[Please ignore the garbled & aborted messages sent from this address
previously--my system was having problems accomodating a text file,
caused curiously in part by the "y" in Queenryche... Sorry for the
    overuse of bandwith!]

Fellow members of the Ytsejam mailing list:

The following is a small excerpt from my fantasy and weird fiction fanzine
_Yawning Vortex_ (though the 'zine is usually not concerned with music),
consisting of reviews and commentary on the latest albums of Dream Theater
and Fates Warning and the last date of the first leg of their U.S. tour,
which I attended at the Palace in Hollywood, CA on Dec. 9th. Both bands
have always struck me as being very literate and evocative of horror,
fantasy, and science fiction in a sense. As evidenced from the DT FAQ, it
does seem that John Petrucci in particular was impressed with Rod Serling.

Allow me to say that I have never experienced a finer concert that that
December night with Dream Theater, whose music has had a profound impact
on me. As a young writer (of both fiction and songs) and guitarist, I am
particularly stirred and amazed by the imagery and emotion present in
Dream Theater's songs. For any familiar with the author H.P. Lovecraft,
there are times when I wonder if that bizarre character Erich Zann may
have crafted certain sections of DT's songs!

No doubt this will come as old news to some, but since I just discovered
the progressive metal newsgroup (I am not particularly active on the net)
I thought some of you who are similarly inclined to reading things of a
fantastic nature would be interested in my musings. It isn't often that I
find a particular piece of music that can actually embody the sensations
printed on the page of a book such as Thea von Harbou's "Metropolis"--or
that early film of Fritz Lang's. Dream Theater has proven themselves to
be strikingly intelligent and unique (they do not require the trappings
that many bands do to survive).

Kudos to James, John, John, Mike, Kevin, and Derek--keep the flame alight!

"Weirdness and Wakefulness: Beyond the Wall of Sleep with New Releases
from Dream Theater & Fates Warning"
    by Perry M. Grayson

