sure you can hit eject...but i'd rather not...it's supposed to be a DT

i wouldn't want any other band on it...even rush, fates, QR, or any other

I have recently got word that DT is performing around the NYC area. If this
is true, If this is really, really true. I must go. How do I get tickets?
You don't understand, good people of the Ytsejam. I have contracted a rare
and strange affliction in which strange beings from another world have cursed
me. If I don't see Dream Theater live by the end of the summer, I will fall
into a pitt full of toothless fiddle players. From then until the end of
time, I shall be forced to play and sing country music flavored covers of
Latoya Jackson songs. Somebody HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, I have really gotten into the progressive rock scene in the past
year or so. Rush and Dream Theater, as well as Queenryche and Fates Warning,
are major influences on me. So what other bands/musicians should I be taking
    a look at?

I love you Pat! I just called the Strand. Tickets are about $10 ($14 at the
door I think). Now check this. My girlfriend lives in Michigan and she's
flying in on August 3. She likes DT though so you'll probably see us there.

Marc that was me, Jim who said yes to Live. My point being if the rest of the disc is going to be blank it wouldn't hurt to put Live on there if there wasn't much else from DT to fill the disc. I mean you could just stop the disc after DT and not listen to Live if you don't like them, right? I think because of production costs the disc will be same amount anyway. Mike Bahr? I still think a full R. Scotts disc is a good idea once we find out the real track list for the EP. One other thing to concider would be to put the Chris Cintron demo of ACoS on instead that way we have all three versions (live, demo & studio) on disc. That would make me very happy. Anyone else?

    Hello once again!

I'm going home to my parents over the holidays, so I thought, take the time and write to the list. I can read the list at home, but I don't know if I will post to it. Because that's the first post for some time, it will be a bit longer than usual, but so what, there is a lot of DT content. ;-)

    Seven string:

Whoever asked on which songs JP used the seven string guitar: Add ACOS. He used this axe live in Saarbruecken, and I tell you, it was heavy as SH**!

    Live sound problems:

Speaking about that concert, there were also these problems with drums-that- beat-you-to-unconsciousness, a bass and a keys player that you can SEE but not HEAR, etc. And when I saw them in Duesseldorf in February, the seven string guitar drowned even the drums in mud. But hey, I was really near to the stage both times. To watch the band was more important, couldn't wait to see Myungs tapping in Metropolis, WHOA!

    Subconscious/Acoustic Dreams/Hello, Mike Bahr:

Hey Mike! People here seem to love that thing. And it seems that I'm not the only one who's wondering about details like from where you got all the tracks and that kind of stuff. I've already collected some facts, took the lyrics from the Songbook by Michael Kizer, mixed that properly and got something you could call an ASCII-style booklet or whatever you like. I think that some people here on the list always wanted to get something like that.

So what about this: I'll mail you this thing, and because you're really cool ;-), you'll check it, fill in all missing or unsure facts and mail it back to me or directly to the list. You made it, we bought it, now tell us what the hell it IS ;-). It's your turn!

Hey, I read in Ytsejam #889, which had just arrived (!) here, that Randy Haskin has got something like that already, PLEASE send it to me, thanx!!

But what the hell, Mike, my questionnaire is on the way already, so check it, though!

I would put all the parts together and then we've got the ultimate booklet for Subcon. Sounds cool.

About Acoustic Dreams: It's a Dream Theater CD, so there should be Dream Theater on it. Nothing else. That's my vote.

Another thing that comes to my mind: When I listened to ACoS on Subconscious, I noticed the scratching noise right before that "I'll always remember the chill of November"-part (about 4:00, I think). Seems to be oversampled or whatever. First I thought that was an error on my CD, but I checked the other one I got, and ok... Wondered if that distortion (and the few other ones I noticed after the millions of times I heard it since then) was also on the original recording. Had no chance to check this, because I never heard The Dance Of Eternity. (That was indeed one of the reasons I got Subcon, I wanted to hear ACoS at last!)

If it was, ok, not your fault. If not, blame on you (;-)) but please remember this when you make the Acoustic CD.

