Yes, it means that you aren't a fan of a certain band (who shall
    remain nameless, for the moment).

Mike, does this mean that _Cygnus_ will have the Majesty

I happened to see Arcade open up for Bon Jovi a little over 2 years ago
(yes I did see Bon Jovi, hey I USED to like them). Anyway, the lead
singer is Steven Pearcy, the former lead singer of Ratt, a dead 80's
band. I wouldn't say that they are anywhere in the mold of DT, Rush, or
'Ryche. Just pretty much straight-ahead rock, much like Ratt was, but
not as good. I was not impressed at all. One funny thing happened at
the show was where Pearcy was trying to get the crowd all riled up and
was not getting any response whatsoever. He then looks down at a bunch
of girls in the front row and says in a pissed off voice, 'Ah, I'll f**k
ya later.' I thought it was tasteless and funny at the same time.

Someone mentioned recently that DT is coming to Long Island on July
28th. Has there been any more word on shows in that area? I'll be in
Jersey for a month starting later this month, and I MUST see them! Being
that they never come to Florida anymore, I have yet to see them live. I
guess if that is the only show they're gonna play, I'll take the 3 hour
drive to get there. Please keep us posted!

    Thanks!

I've got 6th row seats for the 'Ryche show at Garden State Arts
Center! Joy! (in a Stimpy voice).

hmm...i should give it a try again...when i did it with similar input
it gave me LatM way at the bottom as well as several fates albums at the bottom

i have the album only because columbia house sent it to me and i forgot
    to send it back.
the band has the guy from Ratt on vocals and Fred Coury (sp?) the ex-drummer
from Cinderella on it. it's their debut album...they had a new one out a
    little while ago i believe.
as far as the music...it's not to bad if you like hard rock stuff...i was/am
a fan of Cinderella and similar groups, and i liked the album, but i hardly
    ever listen to it.
it's not progressive at all, so i don't know why it would be at the top
    of the list.

    Greets--

having done both Monitor *and* soundboard work, maybe I can help out
    with a few things here...

When one works the monitor board, the main responsibility is to include
what each person wants in their own particular mix. The guitarist,
for example, might want just himself, the drums and vocals, while the
bass player might just want herself and the drums....it's all an
individual thing, as far as monitors go.

As far as soundboard goes, every soundman has a different sound he is
looking for. This also all depends on the size and acoustics of the
venue that the band is playing in....thus the sound will vary from
night to night....this is why sound checks are *SO* important. The
soundman needs to make sure that the mix is what he wants to hear.

When you are in the first few rows, or right up against the stage, most
of what you are hearing is coming straight from the amps on stage.
Since the monitors fire back onto the stage, you wont hear much of them,
if you can hear them at all....the BIG difference is that this is a
DRASTICALLY different sound than the soundguy hears. He hears the sound
from the nice, big PA that's set up, and he hears it AFTER he's mixed
the sound here, tweaked this there, added some reverb here, etc, etc, etc.

This puts Us, the concert-goer in a very rough position. If we really
want to be there for the band-experience, and want to see every bead of
sweat and drop of blood, then by all means, go up front. If you want the
best sound available, sit either in front of, next to, or if possible,
BEHIND the soundboard, as you will hear EXACTLY what the soundman is
hearing, and it is there that you will get the truest sound......consequently,
this is also where you will find the majority of people who are making
nice audience tapes (for those bands who allow such things), and is
a good place to MEET those people, and if you're nice, and lucky enough,
score yourself a future trade for the concert that you have just seen.

sorry to bore everyone with technical babble....

..I'll get off the soapbox now....

This seems to be a common theme in the Ytsejam crowd ... i.e., "Petrucci is God". Indeed, he is very good, and one of my favorite players ... but .. have any of you ever heard Alan Holsworth?!?

I've been a fan since his early days with Gong, and boy, can this cat _play_! If anything, HOLDSWORTH IS GOD!! I just saw his quartet last week in Boston and they absolutely SMOKED!! Alan played both standard guitar as well as the synth-axe (which he has developed a very lyrical voice on). He has mega-burning chops, but he's not just a speed demon -- his impovisations are legendary.

Yeah, John P. has chops, but I highly recommend all you guitar nuts checking out Holdsworth sometime soon!

Great mix, in general, but one MEGGA NEGATIVE vote for "lovin' touchin' squeezin" unless the boys really light some fire beneath it. Journey's first couple of albums - pre Steve Perry - were really great (for that era) but after that they sold the farm big time. I know that there could be Steve Perry fans out there, but I am definately not one of them. Give me Metallica's "Damage, Inc" or give me death !!!

