Analysis and comparison doesnt's subtract from how one
appreciates music. The only purpose it can serve is to deepen
your understanding and respect for the music. If I say that I
like John Petrucci better than Mike Portnoy, it doesn't say
much. But if I say that I like Petrucci better because I find his
talent is more outstanding and rare in the musical field,
whereas if I want to hear drums, all I have to do is listen to
Peart, who I would say is quite a bit more talented, then that
will make a Portnoy-appreciater think about why he/she likes
Michael Portnoy, in order to defend him. If I say that 'Eve' has
polly rhythm all over it, mainly in the drums and 'piano' sound,
which is a very basic observation, then the next time the
reader listens to 'Eve', he/she might notice the polly rhythm
and go 'wow! I never noticed that. It sounds really cool!' And
better yet, he/she might try to learn the piece, and somehow,
the knowledge of the polly rhythm would help them to learn
the piece. They might say "wow! so that's what he's doing
there!' Sometimes it is hard to duplicate a sound until you
know beforehand what it is that they are playing, and maybe
even why they are playing it. Some pieces, like WfS are
not easy, because so many things are happening at the same
time in one instrument, because all the lines are subtly twined
together. I can't play it yet, but if somebody told me what he
was doing in the harmonies underneath the principal harmony
and melody, then that would probably enable me to play it. That
in itself would make the Ytsejam worthwhile to pay attention
    to.

As for flames, there are two kinds. There is the flame that
someone gives off because they have been offended, or because
someone has been rude or not listening. This is usually in
response to a flame. The other kind is where someone just
feels the need to be heard or to enforce their opinion on another
person. I won't make judgements on any specific person, but I
would say that unless you are defending something, or
unveiling something about someone, don't flame. Even under
those circumstances, there are more subtle ways to go about it.
Impassioned flames are only for use under extremes
circumstances, of which we've seen only a couple.

As for lyrics, I think that Dream Theater's are tops. In other
bands, I really don't care much how good they are, but in a band
that I listen to all the time (DT, Rush, PF, etc.), I would be very,
very, very distressed if the lyrics started to suck.

Lastly, I noticed that all of my friends that like Rush, really
like Dream Theater. But not all of my friends that like Dream
Theater like Rush. Isn't that wierd? All of my Dream Theater-
liking friends do like Pink Floyd, though.

CYGNUS CD PROJECT UPDATE / SUBCONSCIOUS CONCLUSION
    ACOUSTIC DREAMS UPDATE
    current to 7/19/95

This is an update on the status of orders and such things on the
Rush "Cygnus" CD... made available exclusively to the members of the Ytsejam
    list before anybody else. :)

EVEN QUICKER UPDATE: I am in a position to produce it immediately upon the
receipt of my supplies order. Thanks guys! I'm going to spend the interim
    getting Acoustic Dreams together.

EXPECTED DELIVERY DATE: Yes, I was given one. I will have all I need to begin
CD shipments by 7/30/95, I am assured by my supplier. Here's hoping! They
said they're trying to get it to me by the _beginning_ of next week (7/24)
but gave me the 7/30 estimate to be on the safe side.

Here's the no-wait address and cost. Read on for further info on the CD.

$23 check, money order, or cashier's check/traveler's cheque to:
            Michael Bahr
            3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
            Chandler, AZ 85224
PLEASE SPECIFY that it's Cygnus you want. I do a lot of mailing and may not
realize what it is that's being purchased.

    QUICKIE UPDATE:
Well, we're still just waiting on delivery, that's all... everything else is
done. I have mailing packets, stamped and addressed to the first 60 or so
orders, sitting open like baby sparrows, waiting to be fed a CD and sent. :)

ACOUSTIC DREAMS: Also known as Dream Theater Unplugged. I have begun work on
this already and will begin taking orders for it shortly, possibly when the
shipments of Cygnus are in (why have two pre-order things going at once...)
or earlier if you all want. More info on this CD in a moment.

