Someone said that Lifeson was the only original member of Rush left. Well
according to the bio in Rush Chronicles that is wrong. The Bio says that Lee
and Lifeson were playing together way back in 60's before they were Rush and
that they hooked up with that drummer who played one album. I don't know if
that info is right but since that was a Rush album I would say that it
    probably is.

Well, first off, Will Calhoun is an amazing drummer. I love him. But in
answer to your question he recently released a solo album called Housework.
I have been looking for it for awhile and I can't find it. It is a solo cd
in the truest sense. It's Will playing 8 different drum solos based on the
styles of various artists like Art Blakely, Billy Cobham and Al Foster.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
                                                                        JUNE 19,
    1995

    DREAM THEATER TO RELEASE
    "A CHANGE OF SEASONS"

Dream Theater fans know what buttons to push. For years now, the group's fans
have been demanding to know when the band would finally lay down it's live
'cult classic' 22 minute opus, "A Change Of Seasons," on tape. The song,
which has become legendary among Dream Theater fans around the world, has
only been performed live by the band on two occasions: once in Germany and
once in New York City. Bootleg versions, however, have left fans hoping
that one day the group would sanction a release of the ethereal masterpiece.

Their patience will not go unrewarded. Due to the amazing amount of letters,
phone calls, and a massive fan-initiated campaign organized over the Internet
that flooded the record company with requests for "A Change Of Seasons," the
group hit the studio in May to put together a live compilation album that
will feature the song as it's centerpiece. The album, aptly titled A Change
Of Seasons, will also feature live material which was recorded at Ronnie
Scott's Jazz Club in London on January 31st of this year. That show saw the
group perform a plethora of cover songs dedicated to their idols, which
included material by Pink Floyd, Rush, Elton John, Queen, Yes, and Genesis.

The group is also currently working on new material for their next studio
album, not due out until the summer of 1996. A Change Of Seasons, sure to
whet their fan's appetite until then, will hit stores in September of this
    year.

    First:

In the past weeks of reading the Jam, and being a relatively new fan of DT
and a new member to the Jam I have seen many DT songs refered to which I have
never heard of. These are somgs which aren't on the albums I have, these
being: WDADU, Instrumental II, IAW, Awake, and Live at the Marquee. I know
that 'Eve' can be found on the single for Silent Man(the german import).
Could somebody e-mail me a complete list of all the DT songs and from whence
they came or direct me to some place where this info is available.

    Second:

Being a DT fan I would really like to get my hands on a copy of Subconcious.
Seeing as how this looks to be very very very unlikely I was wondering if
any of you lucky ones who own it might be willing to put it on tape if I
mailed you a cassete. Please e-mail about this one too if you are willing.

    Hi!
To George Bast, who asked about Gamma Ray:
I can't say that they are a new group because it was founded in 1989 by
    Kai Hansen,the ex-Helloween guitarist.They have (as I know) 4 albums and
    an E.p..The albums are:
        Heading For Tomorrow '89
        Sign No More '91
        Insanity & Genius '93
        Land Of The Free '95
        Gamma Ray E.p. '?
The music is Power Metal, just like the music of Helloween.(old Helloween).
If you want more information e-mail me,and sorry if it isn't exact, but at
home I have more infos about Gamma Ray.

     SORRY FOR THE NONE-DT CONTENT

A while back I remember reading about someone reserving a spot in their CD
changer for certain CD's. One of those was an album by Helloween called "Pink
Bubbles Go Ape" or something like that. I'm a huge fan of Helloween's and know
of a mailorder place where I could purchace it. The problem is that I don't
know anything about that particular CD.

Would the person who posted that response (or anyone else that has any
information on that CD) please respond back here to describe the track list, and
most importantly, if Micheal Kiske is still singing.

    Thank You.

James was pissed off at some dork in the audience who had obnoxiously and
continuously screamed all the words to "Surrounded." James hopped off
stage to go after the guy shut him up.

    What do I do for a living......hmm, that's tough. I was a college
student. First biochem-pre med, then music, classical performance on
trombone. After school and the federal gov't skrood me on my Financial
Aid and Scholarships, I decided to take a break from skool. I now work
for Rutgers University's Cook College helping to write grant
proposals, and building relational databases and things like that. I
also work for a start-up company called Sage Internet Consultants
(http://www.sic.com), where I am one of the Sys-Admins. We specialize
in advertising companies on the WWW. (If you're interested drop a line -
    yes...shameless plug, I know.)

I am trained on all of the brass instruments, a bit of piano, and
heavily trained for voice (7 years). plus i can hammer out a zep bass
line or 2 when I'm bored. My newest musical Challenge is percussion.
I've been studying with this grad student. All percussion, from snare
rudiments to timpani and marimba, to eventually set.

As far as my tastes in listening go, I will listen to anything except
for country and western. My collection has everything from dt rush and
QR to hardcore techno to rap to classic rock to classical to enya to
tori (god...i love the song "leather") I think you get the idea.

    My favorite musicians:

Drums: Steve Ferrone from Average White Band and Claptons solo stuff
and various session work- He's so effortless it almost makes me sick.
He always looks like he's having a good time.

