    Hi everyone,

I just wanted to invite you guys to check out the Joel Rivard Group home
page. I don't have all the pictures up or all the links done but there are
two sound clips available for downloading and two more coming soon. The
sounds are about 1 minute long but in 8 bit .au format so they're about
600K I think. I'd appreciate any comments anyone can give. Thanks a lot.
    The address is:

    http://www.iii.net/users/mer/joelpage.html

Oh, for DT content, I've been really influenced a lot by DT lately and I've
been making DT tapes and giving them to Joel to listen to.

BTW, I noticed something that I thought was weird. Since I listen to ACOS
so much, I listened to two Rush albums in a row and walked away with ACOS
    in my head!

    Later,

    > I normally don't, because most of the people in the mosh's I've been in,
    > seem to be ready to hurt somebody on purpose, not to have fun.

I recently had a pretty Kool expirience moshing. I've been living
in Melbourne, Australia for the past year and a half and the live
music scene is fantastic. Iv'e been to a couple of gigs where there
was moshing going on. One time, I was in the middle of the pit,
and the crowd surged back. The person in front of me began falling
back, and was standing on both of my feet, so I began falling
too. As I was falling I bumped into the person behind me and
she also started falling (Domino effect).

We all hit the ground and then the croud started moveing forward.
Someone grabbed the person in front of me by the hand and just the
momentum of the crowed pulled him/her back up. That person grabbed
my hand and pulled me up, and I grabbed the person behind me and
pulled her up. So, all three of us ended up hitting the ground
and getting pulled up with a matter of seconds.

There was no fighting. Everyone cooperated to make sure that everyone
else had fun. This is the way moshing should be!

Also, even though I love Austrialia, I'll be coming back home to
San Francisco for a while. I'm wondering if anyone can give be
some Ideas as to where the best places in SF for live music are.
I'm more into metal than prog. DT, is about the lightest music
that I like (See, DT content).

    Hey,
In response to the post about which member of the band is most
crucial to success: First of all, I just want to say that both of my
brothers are drummers, half of my friends are drummers, and most of the
answers so far have been "the drummer". So, I think the most important
member of the band is. . . the guitar player!
It's true that a band needs a good drummer to thrive, but to say
that a band needs a spectacular drummer to be good just isn't so. But,
if you really want your band to shred, especially live, you'd better have
a teriffic guitar player. If the guitar player is truly awesome, even if
the drummer, singer, and bass-player are only good (not bad, mind you)
then the band can still shake it up. Even bands that seem to downplay
the guitarist on their albums, from Rush all the way to Blues Traveler,
still turn him up when they get on stage. They know.
Since we're talking about drummers, and since people have mentioned
their amazement at Portnoy and his rhythms, I have one question: Who is
this Polly guy? Obviously, if he invented the Polly-rhythm that's been
mentioned on the list so frequently, he must be a hell of a percussionist
too. Does anyone know who he played for? Just curious.

About that great Yes album... Before '90125' was released, the band consisted
of Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, Alan White & Tony Kaye... No Jon Anderson!
With the absence of Jon, they were going to name the band Cinema. Trevor and
Chris were going to do all of the vocals. Jon came in to sing some
backups & they decided that he might as well be in the band... and if he
were back in the band... they might as well call it Yes! They were then going
to name the album Cinema... I don't know why they changes their mind, but there
is an instrumental on it called Cinema...

Hi dear jammers! I want to know if anyone is interested in having Mike:s drums "transcribed" as .mod files??? I find it very useful, since I am a guitarist. Simply, start the module, it counts in, and then just try to play the Guitar/Keyboard/Bass to it.

I really want to know if anyone is interested!! I have already made a complete score to PMU, ready to use in for example FastTracker. It`s only 4 channels right now, but if anyone insists that it sounds too bad, I can easily make it in 8-16 tracks. The reason to just use 4 tracks was because I wanted it to work on Amigas too.(I use one, for example, though I have got a PC too..) I have got plenty of ideas, for example: * - Add Bass-lines?? * - Add Keyboard-lines?? * - Add Guitars?? Comp?? Solo?? (Requires a LOT of memory, though) * - Add Channels??

If you want to try this one out (PMU), or are interested in other songs (I`ll make whatever song by DT you want, assumed that I have got the song! It's REALLY inspirating and *FUN* to do.), contact me at:

    dot@ludd.luth.se

Next song I am considering to do, is LIE, as it`s one of my faves on AWAKE. Please, write! I want to know what *YOU* want(or don`t), and it will give me *MUCH* more encourage to do it.

If it will be any response at all, I`ll let you know where to find it. (On ftp.luth.se)(Haven`t put it there yet..)Ytsejam will also get the message when it`s time to take use of `em.

Hope you`ll like this offer as much I do like to do it!

Kindly yours Magnus Alakangas (Azazel of Satariel)

Hello everyone, it's Babs. I want to extend congratulations to John Nguyen on becoming a dad. That means that I am no longer the only parent on the 'jam. There are a couple others, but they lurk and rarely post to the list. If you ever need any advice on coping w/ colic and sleepless nights, just email me direct. I probably shouldn't tell you this, but my daughter didn't sleep all night until after 2 years of age (I recommend Vivarin, but in small quantities and it's also good to eat and keep your blood sugar up - it helps you get through the day).

