I've never heard "Eve" before, but somebody told me that it was the
instrumental section before "Pull me under" on "Dance of Eternity". I
don't have "Doe", but is that song before PMU "Eve?"

When I first got Magellan's latest album "Impending Ascension",
I didn't think I would like it as well as "Hour...". But, it has grown
on me considerably and now I listen to it more often than "Hour...".
Both albums are similar enough that if you like one, you'll most likely
enjoy the other, though it make take a bit of time.
"Impending Ascension" does not have a drummer on it (except for
one song where Jethro Tull's Doane Perry guest-drums), but I think that
the drums have improved and become more subtle. Actually, I really
love the drumming, which I never would have thought if you'd told me
beforehand that it was a drum machine. Magellan's drums are definitely
more energetic and interesting than many 'real' drummers out there.
I'm glad they didn't move to a live drummer since I love the way Trent
Gardner composes the drum's parts -- a live drummer might not come up
with such interesting rhythms and dynamics.
BTW, I agree about giving old Kansas a try -- great stuff!

            THANK YOU! :)

I will indeed keep everyone as up to date as I possibly can.

Again, the plans right now are for the first disc to contain
unreleased rarities, special tracks, and miscellany. The When Dream And
James Unite disc will probably be SECOND or THIRD since I want to get
good versions of every song on it beforehand.

When I was listening to Caught in a Web the other day, I noticed something that sounded familiar. It's the drum beat that Portnoy plays at 1:40 of the song and lasts for about ten seconds. I then switched discs to Van Halen's OU812 and put on AFU, Naturally Wired (track #3). Sure enough, they are the same. Alex Van Halen's intro to that song and Mike's part in CIAW are identical. That was the first time I'd ever heard Portnoy playing something similar to another drummer (maybe some of you have found examples, but I never had until now). I don't think Mike cites Alex as an influence anywhere I've read, including the FAQ, so I wonder if it's coincidence or if he digs Van Halen. If anybody here has OU812, you should make the comparison, it's kinda cool. Also, if anyone finds other such similarities in DT's music to someone else's, post. It's interesting when you can find stuff like that considering DT's style is so unique. __________________________________________________________ | Andrew Joseph Feyder | "You know, life moves pretty | | Gustavus Adolphus College | fast. Well, I know of at least 2 DT posters that are avaliable... One is from I&W and is the CD cover... (I bought it at a CD shop at home for $2... they had it up on the wall, and I asked the guy if they had any others to sell... they didn't buy he told me I could have the one from the wall!!!) and the other is the band photo from the Awake CD liner. This poster is a long and narrow one... I have one from C-Man (havn't seen you here for a while... you still w/ us?) and another that I conviently got from the Strand in Providence at the 1st show of the tour when a security guard turned around... Both of them are cool if you can find them and make an excellent addition to any college dorm room... :)

I just wanted to mention that I got a full-sized poster of the I&W album cover as well as a twelve inch promo flat which has the Majesty M on the back. At the same store, with my purchase of Awake, I got a poster of the picture in the CD with the band in the studio as well as a twelve inch promo flat of that album cover as well. While the Awake stuff was new, the I&W poster and flat were used--by the store for promotional purposes, so they sold them to me cheap ($.25 for the flat; $1.00 for the poster) I guess it's got a lot to do with connections; I've never seen another store carry Dream Theater posters. Anyway, this should restore some hope now that you know this stuff exists! Happy hunting! :)

Hello fellow DT maniacs! It's so nice to see and read about friends who don't sharpen 12-ft machetes the 112th time you decide to listen to "Bombay Vindaloo". I've been reading a lot about DT I never knew before and I just wanted to say thanks (big tear-drop in my eye and soft violin music in the distance). I'd also like to stop lurking and start contributing:

    1) Mike, could you find it in your heart to include me on the list for one of your wonderful CD's? Thankyew.

    2) Has anyone ever heard anything from Neil Peart about Mike Portnoy? I always hear him talk about Matt Cameron and Dave Abses.. (Pearl Jam's old drummer) and Herb Alexander as being the fathers of the revivalism in drumming this decade, but never Mike. What's Up??

    3) Is there anyone else out there who simply cannot bring themselves to get excited about Fates Warning? When DT came to Denver last November, Fates opened up. I made a passing comment as we waited for the show to start that went "I wonder if DT would be willing to have a vote to see if the audience would rather skip the opening band?" A young lady heard me and put her best Leona Helmsley face on and replied,"they're a GREAT BAND! Who'd you buy dope from?" Honestly...I've tried my best to like them (I own Parallels), but I can't do it. Is there any help for me?

    4) To the guy who wanted transcriptions of Awake, the recent issues of Guitar World and Guitar School have scripts of Erotomania and a 6-string arrangment of CIAW (very cool-tune 6 to B and 5 to F#. You can also figure a lot of The Mirror with this) Write back if you or anyone wants copies of it. (Is that legal?) I also have music for Lie if you like that song.

Well that's it for now. Thanks again!

By default, when you subscribe to this list, you're concealed. What does this mean?

It means that the "review" and "recipients" commands won't display your email address. It also means that your address doesn't show up with a "statistics" command.