SUBCONSCIOUS: The CDs are finally _gone_. Every copy has been sold. I've even
sold my own personal extra copies. I can't believe this was so popular!
Will Subconscious ever be made again? Unless some Italian company copies it,
I am sorry to say it will not. One of the explicit conditions I set forth
when I made the disc was that it would be very special and limited, and I
would be breaking my confidence with the people who have bought it under the
understanding it would be a unique, rare release. I swear I don't mean to make
people miss out... but a promise is a promise. Would people trust me when I
say "get it now" if they could get it a year later? I calculate not. :)

THANKS EVERYONE for being a part of this! You all RULE! :)

DISCLAIMER: Cygnus falls into a grey area under law as an uncopyrighted
recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production
occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA,
it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such.
This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting
    nothing for this.

Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will
want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know
I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not
think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit
of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

    1. What the hell is Cygnus?
    2. When can I order and how?
    3. For that matter, what the hell is Acoustic Dreams?
    4. Orders received.
    =============================================================================

    1. What the hell is Cygnus?

Hi all, I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special edition CDs. Earlier
this year, I made available a special, _very_ limited edition Dream Theater
CD called Subconscious. I didn't know if the project would work at all,
since I had to use my own money to finance the project, and had to be very
close on costs to even make it a non-loss financially. But you responded,
    Ytsejammers!

The CD sold, sold, and sold some more. In fact, the entire limited
edition print of 500 copies, each hand-numbered and signed in gold by myself,
sold out entirely to you, the most devoted fans of Dream Theater on earth.

And I do mean _Earth_! I got orders from the USA, Canada, Mexico,
Japan, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark,
the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Israel, Singapore,
Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece, and a few more countries I am sure
I have forgotten to mention. Truly, the WORLD made Subconscious a success for
me and for the Jam, so I'm going to hope that Cygnus will be another one! My
heart goes out to all of you in every country of the world for joining in!

What I did was work with a pressing plant using rental equipment and
some of my own as well, and an exhausting three months of preparation,
packaging, and mailing, not to mention production of the CD, and a million
other things, and made it a reality. I was relieved beyond words when I read
the positive comments people had for it online.

Cygnus is the project I will do to fill the gap between Spring 1995's
Subconscious and Autumn 1995's WHEN DREAM AND JAMES UNITE. Cygnus will be a
recording from an ultra-rare Rush show, the single best sounding Rush show in
existence, from the mystical Hemispheres tour of 1978-79. It is an unlimited
print, but there will likely not be more than 1000 ever made.

Here's the information on the show.

    Title: Rush "Cygnus"
Source: True soundboard reel-to-reel, original length 81 min
    Running time: 73 min
Venue: Convention Center Arena (TCC Arena)
    Location: Tucson, Arizona
    Date: November 20, 1978
Generation: Transferred to 48kHz DAT from a 2nd gen analog.
Quality: Beyond comparison. Higher than "Oakland '92" and "Pinkpop".

    Setlist:
            Anthem
            A Passage to Bangkok
            By-Tor and the Snow Dog
                    I. At the Tobes of Hades
                    II. Across the Styx
                    III. Of The Battle
            Xanadu
            Something for Nothing
            The Trees
Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage
            Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres
                    I. Prelude
                    II. Apollo
                    III. Dionysus
                    IV. Armageddon
                    V. Cygnus
                    VI. The Sphere
            Circumstances
            A Farewell to Kings

Note that La Villa Strangiato had to be cut or else I couldn't fit
the Cygnus saga on the CD! I'm sorry about that, I hope it won't kill the
experience for anybody. They had some sound problems during that song
anyhow, so in a way, maybe you _don't_ want to hear it.

Also on the original tape was a cut-off version of the beginning of 2112,
the Overture and then half of the Temples section. In order to make Cygnus
fit onto a single CD, I cut those seven minutes out of the DAT. Everyone
has a live 2112 on ATWAS album, anyway.

