    the same year.

I saw Queensryche last night (one word) AMAZING.

Yes, Kevin Moore is back, does this mean record deal?

One last note I want to introduce the newest YTSEJAMMER to the List, 6
days old Olivia Jane Nguyen-Mesa or Mesa-Nguyen. You made it John.

mike , if you can get ahold of the acoustic versions of Voices, 6:00, and
Under a Glass Moon (yes!!!!) then by all means PUT THEM ON AD!!! even not so
good sound quality would still be worth it...

Hey Ytsejammers. Hows your weekends starting? Well, for me, I must say
that my new baby girl Olivia Jane (introduced earlier by "Uncle Andy") is
my new source of joy. I am very glad to share this news with you all.
One thing though, I HAVEN't HAD ANY MORE THAN 10 hours of sleep since
Saturday (when Olivia was born). Anyway, the great thing is that she
seems to like to fall asleep to Surrounded, Another Day, Lifting
Shadows..., and The Silent Man (their more mellow songs). That's right,
that little girl is going to grow up listening to The Boys (start them
young!). I expect her to be able to play piano piece in 11/8 and 13/7
time by the time she's eight years old!!
Anyway, my main conern is regarding Acoustic Dreams. I really hope
that Mike can find the acoustic versions of 6:00, Under a Glass Moon, and
Voices (each of those would kick ass unplugged!!). If anyone out there
can give Mike a hand in finding those, please do (do it for the kids,
man!). Mike, IMHO, I'd LLLOOOVVVEE for you to put Caught in a Web on (do
    you have it?).

    Congratulations John (and mate, presumeably)!

My friend gave his kid a steady diet of Rush and QR
(this was before IAW, so DT was unheard of by us then)
from the time he was born. At 2.5 years of age the kid
would stop in front of the stereo and stamp his feet to
the beat when Rush came on--- only Rush! Amazing. I haven't
seen them for two years... I'd really like to ask the
kid what he thinks of prog. music now!

    Zach

p.s. let the baby listen to "Silent Lucidity." This song
has special meaning for another friend of mine (isn't
it about DeGarmo discussing his kid's dreams with
them?) in relation to his small children. Almost
makes me wish I had kids (although I'd be afraid of
         what they'd look like !>\>

    Hello,
I know this thread has nothing to do with DT and has grown quite
    large, but...
One can hear the Dr. Jay Hamilton sound bite in the "Very Bad
Doctor" skit on an episode of the Kids In the Hall. I also heard it one
day as my wife was watching (not I, I say, NOT I) Days of Our Lives.

Sorry I have to mail this to the whole list but the reply command doesnt want
    to work.

    Duane,

The problem that you are having with the songs is because they are not
actaully there. The text pages are on a school account and the bigger files
(gifs, jpgs, sound file) are on my personal computer. Right now my computer
isnt at school running the server. It will be returning on August 17th (with
a redesigned page, it was a summer project that is coming along very slowly.)
I wish that there was a way to give you the files now but it would just take
    too long.

As for my system.....I have a test version of Win95 already running.
When Aug 24th rolls around I will finally have the real version. 20M is
    plenty for running Win95.

As for Lillian Axe, I dont think that we are going to hear much
more from them. Rumor has it that they broke up. (They could also be in the
studio recording but I havent heard anything about that since Jan.)

486sx sucks. Thats what i have and there is nothing that i
really could do with it. Cant upgrade or anything. This is the first PC tat
i bought and i really do not have enough money to get the one i would like
(especially with school). And this mail thing is really lagged over the
modem so please excuse any typeing errors because i am too lazy at this point
    to fix them.

About discussing my web page, please give me feedback. I am a perfec
tionist and am working on (with the new pages) fixing the problems that i
found myself. Hopefully it will fix majority of the many problems that i
found. There is one thing that i cant fix and that is te reliablilty of the
server. I have only found one that would work with win95 and really have not
been able to test the extent of what it can do. This will come when i move
back down to school. Well, I think this is wnough for now. Talk to you later.

                                            Ed

PS: Dont mind the Slick ..... thing at the end. That was set up about a
year and a half ago when i first started this account.

It has button options that allow you to forward or respond to someone's mail and it is definable as in to how you want it *quoted* (as in >'s or whatever else you want). You you can use drag and drop, cut and paste... As for how people respond in the same YJ, not everyone gets it in the digest format. Some people get it as individual messages.

