Greetings Earthlings, it's Babs (sorry couldn't resist - Marvin the Martian
is my favorite Looney Tunes character). I need to direct this post to
a person who emailed me before the convention. His name was M. McIntosh.
At first I wasn't sure if this was a legit y'jammer or if it was Mike P
playing some kind of joke on me. If you are truly with us M. McIntosh, please
email me direct because I need to double-check your address before mailing
    something out to you.

    Thank you.

    Just FYI --

The strand is NOT like the Orpheum in Boston ... at least not anymore.
Sure, it's a "theater" -- however, the place has been pretty much gutted,
and converted to a full blown nightclub.

There is seating in the balcony, but the General Public are not allowed
up there -- it's for lighting people and club staff only. The main floor
of the hall has had ALL of the seats ripped out of it, so the shows there
are General Admission and standing room only!

Don't expect great sound -- I saw DT there for their very first show of
the "Awake" world tour, and the sound was *very* loud and not very clear.
At least the visuals were good -- the stage is large enough to accommodate
    DT's stage and lighting rig.

    Happy rails, ....

I was gonna try to stay out of this "who's the most important person in the
band" until Phil (FilDBaskt@aol.com) attacked my instrument ;).

    > Being a drummer I can honestly say

No you can't. You're biased. As am I. Watch.

Someone recently said that he thinks it's the whole band. Not any one
person - at least as far as prog goes. Like VH isn't a progressive band -
it's Eddie Van Halen's band. If Eddie split, Alex would still be there so
it could still be Van Halen but they'd be playing clubs real soon. Think of
Yes. They went from Bill Bruford (!!!) to Alan White (?). I don't remember
Alan ever doing anything terribly impressive. Chris Squire said it was like
going from Mr. Technique to Mr. Feel. Anyway, Yes is a prog band and so
they stayed even with other personell changes.

    > Keyboardist and Singer: These guys are really common

Where the HELL do you live?? If I wanted to start a band and started
looking for a singer, I'd have a hard time finding anyone good. Same with a
keyboardist. A good singer is hard to come by - esp. one that knows
anything about music as opposed to posing.

    > Bassist: No offense to bassists out there, but bass is
    > almost always a background instrument which stands out the
    > least in nearly any kind of music, especially prog

Well, maybe to the first part, but prog is where the bass gets to shine.
I'm thinking of Rush (best bassist so many times he can't win anymore), Yes
(Squire is a major influence on many players), DT. Prog music is where the
bassist isn't stuck peddling the root. He can do more. A good bassist is
    important to a prog band.

I really think it's the whole band. DT could replace their keyboardist (oh
yeah, they did) with someone different, but just as good (I'm hoping
anyway) and still go on. The point is that they need someone who's really
good. The whole band has to be good players and work together.

Does anyone know about this club?
DT is playing there on friday, and I want to go. I checked out their web site
and it said free entry 21 and over, or $5 for 19 or 20 year old women. Being
a 20 year old guy, I'm a little miffed. Does anyone know if the $5 cover
applies to guys as well? I live in the middle of Nassau county, and it would
be a shame to drive all the way to Hampton Bays and not be allowed in.
     Thanks.

    Hi everybody,

I'm new here on the list so I better introduce myself.
My name is Jan Melander, I'm 31 years old working as a programmer and
playing guitar semi-pro with a band called Spaceman SPIFF in Gothenburg,
    Sweden.
Just become DAD for the first time a month a go and gave my daughter a
pre-birth present in form of a wonderful Dream Theater consert in Malmoe
    this spring.

I'd like to make a comment on the discussion about the 'most important'
    band member.
Let's turn this question around and ask who is the WORST?

The answer is: the one who tries to play above his/hers abilities!
When It comes down to bussiness, playing in a band is about to lock
together with Your band mates and deliver a great song.

To get there is to know Your limitations and Your strength as a band and
arrange the music there after, the drummer does not need to be as
pyrotecnical as Mike P to put up a good grove but if he can, it might be
    the cream on the cake.