Now that I sort of "have the hang of it" where CDs are concerned, I
have put together some colorful art for the CD and cover. For those who didn't
get one, Subconscious had a gold-on-black motif, much like the Terminator-2
and Star Wars laserdisc box-sets. It was dignified, and direct. And now, for
Cygnus, I want to really make people say "wow!" The cover is pretty wicked
looking, I'll try and post a copy.

    2. Where can I order and how?

Okay, here's the deal. Anyone remember how long it took my blanks
shipment to get to me when I did Subconscious? Twenty-nine days, it did. And
I placed the order for Cygnus blanks a few weeks ago. Used a faster supplier.
Now, this time, I originally had planned not to even ANNOUNCE Cygnus until
I had the CDs in hand. However, so many of you are leaving for the summer
and/or want early copies like last time, that I will go ahead and do a pre-
    order deal again.

Why, you may ask, should I send the money, if I won't get the CD for
            a while, though?

Well, you don't have to. But you can. I strongly urge you to consider
            it. Here's why.

Here's how it works. I don't want anyone feeling uncomfortable sending
me a payment when in all truth, your CD might take a month to get to you. So
I will divulge as much information as I can to make it a sound decision on
your part. For those who wish to wait, there will be NO penalty; simply order
when I get the CDs in shipment. For those who order early, in an effort to
reward their confidence in my project and in gratitude for them getting the
ball rolling early, I will be shipping CDs out in the order they were
received... thus, you'll get it sooner. Furthermore, this time I'm going to
run a little contest. A random 25 people in the first 300 orders (this will
be done with a computer randomizer) will get a free copy of a special video
montage, just as an added bonus and a thank-you for being a part of this. I
think I might make two or three different montages and throw them in at
random into the sets... one Rush, one Dream Theater, one Live, one Queensryche
and maybe one of all sorts of progressive bands. Or more! :)

            How to order!!!

Remember when Subconscious came out, and I said certain costs were
permanent, and had gone into the production cost? I didn't lie... Cygnus will
be CHEAPER than Subconscious was. The price will be $23. For anyone in Canada
ordering, add only $1 for postage. For anyone outside North America, add $2
for postage (so it would be the same price as Sub) and that will take care of
it. There's a lot of bean-counting that I do to come up with those numbers,
so trust me, it's what it amounts to. Plus, you can order as MANY Cygnus discs
as you want, because you on the Jam are getting a shot at it before I offer
it anywhere else. Also, it's still $25 for NON-Ytsejammers. Check out my posts
to alt.music.rush and a.m.dt, you'll find it's true. Naturally, if you have
friends who want a copy of Cygnus, they can get it at the $23 price, same as
    you Jammers.

Please use a money order if you can. The reason is simple: it's safe!
I know you paid and you know I have it (it's traceable). And you know if you
don't get a CD or a refund, I'll go to jail.

For international orders, I will indeed accept cash if you wish. I
urge you to be careful, because every order for Subconscious that contained
cash made it safely to me, but that might not always be the case. I don't
want anybody to lose their money. For orders of 2 or more Cygnus discs,
a travellers cheque or international money order is economical to use. If
you decide to use cash, please wrap it tight in a thick envelope and try to
hide it, so that nobody will steal it.

Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery. It will actually be closer to
4 or 4 and a half weeks, but in order to be safe, I'm giving you the extreme
possibility. Understand that, as with Subconscious, I'll be making every
effort to get them sent fast and soon. And now, I know a few things I can be
doing to get them done faster than I did with Sub... like pre-making the
    mailing lists, supplies, process, etc.

            Here's what to do.

Send your payment, along with your Name, Address to ship it to, Internet
email address (in case I need to contact you), how MANY CDs you want, and,
optionally, your phone number. I say optionally, because I know some of you
    want to keep them unlisted.

