    Hello everyone!
Yesterday I got the new Skyclad album ("The Silent Whales Of Lunar Sea").
    It's pretty good heavy metal with violin.But I'm in trouble,'cause I didn't
know the names of the tracks. If anyone from you has it,please e-mail me or
    send it to the jam.
                    Thanks,

    'jammers,

To add my 2 cents to the Maiden discussion, I think DT would be best
doing one of the longer songs that have heavy and mellow parts combined
as they've done in many of their own songs.

I think To Tame a Land is cool because there are some neat key changes in
    that one. The beginning goes E E G E, E E G# F. There a semi-tone shift
in the key at times. For any interested it's off of Piece of Mind.

Can anyone comment on the newer F&J cd(1994)? I have Cuatro (1992) and
saw a new one when I bought it but wanted to try Cuatro first because I had
heard "Wading through the Darkness". I heard the older ones are more
    thrashy.

    Thanks

    Will K.

This is my first post, so I hope I'm doing this right and my message
    comes through!

Anyways, this is to Phil, who questioned whether Alex Lifeson was the
only member of the original Rush left. Contrary to the bio in
Chronicles, this is true! According to the Rush FAQ, "In August of 1968
the band's formal lineup was Alex on guitar, John Rutsey on drums, and
Jeff Jones on bass and vocals." It was at this time that the name Rush
was thought of. However, the bio is right in the way that Geddy Lee was
in the band when they recorded their first album. So, I guess it's
whatever way you want to look at it.

p.s. I'd like to carry on Phil's apologies for the lack of DT content.

I definitely can't. Sure they have some mellow songs, but on the
whole? Not even close. They have some unbelievably heavy stuff.
Though Jurassic Shift is a bit more mellow than some others, so that
    has colored your perceptions.

It would be more comparable to
    > Enigma than Yanni,

Oh gosh here we go again... Why Enigma? No "gregorian chants", no
techno, etc. Is it the Shakahuchi? Might as well say they remind you
of Peter Gabriel then! (No, they don't sound like PG at all!)

    > but still, neither really fits the Tentacles very well.

I'm glad to see this disclaimer at least.

    > I had heard them descrbied as "Ambient" music,

AAAAARRRRGGGHHH!!!! They have a few ambient-ish songs, but whoever
said that was out of their minds or not familiar with them. They are
definitely more heavy than not, ESPECIALLY live. Trust me; they blow
    you away in person.

     or some people called them
    > Spacey Music, but actually I think they're not all THAT weird.

Spacey != weird (necessarily). It's more like use of echo, burbling
synths/sound efects, long drawn-out guitar sound (refered to as
glissando guitar from Gong and Steve Hilage). It's more an attitude.

    > Actually now that I think about it, they're surprisingly accessable! It
    > sounds strange, but I guess it's in 4/4 a lot of the time (the drummer
    > though is top notch)

Though unfortunately, no longer with them. :-( They had a kick-ass
    rhythm section.

    > So, everyone should go get a CD by them... I've only seen two, Jurassic
    > Shift and Abhorience (or something like that.) Are there anymore?

    Oh, just a few. :-)

Basic discog. off the top of my head (all avail on CD):

    Erpsongs
    Tantric Obstacles
    Live Ethereal Cereal
    Sliding Gliding Worlds
    There Is Nothing
    Bits Between the Bits
    Pungent Effulgent
    Erpland
    Live Underslunky
    Afterswish
    Strangeitude
    Jurassic Shift
    Arbouressence

The first 6 were originally cassette-only, then released on a box set
on CD (which looks like a little cereal box!), now available
seperately. Sound quality ain't so great, but some great songs on
them are good and earlier versons of ones to appear later. I wouldn't
reccomend starting with them though. Afterswish is a compilation of
the first 6, with a couple of new songs thrown on. I think Jurassic
Shift and (especially) Arbouressence are slighlty less amazing than
the previous few, but they're still good. HIGHLY reccomended.

In Jam 879, some attributed my quotation about KLOS to someone else (NO flames).
For the LA Y'Jammers; KLOS was beginning menopause when I left and Pirate
Radio had recently gone off the air. Since I was in the
Redlands/Riverside/San Berdo area, I could listen to KCAL (they still on?)
Are there any good AOR stations left in the LA area? Haven't been down
    that way for awhile.

    Today's rock trivia questions:

Pink Floyd's album 'Wish You Were Here' contains the many parted 'Shine on
You Crazy Diamond.' To whom are they referring, and what is the relation
of that person to the band?

