    >>What I want to know is, which member of DT likes Joyce? Any ideas?

Guess many people have already answered your question before me, but...
it was Kevin who likes James Joyce. Last summer, in an interview article
carried in a heavy metal magazine in Japan called "Burrn!", Kevin talked
about his favorite author (Allen Ginsberg, Henry Miller, James Joyce etc)
and his way of viewing thing, the world.

Kev told that he became unsure if he really believes in God and began to
read the works of Joyce. He was about 21 years old then. His conclusion
was very similar to that of Stephane Daedalus (of Joyce's "A Portrait of
the Artist as a Young Man"), I think. Finally, he concluded that he
believes in God, but not simply the God in Christianity. He said that he
came to believe in GOD and that what every religion is in search of is the
same thing, and GOD is actually only one and the same. That's what he
    learned.

    >>I think it was Ken Bibb who mentioned that Nora might be about James
    >>Joyce's wife (?). Was her name Nora?
    >>
    >>Anyone know anything about Joyce's life?

Yes, actually Joyce's wife was Nora.
His mother's name was Mary Jane, and one of the characters in "The Dead"
was based on her, I guess.

    ---
BTW, Joyce's "Finnegans Wake" was titled as "Work In Progress" when it had
published serially on the magazine. DT's tour of '93 was entitled "Music
In Progress". Is this just a coincidence? Does anybody get any idea?

My impression of the mix in Portland Ore was that first of all it was WAY too loud. The drums over powered the rest of the band, the keys were barely audible at times, almost NO bass guitar, although you could see John M's fingers flying. Petrucci was uneven. The sound tech was CONSTANTLY adjusting levels. And as I mentioned in my post, I had my 10 year old Portnoy-worshipping-son with me and the crew let us on the riser for the mixing console so that he could see the show. So my total experience of the mix was 2 feet from their sound tech. They did a sound check with 2 songs, LaBrie was not there for the sound check.

    "Warren in Oregon"..........(HI BABS!!)

P.S. to Hairball....everything you said about the mixing business makes sense. At the above mentioned concert the crew gave us ear plugs (we brought our own so we saved them for souveniers). As far as I could tell the whole crew, sound tech, even the band's wives who were there made sure to wear ear protection.

NO! If you like vocal harmonies listen to BARBERSHOP! Not an old 1940s quartet, but the Acoustix or Keepsake or the Vocal Majority chorus. I promise you guys barbershop, next to DT is the best kept musical secret! It is the most unbelievable thing to listen to,watch and/or sing! It gives me just as much of a thrill as being at a DT show!

If your interested in some more info, e-mail me and give you some wav files and other stuff.

Hello to all ytsejammers! How are we all? Someone mentioned OZZY (the Godfather of metal) the other day. Well, before I go on, I'd better put some DT content in or else I'd get castrated! I CAN trace Ozzy to DT (kinda silly). Well, I heard that Ozzy will have a new album soon. On it, the drummer Deen Castronovo plays. Deen played on Marty Friedman's solo album "Dragon's Kiss" as well as the two Cacophy albums, and Steve Vai's latest solo album "Alien Love Secrets." In turn Steve Vai was the first to really use a seven-string Ibanez guitar on anything (I think on "Sex & Religion" but I could be wrong). There, we have our tie to DT! Now, my only real inquiry is: does anyone know when Ozzy's new album is due? I think its called "Ozzmosis". Well, later everyone.

Hey all, For some reason my server announced in the middle of my message that it was out of buffer space and then promptly kicked me out before I could send my message. So please excuse me if my message was sent in an incomplete form. I swear it was not my fault. Anyhow, I was trying to say that my vote is for Mike Bahr (whom we all dearly love) to go back to the original plan if he doesn't have enough room to fill out Acoustic Dreams and do WD&JU first. It's not like he's going to completely shitcan one in favour of the other, and that gives him more time to collect other cool DT goodies that will fit with the acoustic stuff. Of course this is provided that he has already collected all of the stuff that he intends to publish on WD&JU. If both tracklists are short, then perhaps AD and WD&JU could be combined. What extra will go on WD&JU to make it 70 minutes? I think that sounds promising. Live just wouldn't fit in I think. They're a great band, but I don't like multi-band albums, unless they play very similarly. Also, just as an addendum, Mouth For War has got one of the coolest guitar riffs I've heard in a long time. Of course it is definately not a Metropolis or a Monument, but then again, it doesn't sound as bad as anything off of Type O Negative's album (no flames please; just an opinion). Give her another try. The stuff on Testament's new album is rediculously easy too, but I still think it's one of the best CDs I own. Speaking of easy songs that are real catchy and adding the element of trivia: What fictional company has as it's slogan the title of White Zombie's newest song, More human Than Human? I'll give a hint. Phillip K. Dick came up with it.