Exploding and transcending progressive metal to new heights come new
albums from two bands--one young, one veteran. Dream Theater's "Awake"
renews a field of music that has long been ignored in favor of what the
masses call alternative. With sister band Fates Warning, Dream Theater's
new disc, two years in the making, ensures the continuance of that melodic
form of progressive hard rock/metal. Fates Warning continues to grow
accessible with their new release "Inside Out."
"Awake" is a milestone in hard rock recording. It represents the
longest of all such albums in recent years, including behemothic opuses by
the likes of Metallica's eponymous release of 1992 and Queensryche's
"Operation: Mindcrime" & "Empire". Measuring a total of 75 minutes of
surreal complexity, "Awake" tows new headway into the musical unknown.
The eleven songs evoke a cosmic grandeur, wonder, and terror that is
similar to the written work of Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Frank
Belknap Long, and bears much in common with newer horror writers like
    Ramsey Campbell and Thomas Ligotti.
The dexterity and tasteful phrasing of guitarist John Petrucci covers
nearly every millisecond of "Awake". Petrucci is a prime catalyst in what
makes Dream Theater succeed in being both 'heavy' and melodic at the same
time. He has taken the music to new heights by using custom 7-string
guitars, and his chunks of low "B" string rhythm flow from his pick and
meld with the other facets of the band. This is part of what
distinguishes DT from a number of faceless bands who persist in purveying
a detuned, monotonous drone--complete with shouting, growling, gurgling,
or whining "vocals". The balance between subtle clean-tone passages,
acoustic strains, and searing solos are John Petrucci's textural
contributions to the complete sound of Dream Theater. His phrases of
melody, even in the most rapid of all his solos are startlingly
coherent--they are at times feverishly lucid, classically-influenced, and
strikingly exotic. For his fretboard work on "Awake", John Petrucci
attains a place among the foremost guitarists of rock and metal, putting
him in a position to rival Yngwie Malmsteen, Marty Friedman, Steve Vai,
Jason Becker, Joe Satriani, Kirk Hammett, and a host of other top names in
    that field.
Vocally, "Awake" boasts a tenured James La Brie, who after staying
with DT through "Images & Words", has proven to have a singing skill that
cannot be equalled by those who are not trained as well as he is. Some of
La Brie's finest work shines through and touches the core of the listener
with poetic words conveyed clearly, with an attitude well suited to both
the lulls of slow ballad's and galloping motifs of driving anthems like
"6:00" & "Lie". The lyrics falling delivered by James La Brie are written
adeptly by every band member, including departed keyboardist Kevin Moore.
Both images and words succeed on "Awake", just as they did on the album of
that name. The songs embody a tone of solitude and the gripping questions
of men and women of Earth looking out on the vast veil of stars--and within
    themselves.
A rhythm section has rarely if ever been as solid as Dream Theater's.
Mike Portnoy bashes the skins from the very beginning of "6:00" and
unleashes rhythmic furies one would think well-suited to sacrificial rites
in some far off country Frank Long once wrote a story about for Weird
Tales. His mastery of drums is not a blind pounding coming from feet that
relentlessly slap at the bass pedals; he and John Myung, who is much more
than a mere adequate bassist, adeptly set the pace through mazes and
hurdles of unique twists in time and feel changes. Keyboardist Kevin
Moore brought new dynamics to the brand of progressive metal that Dream
Theater pioneered, and though he is present on "Awake" it is a
disappointment to see him go--but not if he is replaced by someone just as
    familiar with the keys.
Fates Warning shared a vocalist in common with Dream Theater at one
time. Initially singing for Fates Warning on albums between 1984 and
1987, John Arch navigated towards DT after leaving Fates Warning to let
Ray Alder take over as the front-man. Alder's refreshing adaptability was
brought new horizons for the band on "Perfect Symmetry", the bands 1989
album, culminating in their newest offering "Inside Out".
The new songs are accessible and provide great contrasts to earlier
material from Arch's furlough. The band continues to evolve and push the
limits. Queensryche may well be the band most respected by the
record-buying public, garnering orchestra treatment for their "Silent
Lucidity", but IMHO the musicianship is far excelled by Fates Warning in
their latest offering (this is not to offend fans of this adept
band--Queensryche deserves much recognition too). Co-lead guitarists Jim
Matheos and Frank Aresti compliment each other's playing prowess.
Matheos' songwriting dominates the disc and shifts into new territory. On
"Outside Looking In" the band utilitizes that classical power of silence
between massive chords. Matheos' lyrics invoke the florid timescapes of
Lord Dunsany's dreaming tales on "Island in the Stream": "Have you stood
at the edge of the world Where the sea and sky collide Looked out to a
distant horizon And dreamed of drifiting away"
Ray Alder is a wide-ranged vocalist who stands out above the rest of
progressive metal bands who, for the most part, have vocals that stick to
the high end of the spectrum; Alder can explore many angles of the tonal
    range.
In concert the older of the two bands, Fates Warning, opened for Dream
Theater. Fates Warning played a solid set of songs consisting of material
from their last three albums. And while not working the crowd up into a
frenzy, they managed to present a live presence that rivals their studio
material. They left the stage without an encore for headliners Dream
Theater, the young but diligent band, who began their assault with "Pull
Me Under", the most popular single off of their 1992 release "Images &
Words". Their extended forays into improvisation between and in the
middle of songs showcased the new road keyboardist Derek, Petrucci, Myung,
and Portnoy. Together, with La Brie in the front, Dream Theater is a
    force to be reckoned with.

