    Hey there everybody,

Since I know there are quite a few fans of Jason Becker/Marty
Freidman/Cacophony on the list, I thought I'd let you all know the latest info.
This is from the "Buzz" section of Guitar for the Practicing
Musician, but it's near the end and in small print so I suspect a
lot of people missed it :-) This is direct from the magazine:

"Since last year's February issue featuring Jason Becker's
moving open letter about his affliction with Lou Gehrig's disease,
the mail and phone calls inquiring about Jason's solo album haven't
stopped coming in. The latest word is that the album is finished and
has been mastered, but since it's not available yet, here's the
lowdown: Entitled Perspectives, the album is more of an orchestral,
soundtrack-like recording than a guitar album per se, featuring
everything from bluesy tracks to those reflecting Middle Eastern,
African and Japanese influences to an a cappella choir. Besides the
inclusion of the Bob Dylan cover "Meet Me in the Morning" from
Guitar's Practicing Musicians: Compilation Vol. 2, most of Jason's
playing is from demos he did while he was still well. Micheal Lee
Firkins, Steve Hunter, Steve Perry and Matt and Gregg Bissonette all
appear on the album. You can write to Jason at:

                             Jason Becker
                             PO Box 5109
                             Richmond, California 94805"

Sorry to take up soo much space for a non-DT subject, but I
though this might interest a lot of you.

    Later,
    Brian Polka

This is what was SUPPOSED to have been posted the first
    time around!!!

    Steve Johnson:

    >Anywhoo, when was The Crow written?

It (or at least the first 40 pages) was originally written in 1981,
but the comic didn't actually get published until February 1989,
then got put on hiatus after four issues, until about 1991, due
to financial difficulties with the publisher.
A note of interest: before Brandon Lee came along, one of the casting
choices for Eric Draven was Charlie Sexton. :)

    >>You Crazy Diamond.' To whom are they referring, and what is the relation
    >>of that person to the band?

This album is dedicated for Syd Barrett who was the original member of the
band. "Wish You Were Here" is a favorite album of mine.

    To All,
I've got a new bootleg CD of Dream Theater. "Mind Control" is the title, which
has released by KTS. This CD includes complete show at Urawa City Hall dated
24th january of 1995 and two bonus tracks. The numbers of the bunus tracks is
"Tears" and "The Silent Man", and these are recorded live in Europe Feb. 1995.
On these bonus track, does anyone know of detail informations such as location
    or exact date?

    regards.

    Greets All!

Havent posted here in QUITE some time, but felt that I had some
info that a few of you would find neat-o

Syd Barrett was also the guitar player for the Floyd in the early
days, and can be heard on Ummagumma (i believe).

The really trippy thing is, is that after Syd left the Floyd to live
in England with his mommy (he'd done *entirely* too much acid), he
    actually SHOWED UP at
the recording of "Shine on...". Thing is, he had no prior knowledge
of the song having been written, or it being recorded....this leads
me to think that there's SOME sort of higher power at work here....:)

as far as DT goes....last I heard (rumoured) about the "ACOS" ep
that's due out, the set list was going to include ACOS, To Live
Forever (released on the Lie cd-single), Eve (possibly with the
samples), and a few other songs that they've been performing live,
but have yet to get on cd....but that, like I said, was a rumour.

..personally, I'd like to see them ask Kevin back in to do a
studio version of "Afterlife" with james singing, and the HUUUUGE
synth sound that Kevin gave it when they (used to) play it
    live....

take care, and go check out Widespread Panic....good band, and
just my one plug for y'all to broaden your musical horizons...:)

Another scary piece is the soundtrack to Jurassic Park, by John Williams. Also he's right Conan rules, but don't listen to the first track in your car on the freeway, unless you like driving about 100 mph. Star Wars does this to me also.

Michael Moorcock is one. A better question might be which SF authors' stuff Hawkwind has written songs about. Moorcock, Roger Zelazny (R.I.P.), Isaac Asimov all come to mind.

I've seen DT live three times this year. The first time in February in Ludwigsburg/Forum, the second last month in Ludwigsburg/Rockfabrik and the third time two days later in Donaueschingen/Donauhalle. Each concert was very loud, especially the drums were too loud. For the most times the keys were too low, sometimes the lead vocals also. Next year I hope to see and hear DT with another mixing-man.

It usually sounds terrible up front because you're hearing stage monitor bleed into the audience. They aren't usually EQ'd, etc. the same as a house mix. The result in the audience is a mush of main PA, monitor mixes, and instrument amps. Unfortunately, if you want to catch the sweat of the musicians you'll have to put up with it. ;^)

    Hello all,

I just got LiT after many months of hunting it down. I went into the local Best Buy, and there it was, waiting for me to buy it! So after much pleading, whining, begging, my wife consented, and I got it!

I liked the way they used the intro of the mirror at the beginning of TTT. I also liked the little bit of Pantera in the drum solo. (anyone remember the name of the song?) Overall, I thought it was pretty good. JL's voice isn't *that* bad, I think. My only disappointment was with the studio cut of PMU and TTT. I had never seen these before, and the single that I heard on the radio of PMU was full length, so I was caught off guard by the abbreviation. I don't think they sound nearly as good or flow as well as the full length versions, IMHO.

One last question: Does anyone have US tour dates yet? I have yet to see DT live, and I was really hoping to see them this summer!! ARGGGGGHHHHH!!

StatisticZ show that if a person is born with Perfect Pitch, chances are they will grow up to be a famous...Baseball Player!!! :)

Ha! A cd can only hold 75minutes! (look at awake!) Maybe their next album will be a 2 cd set! The first CD having a 75 minute trilogy (in the spirit of AMBIS) and The second CD will have Metropolis 2! Hehe... James

    > Today's rock trivia question: Rainbow was started by Ritchie Blackmore >from the remnants of a band that had been opening for Deep Purple. >Although most of you can name the now-well-known vocalist for that band, >what was name of that band?

The band was called 'Elf' and the lead singer was, of course, Ronnie James Dio

    > Pink Floyd's album 'Wish You Were Here' contains the many parted 'Shine >on You Crazy Diamond.' To whom are they referring, and what is the >relation of that person to the band?

Congrats, you be rite: the Crazy Diamond is Sid Barrett, PF's original singer and early inspiration. If memory serves me right he later suffered from some form of mental illnes and/or fried too many brain cells with abused substances

    > Now for the hard one: In Jam 876, someone referred to the early progmetal >band 'Hawkwind'. In another post, I mentioned the SciFi work of Niven & >Pournelle and its relation to Maiden's Crazy Eddie. What SciFi author >refers to Hawkwind in his writings?

All those who said Michael Moorcock are rite-on. Someone (Scott Fleming) also stated that MM also referred to Blue Oyster Cult.

    >>>> New rock trivia question: Blue Oyster Cult has also toured small >>>>clubs under a another name. What pseudonym do/did they use ??

Favorite DT member: Right now, I'd have to say John Myung. Not for his excellent bass playing per se, but rather because I seem to relate best with his personality, as described in the Jam and DT FAQ, and I enjoy his compositions most. I'm only an infantile guitarist; I try, but my fingers keep getting in my way. I have done some keys and high-class choral (classica) work, so at least I can read music.