One of the most important talent You got to have as a musician is Taste,
knowing when to stretch out and to know when to shut up, do the right thing
    for the song.

To have said all this a decent band can still get good response by having a
great singer since most people in this world can't tell the difference
between the bass player and the guitar player and for them are 80% of their
musical experience based on the vocals.

By the way, does anyone know were to get DT bootlegs in Sweden?

    Cheers,

Somehow, I get the feeling that it doesn't apply to guys. I'll barely be
able to get my girlfriend in, she just turned 19 (I'm 22).

btw, I called the club's hotline (516)728-4121. NO mention of echolyn,
whatsoever. I still might go anyway. If anyone else is heading out there,

Hate to disagree with you here - but the reason why the bass is seldom
heard is solely the responsiblity of the production team. DT's albums are
like VH's in the respect of having really high guitar and/or key levels but
having the bass backed way down in the mix. If you listen to Seventies
prog music, the bass sometimes even lead the song (cf. Yes - Roundabout.
That song revolutionized bass tones and the song would sound terrible with
    the bass turned down, IMHO).
I think JM is DT's best kept secret. That guy is amazing! I would really
like to hear more of him in future recordings.
My definition of prog music in general is not just about wierd time sigs
and clipped phrasing, it's the general approach to the music. The
production, the lyrics, the presentation of the material, all aspects
can (and should be) be manipulated to produce something wonderful.

IMHO - DT has been compromised by using "standardized" production
techniques and as a result the sound has become more "accessable" and
easier to listen to. They will sell a lot more records, but I feel that
they are losing their progressiveness a little. If the band took a turn
away from the commercial side of things - I know I would still listen to
them and I'm sure most of you would too. Sure we'd have a massive flame
war about what happened but don't tell me that hasn't happened before.

Enough rambling - ON WITH THE JAM!!

It's Tears and Silent Man and they must be from a radio broadcast and not
the Ronnie Scott's gig. Nice clear sound on those two.

It must be from the Japan Pay=Per=View. The date is 1/24/95 (which is the
same date as the Wake Up boot). Sound is much better than the average
boot, but LaBrie's voice has seen better nights.

One thing I really dig is on 'Another Day'. Right after "surrender to the
secret", Mike pauses a second or two before coming in and John holds that
one huge note a bit longer than usual. Have they done this at other shows?

    Hi,

I've read a lot about this good/sux bassist part.
In my opinion, I think the ideal band/situation is where everyone is
a outstanding or good player (not mediocre) and they have good
    chemistry... for example... DT!!

I believe that a good Bassist is important. Having been brought up in
a classical music background, I know how important each part of the
music and score is to the whole song or piece. Can you imagine Bach
without the bass counterpoint?? Ouch. Each part complements the other
    parts.

I feel the same way about prog rock. John M DOES play counterpoint to
the guitar sometimes. It takes talent to play that way. DT wouldn't
be the same without John (or a good bass player, for that matter).

I personally dig good bass players, both technically and groovily
(?). As a guitarist, I find bassists very important.

I know that John hasn't had much coverage, but I hope he'll get known
more. Of course guitarists get more publicity than bassists, but
    c'est la vie!!

Anyways, less than 24 h to the QR concert!!

I saw someone on the Jam paid $45 for 1 majesty demo cd? That's insane.
There is no need to pay those kinds of prices for single cd's.....

Anyways, Since I've been backlogged with orders for these cd's i've
gotten 60 of them to sell the first serious customers that want them.
    They are:

DT: 1986 MAJESTY DEMOS. Original Demo featuring Chris Collins/Vox.

DT: INSTRU-mental I . The 1987 Recordings. Featuring WDAUD demos, plus
unreleased material (demo) and solo pieces from petrucci & portnoy.

DT: INSTRU-mental II. *NEW* Featuring more rare instrumental tracks including
the Rush cover YYZ, and the original demo for A Change of Seasons, and
        much much more!

DT: Rising Power featuring Mike Portnoy: His band before DT. 1st time on CD.
          Great DT novelty item!