If you worry about privacy, and you don't want people on this list to know you are here, this is a Good Thing (tm).

However, you might *want* others to see your address. If this is the case, it's pretty easy to change this. Just send:

    set ytsejam conceal no

to ytsejam-request@arastar.com with a blank subject line (or "asdf") and you should convert over to unconcealed :)

Si senor... that be EVE... they do it on a lot of recordings before PMU and they also do it before Learning to Live...

And it's available (studio version) with the Japanese version of Awake.

After listening to some boots from the Awake tour... I have a few observations to share with you people.

I also saw them live twice in a row... Santa Ana and Hollywood...

    1. Dream Theater was much more "in the groove" this time around compared to the last tour. They weren't quite so "mechanical" like the I&W tour and they seemed to be actually enjoying themselves while onstage. It's a wonder what one world tour can do to the band's unity, even without a crucial member like Kevin Moore.

    2. Mike Portnoy is far more incredible live than he is on the albums. It sometimes shocks me to hear how he plays some of the songs live compared to the albums... They should just release live albums... ;) Also I'm sure having Mark Zonders around keeps him from slacking a lot... :)

    3. Not as many songs from WDADU and the unreleased stuff this time around. By the time they got out here to the west coast, it was all Awake & I&W. No Eve or To Live Forever or the ever epic ACoS. I envy those who got to see TOWHTSTS.

    4. Derek Sherinian was very good but was more mechanical than Kevin Moore. Just an observation. It's expected since Kevin was playing his own songs.

    5. LaBrie sounded a lot better!

    6. Fates Warning KICKED MAJOR ASS...

    7. Backstage passes are cool... uh huh huh huh... (shut up Beavis!)

Fates Warning is not for the average Joe, and I can understand that a LOT of people who listen to Rush, Dream Theater, etc etc... cannot listen to FW... it's because the subtlety just rushes by you if you're not paying attention...

Confirmed to be on it are A Change of Season, To Live Forever acoustic version, Eve studio , Eve live with samples, TLF live with instrumental jam, Wanted Dead or Alive and Don't Look Past Me demos, remixes and edits of Lie, CIAW, Status Seeker, and Afterlife (Broon), some vocalist auditions, and if I can fit anything more on there, I will. (ACOS is 20 minutes long! whoa!!)

I agree with Scott. I'm really bored to see msgs with: "I like this, I like that!" This is not discussing. Who cares if you like Queensryche? Who cares if you like 400 bands? We can talk about many things of the DT world (Progressive, Guitar,Bass,Keyboards and Drums play, Live acts, bands into prog, and many other things) But making the list of your preferred bands is NOT discussing. Sorry for my bad English. bye Alf

I don't know, it just seemed to lack something. Actually, it struck me as being a bit cheesy. So, that's why I gave it to Kryt (you're welcome, btw 8) I guess I learned my lesson: listen to a CD before you buy it, even if it comes highly recommended. (My tastes are a bit weird). --Stephen P.S. There has been some talk recently about a guitar arrangement of SDV. I have figured out the melody line (the easy part), and I can fake the verse part, so if anyone wants me to tab it out I'll see if I can steal some time to do so. Also, I have figured out bits and pieces from the guitar parts of Awake, like The Mirror/Lie, 6:00, and a couple of others. Naturally, there are no solos in there (I am lacking in that department), and what I have figured out is sketchy in places and downright incorrect in others, but if anyone is interested, I might just tab out a bunch of stuff.

Mike, What is going to be the track listing on the cd of unreleased material? Do you know yet?

Also I would appreciate if any ytsejam subscribers could write a review of Magellen's IMPENDING ASCENTION.

    Thanks for your time everyone!

I picked up Keb Mo' awhile back -- needless to say it is NOT our esteemed keyboard player -- but a failed funk guitarist from the old Casablanca label who thought he might sell a lot of records if he played watered down Delta blues on a major label. He is a competent guitarist and a ... tuneful singer, but his performances (imo) lack any semblance of soulfulness and intensity. The lyrics of his original tunes aren't the most original either. If you want to hear something good on Columbia's new version of the Okeh label, check out G Love and Special Sauce. "Blues rap" with great production.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Dream Theater ...

About TNT I don't know, but I've always thought Malmsteen is Swedish. Helloween actually are from Hamburg, Germany, my place of birth :-) . Someone correct me please, if I'm wrong (oh no, I KNOW I am from Hamburg ;-) ).

    Dear jammers,

Some of you were asking about the new bootleg "Kick into a Dream" recorded on October 28th at the Manhatten Center. I wrote about it a few digests ago when it first came out. It's a 2CD set, produced by Why Not? records. The quality is pretty good. I got this set for $48 at my local bootleg store.

Whoever gets the CDs, listen to what LaBrie says right before Another Day. He says "These guys are losing it!" after he waved to me and my friends when we were bowing to John Petrucci.

Also, this may not interest most of you, but you can faintly hear me yell "Hey Mike!" right before Metropolis I. I guess I was pretty close to the bootlegger.

    Yours, Jeff =)

Ghee, no! That's a misunderstanding (if I do understand YOU right :) ). "Perhaps we could put together a list [roll, chart ?] of all German subscribers of this mailing list." hits it better.