FilDBaskt writes: > The 'Jam is about DT, not about christianity. > [stuff deleted] True, you're right. This is about DT but not just DT. There are many threads that pop up. If this was a moderated list, all we would be allowed to talk about is DT and DT only. I think it is great that we can run on tangents about different things. Stuff like production techniques, equipment for bootloegs, other prog bands, and little tidbits of other things that may be of interest. True, not everything is going to hit home with everybody. What I do is forward on from them and not read it in depth if I am not interested. The YJ has a lot of open-minded people, don't you think? Let's not censor their creativity. I have been told that if you want to generate a debate, talk about religion or politics. Some threads are inevitable. But just be glad that this list doesn't censor topics. (This is not a flame, Phil.) I have learned much from this list due to that freedom.

They couldn't come up with a good name so just picked the catalog number of the album (Here's a toughie: Does anyone know what the album was going to be called before they settled on 90125?)

and what other Yes > album's name is derived from the the first answer?

9012Live. And another trivia question: There's yet another Yes album that's related to this thread. What is it and how is it related?

    hehe...sorry... =)

Try your AWAKE liner notes. "A Mind Beside Itself" is what they titled Erotomania/Voices/The Silent Man, much like Extreme titled Rise & Shine/Am I Ever Gonna Change/Who Cares?, "Everything Under The Sun." (or side III - The Truth)

Incidentally, does anyone read anything I post if it's not about engineering? I know I put up the thing about "Creeping Death"'s origin, and the ACoS article (twice)...just wondering if anyone actually READ them.

*** Reply to note of 07/20/95 22:23 Hey Marc Respass.....e-mail me off this page so we can discuss the tongue-in-cheek nature of my "lower-case g" comment. It was just a rib at all of the religion talk going on here, not a flame toward those with faiths of any kind or strength. RELAX. Even, so, if people can go out of their way to show they ARE religious, who's right is it for them to say those who aren't can't express that viewpoint either. I'll stop on that note, because that wasn't even my intention.

Continuing the idea of lyric discussion, especially those of religious leanings: if we can't discuss the lyrics that mean the most to us , what's the point? I'd think religion and politics would be top priority for discussion among us in the thinking metal brigade. We shouldn't run and hide just because we want to avoid conflict. Isolationism usually leads to war.

90125 is the Atlantic catalog number for that album. _Tales from Topographic Oceans_: Topographic and Atlantic are both oceans.

(That was hard because TfTO is the only possibly decent Yes album I don't yet have--it is supposed to be an iffy album and I'm trying to find it for less than $16 for only 80 minutes of half decent music.)

    To Will in Calgary,

Thanks so much for giving me some stations to check out. You and a couple other Ytsejammers have been wonderful! Looks like I've got a weekend project of "checking out the dial"! BTW, I'm part Canadian and a few months ago we had a family reunion up in Ontario and some of my cousins could not fly out from Calgary due to ice on the runway (this was in May mind you). A Mind Beside Itself is Erotomania, Voices and The Silent Man. Those three together are called AMBI. Ever notice the lack of space between either one??

    Hello,

Well, now that you all are done thrashing me, (I think), all I want to say is that I stand by every word I wrote and maybe you should read what I said more carefully. Especially the last paragraph (ytsejam 895). And yes by the way, I am a newcomer so thrash me all the more because of that.

I too am a musician and obviously have to pick apart the music when I am trying to learn a new piece...but when I am listening for pleasure I don't like to consciously think about it too much, I prefer to take it in on an emotional level. As for lyrics, has anyone ever heard the writer explain what his song meant and it was totally different than what you thought??, I don't want to know.....I'd rather let the song speak to me and sort of make it my own personal message. In fact many groups themselves refuse to elaborate on their lyrics because they want the fans to interpret it in their own way. I certainly value talking to people about their own interpretations of songs. Who doesn't?.

I just expressed an opinion that I personally do not feel that OVER analysis of music has much value, obviously most of you do not agree with me.

Since I can see that there is no room for my opinion here (unless I agree with what everyone else says that is) I'll happily go back to the way it was before....being the only person I know who loves Dream Theater and loving it for what it means to me.....Later Jim

I heartily agree with the recommendation of "A Room With a View." It has been one of my favorite movies for years. Because most of the people on this list are intelligent, you will all appreciate the very dry Brittish humor. It's not overt at all, so be listening and watching carefully.

BTW - Because of my love for this film, hearing SDV for the first time was quite a wonderful experience.

    'jammers,

Since so many of you are very knowledgeable about bands and we have people from all over the place I have this question:

Does anyone know the whereabouts of a band called Thunder Circus? I saw them in Toronto about 4 years ago and they were really good. They even did an instrumental tune which was odd for most bar bands (considering most are cover bands). The guy had a wicked tone using a Les Paul and EMG active pickups. When I saw them they were on their way to England for a supposed cd recording. If anyone has heard of them please let me know what's up with them. I noticed a band called Psycho Circus at the music store and wondered if that was them.

Any help would be much appreciated.

To Greg: First engaged, then watching classic movies? Doh!