    Send all this to:
                            Michael Bahr
                            3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
                            Chandler, AZ 85224 (USA)

If you wish to speak to me for any reason, including questions, comments,
suggestions, or you just want to chat with another dedicated fan of Rush and
Dream Theater, you are very welcome to call me at 1-602-777-0501. I am
usually home between 11am and 9pm Mountain Standard Time. Please use this
phone number with proper discretion, however, as I will be very confused if
you call me at 3:00 in the morning.

    3. What the hell is Acoustic Dreams?

Well, this is the next CD I'm doing, also known as Dream Theater
Unplugged. We were given a VERY high-quality soundboard tape of DT's recent
Unplugged performance in Europe, and it can only be fully expressed in the
form of a CD. Trust me. :)

When can you order AD? Very soon, probably as soon as I get the
materials in for Cygnus, so I can have two concurrent releases. I'm working
on acquiring materials for it already. This will make me nearly broke this
summer, but I've pre-paid my rent, and I can live without food for awhile. :)
(yes, I'm exaggerating, but not by much. Time to run the first ever Ytsejam
    Canned Food Drive! ha!)

Here's the tentative tracklisting from Acoustic Dreams...

            1. Another Day (laid-back version)
            2. Lifting Shadows off a Dream (IMHO, far better than the album version)
            3. Wait For Sleep (acoustic GUITAR on this one, no piano!)
            4. The Silent Man
            5. Lie (boogie version) - this is really a trip to hear
            6. Tears (Rush cover, done acoustically, very beautiful)
            7. O Holy Night

The following are very likely to be added:
            1. Perfect Strangers (with Bruce Dickinson on vocals)
            2. Caught in a Web (from an fm show, live jam)
            3. A Change of Season (with C.Cintron on vocals)

The following _will_ be added if I can get copies of them:
            1. Voices acoustic (from a European radio show)
            2. 6:00 acoustic (same)
            3. Under a Glass Moon acoustic (same)

I'm looking for any other acoustic DT material you all might have...
remember, leave out the acoustic To Live Forever since that was on the
    Subconscious CD.

    4. Orders received.

This time, I'm in the thick of starting the AD project, and Cygnus
is coming along just dandy as well... and I will be able to confirm that an
order was received if you email me about it. I won't be posting a long list
to the Jam because of complaints I received about the Sub listing.

For the most part, all orders usually get through. If you want to
confirm yours PERSONALLY, feel free to do so, via email or voice.

Well that about wraps it up for this update of the CYGNUS CD project.
Everyone be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!

After listening to AWAKE for 400-500 times I have to say that the guys and
EAST WEST should really consider releasing Innocence Faded as a single. With
no execptions, everyone that I have played it for loves it...and after
hearing the rest of the album, feels that it would be a great single. James'
singing is great, drums are great, and the outro should KILL most hard rock
    fans.

Also...last night I was talking to the evening DJ for KUFO here in
    Portland...he said that
East West needs to PROMOTE the band more. He felt that the label was doing
    next to
nothing to get them airtime. Their Program Director will only let him play
    PMU...nothing from Awake.

So...lets get them a new sound engineer for live shows and someone at East
    West
with a little more dedication to the best band in the world.
Seriously...Hairball..any suggestions for getting a little more out of East
    West....?

actually, i believe it's just a typical "hospital sound" which can be found
on a cd-rom. lot's of movies, tv-shows use the same sound effects.
lots of sounds you hear on tv (guns going off, crashes, etc.) can also be
found on these cd-roms. that's what i've heard anyways.
can someone correct me? this has probably been discussed to death on the
    SiD digest.