For more detailed information including prices and ordering information, please
    send email to:

    lodge_tim@ccsu.ctstateu.edu

BTW, I don't have sixty of each title, but about 15-25 of each.
Order now as quantities are definately limited, and may not be offered
online after this next ordering period.

    Hey Mike,
real quick, IMHO, I'd rather hear unplugged versions of 6:00 and Under
A Glass Moon rather than acoustic ACOS (that is, of course, if you have
those two songs acoustic). Just my $.02.

John plays his acoustic guitar (the nice orange one) at "Silent Man",
"Another Day" (where he doubles kevin's piano line).

The two tracks are "Tears" and TSM. These are listed as "bonus
tracks" on the sleeve, which I think is funny since this is a
    bootleg !>\>

Definitely! The two best things on it are Mike's solo (this
gets better every tour!) and "Another Crack in the Mirror"
    (instrumental intro to "The Mirror").

And this brings up another subject (which anyone who's been
cruising a.r.m.p. with recognize), and this is Derek's writing
ability. The intro to TM, I think, is a good representation of
Derek's material (unless I'm wrong and someone else wrote it?).
I think this song sounds great. He has a definite style that
is different from Moore's but good all the same. I he can
write keyboard bits like this for the next album, I *won't*
    be dissapointed.

I believe it's from a Japanese radio braodcast. I think it sounds
    good.

I've done enough of that! (mostly on Rush boots)

btw, does anyone know of any *good* boots from the
current QR tour that I should be looking for?

I got this from a document on IRC: Hope it can be helpful to someone:

    (4) Where can I get source for an IRC client?

You can anonymous ftp to any of the following sites (use the
one closest to you): *** If you don't know what anonymous ftp is, ask
your local systems people to show you ***

    UNIX client-> cs.bu.edu /irc/clients
                  ftp.acsu.buffalo.edu /pub/irc
                  ftp.funet.fi /pub/unix/irc
                  coombs.anu.edu.au /pub/irc
                  ftp.informatik.tu-muenchen.de /pub/comp/networking/irc/clients
                  slopoke.mlb.semi.harris.com /pub/irc
there is also a client avaliable with the server code.
    EMACS elisp-> cs.bu.edu /irc/clients/elisp
                  ftp.funet.fi /pub/unix/irc/Emacs
                  ftp.informatik.tu-muenchen.de /pub/comp/networking/irc/clients
                  slopoke.mlb.semi.harris.com /pub/irc/emacs
                  lehtori.cc.tut.fi /pub/irchat
    X11 client-> catless.ncl.ac.uk /pub
                  harbor.ecn.purdue.edu /pub/tcl/code
    VMS -> cs.bu.edu /irc/clients/vms
                  coombs.anu.edu.au /pub/irc/vms
                  ftp.funet.fi /pub/unix/irc/vms
                  ftp.informatik.tu-muenchen.de /pub/net/irc
    REXX client for VM-> cs.bu.edu /irc/clients/rxirc
                            ftp.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de /pub/irc/rxirc
                            ftp.informatik.tu-muenchen.de /pub/net/irc/VM
                            coombs.anu.edu.au /pub/irc/rxirc
                            ftp.funet.fi /pub/unix/irc/rxirc
    MSDOS-> cs.bu.edu /irc/clients/msdos
                    ftp.funet.fi /pub/unix/irc/msdos
    Macintosh-> cs.bu.edu /irc/clients/macintosh
                    sumex-aim.stanford.edu /info-mac/comm
                    ftp.funet.fi /pub/unix/irc/mac
                    ftp.ira.uka.de /pub/systems/mac

    (15) Where can I learn more?

The best, basic, IRC user's manual is the IRC Primer,
available in plain text, PostScript, and LaTeX from
cs-ftp.bu.edu:/irc/support ... Another good place to start might be
downloading the IRC tutorials. They're avaliable via anonymous ftp
    from cs-ftp.bu.edu in /irc/support/old*

I got this in a Mac archive called 'IRC_Mac_Clients.sea' from Sumex/Info-Mac
It has a number of Mac IRC programs and helpful documents (general, not
    Mac-limited).