Well you guys have partially changed my oppinion on lyrics. I was wrong about the misinterpretting in part. You are right that it is a good thing when someone can relate to a song, whether they are right or not, and the band would probably like that. However I still stand by my belief that misinterpretation can be destructive. So I guess with DT lyrics are a good thing, because they aren't dangerous. But I think, and I know I will take a lot of flack for this(but I do ask that we leave it at what I have to say cause to many response to what I have to say will detract from the DT stuff), I think something needs to be done to curb lyrics that can be dangerous if misinterpretted(i.e. Metal that repeats things such as Die Die Die and gangsta rap, etc...)

I know this wasn't DT related but since we started talking about this issue I have added my .02 and I will not post anymore about this.

This has been posted before but I'll post again since no one really payed much attention to it, and because I think this is definetly worthy of the 'Jam, I'll post again.

On the DT board on AOL someone said that they met and spoke to Mike Portnoy after a show one night. They said that Mike told them that there is some sort of secret message in the sound clips on Awake. Now since all of you guys like to pick apart DT stuff, I think it would be pretty cool if we could all try and figure out what the message is, if it exists of course. I propose that we try and find out what movie all the clips come from and start from there. People who know what the clips are and what movies they are from post them here and I'll collect them all and keep track. Of course, if someone knows that this is just a rumor and that it isn't true, please post that also.

I don't know if this has previously been mentioned, but Marillion is playing the Paradise in Boston, MA on Aug. 4th (the night after DT plays Providence, RI). You can get tickets through Ticketmaster at (617) 931-2000, or from the Paradise Box Office at (617) 562-8800. The number for their concert line is (617) 562-8804 (although I really don't know why anyone would want that number . . . I just have to be thorough!!).

I will definitely be there, along with a few other ytsejammers.

If you are thinking about going to either the Providence DT show or the Boston Marillion show, please email me!!

    Later, 'jammers!

Not to long ago, I posted a message re: meeting women of the former soviet union through romance ads.

In August, Olga will travel to Moscow from her home in Kiev, Ukraine. In Moscow, Olga will have a much easier and cost efficient means to place your personal romance ad throughout Russia.

Last week I received the following from Olga:

"I have already sent your ad to the papers in such towns: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir, Kazan. At nearest future I will send your ad to the paper in some more 12 towns of Russia, where papers are published. Some times (in winter, spring & now) I placed your ad in other papers, but they are not most popular paper in Moscow and some large cities of Russia. Besides, I am continuing to place your ad in papers of Ukraine. I promise to place your ad in some other papers when I will come to Moscow in August. I am glad that you have received fairly many letters from Russian & Ukrainian girls and I think you will received some more ones and will find your ideal in my country soon. I thank you very much ones more for your kindness & your help. My best wishes,

    Olga"

This isn't a scam - call it panhandling if you want. . . I sent her $40 or $50 and I've received over 45 responses. Unlike placing romance ads in the U.S., women from the former USSR respond. Although one would guess the are doing so in the hopes of American citizenship, I haven't found it so.

Olga lives in Kiev, Ukraine (population 3 million) and will travel to Moscow in August to visit her father. If you were to send a letter this week, she would receive it in time. The population of Moscow is 10 million -- (3 times the size of Los Angeles.)

Feel free to send a letter and ask her your questions. She will be happy to respond.

    Olga's address:

Ukraine Kiev 253121 Dekabristov Street 5 - 178 Olga Kozmina

I am posting anonymously because of the flames and volume of inquiries that would result otherwise. I think those who are truely interested will take the time to write. _____________________________________________________________________________ To: probable flamer Subject: polite note

Although Olga has never seen a newsgroup nor heard of "net-etiquette," she believes that offering lonely singles the possibility of romance exceeds the cost of angering those who feel the net shouldn't be used in this fashion. IHA (I humbly ask) that you not flame the postmaster of this site.

    peace. . .

The port number used by most IRC servers is 6667. This seems to also be the one for #ytsejam. They say on logon at irc.colorado.edu that if you have trouble with port 6667, to try ports 6665 or 6666. Good luck. I'm using a program called IRCLE for Mac, and I seem to log on correctly, except no one else seems to be on line when I'm there (maybe because its midday, PDT).

You should be able to Telnet irc.colorado.edu at port 6667, although I had some trouble with the site by this method.

    See ya on the JAM.

It seems to me that for a prog. rock band the player that should be the most talented would be the singer. Sure, in most cases the drummer is a more important member, but to give a good basic beat is not that hard. Most of my friends could keep a band together. However, the singer stands out the most. After him/her, comes the guitarist. A good drummer will be able to play impressive parts without losing the beat, but to give a basic beat is not to hard. In the awkward times of Rush and Dream Theater (i.e 7/8, 4/4+5/4, etc.), it can become difficult.