    With all best wishes,

Hi, again. I'll write about Osaka show on 16th. Set list had not changed, and James was still in not-good condition. I saw them from the second floor, and found the beautifulness of the lighting effects. Since then, I'd never seen DT show from above (except at NYC - but I was in left side and didn't pay any attention for the lighting). The lighting was simple but effective, I think. Mike failed from the beginning of 6:00, but he started it again soon. There were NO samplings through the show (in Kawasaki,either.). I don't know why. There were some happenings, but I saw they did their best. James seemed to be painful especially in AD and Voices. But his condition was better than 14th. Derek mixed Voices up with The Silent Man in the biginning of TSM. We held our breathes and waited, John P glossed over it. Metropolis was great! The instrumental section was awesome, and it's going to be more great day by day! Well, I saw DT shows for 8 times before, so I found some mistakes, but my friend who saw DT show first time said : It was AWESOME!!! I think so, too. In Osaka, I saw DT helped each other,it told me that they are all humans. :) I've forgotten a great thing : James said Awake got platinum disc in Japan!! After the show, I met them all, but they were SO tired... Derek told me that it was bad show, and they need more rehearsal. This time James came to Japan saparately, and the trip took a looong time (over 30 hours!). He came to Japan from Toronto via Pittsburg and London (because of bad weather) and he arrived at Japan on the day Japan tour began. It's reasonable if his health broke down... But they done the shows!! I respect DT so much!!! Date: Wed, 18 Jan 1995 18:13:58 -0500 (EST) G-Man wrote: >DT looking unhappy on stage? And, this time in Japan, Myung seems so happy. He smiles at the audience, shakes their hands, and so on. :) I saw Myung woar the Ytsejam T-Shirt in Osaka. It's cool! :) Sorry for long post in poor English! I just finished transcribing all of "Eve" for 2 guitars, and bass. One guitar plays all the piano parts, and since I don't play piano, I didn't transpose the chords. But it works. Also, I took it from the CD Single, except for one part, which I took from the way they used to play it live (only because I liked it better)...

I'll try and post it, or put it up on the archive. I'd be interested in comments.

I can't agree with that. I just can't get into Magellan. For me, I&W was like the second coming. Kevin Moore is such an incredible player. The Magellan discs seem to lack emotion. There's some nice keyboard parts, but most of the keys are so mechanical sounding.

Plus that drum machine- no matter how good the programming is, it just lacks that band 'feel' that DT has.

The following was reported in some trade magazine concerning the London DT show.

The report said that Glenn Tipton would join DT on a Judas Priest cover, Barney from Napalm Death would join them on a Metallica cover, and Steve Howe would be joining them on a Yes medley.

I don't know the name of the magazine, and I just heard this from a friend at a local record store.

I also heard that DT is recording the show professionally for possible b'sides and they are also having 3 cameras recording the festivities.

Hopefully, this will all see the light of day.

I think this should be: "Chotto matte kudasai" (Native nihongo speakers please feel free to correct any mistakes in this post.)

"Matte kudasai" can be translated "Please wait" (It is a polite way of saying it, so I don't think that "waitaminnit" would be a good translation).

"Chotto matte kudasai" can be translated as "please wait a second"--the chotto modifies the wait into a short wait. Once again, this is a polite way of saying this.

"Chotto" would be like saying "waitaminnit" since it's informal :)

Hello fellow brothers of Dream Theater,

O.K., I just recently joined the ytsejam and I'm really pumped that there are so many DT fans like me out there. What's funny is that when I picked up the LaTM (is that right?) I thought I had all the albums DT put together and here I am thinking yeah, I'm set. But then I discover that there's so much more DT music out there that I'd love to get my hands on. Actually, I for one can't stand Dominichi's voice - I think it just plain old sucks (that's probably why I only feel the same for ytse jam as I do for all other newer DT songs). So, my point is that I really don't know how to get copies of these bootlegs which are floating around. That's why I'm looking for help from my buddies here (hell, I don't know you guys, but if you listen to Dream Theater then you must be cool!). I definately want to get all of WDADU with James' voice and whatever else is out there. Where do I start? Could somebody please TAKE THE TIME to help me out. I know you're all probably tired of hearing lame pleas like this one but I'd really appreciate any help I could get. Oh, and I hope to see you guys when DT plays in the states (preferably near the stage!)

To the guy who wanted to know which albums to get by Pat Metheny and/or John McLaughlin:

Pat Metheny: I would suggest 'Secret Story' and 'The Road To You (live)' - AMAZING!

John McLaughlin: I would recommend (as a starter album), 'Que Alegria'

Good luck on your musical quest... :)

So basically... after all that... it's saying "hang on a second"... or "waittaminute" or "just a sec"...

    same thing...