    EP/Damage Inc./Easter/whatever:

As I asked Mike Portnoy about the covers that will be on the EP, he didn't mention Damage Inc. or one of the Marillion tracks. Rush, Elton John, that rock-classics-medley, you know all that from the track list that appeard some days ago on the 'Jam. But no Easter. Winter won't be on it, too. What a pity. It's an experience hearing James LaBrie sing like Tori Amos. ;-)

    Japanese version of the EP/Kaoru:

Hey, I was going to ask if one of the Japanese 'Jammers could help us getting this version, but Kaoru was faster. Mike Portnoy said, that there WILL be bonus tracks on it, and if he's right, I sure want to get one!

    #ytsejam:

At least I met a FEW of you on this channel. Nice chatter though. Too bad I won't be able to use IRC over the holidays, because I would have to call the university terminal server from home. My parents would kill me because of the phone bill that this would cause. But well, stay tuned.

How to get all that unreleased stuff/HELP ME!

Is there anybody out there who could make me a copy of all that unreleased material like the Majesty demos, the Instrumental stuff and the audition tapes? Maybe one of the German 'Jammers? The problem is: I wasn't into bootlegs till now, so of course I've got nothing to trade...

(I remember that I told this Brian Cox on #ytsejam, and he never spoke to me again ;-). No, just kidding, but he seemed to be really disappointed that he only met someone he couldn't trade with. He seems to be that manic collector type. So what, was nice to meet you there!)

If someone wants to help me though, please, send me a mail! Thanx in advance!

I think this message is now long enough. But at least I won't add a 20 lines long signature... Please, Ytsejammers: Shorten your .sigs, lengthen your messages. Let's waste bandwidth for better things. ;-)

    That's it.

If you don't like Moving Pictures, then Rush is probably a lost cause as far as you are concerned! The good thing about Rush is that no two albums sound alike (compare IAW with Awake... kind of the same thing).

    > on it and then Presto. > They were just okay as opposed to unbelivable.

How can you listen to "Scars" and not think that Peart is unbelievable? Perhaps his style is too soft, or his subtilty is lost on you (as Mark Zonders' style is)? Personally, I think, that while Presto is a great album *in and of itself*, it is sup-par as far as Rush goes (too soft for my tastes). When it first came out I was sorely dissapointed, but I have come to love it over the years. And of course there is the [true] rumor that producer Rupert Hine ruined its potential.

    > If I am wrong, please let me know what albums are good.

Try _Hemispheres_ (1978). "La Villa Strangiato" is one of the greatest instrumentals ever done by anyone. Plus, Neil's style on this album is more "harsh"; you might like it better. It did take me a year or two to really get into Rush after I was first exposed to them (circa 1987, okay-- so I'm just a pup Rushfan), but I soon became fanatical. > Trey Allen

    <<and from another post:>>

    >Well, I saw the comparison that Jason Hartman made about JP and Alex Lifeson >and had to reply. Jason, although John plays better in a technical way, Alex >is great as well.

And we know that Alex is more than capable of playing at a "higher level". Listen to "La Villa Strangiato" if you want to hear virtuoso guitar playing.

    >I think that it was unfair to compare LTL to Stick It Out - >I mean c'mon, that's like saying that By-Tor is heavier than Wait For Sleep. >This isn't meant to be a flame and I DON'T want to start a JP vs AL thread, >but I needed to say something. You also have to remember that Rush doesn't >worry about the technical aspect as much as the songwriting aspect.

It's just a matter of maturity. Sure, up until the '80s (six or seven albums) Rush's playing was rather "masturbatory", but it is probably more complex and coherent these days than it has ever been.

    Hi Ytsejammers!

I still haven't gotten any definitive word on whether DT will perform in Long Island on July 28th yet (anyone have word?). The original poster stated that they will be playing at the Canoe Place Inn that night, so I went upon myself to search the web, and tah-dah!.. found a website for the place. If they are playing the CPI that night, there's a coupon on that homepage which gives free admission every Friday night. I don't know if that is honored for when a major band plays there, but it's worth printing out and giving a try.

    The URL is : http://www.e-coupons.com/ny/hamptons/hampbays/cpi.htm

There is a phone number on the page, so all you local Long Islanders can call and confirm if it's true or not. There are also directions to the place. And in another page that's linked to it, it says that Dream Theater is coming soon, so that's a good sign.

If it sounds like I'm desperate to know, I am! I have yet to see DT live and it is a top priority for me right now.