Yeah, mine was Fates heavy, among other things - in fact, I already owned five of the top ten albums selected. I was more surprised by the fact that it could make any sense of my input of I&W, Little Earthquakes, Rift (Phish), Natural Born Killers sdtk, and the Yakko's World Animaniacs CD. I have trouble trying to find any similarities in any of those.

Hey everyone - I'm actually posting something!

For those of you who've been here a while & possibly forgotten who I am, or not known that I've changed accounts, it's Hairball ... ya know, that frequently annoying audio-type?

As for the question, there's only a few Billy Joel songs I'd possibly like to see them do - "Angry Young Man" or "Just A Fantasy."

However, I WOULD like to see them cover "On The Loose" by Saga. Now THAT would be smokin'!

Now, regarding JOURNEY - I saw the post the other day about DT doing "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" by Journey. Ugh. I'm a huge Journey fan - though more because of Neal Schon than that Perry guy (grin) - and I think LTS is one of Journey's weakest songs. Honestly. I'd rather have seen 'em do something like the title tracks off "Escape" and "Frontiers," or maybe "Edge of The Blade." For older Journey, "Winds Of March" is probably one of their crowning moments as a band...I could even see 'em doing stuff off of the pre-Perry era of Journey albums - which, if you've never heard them, is quite interesting. You'd never think it was the same band! - but NOT LTS.

Why can't someone cover "Lonely Boy" by Andrew Gold? =) Great piece of '70's pop music.

Anyway...just my two cents. -Hairball, that audio engineer who has shitty monitors & can't stand being broke. (sigh)

Hey look! Two posts in one day! Wow! <grin>

Quoting: >Could someone with a little more experience in the mixing >area (e.g. Hairball) back me up on this?

Nice to see I'm still thought of. Thanks.

Anyway, to really appreciate what a live sound reinforcement engineer (S.R.E. - I just made that up, don't know if it's a legit acronym, but it'll work) does (the sound guy) think about this:

This one person goes around with the band (usually, unless there's a "house sound person" who runs the sound for the particular venue that employs him/her, regardless) for months, night after night, and exposes themselves to that loud volume for months on end.

Now, think about how your ears ring after ONE concert. Multiply the annoyance level of that by about 30, and you'll have a general idea of what a touring S.R.E. goes through.

Having said that, most SREs, if they're smart, will wear ear protection for obvious reasons. Next time you're at a concert, try sticking your fingers in your ears - don't pop your ear drum - and see what you hear. It's quite interesting. =)

Okay...having seen DT three times, I can remember there being a sound balance problem at the third show. I remember, because that was the show my former radio partner & I met Jim Pitulski, and got back stage at the Theater of The Living Arts (TLA) here in Philly. I remember Mike asking this guy who was talking to him what he thought of the mix. The guy said, "Oh, It was great..." And I remember the words, "I thought the keyboards were a little low" coming out of my mouth. Mike said, "Really?" I said, "Yeah, a bit."

As for the drums being "too loud," I remember Tommy Lee (yes, _that_ Tommy Lee) saying something to the effect of, "If I go to a concert, and that kick drum isn't pounding me in the chest, then it sucks." (Oooh, words of wisdom from the guy who lost Heather Locklear...duh...) Basically, keeping those drums pounding keeps people's attention, because you REALLY can feel those low overtones hitting you - which is what Tommy was trying to say, I think. I mean, listen to how loud Mike's kick is on most DT songs on the studio albums...loud? Yes. Problem? Not really. Depends on your taste.

I once asked Jim Gallagher (my mentor, and instructor at Temple University, as well as a phenomenal engineer) "Do you think the kick drum is too loud [on this mix I did]?" His reply was, "I don't know. It's a matter of taste." Period. So, I agree, but, realize that running sound live is a hell of a job. Try it sometime - get a friend with a band to let you run their sound. It ain't easy. As a personal aside (as if there wasn't enough already), I ran sound for a band that opened for my old band. I shaved some of the high-mids & highs off on the board/p.a. EQ because they were shredding my ear drums. Damn if 4 people didn't come over & say, "It sounds muddy." I went to the back of the bar, listened, and compensated. I went back to the board. Three of those people came up and said it still sounded muddy. And another person said it was too bright. It was at this point that I told everyone who came up to me that I didn't care what they thought, and to leave me alone. =)

Point being, it's a matter of opinion. I'd like to think I know what I'm doing. Granted, my ears are showing the signs of years of playing in bars, but, I know when something sounds good. And if you're being paid to do it, you tend to do what you know. The only people you really need to concern yourself with are your employers. If they're not happy, you have a problem.