First off I would like to comment on the lyric/music thing. I think they are
both equally important. Would 'Metropolis' be the same if the main lyrical
content was about sex with your relatives and getting plastered on weekends?
Then again, would the lyrics in 'Under a Glass Moon' move you if they were
done over a chord and half punk theme? See? Why don't you just sit back and
enjoy the music? Sure, analyzie the meaning of the lyrics, take apart the
song structure, its all part of listening to a great band like DT. Why
trouble yourselves with all this internal conflict?
Secondly, I think Charlie D. was (is) a great singer! The songs off
WDADU were excellent. Listen to 'Afterlife' or 'Status Seeker' He's a great
vocalist! James is excellent as well.
Also, I wanted to know if any one knows if there is sheet music in print
for WDADU. I have the song books for I&W and Awake, and would someone please
tell me how to get on the IRC thing?!?!?! Thanks again....

    Hi everyone,

Well, I guess the cat is sort of out of the bag now, since several people
already know about this, so I might as well post the good news publicly.

Kev's coming to Los Angeles this summer to work on some new material with
Fates Warning's drummer, Mark Zonder. :)

Moore <G> details will be forthcoming as they become available, of course.

Yes, there is tab to the ytsejam at either the netcom ftp site or the
nevada archive. I've also got it. It's got a lot of those little
pseudo-trem picked parts in it like Malmsteen's "Far Beyond the Sun."
It's a good workout playing the song.

Ever notice how calm Petrucci looks when he pulls stuff off live. Whew.
For example, the run in the solo for Another Day (great stuff). He just
seems to fly up the neck. That's pretty cool. I can play stuff that fast
but I've really got to dig in and grimace and bend over. It's sort of
    like bein' on the can.

Actually, this is a commonly used Hollywood soundbite used in
hospital scenes. I've heard it in about three movies over the
years. The last one I heard it in was a really cheesy horror
movie starring Madchen Amick (sp?) (the reason I rented the
movie!) about a posessed Aztec burial cloth. When my friend
and I heard this we jumped out of our seats and yelled:
    "QUEENSRYCHE!"

    > Just an observation,
    >
    > Jarrod Ramsey-Lewis

And I still have had no confirmation about the SDV soundbite
    ("It's 180 degrees...but it's a _dry_ heat.") being from the
movie _Biloxi Blues_. It's not from the Conan O'Brien show.
I watch this about every night and I know what their voices
sound like. Maybye I'll rent BB one of these nights when I
feel like wasting money to confirm this (of course, I've been
saying this for almost a year now).

When it comes down to the lyrics thing (I hope I'm not beating a
dead horse here), the lyrics are extremely important for me. I totally
find the literary/Biblical allusions/references in the lyrics of DT and
other band's songs really intriguing. It often challenges me to look
things up when I don't understand what the band may be talking about,
and I actually learn stuff from such bands. It was Iron Maiden's song
"Rime of the Ancient Mariner" that got me into the band not because of
the music (which was/is excellent), but because I was somewhat familiar
with the well-known epic poem. It was because of this song that I
ended up reading my now favourite poem. This made me notice all of
such references in their songs, and really increased my interest and
appreciation of literature in general (I also read Dune because of "To
Tame a Land"). As far as relating to lyrics, oftentimes, a band will
write lyrics with the intention of allowing the listener to interpret
them in their own way and apply the lyrics to their own individual
situation. Now, said band may have certain specific things in mind
when writing a particular song, but they MAY intentionally leave the
lyrics open for interpretation. If lyrics make you think, whoever
wrote them did their job. Recently, an old friend of mine committed
suicide, and Megadeth's song "A Toute le Monde (s.p.?)" really helped
me relate. I had no idea it was originally intended to be an
anti-suicide song, but I did find out later on that it was. This just
goes to show that not everybody that says they relate to song lyrics
misinterprets them. I am currently studying some English in college,
so such lyrics have helped me not only increase my interest, but have
also helped in various research I have done for my classes. It is so
refreshing to see a band out there that shows some shred of
intelligence. Just for the record, I am also a musician, so the music
is equally important to me. I can't stand crappy music and crappy
lyrics (i.e. Green Day - sorry for all the GD fans out there, but this
is how I see it). Anyway, I just thought I'd give my take on the
    topic. God bless.