My daughter also likes DT. The only problem now is that she runs over to the stereo all the time and turns it up real loud, I will walk by and turn it down (just a bit) and three seconds later "little fingers" have managed to turn it back up. When I argue that she can still hear them at normal volume she sasses me and throws a tantrum. See what you have to look forward to?

Take care and best wishes, -BABS

Extreme was my favourite band before DT, but I still collect their albums. I must admit, I like their rock/funk oriented stuff (cf. Extreme & Pornograffiti) more than their later stuff but my fave Extreme song at the moment is Cynical F**K. I really dig that DT-esque chromatic riff in the bridge and that real crunchy rythmn sound Nuno uses. IMHO, there is nothing wrong with Extreme, except maybe they should be discussed on some newsgroup instead of here.

This is regarding the Extreme post: I'd have to say that III Sides is one of the best CDs I've ever heard. Phenominal music and great lyrics. When I first got "Punchline" it kinda tripped me out because it was so different but it's really grown on me and gets heavy rotation on my Cd player.

On the drummer thread: I believe it takes a really good drummer to make a band great, however, the other members are also very important. I've played drums for 14 years now and there is nothing more annoying than a guitarist or bassist who can't stay with the groove. Singers are also important because that's the biggest connection with the audience in many cases. If the singers sucks most people won't listen to the band, regardless of how great they are.

On the lyrics thread: I think it's very cool to hear what different people have to say about the lyrics and how they interpret them. This digest is an open forum with a lot of cool open-minded people on it -- Let's keep it that way!

DT content: Whenever I listen to WDADU I get a little mad that it was out in '89 and I had no clue. Of course, it saved me from waiting four years for "Images" so I guess that's okay...

IMHO, the drummer is definitely the most important member of a band. What's the most important part of a sandwich? Not the mayo. Not the lettuce.

    THE BREAD!!

It holds everything together at all times, and when it's especially good 'n' tasty, it makes the whole sandwich incredible!!

(Oh my God! I'm making cheesy sandwich analogies again! And food puns!!)

Allright, enough. Comments? Criticisms? Grey Poupon? (I've really gotta stop.) :)

    Later, 'jammers!

BTW, there's this new U2 song (I can see the flames now!) that gets played on the radio and whatnot (my co-workers force me to listen to the "pop" station 24-7). It was also featured on the Batman Forever soundtrack. I don't even know what it's called. But ANYWAY, this song KICKS ASS!! PROPER!! The entire song isn't all that hot, but the chorus is one of the best I've heard in a LONG time!! Anyone?

This may be an old thread, but here goes.

There was discussion about who was the most important in a progressive band. Well, that's very hard to determine. I think everyone has to be progressive minded and oriented. You can't have one without the other. To quote John Petrucci, as closely as I can recall, when asked how it felt to be seen as a Guitar God, said "I don't like to consider myself as a guitar god, but as a very important player in a great band." Each member is equally important. For example, look at Nuno, which is an incredible guitarist, and at some points sounds progressive, but I could play more complicated drum tracks and I'm a bassist! And that makes Extreme, in my mind, a good rock band with a great guitarist. The talent doesn't seem to be thorough and equally applied. Not saying that the drummer is NOT talented, but simply saying that he plays very basic rhythms, which detracts from a possible progressive sound...which is probably not what they want to achieve anyway. Whereas in DT, everyone plays at the height of their abilities, same as for Rush. They are perfectionists, each with the same ideals and orientation. They take a riff, and instead of repeating it throughout the song, like, oh, I don't know, Green Day?, Offspring?, they "progress" further and beyond and make it much less monotonous. So IMHO, I don't really believe there is any one person more important than the others in a progressive band. When you think of Extreme, you think of Nuno, Van Halen -> Eddie Van Halen, AC/DC -> Angus Young, and I could go on forever. But DT is different...sure everyone has their favorite, but they are all equally talented and basically virtuosos. Not so for the regular bands. Only my $0.02 worth.

I just read a report yesterday in some guitar mag about the Ronnie Scott's gig. It said to start looking for bootlegs of the show, so maybe we'll see some popping up somewhere... . God bless.

Sorry for the lack of DT content, but I am curious to know: what happened to Fates Warning? I'm not a huge fan (in fact I dont have any of their CDs - yet though I've heard Parallels and Perfect Symetry <sp?>) but they are growing on me and I plan to pick up some stuff from them soon (thanx to you guys/gals). Anyway, what's with the line up? What happened to the 2 guys (sorry, dunno their names yet)?

Hey Jammers - look what just showed up on the NMS (Rush list) (someone will probably beat me to this):

    >From: TroyRush@aol.com >Date: Fri, 21 Jul 1995 19:02:14 -0400 >Subject: Dream Theater e.p. > >I just got an advance cassette of Dream Theater's new e.p., "A Change of >Seasons," and I regret to tell everyone who thought otherwise that it does >NOT contain a cover of "Tears," or any other Rush song. > >On side 2 is live covers of Elton John, Zeppelin, Queen, Kansas, Deep Purple, >Pink Floyd, Journey, Genesis and Dixie Dregs, but nothing from the Boys. > >BTW, side 1 is a 22-minute version of "A Change of Seasons," which is finally >released legit when this e.p. comes out September 19. >Troy