Thats cool...Im going to see them on July 18th at Jones Beach. Unfortunately the seats arent that great. Ill deal with it. I have heard that rush is in Pre-production for a new album...which according to a Die-Hard Rush fan means that they should have a new album in about a year. Something I askeda while ago but got no response was if anyone knew if Rush was putting out a boxed set with all their stdio albums in it. Is this true? Or is it a rumor. I hope it is true because Rush is long overdue for a boxed set.

The song ACOS is anti-Christian? I haven't really read the lyrics in a while... > Problem though...I'm surrounded by fundamentalists! My brother, his wife, > my in-laws, and two or three people at work are almost totally fanatical > about this stuff, and feel it is their province in life to "convert" me to > their closed-minded world view.

Any world-view is *by definition* "closed-minded". Get it?

    > It really hit home when my brother > returned from a creation "science" convention and told me that all we > learned in school was wrong.

Evolution is a very complex scientific concept that encompases many different theories. Some have been verified experimentally and observationally, and others are still theoretical.

What is interesting is that evolution should not be taught so dogmatically (note-- I do not believe that "creation-science" should be taught in high school, either). Most teachers at that level (we won't even comment on the students) do not understand the basic theories themselves. For instance, in my h.s. biology class (1987) I was taught the theory of "ontongeny being a shortened recapitulation of phylogeny" (I hope didn't mix those terms up!) (i.e. that embyonic development Mirrors (DT content!) the evolutionary development of the species) even though this theory was abandoned by biology over 20 or 30 years ago. Famous evolutionary biologist Stephen J. Gould even comments on how he was taught this theory in high school after it was proven to be false!

Secondly, we were given the famous "peppered moth" example of natural selection as a suppossed "proof" phylogenic evolution. It is natural selection, but I fail to see how a minor variation within a species is a proof of _descent_ between species. I do give credit to Mr. Lukens for pointing this out, even if no one understood what he meant. > In a sense, then, I feel a deep affinity with the lyrics in ACOS, Voices, > and A Slient Man. Like myself, I believe DT sees the horrible inhumanities > committed in the name of christiandom (pick one.. Crusades, Inquisition, > etc.) and only sees hypocrisy. Faced with the dual meaning and disgusting, > self-righteous nature of most fanatical fundamentalists, they seek > spirituality within themselves.

The fundamentalists were not responsible for this; rather, it was evil people within the Catholic Church that perpetuated these atrocities. The problem is with individual and group *ideologies*, not the belief in the doctrines taught by Christ. There have been (unless you think like Nietzsche, of course!) worse atrocities committed by other religious and non-religious people/organizations throughout history.

    > Again pick one: > > "Don't expect your own Messiah, This neverworld which you desire is only > in your mind" > > "When there is reason, tonight I'm Awake. As oppossed to Rush, whose (lyrics) beliefs are decidedly "atheistic," DT is decidedly, probably more so now since KM left, "agnostic."

    > They're > just a group of intelligent, relatively spiritual guys who are struggling > with the hypocrisy of fundamentalist Christiandom. Where on one hand the > fundamentalists say "love thy neighbor" and on the other they persecute > anyone who is different - whether its because of race, religion, or sexual > preference.

Do they? One can point out hypocrisy within any ideology that is cloaked within a benevolent philosophy. I consider myself "somewhat 'fundamentalist'" (is that an oxymoron?). Most of my friends are atheists/agnostics, however. We do not discuss religion, though, unless they start spouting obvious straw-man arguments against Christianity. Then I set them straight !>)>

I'm sure _I'll_ probably get flamed for posting so much non-DT content.

Hmmm, this lyric strikes me as rather Objectivist...

    Dear jammers,

That's a pretty good subject to talk about! How many people did you get into Dream Theater? I remember three years ago, the only people in my high school who were into DT were myself and two of my friends. This year in my senior (I graduated), about one third of the graduating class listens to Dream Theater! Also, many underclassmen in my school listen to Dream Theater now. Nice! Can't wait to go to Columbia to continue spreading this! Everyone in my dorm will be listening to DT by the end of my Freshman year!

Mookie, the guy I met in #ytsejam, sorry bout my line getting cut off like that. My sister picked up the extension, and my modem dropped. I wasn't able to log back on afterwards. Maybe I'll catch you again in IRC! Well, TTYL!

    Yours, Jeff =)

Helloween, Cynic (if you can stand death-vocals, but the music is out of this world), and MASTERMIND (ELP-style metal).