Now for the hard one: In Jam 876, someone referred to the early progmetal
band 'Hawkwind'. In another post, I mentioned the SciFi work of Niven &
Pournelle and its relation to Maiden's Crazy Eddie. What SciFi author
refers to Hawkwind in his writings?

In recent posts, I've seen references to 'Eve of Destruction' Is this
referring to a cover of the Barry McGuire song, or have I missed something?
In any case, McGuire lives about 1.5 miles from my current residence, and
is a friend of one of my brother-in-law's friends (a former DJ, who now
runs his own studio in the Phoenix area).

In Jam 880, someone asked about Orff's Carmina Burana, As I mentioned in
an earlier jam, CB is not an opera, it is a compilation, and rather drastic
revision of medieval Latin and Low German tavern and related folk songs
(I've heard some of the originals before). In some ways, it is a new
composition, based on the old text and music. As to similar compositions,
I know that Orff has done one or two other similar works, although I've
    never heard them.

What I like/listen to in classic music thread: Ravel, Debussy, Holst,
Mussorgsky (sp?, of which there are numerous, A Night on Bald(=Bare)
Mountain, another one of those translation thingys?), Rodrigo (HIGHLY
recommended if you like classical guitar; try 'Concierto de Aranjuez' first
if you haven't), Ginastera, Vaughn Williams, Prokofiev (sp?), Copland, some
Stravinsky and for our Nietzsche Y'Jammer, Richard Strauss ('Thus Spake
Zarathustra', eng. trans.). For those interested, ELP has borrowed musical
themes from many of these composers, although not always given in the album
credits, Other prog groups have borrowed other themes as well. Even Joe
Walsh (Ravel's Petite Suite, I believe). Prog music is really what got me
to listen to the classical originals, for which my parents are glad. If
you're interested in for more specific references, please Email me.

On 'Carpe Diem' (Sieze the day) for DT unplugged: howz about Carpe ...
Noctum (night); Hallucinatum (dream), Musicum (music) ..., etc. Just a
thought. And, YES, I'm aware of where the original idea came from. (I don't
know latin grammar, so these may not be exactly correct)

And for my beatiful blond cross-continent friend:

Shine on you crazy diamond... just wish you were here... :(

Well, Bill Bajzek is correct, Carmina Burana is *not* an opera.
However, it IS one piece of a triolgy!! The other two sections
never quite obtain the notoriety of CB, and are seldom performed.
But, if you're really into CB, you may start by checking into the
other two sections of Orff's trilogy.

BTW -- Kathleen Battle is doing Carmina Burana at Tanglewood this
    summer ... talk about "awesome"!!

I usually buy one new selection in each of the musical genres which

    Oh, YAK!!!

I somehow *knew* that most replies in this string would be in favor of
    James...

Well, lemme go on record that James is my most HATED member of DT!!!
I wish he'd quit, or get chucked out -- one of the two. I can't stand
his HM yelping and siren yowling ... enough ranting on my JL soapbox...

My favorite (current) member of DT? John Myung. Why? Cuz John is a
really killer ensemble player ... he really know when to lay out, and
when to show his chops. A great team player and an excellent musician
to boot. To all those who were ragging on him in that previous string...
    Pffht!

My fav _former_ member of DT? A toss-up between Charlie D. and Kevin Moore.
I really liked Kevin's playing and esp. his writing -- I think DTs music
will miss his terribly. Charlie is just my all-time fav DT singer ever.

    Hey,
         About Carmina Burana:

Pretty sweet, huh? The coolest thing to do with this opera is to read
some translations of the words. It's all sex and drinking (like Van
Halen?). The intro part doesn't really have anything to do with the rest
of it, though. If you've just gotten it, check out the instrumental
    movement with all the 2 2 2 2 3 rhythm. I think that's the coolest
movement outside of the first one.

And the lyrics were written by monks or something.

    Oh, for some DT content:
"The Mirror" is a sweet, sweet song. Agreed?

Okay, so, it's not directly Dream Theater content, but can anyone in the Bay
Area tell me about this prog metal event going on on the 16th? Jaime

more... All I know is that it's called the East Bay something-or-other (in
Hayward?), and it's on the 16th of this month.