    Hello all!

I have two of the three parts needed to make the complete "insert" for Subcon...

I have a track-by-track description of where each song was recorded and some information nuggets about why each song is important/significant/cool enough to make it on to Sub.

Second, I have a small essay on how and Why Sub was made, so in 5 years when you whip it out for some fanatic DT collector (umm, like yourself!!) you will know what the heck this CD is!

The third and final part is the lyrics. I understand that the full set of lyrics for all the Subcon songs is available at someone's WWW site.

If anyone wants me to send them the first two insert parts (text only over email) let me know, *or* if there is significant enough interest, I can post them to the List.....

    Thanks!

Hello everyone, it's Babs-a-roo! I have to share this with everyone because I am really excited about this. There has been talk of them building a concert amphitheatre in Geneseo. Yes, little small college town of Geneseo. Wow! The Geneseo village has approved it - all it has to do is go through some more red tape before being so. They are planning on having seating for 6,500 but room for outdoor sitting for 20,000. They estimate that they want to average 30 outdoor shows for the summer. Wow! This was in this mornings paper, so it is not my mind playing tricks on me. Wow! Of course, if DT ever plays here everyone is more than welcome to crash at my place if need be. So remember that Ytsejammers! Babs will leave the light on (Just like Motel 6). BTW, it will take two to three years for this to happen - things don't happen overnight here. Wow!!!!!! Does this mean that I am no longer a hick in the woods of upstate NY?

    Take care everyone! -BABS

BTW, I've never heard +Live+ before and It's not like I have have any special desire to, but *really*!

This is the absolute worst thing you could do. This is where you are truly ripping off a band by buying a boot INSTEAD of an official release. I urge you not to do this. Progresssive rock groups need all the monetary support they can get. Please don't take money away from them by not buying an official release when it's available.

To jenniebear, how can I help with that prog show? I know I can raise intrest in the local area.

To Phil, the "recent" DT fan. Two words, "deja vu". Sounds very similar to my story. I had half of my dorm rocking last year, and with my new dorm this year I plan to do it again. You have always been a DT fan Phil, you just didn't know it.

I also like the idea of a DT window decal. It would really kick ass next to my KNAC sticker. For right now, I huess I'll have to settle for fingering it in on the years worth of dust that has piled up on my rear window.

    Hello,

Get Better Al ------------- My prayers go out to Al. I hope he recovers as soon as possible. Its painful when any person gets injured in an accident, let alone another jammer.

Acoustic Dreams --------------- No Live on the album Mike. I like Live as well, but this is a Dream Theater project. You could put the other acoustic Silent Man version from the Providence radio or TV thing that was around before Awake. You could also put on any covers that weren't played at the covers gig. I mean versions. Try to get ahold of In the Flesh from one of the European shows, Killers, and Perfect Strangers, they would be good additions. Or if you have a good copy (excellent sound) of the majesty demos, you could put this on the end. Most of the copies out there have lousy sound quality.

Rush's New Album ---------------- I think the latest rumor is an Alex solo album in the fall and a new album with Peter Collins producing in the Spring of 1996. They were waiting for his schedule to clear before they make the new album. I'm still holding out for the all instrumental album.... I may be holding for a while. Or they could do a duet with Primus, that would rule!

Dream Theater back in the USA ----------------------------- I hope the guys can book someplace like Merriweather when in Maryland and skip HammerJacks. That damn club will be the death of me, Dream Theater is too big to play there, too many people show and most of us can't breathe. I couldn't even move to get a beer! Well I guess I'll have to happy that they play on the east coast often. <grin>

Allan Holdsworth ---------------- I agree, pick up some stuff by this guitarist. He plays a lot of jazz and improv, plus he is a major influence on Petrucci and Lifeson, especially Alex. I would recommend the first UK (Bruford, Wetton, Jobson, Holdsworth), Bruford's One of a Kind (Bruford, Holdsworth, Berlin, Stewart). He has tons of albums.

