I guess that there is a good chance that I'd love "Images and Words",
nevertheless an interesting result - I already have 7 of the first 14
titles recommended. Has anyone hit a title with a bigger weighting
or has the site been visited by a huge number of Dream Theatre
    fans recently?

It also recommended ARCADE. Who are they? Are they worth
    investigating?

Sorry if this posts twice, I never got a confirmation that it went
    thru.

I wanted to comment on a couple of things...

    Easter

I agree with the person who posted earlier about hearing this song
by Marillion. It is truly awesome. I would be interested to hear
Labrie sing this one. I would also like to hear JP tackle the solo.
The solo is incredible but it is very restrained (alot of long bends
and tremelo vibrato by the guitarist Rothery) I would like to hear
JP's approach to see if he stays true to the original.
To anyone interested, Easter is on the album 'Seasons End'. It is
much more mellow than DT but I still highly recommend it.

    Arcade

I found it very amusing that the web page picked Arcade as a
similar band as DT. I saw them a couple of years ago in a small club
in Atlanta. First of all, the band seemed to be in a hurry to get off
the stage since Pearcy kept yelling to the guitarist in between songs
to skip part of the setlist. Also, on numerous occasions, he said to
the crowd, "If you dont like what you hear, then just get the fuck out
    of here" So, I did.

    Kevin Moore

Thanks to Jennifer for bringing us up to date on KM. Please! keep
us posted on anything new you hear from him.
BTW, someone mentioned a song called 'Normal Words'. I dont seem
to recall this song on my copy of the demo. What's it like?

    AD

Mike, I'm looking forward to hear you latest project. I think it
would be great if you could throw some more stuff from the RS gig or
other rarities on there. BTW, what does DT mgt think of all this?
One thing I've noticed from the Marillion FAQ, is that they have a
label solely dedicated to producing official bootlegs approved by the
    band. Now, there's an idea...

    I'll shut up now,

    Rick A.

You tried the wrong places in the Bay Area! I obtained all
the above-mentioned, except for the "Lie" single, and "Wake
Up" (although I am watching for it) at the Compact Disc
Warehouse in Sunnyvale. They carry "imports" for most bands
(Rush, QR, Metallica, etc...). They cannot special order these,
however, one just has to wait for them to come in.

and Re: converting people to being DT fans,

I introduced 3 of my friends (the only ones who listen to
rock and metal) and another just this year. We are all
fanatics (but I am the most!). I've been trying to convert
my friend's 16 year old sister, but she listens to country
and Top 40 (including grunge), and I've had no luck. She
does like Live and Candlebox, so maybye there is hope...
some people are just lost causes.

I would be interested in this as well. At one of the "Awake" shows I
purchased one of those stickers and promptly put it on my back car window.
Unfortunately, the edges are starting to peel up. :( (Too much sun, I

I've heard that those coupons are good for DT. A free show, Friday night, the Hamptons... I'd suggest getting there early.

Hello again. I want to thank Zach for answering the band question. Anyways, up where I live, literally NOBODY listens to DT, Rush, or any prog. stuff. It's all country. All of it. Even my girlfriend is a country fanatic! I mean, I respect country musically, but it's really not my thing. Those that haver heard of the band think the only song they have out is PMU and group them with Nirvana as 'That Heavy Stuff' What a disgrace!! I really don't have a question, I just needed some sympathy. Also, I'd like to put another word in on the Potsdam thing: Anyone going up there this fall who would like to start a band write at ZapcoDT@aol.com. Later

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought > that agnosicism was being neither theistic nor atheistic, but not caring > whether or not there is a God, or god, or supreme being, or whatever.

Actually, it is admitting to having no personal (metaphysical) knowledge of God (note that this does not disclude *any* metaphysical knowledge) but, at the same time, not denying his existence. I was probably off the mark when I said they are "agnostic." How about, "they posess a personal spirituality not affiliated (which is not to say "was not influenced by" with an specific organized religion." This is evident in their lyrics. But, being neither agnostic nor atheistic, I could still be off the mark about Dream Theater !>\>

    > As > far as Rush is concerned, I've always believed their music was more agnostic; > a common theme of many Rush songs of late is that of thinking about those > intangible, unexplainable things that show evidence of a higher power, but > saying, "I don't have time for that right now--let me get my own life in > order first."

Actually, the theme of many Rush albums seems to be that the only "higher power" (note that *Neil* is the lyricist) is the driving force from within ourselves that takes us through life. This is the dominant theme of _Hold Your Fire_ (don't interpret "Prime Mover" as being a song about Aristotle's concept of God; rather, it puts the "prime mover" within all of us). There is not a total absence of spirituality in Rush's lyrics, but I think Neil has made his views clear in the past ----there was just a discussion of this on a.m.r. _Roll the Bones_ is another album that is thematic in the same vein. At least Neil grew out of his objectivist stage after the '70s. (Oh yeah! Listen to "Freewill.")

    > Dream Theater are definitely not agnostic, if my understanding > of the word is on target. Hope I didn't offend anyone. After all, this is > just my $.02...

Who cares if you offend anyone!? As long as you don't do it merely for the sake of doing it. What would progress be without stepping on a few peoples' toes?

This is to steven zebrowski. According to my desk dictionary, agnostic is the belief that the existence of God cannot be proven. I don't think it neccesarily means that you don't care about the existence of God (although you might). I think this definition changes things a little though from what you were saying.