Subject: Relating to lyrics (LONG rant, sorry)
    Message-ID: <9507200700.AA175706@lamar.ColoState.EDU>

    Greetings and salutations people,
I just wanted to say that I disagree with Phil when he writes
that when people say that they relate to the lyrics they are most likely
misinterpreting the lyrics and therefore are not really relating, but
rather, interpolating the meaning of the lyrics. (If I've misinterpreted
your statements please feel free to mention it to me in a freindly
manner.) I feel that there are certainly instances where people can and
    do relate to lyrics.
Since Metallica was mentioned in his message, I shall use them as
my initial example. (BTW, I was not offended by your Creeping Death
complaint since I realized what it was about when I picked up the
original Garage Days Revisited ep [w/Am I Evil & Blitzkrieg].) Not to
get off on a rant here, but when a band writes a lyric that is obviously
the telling of a story, i.e., Trapped Under Ice or Ride the Lightning,
people who have experienced the same kind of things can certainly relate to
those messages. (We'll ingnore for the moment that most people who "ride
the lightning" can not relate to much other than Pam no-stick spray.
Let's assume it is someone AWAITING execution.) Of course, lyrics aren't
    always so straight forward.
Eddie Vedder refused to discuss the meaning of the lyrics to Jeremy
in an interview (on eMmTyV) because so many people had experienced
relations to the lyrics that he did not want to rob them of. He understood
that his lyrics (At least when he was still writing good albums [just my
opinion]) are his intellectual property, but everyone's emotional experience.
The idea is that everyone brings to art their own experiences and
outlooks. Certainly, I can relate to the Mirror because I've had a
particularly strong experience involving betrayal by a very close
friend. I'm not thinking about the exact same experience that inspired
Mike Portnoy to write the song. I've brought my own experiences to the
table. I don't think that's an injustice to the lyricist (not to be
confused with other types of cyst :> ) that I've done this. I think it is
just what the songwriter wants. Who wants to write a song that no one in
the world will ever relate to (and as a result be moved by)? What would
be the purpose of writing songs, poetry, books, etc... if you don't want
people to have strong emotions while listening, reading, and so on?
I agree that I have no idea EXACTLY what MP means when he writes
it's plagued me from coast to coast / Racing the clock to pleaase
everyone / all but the one who matters the most (perhaps touring to
please us all and neglecting himself), but I relate to the lines about
betrayal and maybe understand why my (former) best friend did what he did
    a little better.
Then again, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. Sorry if
this seemed harsh. I'm not trying to be, but apparently, my friends
think I can come off that way sometimes.
    Sorry about the length.
    Happy happy joy joy feelings,

    hi everyone.

i am in need of DAT blanks for taping future shows (especially since i
will try to attend/tape every echolyn show within 1000 miles of me) :)
and i have an offer for everyone.

i have 8 dream theater shows on DAT. 5 i taped myself, one is the 6/9/95
new jersey show with the new ACOS, and the other two are AMAZING FM shows.
i also have 14 queensryche '95 shows on DAT. 7 of those i taped myself.
also, i filmed 6 of the ryche shows.

i am making all these available to everyone on the list, and anyone else,
    for DAT blanks.

    here is the deal:

    1 video: 1 DAT blank
1 DAT clone: 2 DAT blanks
1 Analog 1st gen dub of a DAT: 1 DAT blank

    +shipping cost.
i pay for the tapes i record on.

i am just doing this to let everyone have these shows that has nothing
that i want in trade, and because i desperately need DAT blanks.

any brand of DAT blank is ok, except for TDK DDS (data grade) tapes.

preferable length is 120 minute (60meter) or 180 minute (90 meter) but
90 minute is ok, but add 1 tape for every 3 90's.

email me for more details and a list of the shows available. or,
check my web page for a listing of my DATs with setlists and everything.

    thanks.