Mike Portnoy: He is so technically good but looks like he's
    having a good time too.

Will Calhoun: Groovinest doooood around. he's just phat!!!!

    Guitar: JP: amazing...nuff said.

Vernon Reid: One of the single most creative I have ever seen.

Jimmy Page: No one is as cool as Jimmy. Saw page and PLant a
    few months ago. He rocked.

Steve Vai: He's sooooooo good it's scary. Weird tho...but
    that's ok

Bass: Geddy Lee: Phenomenal on all counts.

Sting: Police stuff was kewl. Solo stuff is ok. Good PLayer
    overall.

Vocals: James: One of the strongest singers I've ever heard. WOW

David Lee Roth: Not a great musician, but an amazing showman

Sorry if the thread is over already. I have just read the past 12
digests today. (couldn't check my mail for a week) I figure this
should be pretty complete regarding what other jammers do for a
    living.

Well, you're wrong about the only listening to prog/metal part, but I
_wouldn't_ be caught dead with Nevermind! I got a dub when it first came
out, but I liked maybe two songs on it and got rid of it later. Don't get me
started on Kurt Cobain, either... But for the record, I _am_ a fan of Alice
In Chains, also Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Mother Love Bone, and I
was into Pearl Jam before the video for "Alive" was ever released, although
I'm not into them much now. I've got Crash Test Dummies, Live, Tori Amos,
Clannad, Sarah McLachlan, Tchaikovsky, and Cranberries CDs/tapes/mix tapes in
my collection, to name a few of those that aren't exactly classified as prog
or metal! I still listen to some of the commercial rock bands like Saigon
Kick, Extreme, Baton Rouge, Europe, and stuff like that on occasion. My main
preference is power metal, but it sucks to be completely closeminded when it
    comes to music!

    Hey,

    OZRIC TENTICALS
Have you guys ever heard of a band called Ozric Tenticals? They are a
pretty cool sound. No vocals, just instrumental. In a way they remind
me of Yanni. They are prog but kind of a new type of prog. Lots of
really weird sounds (guitar-synth, rainmaker, strange processor effects).
    Try them out!

    CYNIC
Another pretty cool prog band. These guys are more on the heavier side
than DT. They kind of sound like Death only very prog. Sort of a
prog/death/fusion thing. Check them out also.

    ALSO,
Someone tell me which Rush album to get, I have the YYZ one and Presto
but not all that impressed. Tell me which ones are most progressive (DT
    style).

    Hey People!
In the last digest, Scottf ranked his favourite 5 bands. No offence, but:
    HOW CAN YOU LIKE MANOWAR?!
This band seems to be stick in the middle-ages forever. I mean, all their
albums have "steel" in them (triumph of steel, warrior of steel, balls of
steel...)! These guys remind me of me, three years ago, playing D&D and
    shit. Get a life, boyz!
To Scottf: This is DEFINITELY NOT personal. I just despise this band and
    had to say it.

I'm catching up--slowly but surely. If you have any sub/unsub/address
changes that you need, I'll be posting instructions on that early
next week (and I'll probably start autoposting them fortnightly at that
    point).

All obvious requests sent to ytsejam-owner@arastar.com (or
listman@arastar.com) should be done now. Some requests sent directly to
me are still in the queue along with all non-obvious requests (ie I
couldn't tell that the message was a request from the subject).

*WARNING* anthor.arastar.com is about to have an OS upgrade.
And a new hard drive added. Since the new OS is not a
production OS, (and since new hardware is new hardware)
there might be a few bugs. The machine should not be down
for more than 24 hours (and if it *does* crash for an extend
period of time I'll go back to the previous release). Once
the machine's stable, I'll be slowly upgrading the mailing
list software to improve performance, make it more reliable
(no more digest number skips among other things), etc.

So if things seem weird, sorry! I'll fix it as quickly as
               I can.

A few "personal" notes/thank yous and then some responses to Digest 860.

Mike: I haven't forgotten about your stuff. I'll be finishing it this
weekend (a surprise will be with it).

Babs: Howdy! :) Thanks for your fantastic efforts with the Ytsecon!
Maybe I'll be able to make next year's ;)

Nihonjin Ytsejammers: Thanks for the incredible con! I'm still planning
on writing a review of it (I'll hopefully have a chance to post
it before the end of the weekend).

There were a few things in digest 860 that I'd like to respond to (no,
I haven't read all of the backed up digests before that--I'm working
    backwards through them :)

The list isn't moderated. I don't strip stuff out.

    > Did I insert too many blank lines ?

Perhaps. It's more likely that you started a line with "From".
(The software currently will break or terminate your message at
a line which starts with "From". To get around this, put a character
in front of the "F" like:
    >From that moment on, the cymbal was a permanent part of his anatomy.

    > Or what's the reason for half of my last message being replaced by a
    > stroke-dotted line (s. digest #858) ?

    Can't explain that :-/

Used to be able to get them at ftp.uwp.edu, but I hear it's not up
anymore. Should be under /pub/music/artists... There were some
mirrors in Europe that might still be up.