And if you wanna know what the sound person is hearing, stand next to the soundboard. If the engineer has earplugs in (which you should really be using anyway - I'm not trying to be your nagging parent(s); your hearing is incredibly important and you should protect it), put them in. If you still think it sucks, then maybe you should take a look at the board. While it's not brain surgery, you don't get hired as a pro sound engineer if you don't know what you're doing. I wouldn't try getting his/her attention and telling her/him what you think of their mix. If they don't deck you, they'll have security do it. <grin>

Greetings guys 'n gals...More news 'n views from the UK...

It's a particularly sad moment for me coz it'll be my last post ever :(

I've got my degree 'n I'm out of here to earn some serious money. Who knows, I might be back with a vengeance by the end of the year with my very own non-college address. Stranger things have happened...

Way way thanx to all of you who have made my last two years on the jam such a good two years. You guys are the best.

For those expecting me to appear in LA sometime soon, my present girlfriend has put a stop to that, plus the money in Britain is much better ;) I'm gonna be out in California next year though, so I'll bear all the advice in mind. One day I WILL get to meet Jen, Brian and the Doc...oh yes, it will be mine...etc. etc.

Cheers all, and I'll see you on the next tour (what next tour ?!?!?!*&#$@%!!)

Can anyone tell me what other songs besides "The Mirror" that John Petrucci uses a seven string guitar on?

I need to know this for guitar lessons. Thanks.

I believe John P. recorded this song as an instructional tape to one of his students when he taught lessons. I believe it is a drum machine and phoney bass line. Then Kev's (?) roommate got a hold of it, did the whacky Beavis & Butthead commentary, and somehow one of us got a hold of it. Am I on track, everyone? Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as Petrucci's part, I don't think they were mocking Bon Jovi. Later. -Adam

I have heard that there are copies of the Fates Warning/Dream Theater show in Milan circulating around. Just wondering if anyone could help me out. Please, please e-mail me with info.

Hello all, Someone mentioned in Ytsejam 885 that they noticed the statue on the cover of Parallels was the same as on Perfect Symmetry. That is true. Did you also notice that the old man is the same. The old guy is also the same old man featured in Metallica's much overplayed video for Enter Sandman. He also has an almost unnoticable background appearance in the Fisher King (If it weren't for a phone call causing me to pause at the right time...)(I also wouldn't call it a "cameo" since the only people to whom he is famous are fans of metal). Where else has anyone seen this guy?

band other than DT. But, the real reason I wrote this is because his post about Metallica reminded me of the first time I heard PMU. The DJ said DT (I don't think he mentioned them by name) was Geddy Lee on vocals and bass, James Hetfield on guitar, Bill Bruford on drums, and the keyboardist from Yes (don't remember his name). I'm pretty sure it was just a joke, but it was pretty ridiculous either way...

Hey People! I'd just like to say, that to me, Dream Theater is not "Regular Metal" (as someone said earlier) at all! I have a very hard time to compare DT to Metallica or Pantera! Even though we got Thumping songs like "The Mirror", and some heavy riffing here and there, DT is much more intense and eleborate than, say, Faith No More (who have a keyboardist). To sum it up: DT's musicianship and sophistication make their "heaviness" much more heavy, than bands that can ONLY play "Mouth for War" stuff!

Just a little question: With my "Awake" CD came a little questionaire which I filled and sended to "Easewest Records". What do I get out of this? See ya everybody Aviad

Mike her is my idea for AD do as you suggest put Live's "Death of a Dictionary" on with it. I have never heard of this album and I love Live. And I think that if the Ronnie Scotts gig is 90 min. we should wait till we get the ACoS EP to see what the band officialy releases so as not to duplicate what thet do. And this way you could put all the rest of the RS stuff on a full cd. Because if you think about it if they only put 20 min. of the show on the EP that would leave 70 min. for a full RS CD. What does everyone else think?

personally, i was a huge metallica fan before i started litening to DT, and getting into prog...i would listen to megadeth, testament, anthrax, slayer, and other thrash...but now, DT has spoiled me in some ways... those bands don't interest me as much...they seem too simple...(atleast the last metallica, and megadeth albums)... > tim

these are part of a medley...along with queen, genesis, and others. why only include these three...personally i don't like the way they do the journey song...james screws it up a bit...

i would much rather have UK's in the dead of night instead of the medleys... it's a way better version than the original, imho. > > Metallica's "Damage, Inc" or give me death !!!

that must be on it as well!