    Later,

    Mike

Hi...I'm just wondering if I were lucky enough to find someone with an extra copy of Subconscious for sale??? Unfortunately, I lost my account while all of this was happening, and just recently got a new one. It would be incredibly appreciated if someone were willing to part from an extra??? Thanks in advancve...

    Hey everyone,

As many of you know, I've been having some technical problems lately (had to have the motherboard replaced, ouch), but everything seems to be working ok now, so it's time to answer some mail. :)

    Business first:

On Tue, 11 Jul 1995, Phil <FilDBaskt@aol.com> asked:

"Does anyone know if there are still any Kevin demos available?"

Yes! I'll e-mail you a list of available dub sites ASAP.

BTW, for any dub sites out there who are reading this, if you want to close up shop, or if you already have but haven't notified me yet, PLEASE DO. :) I've had several people write to me saying that the dubber I recommended to them said they weren't making copies anymore, yet I had no idea they were closed in the first place. If you've closed down, let me know so that you don't get any unnecessary e-mail, and other fans don't get frustrated because they can't get their copy from you. Thank you. :)

    Onto other stuff:

On Mon, 10 Jul 1995 Phil, <FilDBaskt@aol.com>, who seems to be posting a lot lately <G>, wrote:

"I just heard Subcon for the first time today and I wAnt to know what the hell Wanted DOA is supposed to be? Why is DT making fun of Bon Jovi? And is that the band playing in the background or is that just a drum loop and some other crap?"

On Tue, 11 Jul 1995, Adam Bertapelle <bertapel@ucsu.Colorado.EDU> replied:

"I believe John P. recorded this song as an instructional tape to one of his students when he taught lessons. I believe it is a drum machine and phoney bass line. Then Kev's (?) roommate got a hold of it, did the whacky Beavis & Butthead commentary, and somehow one of us got a hold of it. Am I on track, everyone? Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as Petrucci's part, I don't think they were mocking Bon Jovi."

Also on Tue, 11 Jul 1995, our CD King, Mike Bahr <garion@indirect.com>, in an apparent fit of silliness & insanity<G>, responded:

"OK, the story once more for all of you who are tuning in late... :)

Petrucci plays the cover of WDOA with a drum machine as his backup, then leaves the tape on his counter for one of his students to pick up. A very drunk Kevin Moore and his roomate Rich Kern stumble into the kitchen, see the tape, and a very big grin spreads on each of their faces as they know, in that moment, what it is that they simply MUST do. :) I know I took some artistic license there, but that about surmises it."

Hahaha. Nice one, Mike. :) That was so funny, I almost _wish_ it were true. ;) Both replies were somewhat correct, and here's what I know...

John Petrucci recorded the guitar/drum machine tracks on a 4-track recorder for a student of his to practice along with, and that original tape included NO vocals whatsoever. At some point, and I'm still not quite sure how (I'm inclined to believe that "kitchen counter" scenario of Mike's to be as likely an explanation as any <G>), Rich Kern, a longtime friend of Kev's & rumored to be ex-Mesa Boogie rep for John P (he also played guitar on some of Kev's new demos, for those of you who didn't know), got ahold of a copy of the instrumental 4-track tape & added his own colorful, uhh, "vocals," or whatever you'd like to call them. :) So, to more directly answer the questions asked, no DT is not making fun of Bon Jovi, Rich Kern IS (haha), yes, it's John P w/a drum machine, not the full band playing, yes, it is EXTREMELY silly, and no, Kev had absolutely _nothing_ to do with it... or so he claims. :) I say, draw your own conclusions. ;)

The tape originated in DT trading circles from yet another student of Petrucci's who managed to get a copy somehow. He made a copy of it for me right around the time _I&W_ was released and I later provided the copy that Mike Bahr used for the Subconscious project, presumably because I have the lowest generation copy available. To be honest, even the quality of the copy I have is pretty terrible, and Mike deserves a lot of credit for remastering the track to the point of making it listenable for the CD. I didn't think it was possible, but the Subconscious version sounds better than the original tape I sent him! :)

On Tue, 11 Jul 1995, Phil <FilDBaskt@aol.com>, who can't seem to stop posting <G>, wrote:

"I recently saw a Jammer who used the following quote as a signoff:

'Tower of Ivory, they used to say. House of gold.... How can a woman be a tower of ivory or a house of gold.'

The Jammer creditied this quote to Dream Thearter, most likely because it is used in Vigil. However this is not a DT quote. This quote is from James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. This is also the case with the opening to Vigil: 'Once upon a time and a very good time it was there was a moocow....' This is the first part of the opening sentence to Portrait.