To the folks who answered my not too hard question. Kudos. I did make a gaff when I mentioned that Phillip Dick came up with the slogan. That credit does go to Ridley Scott. It is a great book however. Too bad they couldn't have stuck to the original story moreso (Could Decker BE a replicant, etc...). Oh well. It was better than most movie adaptations are.

To be agnostic, as I have been told, is to be unsure and wavering in the belief of god. To be neither religious, nor yet atheist. I think that Dream Theater does not qualify as religious, and rather, it seems that they haven't really made any decisions as a group on the matter. More than likely, they are unwilling to release extensively religious matter because they have different beliefs.

I think that the Subconscious insert is a good idea, but I have suggestions. First, I think it could do without the whole bit about how 'the CD you're holding in your hands is very special' I think it would work best with the quotes, with the information on each track, and with the lyrics. Also, perhaps someone with the equipment to print out the liners, might sell the liners to the holders of the CDs. It would be cool if they were sold with gold numbers to match the CDs (it'd be tough work to match them up tho.) and then signed by the printer and the writer(s). Pics would be cool too.

I think IMHO, or IMO is a very useful expression that stops people from feeling that other people are pushing opinions on them, and also prevents the user from sounding like an egotist that is always right.

If we start a list of people here that want access to the Japanese versions of the new Lps, would Kaoru be able to get ahold of enough of them? I think that a lot of us would go for them.

For the person that might be able to query the DT members at an upcoming concert, I have a few questions. . . 1) DO the lyricists have a lot of influence in the writing of the music? 2) Will DT every try to push into the west coast for publicity? 3) Can Derek play Wait for Sleep? 4) Will their EP release of 'Eve' have lyrics? 5) What do they think of the discussed suggestions regarding bootlegs? + some...

    Hello,

Someone brought up the fact that they were just getting into prog-metal and wanted to know of some other bands to check out. I have extensive Prog-Metal and Prog-Rock collections (I'm working on some fusion) and I will gladly make a prog-compilation tape for any member of the list who sends me a blank tape in a postage paid padded shipper, or if they send me a check or money order for $4 to cover the cost of the high bias tape 90min and the first class shipping. I offer this service so that many of the smaller bands can get their music out on a sampler and entice people to mail them and pick up their albums. E-mail me for more details.

Question: It IS the relationship between a band and their record company; i.e. DT IAW was on ATCO, if I remember correctly (sorry I don't have it in front of me), while Awake is on Eastwest Records. Whatever, both are subsidiaries of Atlantic Records, which again is a subsidery (sp?, no dictionary on hand, and I.m too lazy to get it) of WEA (Warner-Atlantic-Elektra). Who does what and who actually is in charge of promoting the band, their tours, albums, etc. I have seen this everchanging record compay thread within the same umbrella conglomerate before. For you that know, please enlighten the rest of us.

The following appeared in Ytsejam #891:

    >In the last Jam is was stated that while Rush seemed "atheistic," DT seemed <to this person> to be "agnostic." Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that agnosicism was being neither theistic nor atheistic, but not caring whether or not there is a God, or god, or supreme being, or whatever. If this was the case with Dream Theater, then there would be no songs like The Mirror/Lie, and especially Voices. These songs seem to show the internal conflict of someone who doesn't know what to believe--hardly agnostic. As far as Rush is concerned, I've always believed their music was more agnostic;

a common theme of many Rush songs of late is that of thinking about those intangible, unexplainable things that show evidence of a higher power, but saying, "I don't have time for that right now--let me get my own life in order first." Dream Theater are definitely not agnostic, if my understanding of the word is on target. Hope I didn't offend anyone. After all, this is just my $.02...<

Actually, "agnostic" does not mean one particular thing - there's such things as "positive" and "negative" agnostics. Most agnostics I know just feel that the information either way is not conclusive enough. Some do care and struggle with this, and, for others, it's not a major issue.

Some years ago, I took a "Philosophy of Religion" class where all of these issues came up. My classmates were a fascinating group: athiests, agnostics, and believers. As a result, I've been exposed to people of many differing viewpoints...

To me, Dream Theater *is* agnostic, it's about people struggling with the issue of "is there, or isn't there."

I dunno if anyone posted this little "blurb" from FMQB (Friday Morning Quarterback, a radio trade magazine), but, here it is: ----start of article----

DREAM TEHATER GIVING CULT CLASSIC OFFICIAL RELEASE:

While they work on new music for a '96 release, Dream Theater will release a live album containing their 22 minute opus "A Change Of Seasons." They've only performed it twice in concert*, once in New York and once in Germany, and some bootlegs have been made. But now, as an official release, it will serve as the title cut of the live album which was recorded at a club in London last January, and features cover versions of songs by some of their idols - Pink Floyd, Rush, Elton John, Queen, Yes and Genesis. "A Change of Seasons" is due in stores in September.

    ----end of article----

    * - didn't someone say they performed ACoS in NJ?

Anyway, hope this is of some interest. It's not every day that FMQB puts DT in the "MUSIC NEWS" section. =)

Hey - bootlegs? Like SubCon? =) hehe...

Lets do it! It sounds cool! I have two different freinds who work for paper and printing companies. I will ask them about getting an insert with all this stuff on it if you guys want.

Yea I'll be on the list!