Lisa Dalbello wrote those lyrics :) I've been searching for her stuff

Why don't DT follow Marillion's and Fish's example and produce their own limited edition bootlegs. You can't buy them in the shops but only through the fanclub. This way the fans will still get a regular inexpensive dose of DT live concerts, the boys will get a percentage of the profits, it will make the inofficial boots less attractive, quality will be ensured, etc.

It shouldn't be too difficult to get official bootlegs going. There are quite a number of high quality radio braoadcasts that could be used. If that doesn't work, Mike Portnoy must have hundreds of DATs with DT live recordings that could be used.

Maybe there's a member of the Marillion/Fish fanclub who knows more about getting such a project underway.

about DT covering a Maiden song? It should be a long song! I'm thinking about "Alexander the Great"( my favorite Maiden song) with the great guitar solos......."Seventh son of a seventh son" will be a very good choice too!

I have so many great DT moments, that it's hard to list them all, but I guess here are my top few...

    1) hearing PMU on the radio for the first time and just going crazy. I couldn't believe my ears - here was a song that had everything I wanted!

    2) Buying I&W a few days later and listening to it for the first time. When I heard TtT, I was hooked. When the semi-funky riff at the beginning of the song kicked in, I remember yelling YESSS! at the top of my lungs, jumping out of my seat and dancing around the room.

    3) Seeing the boys live on both the I&W and Awake tours.

Worst DT moment... While at the Awake concert, hearing that the band had done an in-store appearance that same day. I MISSED IT!

Since, from what I gather, most frequent contributors to this list are college age or just out of college, I assume you all haven't had sufficient funds yet to purchase a audiophile stereo system. If that's the case, I suggest you go to your local "toy store" and audition some of the top-end equipment with your Awake CD. Listen to The Silent Man, and be amazed.

When I first bought Awake I had a Pioneer receiver and CD player hooked to a pair of Bose 301 speakers. I thought I was pretty cool. I could play my music loud, and it sounded decent.

Then, the dough started rolling in. I got a few free-lance writing contracts and decided to upgrade my system. I now have a complete home theater comprised of the following equipment.

H/K AVR audio video receiver mated to an H/K outboard amp Panasonic Multi-play laser disc player Mirage 1090i bipolar tower speakers Mirage PS1290 powered subwoofer Mirage MCC center channel speaker Mirage 90i surround speakers.

Although not a classic audiophile system (i.e., I didn't spend $10,000+), you wouldn't believe the sound! I've discovered more nuances than you can imagine after getting this system. For example, in the Silent Man, there is a ~30-40Hz bass line during the chorus I never heard before getting my powered subwoofer. Since my system now has a real dynamic range of 25Hz to 20KHz, I can experience DT how it was meant to be heard.

What systems do you all have? If you don't have a sub, go listen to a system with one. You'll want one BAD.

Please tell me I'm wrong

We'll as far as go you are wrong...I have every album they ever put out (all 4 of them:) ). I was and still am a huge Nirvana fan. It may not be as complex or as musically creative as DT, but it still rocks. It has come to the point where the major Nirvana rip offs are appearing, bands like Offspring and Bush. The opening to Little Things by Bush sounds exactly like Teen Spirit. I am also a Smahing Pumpkins fan Smashing Pumpkins too. Billy Corgan is a lyrical genius. Im not as big of a Soundgarden or AIC fan.

I been wanting to ask everyone this: I know a lot of you are Rush fans as I am so let me ask you...I heard somewhere that they were planning on putting out a boxed set of all their albums remastered...I dont know if this is true or not...i hope it is because Ive been wanting to get some Rush albums but I dont want to start buying them separately if they are going to put out a boxed set with them all.

    Thanks Later :)

    How's it going guys?!?!

This first is in response to Timothy Adams who seemed very upset that Rod Morgenstein was going to do the drum clinic. Rod is a fantastic drummer. Don't judge his work with Winger as he was probably doing it to make money. Pick up a couple of Dixie Dregs albums to hear how good he can be. I suggest their live album "Bring 'Em Back Alive" and their latest "Full Circle." They are great albums. And if you've never heard Steve Morse on guitar, here is your opportunity. He's incredible and definitely my favorite guitarist (Don't flame me. I like JP quite a bit, just not as much as Steve).

How did I get into DT? One of my friends back in college in 1989 had WD&DU. He made a copy of it for me. I liked the music a lot, but I really didn't get into Charlie's(?) singing. I therefore only listened to it from time to time. I bought I&W when it came out. I thought it was pretty good, but didn't have a lot of opportunities to listen to it. My brother started to borrow it and I would constantly hear him play it (while I was trying to do my homeowrk!!). I don't like admitting it, but I have to say that he got me into them. I love them now and rank them up there with Rush and The Steve Morse Band.

See you in a few (maybe!!)

    Dave Silva

P.S. For the person who wrote the Maiden lyrics, isn't it "...seven HOLY paths to hell..." I'm not positive as I haven't listened to it for awhile.

Sometimes our big splashes are just ripples in the pool.
