I've got, it's hard for me to know exactly. : ( My husband's friend did a really boneheaded thing: he only labelled the cassette "Pretty Maids." Can someone identify the album for me? Some of the songs are (mind you, I'm guessing at this based on the lyrics) "Loud and Proud," "Needles in the Dark," and "Love Games."
If anyone can help me obtain other albums or dub theirs for me, please contact me privately. Thanks!!

Hey Kaoru!
I noticed you are back on Ytsejam after being gone for a while.. welcome, as usual. I have a question for you.
I am studying Japanese in college and right now we are learning how to translate foreign words into Katakana. I think (THINK) that Dream Theater is being translated "Do ri i mu Shi a ta a" based on the katakana on the Awake CD I got from Japan. Is this right? Is it close? Either way... how the heck to I translate "Rush"? :)
Arigato, for any help you can give me!

Hi Jammers! I wanted to get your opinions on The Live in Long Island DT boot from last tour. I'm talking about the 1 that is a two disc set (although I think they are sold seperately). I saw the set list on the discog and it looks pretty good. I was just wondering about the sound quality. For comparision, I have LitS, DoE, and Home Sweet Home. How does it sound compared to those?
You can post here or mail me if you like.
My bootlist has been growing alot lately. Mail me if you would like to see a copy.
Also, I'm on the look-out for any new non-US DT boots that have different set lists. I heard that the 1st Japan show used the same set list as the US shows. I heard that they were supposed to start playing Scarred. I would LOVE a tape of this.

I'm thinking about doing a DT-poll here? Ok, I'm not exactly thinking about doing it myself, I don't really know how to go about doing one, but maybe someone else is. Has it been done recently? I don't know the amount of people subscribing, is it 500, 1000 or more? I guess you'll need some automathized routine for taking care of the votings, if someone feel like doing it please respond!
Here are some possible questions:
- Rank top-3 fav DT-songs - fav album - fav live-number - fav lyric - fav vocal/guitar/keyboard/bass/drum-part - top-3 other favourite bands
and possibly personal stuff like age, sex etc to see what kind of guy/gal the average Ytsejam-subscriber is. (probably 25 year old male american, am I right)
Since so many people write in and share their favourite xxx every once in a while, wouldn't it be nice to get it down, the full facts. Maybe we could hand over the results to the guys in the band too.

Well, not to mean to be an asshole or anything, but what are YOU doing about it? Complaining never accomplishes a goddamn thing. The reason so little is being talked about re: DT is because not much is happening in DT's world right now. The major DT-related discussion threads are Kevin Moore's demos, and the early Japan shows, at the moment. During the time around the Awake release, and during the US tour at its fullest, there was nothing BUT DT posts, and lots of them. Try being on TNMS right after a tour ends, when everyone knows nothing is going to happen for MONTHS. I've been on TNMS for years, I've seen it. Tedium and thread tangents begin anew... What I'm getting at is, don't judge a mailinglist by the content at a down time for the band. Same with Megadeth's "rattler"... I just went to the opening show of the Youthanasia tour in Phoenix. Am I pumped about Megadeth? You bet! Am I pumped about Dream Theater? Not much, these days, but I will be this summer when they return to the States touring. Does this mean I like Megadeth more than Dream Theater? Hell no... it's just that a LOT more is happening in Megadeth's world right now. Things will be pretty dead on "rattler" when the tour is over and Dave & Co. are on vacation.
> I am currently on Rush's mail list, "The National Midnight Star", and > Megadeth's mail list, "The Rattler", and these lists do a really good job > of sticking to the topic at hand--Rush and Megadeth. Not to be putting
The TNMS is screened and moderated by some good-intentioned people (Dave & Jimmy) who nonetheless have an effect similar to that of the mythical Big Brother/Thought Police on the content of the posts. No controversial topics... kids, play nice, everyone get along. I like it here better; we can at least discuss BOOTLEGS. (oooooo, evil) I don't even bother posting on TNMS much because I have absolutely nothing to say about Rush that hasn't been said before or else is considered controversial, and thus will not be included in the digest. Ytsejam is a true free realm. Enjoy it while it lasts... the net is growing larger by the hour.
Well, I've said my lot, and I'll step back down and get back to work on the FAQ now. (sorry for the delay Jammers) Please understand that this is not intended as a flame; simply as a firm refutation of the attitude that we have to be told what to talk about and when to talk about it, and that this has to continue even when there's nothing substantive to talk about. Commentary is welcome. So are flames, I guess. I've been on the net long enough not to be too concerned about them. I'm sure I riled up some strait-n-narrow people really good!

Re: Crimso...
They are the definition of a prog-rock/prog-metal band. They have odd time galore, heaps of strange chords, jazz like vocal melodies and more imagination than rpobably the rest of the rock world put together! Stuff worth checking out IMHO: Red, Larks Tongues in Aspic (one of the coolest titles I have ever heard) and Discipline (the 80's band). Those threee would give a reasonable idea of what they did. They also have a newie out called VROOOM! -- I have heard it and I gotta say it is unlike anything I have heard from any other band. DT fans will probably like it for the total weirdness :)

Dear jammers,
There's a new bootleg out of the October 28th show at the Manhattan Center. It's called "Kick into a Dream" It's a 2CD set. BTW, if you listen to LaBrie a little before Another Day, he says "These guys are losing it!" Well, he's saying that to me and my friends, because I was up in the front row bowing to Petrucci!
So, if you catch it, listen to it!! It's produced by Why Not?

Recently I got the list of the all of the MD title which is previously released in Japan. According to it, unfortunately Awake isn't released on MD. But some rock music like Ozzy, ELP, Santana, Journey, Judas Priest, Aerosmith, TOTO, Pink Floyd, Fight, Europe, Pretty Maids, White Snake and etc... are released in Japan. >> By the way: anybody can tell me when & on what exact channel this DT >> concert broadcasted on japanese pay tv will be? Probably I heard from one Japanese ytsejammer on 1/24(Myung's birthday!) live at the Urawashi Bunka Kaikan in Saitama will be live broadcasted on WOWOW, which is Japanese pay tv by satellite. We are lucky, but the only grave problem to vex me is that I don't have the equipment to access to it..... :-(

Yes. I really dislike that form of mailing lists. On the Queensryche mailing list, I write messages only to find them majorly edited in the weekley edition by Shag. I say, "LeBrie and Tate both have taken opera lessons" thats what I mean, but Shag changes it to "voice" lessons which totally changes the meaning of the sentence and they're not my words. I'll stick with this type of mailing list anyday just because we're free to say anything we want.