By no means is Dream Theater general audience music. Nor is Rush, or Operation Mindcrime, or Marillion, etc. (Though Pink Floyd is, arguably). Back in San Francisco, if I asked twenty people about Dream Theater, or Rush, etc. They would most likely, depending on the crowd, all recognize Pink Floyd. About half would know Rush. More if they are in their thirties+, and less if they are in high school-. 18-twenty of them would have never heard of Dream Theater, much less heard their music. San Diego, apparently, is about the same. I think that San Francisco/Bay Area, would probably be a more receptive audience to Dream Theater in general that the rest of the country, but they have null publicity. Here in Ann Arbor, almost everyone has heard of Dream Theater, somehow or another, and they usually mention as much when they see my "Awake" t-shirt. Here in Ann Arbor, I can find two/three copies of Awake and Images and Words each at most given music stores. Here in Ann Arbor, I found several copies of Lie and the Silent man and Marquee, and WDADU within 6 blocks of the house. In San Francisco, I called every single branch of Blockbuster music, Tower, Musicland, Wherehouse, Sam Goody's, and all the local record companies. I found that there were 0 copies of Live at the Marquee, 0 copies of WDADU, 0 copies of the Silent man, 0 copies of Lie, 5-20 copies of I&W, and same for Awake. Most of the record stores, especially those known for having the obscure, had never heard of Dream Theater, and had never had any of their albums in stock. I was furious!!! I finally got a hold of the video, when a branch of Blockbuster music, located at Serramonte, had managed to special order and locate it, taking about 5 months. I also found a place called CD research, located all the way over in Davis, that gave me a two-page list with prices on DOE, LatM, WDADU, tSM, Lie, Wake up, etc. ranging from 30$ per CD to 60$ per CD. Ridiculous. Anyways, to make a long story long, only one of my friends has ever seen DTon MTV, and between us, we've each heard PMU on the radio once, when they played it on 105 as we were all just leaving from a Prom.

Sorry to ramble, but I thought I'd share my story, one that I think most on the west coast could sympathize with in some manner or another, and show you all what we deal with over here. I think that we on the West Coast should make an exceptional effort to make Dream Theater familiar in the minds of all those that listen to alternative rock.

    Viva la Dream!

    So long, Jun-Dai Bates

This was in response to Bracken Odiorne's metal trivia question from the last 'Jam... what fictional company had the slogan "More Human Than Human".

Was it not the Tyrell Corporation from Blade Runner? (DADOES)

To everybody: RELAX. No Live on the AD CD. You all made that very clear, and in a few cases, some of you graciously offered some collectible material for me to put in its place. I won't say specifically because I still need to hear the material to hear if I can include it or not. I will say this: Perfect Strangers WILL be on it, and it WILL be from a soundboard tape.

    Hello fellow 'jammers!

I must apologize, no DT content this time, but since many are Rush fans as well, I figured I post the following:

I got a letter (in snail mail) from Jerry Brown (a huge Rush fan), who Ive been corresponding with for sometime. Among other things, he mentioned a book he was working on. This originally was going to be an article for Goldmine magazine, but apparently became too big a project for Goldmine. Nonetheless, heres a direct quote from his letter:

The Goldmine article has grown out of its limits. Now, Im in the midst of working on a full fledged Rush book! Complete with photos, career itinerary and discography. This little project may take a couple years, but anything quality is worth the wait! Im a stickler for accuracy and Im serious about making it happen. The manuscript is now about half finished and in the rough. Please spread the word, I need any accurate dates/venues/opening bands, especially the early years. If you get the chance, pass on to the Internet world about my book project in the works. Anyone who helps will have his/her name in the forward acknowledgements.

Jerry definitely will get this project done - if any of you subscribe to A Show of Fans (a Rush) fanzine, you will already be familiar with the amount of writing he does and the amount of info he has. Oh and BTW, I already sent him a copy of the unofficial tour dates thats on the NMS home page (last revision was sept 94, I believe), so dont bother sending him that. However, Im sure he would look forward to hearing from all of you fellow Rush fans, so send him a letter!! His snail mail address (nope, hes not a netter) is: 1618 Crabapple Cove Ct N Jacksonville, FL 32225-2500

Hope you all will take part in this - itll be quite exciting once (eventually) it is completed.