    >BTW, StoneTrek was a syndicated show out of the Bay Area, I believe. Any Jammers up north (or anywhere in the US) still get this show? Just curious.<

Oh, wow...this makes me think about an idea I've been kicking around! Keith and I were talking about the lack of progressive music on the radio, and he brought up the fact that I have disc jockey experience of my own (yes, I am FCC licensed...I was very actively involved with student radio during my high school years). So, we were discussing what it would take to put together a syndicated show (and we actually have a friend who's done it to go get advice from!) I teased that 93 Rock would owe it to Sacramento to air such a show...and then try to spread it from there (in the meantime, you can pester 93 Rock electronically at 93Rock@calweb.com - address graciously provided by fellow 'jammer Jarrod. :) )

Well, it was nice to meet Eric and "Kylania." :) When I log onto my Netcom account, I've started checking to see who's on the channel...unfortunately, it's often times just that damn bot! :/

I agree. If a 'jammer's on and wants to talk DT, then they'll probably open a channel on their own accord...and I don't think any one person should have a monopoly over that.

Actually, I was just on earlier today, and the bot was gone! (Although I was bummed 'cause #Qryche had disappeared, and I thought there was an online conference today...it's been a lousy day...)

You mean Brandon Lee, right? Also, a point of clarification, it's Jason Scott Lee.

As far as fave DT member goes, it has to be John M. I am a saxophonist and guitarist, and while JP is great, Mr. Myung rocks my world. A truly inspiring musician.

Due to a wait for several important submissions that is turning out to be much longer than anticipated, I have decided to skip issue 9 altogether and make issue 10 a double issue. I apologize for the inconvenience, but I'm holding on some items that should make the wait worthwhile. In the meantime, just hold your shorts; Mail Day should be during the first week of August.

    Again, sorry for the inconvenience!

Hello all, I thought I would address a few things here. So here goes. One: Whomever posted that George Lynch looks younger is right (he looks like a young George Hamilton now) but I heard that part of the reason is not just that he had a haircut, but also because he had to have some reconstructive surgery after getting his face smashed in a fight. I can't remember exactly where my friend heard this. It may have been from GL himself at the NAMM show (I have a picture of Zach with GL, or is it GH). Can anyone else confirm this.

Two: My favourite member of DT is JP. Of course that's no surprise since I'm a guitar player. That's what I listen to most in a new band. I really don't care all that much about lyrical content unless it's so absurdly stupid that I can't help but sit up and notice (ala Green day)(sorry to y9ou GD fans, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong). I also dig MP quite a bit. I've met plenty of good guitarists that never made me play better when I jam w/them, but I aways have to play better when the drummer I jam with is great. Of course, I like all members of DT (and I'm giving DS the benefit of the doubt until I can hear his contribution first hand. I can't imagine DT hiring a gimp).

Three: I already e-mailed the guy about the classical music, but since there seems to be an interest. If you like Orff's CB then check out Mozart's Requiem in D minor (KV 626). It puts Orff to shame, I swear it! Also, for the other music featured in Excalibur check out Wagner's Gotterdammerung. The piece they play when Arthur dies is Siegfried's Funeral Music and the Final Scene (an excellent version of this is on Wagner Without Words with George Szell conducting the Cleveland Orchestra).

Four: Since someone else mentioned it, I will too. Always in the CD player: 1. Dream Theater - Awake 2. Fates Warning - Inside Out 3. James Horner - Braveheart score 4. Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of a Dying Sun 5. Testament - Low 6. Queensryche - Promised Land

Sorry about the length. Just feeling talkative tonight.

Hi again! It seems as if Perfect Strangers will be included on the Change of Seasons EP. A friend of mine found this in the Deep Purple newsgroup:

-------------------------------------------------------------------- Dream Theater is releasing an EP some time later this year. It is a collection of live covers, and also includes one new studio track. They do a live rendition of "Perfect Strangers", and I have to say it sounds mighty good (the singer isn't quite Ian Gillan, however). The band pretty much plays the song note for note. Other songs include Funeral For a Friend (Elton John), a Zeppelin medley, and a medley with a load of classic rock songs thrown in. The EP isn't really an EP because each song clocks in at about 25 minutes apiece (except for Perfect Strangers). I don't know when it is supposed to be released yet.

----------------------------------------------- Thanks to Patricia who made the long way from London to see DT live at Saarbruecken what is enough prove that she's a real DT fanatic, although not in the usual age for it. Perhaps we can welcome her soon on the ytsejam!

    Thanks,

    Tilman