DT also uses a Joyce quote in 6:00. 'I know all abouyt the honor of god Mary Jane.' This one is from his short story The Dead.

What I want to know is, which member of DT likes Joyce? Any ideas?"

Then on Tue, 11 Jul 1995, Andrew Keegan <akeegan@liii.com> responded:

"I think it was Ken Bibb who mentioned that Nora might be about James Joyce's wife (?). Was her name Nora?

Anyone know anything about Joyce's life?"

Phil, I think by "Vigil" you mean "Eve," right? (Help me out here, folks. Wasn't "Eve" entitled "Vigil" on one of the bootleg CDs?) Anyway, the info about the use of Joyce's _Portrait_ in "Eve" was included in the YJ FAQ during the last revision, I believe. But for anyone who wants more info on Joyce in general, check out the following web sites: "http://astro.ocis.temple.edu/~callahan/joyce.html" & "http://www.mcs.net/~jorn/html/jj.html."

Not only do Joyce references appear in "Eve" and "6:00" (just for the record, _The Dead_ is only one story of many that makes up the novel _Dubliners_), they also pop up in "Surrounded" and in Kev's newer demo track, "Nora," which is most definitely about Joyce's wife, Nora (Barnacle) Joyce. The song "Nora" was inspired by a letter Joyce wrote to her, accusing her of having an affair with a friend of his behind his back (Nora _didn't_ actually cheat on him; the "friend," Vincent Cosgrave, just spread this rumor to try to break up their marriage). Kev sent me a photocopy of the letter & I'd be glad to post it's contents here if there's enough interest. (In case anyone wants to go to their local library & read the letter in context w/Joyce's other letters to Nora, it can be found in the book _Letters of James Joyce_, Volume II, edited by Richard Ellmann, published by Faber, 1966. The specific letter in question is the one dated August 6, 1909.) So, yes, to put it mildly, Kev is a big James Joyce fan! :)

    More Kev Kwestions:

On Mon, 10 Jul 1995, John R. Kotzian <koggie@cyberspace.org> wrote:

"I brought out my copy of Kevin Moore's demo again, and for some reason this time it really connected with me and I can't seem to put the thing away.

Does anybody know what he is up to? Is he going to do an album? Does he need us to petition a record company? If so, He's got my signature."

What a nice thing to say, John. I'm sure Kevin would appreciate your encouragement & support. :)

The last time I heard from Kev, around mid-June, he didn't mention anything about having a record deal yet, but he did say that he has some tentative writing/recording plans for later this summer. Since I still don't know for sure if it's a "go" or not, it would probably be best for me not to actually say what's up yet. Don't worry, as soon as it's confirmed, I will post about it here to let you all know the deal. :) If these recording plans do indeed come to fruition, I think most of you will be quite excited & pleased with the news! But for now, he's still writing, experimenting & working hard on new material, as always, and very grateful that so many of you have stuck by him on his solo venture.

And now for something completely different...

On a totally non-DT note, on Tue, 11 Jul 95, Will Buckley <buckley@powdml.enet.dec.com> wrote:

"This seems to be a common theme in the Ytsejam crowd ... i.e., 'Petrucci is God'. Indeed, he is very good, and one of my favorite players ... but .. have any of you ever heard Alan Holsworth?!?"

Yes! :) And FWIW, I think Petrucci would be the first person to agree with you about just how amazing Allan is. I've been a fan of his since UK myself, & I love Allan's pop-flavored textures on the Level 42 album _Guaranteed_ just as much as his many fusion-oriented solo/instrumental ventures. He's quite simply a brilliant, unique musician & I would recommend him to anyone who likes hearing original & somewhat frightening music (haha) because he IS a monster. :) I must admit, however, that I am definitely of the opinion that Allan is not human, but from some strange alien race who are all born playing guitar & do nothing else for the rest of their lives, and therefore, he cannot be accurately compared to other musicians on the planet Earth. :D

I must also relay a very fond farewell to our friend, Matt Thomas <M.J.Thomas-SE2@cs.bham.ac.uk>, who is graduating (congratulations!) & moving on to life in the "real" world. :) I will certainly miss his regular "UK news & views" posts, but do hope to actually meet him in person next year when he comes to Los Angeles. IF his girlfriend will let him, that is. ;) Good luck, Matt, and have a great summer!

Best wishes to Al Balkiewicz, get well soon!!

    Take care all,
